MiM - El pasado mes de septiembre la banda sacó The Earth Embraces Us All, su nuevo CD, el tercero de vuestra carrera. Estáis trabajando muy duro y sacando Cd’s cada año. ¿Por qué están haciendo las cosas de esta manera?
Chiara: Si, ¡hemos sacado otro disco! Básicamente teníamos muchas ideas nuevas así que decidimos escribirlas y de esta manera The Earth Embraces Us all nació… Por supuesto, tenemos que trabajar muy duro, pero pensamos que vale la pena, y podemos asegurar que estamos orgullosos del resultado.
MiM – Sin embargo, The Earth Embraces Us All es, de manera general, un CD más complejo. ¿les tomó más tiempo escribir y arreglar las canciones para este CD?
C: Básicamente, cada disco requiere un trabajo muy duro de cada uno de los miembros de la banda. Lo damos todo en nuestras canciones, y nada se agrega a una canción de manera aleatoria. El hecho de que sea más complejo con respecto a los anteriores discos es solo la consecuencia de la evolución que hemos tenido en la banda, tanto desde el punto de vista musical como el personal en estos tres años de actividad musical en que hemos estado juntos. También decidimos agregar nuevos instrumentos: el violín, gaitas y un saxo soprano.
MiM – A propósito, ¿cuánto tiempo estuvieron en el estudio? O sea, ¿entran al estudio con las canciones acabadas? ¿Cómo es el proceso de grabación?
C – Si, entramos al estudio con la música y las letras terminadas. No seríamos capaces de cuantificar todo el tiempo que pasamos en el estudio, pero habitualmente las partes instrumentales se hacen primero y las vocales se graban al final, junto a las partes instrumentales que tocan los artistas invitados.
MiM - Han trabajado de nuevo con Simone Mularoni, ¿Por qué?
C – Hemos trabajado de nuevo con Simone Mularoni porque estamos todos muy satisfechos con el trabajo que hizo en nuestros discos anteriores, por lo que fue un paso natural el pedirle que volviera a trabajar con nosotros.
MiM – hablando sobre la música del CD. Pienso que hay más coros. Más líneas corales en la música. Un ejemplo pudiera ser “Empty Lines”.
C – Si, hay muchos coros en el álbum, con muchas melodías cantadas al mismo tiempo. Nos gusto el efecto que este tipo de trabajo agrega, por lo que agregamos grandes coros en algunas partes donde queríamos obtener un cierto estado de ánimo para una cierta parte de alguna canción.
MiM - “Maschere” está cantada en italiano. ¿La vais a tocar en directo?
C – Esperamos que sí. Escribir letras en nuestro idioma natal fue una experiencia nueva y bastante retadora, porque habitualmente escribo las letras en inglés, pero todos en la banda estamos satisfechos con el resultado, y parece que la audiencia lo apreciará también.
MiM - “Advice From a Caterpillar” es una canción curiosa. La banda agrega algunas partes jazzeadas en el medio ¿Por qué? Estas partes me recuerdan el primer disco de Sting , The Dream of Blue Turtle, pero tal vez esta no fue vuestra idea, ¿me equivoco?
C – De hecho no estábamos pensando en Sting cuando estábamos trabajando en esta canción, pero de todos modos gracias por la comparación. “Advice from a caterpillar” es bastante rara tanto desde el punto de vista musical como de ambiente. Las letras están inspiradas en la novela “Alicia en el país de las maravillas” de Lewis Carrol, y la parte jazzeada representa muy bien la parte absurda de la historia que cuenta la novela.
MiM – La real “magnus opus” es “The Restless Ride”. ¿Están considerando tocarla en directo?
C - Ya la hemos tocado en directo (solo una parte y no la canción completa)… es una excelente canción para abrir nuestros conciertos.
MiM - The Earth Embraces Us All, es un gran paso en vuestras carreras, ¿están de acuerdo?
