Roy Khan, el legendario vocalista de voz y timbre privilegiado, (Conception, Kamelot, Avantasia) decide respondernos unas preguntas sobre el nuevo disco de Conception. 'State of Deception' es una maravilla y aquí nos da detalles tanto de la música como de su concepto de la vida. Gracias a Sonja Schlicht de CMM.
MiM - Hola mi amigo. Hemos estado siguiendo a la banda desde "Parallel Minds" y estoy muy contento con "State of Deception". ¿Cuáles crees que son las diferencias entre tu primer CD y "State of deception"?
Roy: Hola amigo! Tenemos una expresión más madura hoy. 20 años hacen una diferencia bastante fuerte. La producción también es de primera categoría. Tore hizo un gran trabajo con cada pista de audio y Stefan Glaumann (Rammstein / Within Temptation) agregó magia en la mezcla. También puedo decir que el elemento orquestal es nuevo, pero creo que también habríamos utilizado estos sonidos en los años 90 si la tecnología hubiera estado disponible en ese momento. Tore y yo tenemos una base de música clásica. Tore mucho más que yo, y realmente ha desarrollado habilidades cuando se trata de arreglos orquestales. Realmente lo escuchas en canciones como «Anybody Out There» y «My Dark Symphony».
MiM - ¿Creo que tal vez "Re-Conception" fue grabado para probar la opinión pública sobre un próximo CD o hubo alguna otra razón para entregar solo tres canciones en ese momento?
Roy: Es un procedimiento comercial común tener teasers frente a un lanzamiento más grande. En este caso, como parte de la campaña general queríamos despertar las expectativas con estas pistas en un solo single un mes antes del EP «My Dark Symphony». Por suerte a la gente le gustó :))
MiM - Cuando te escucho cantar, siento que había magia en la formación original (la formación que grabó el primer CD). Sabemos porqué esa formación (Arve, Ingar, Roy y Tore) finalmente se disolvió, pero ¿por qué tardó más de 20 años en comenzar de nuevo?
Roy: Bueno ... en los primeros diez años todavía estaba en Kamelot, Tore también estaba ocupado con ARK y vivió en el extranjero durante algún tiempo. Después de dejar la escena en 2011, no quería hacer nada, ni siquiera remotamente relacionado con hacer música a ese nivel. Solo quería tener un trabajo regular y vivir una vida regular. Sin embargo, a lo largo de los años sentí la necesidad de hacer algo. En 2016 Tore tocó un par de canciones para mí y sentimos que tenían el tipo de magia que nos gusta tener en nuestras canciones. Y aquí estamos.
MiM - Todo el mundo sabe que tú y Tore son muy buenos amigos. ¿Por qué no decidiste continuar Conception con otros miembros en lugar de romper la banda?
Roy: En mi opinión personal Conception siempre hemos sido nosotros cuatro. Y no nos separamos, realmente solo pusimos la banda "en hielo" por un tiempo. Mientras tanto, me uní a Kamelot y las cosas comenzaron a suceder cada vez más rápido.
MiM: Hablemos del nuevo CD. ¿Por qué se seleccionó "Waywardly Broken" como single?
Roy: Sentimos que «Waywardly Broken» sería una canción representativa para empezar. También encarna un ambiente positivo inicial a pesar de la melancolía y el drama. Un hecho divertido: las "raíces" de esta canción se remontan a principios de la década de 2000, cuando Tore y yo improvisamos el marco básico para el verso y el coro.
MiM - Otra canción interesante es "No Rewind". Creo que el grupo también ha avanzado, introduciendo arreglos que serían impensables en 1997 y simplemente locos en 1993. ¿Cómo se escribió esa canción?
Roy: Esta canción comenzó con Tore aportando las banses inciales. El riff de guitarra en el verso es brillante ... ¡Me encanta! Luego lo desglosamos, cortamos, pegamos y editamos. Agregué una progresión de acordes bastante inusual en las teclas que conducen a una melodía inquietante. Las letras están inspiradas directamente en el discurso de Greta Thunberg ante la ONU el año pasado por cierto.
MiM - Para cantar "She Dragoon", pensé que la banda eligiría a la vocalista de Amaranthe, Elize Ryd. En esta canción, a veces pienso que ella es el dragón. Quien haya sido, creo que eres tú quien tuvo las palabras del dragón o eres simplemente un narrador de parte de la historia. ¿Cómo se concibió esta canción?