C - Bueno…¿quién sabe? Estamos seguros que es un gran paso adelante en la evolución de la banda, pero solo en tiempo dirá.
MiM - ¿Cuantas canciones de The Earth Embraces Us All van a tocar?
C – Nos atreveríamos a decirte que vamos a tocar todo el disco en directo, pero también tenemos bastante material de nuestros discos anteriores, así que hemos mezclado canciones de los tres discos en nuestros últimos conciertos.
MiM – Vimos la banda este año en España como teloneros de Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody. Regresan en noviembre como cabezas de cartel. Por favor, dinos los detalles.
C – Seguro, amamos al público español y no podemos esperar para regresar. Las fechas confirmadas son las siguientes:

MiM - Last September the band released The Earth Embraces Us All, a new CD. You are working really hard; relasing CD’s every year, wow. Why are you doing this that way?
C -Yes, we have released another album! Basically we had many ideas so we decided to write them down and so “The Earth Embraces Us all” was born… of course we had to work hard, but we think it was worth it…and we can say that we are proud of the result!
MiM - However, The Earth Embraces Us All is in general a more complex CD. Does it takes more time to write and arranged the songs for this CD?
C -Basically every album requires a very hard work for all the members of the band… we put all of ourselves in our songs, so nothing is randomly added to our tracks. The fact that it is more complex with respect to the other albums is just the consequence of the evolution we all have had in the band both on a personal and musical point of view in these three years of musical activity together. We also decided to add actual instruments: the violin, bagpipes and a soprano sax.
MiM - By the way, how much time did you have in the studio? So, do you enter the studio will all the songs finished? How is the recording process?
C -Yes, we enter the studio when all the songs and the lyrics are done. We wouldn’t be able to quantify how much time we passed in the studio, but usually the instrumental parts come first and the vocal parts are the last ones to be recorded, together with the instrumental parts played by the guest musicians.
MiM - You are again working with Simone Mularoni, why?
C -We have worked again with Simone Mularoni because we all were very much satisfied about the work he did on our previous albums, so it was quite natural for us to ask him to work again with us!
MiM - Speaking about the music on the CD. I consider that there is more choir. More choral lines in the music. An example could be “Empty Lines”.
C -Yes, there are many choirs on the album, with many melodies sung together at the same time…we like the effect this kind of work gives, so we add massive choirs whenever we want to obtain a certain mood for a certain part of a song.
MiM - “Maschere” is sung in Italian. Are you going to play it live?
C -Hopefully yes! It was a new and quite challenging experience to write lyrics in our native language, because I’m used to compose them in English… but we all in the band are satisfied about the result, and the audience seems to appreciate it as well!
MiM - “Advice From a Caterpillar” is a curious song. The band added some jazzy parts in the middle, why? These parts remember me the first Sting CD, The Dream of Blue Turtle, but maybe this wasn’t your idea, am I wrong?
C -We weren’t actually thinking about Sting while working on this track, but thanks for the comparison anyways! “Advice from a caterpillar” is kind of a weird song both moodwise and musicwise. The lyrics are inspired by the novel “Alice’s adventures in Wonderland” by Lewis Carrol, and the jazzy mood well represents the absurd story told in the novel.
MiM - The real “magnus opus” is “The Restless Ride”. Are you considering playing it alive?
C -We have already played it live many times (just a part and not the complete song)… it is an excellent opening song for our concerts!
MiM - The Earth Embraces Us All, is a big step in your musical career. Do you agree?
C -Well…who knows? For sure is a big step forward in the evolution of the band… then, only time will tell!
MiM - How many songs of The Earth Embraces Us All are you going to play?
C -We’d dare to say that we’d like to play the whole album live… but we also have quite a lot of material from our previous albums, so we have mixed songs taken from all our three albums in the last concerts.
MiM - We saw the band this year in Spain as a supporter for Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody. You’ll coming back in November as a headliner. Please, tell us the details.
C -Sure! We love the Spanish audience, so we can’t wait to be back!