Roy: No es Elize, sino la hija de Arve, Aurora, que canta «She Dragoon». Ella también está haciendo un gran trabajo. Esta canción comenzó con Tore y Arve improvisando en el sótano de este último. Por lo tanto, el título de la obra para este fue «Sótano de Arve». Tore hizo un movimiento inteligente cuando tomó el verso de una canción desechada y lo convirtió en el primer verso de «She Dragoon». Canté en la demo y tenía ciertas palabras y frases que eran difíciles de intercambiar con cualquier otra cosa. Por lo tanto, tuve que hacer que todo lo demás se ajustara a las pocas líneas que consideraba esenciales y de alguna manera tenían sentido. Les puedo decir que hubo mucho trabajo duro, pero es un proceso divertido y un resultado final genial.
MiM - Me alegra ver a la banda con vida nuevamente, pero, ¿no es este el peor momento en el negocio de la música para reiniciar una banda?
Roy: Ya veremos. Aunque entiendo lo que estás diciendo. De manera óptima deberíamos haber estado de gira ahora mismo, pero en una nota positiva, la gente ahora tendrá tiempo de sobra para entrar en 'State of Deception' antes de que finalmente volvamos a la carretera.
MiM - Justo cuando la banda estaba lista para la acción, el COVID-19 interrumpió todas las actividades. ¿Tienes un plan para un futuro cercano?
Roy: Dudo que sucedan muchas cosas en este verano, pero estamos tomando ciertas precauciones y generalmente seguimos los consejos y regulaciones gubernamentales. Mientras tanto, tratamos de mantener el negocio como de costumbre con lo que podemos hacer desde casa.
MiM - ¿Hay algo que le gustaría decir a sus fanáticos españoles?

MiM - Hello my friend. I have been following the band since “Parallel Minds” and I’m really happy with “State of Deception”. What do you think are the differences between your first and your recent CD’s?
Roy: Hola amigo! We have a more mature expression today. 20 some years make the difference quite hearable. The production is also top-notch. Tore did a great job tracking a lot of this, and Stefan Glaumann (Rammstein/Within Temptation) added magic in the mix. You may also say that the orchestral element is new, but I believe we would have used these sounds in the 90s too if the technology had been available back then. Tore and myself both have a partial background dealing with classical music. Tore more so than me - and he has really developed his skills when it comes to orchestral arrangements. You really hear it on songs like «Anybody Out There» and «My Dark Symphony» not the least.
MiM - I think that maybe “Re-Conception” was recorded to taste the public opinion about a next CD or there was another reason to deliver only three songs in that moment?
Roy: It is a common business procedure to have teasers in front of a bigger release. In this case, as part of the overall campaign we wanted to stir the expectations with these tracks on a separate single one month before we let go of the EP «My Dark Symphony». Luckily people liked it :))
MiM - When I listen to you singing, I feel that there was magic in the original line-up (the line-up that recorded the first CD). We know why that line-up (Arve, Ingar, Roy y Tore) finally disbanded but, why it took more than 20 years to start again?
Roy: Well…The first ten years here I was still in Kamelot and Tore was also busy with ARK and lived abroad for some time. After I left the scene in 2011 I did not want to do anything even remotely connected to doing music at that level. I just wanted to have a regular job and live a regular life. Over the years I felt the urge to do something though. In 2016 Tore played a couple of tracks for me and we felt they had the type of magic we like to have in our songs. And here we are.
MiM - Everybody knows that you and Tore are very close friends. Why didn´t you decide to continue Conception with other members instead of breaking the band?
Roy: To speak for myself; Conception has always been the four of us. And we didn’t break up - we really just put the band on ice for a while. In the meantime, I joined Kamelot and things started happening quicker and quicker.
MiM - Let’s talk about the new CD. Why was “Waywardly Broken” selected as a single?
Roy: We felt that «Waywardly Broken» would be a representative song for starters. It also embodies an initial positive vibe spite the melancholy and drama. Fun fact; the «roots» of this song goes all the way back to the early 2000s when Tore and I jammed out the basic framework for verse and chorus.
MiM - Another interesting song is “No Rewind”. I think the group has also advanced, introducing arrangements that would be unthinkable in 1997 and simply crazy in 1993. How that song was written?
Roy: This song started with Tore having the initial framework. The guitar riff in the verse is brilliant…I love it! Then we broke it down, cut, pasted, and edited. I added a rather unusual chord progression on keys that lead to a haunting melody to go with it. Lyrics are directly inspired by Greta Thunberg’s UN speech last year btw.
MiM - To sing "She Dragoon" I thought the band chose Amaranthe’s vocalist Elize Ryd? In this song, sometimes I think that she is the dragoon. Whoever, I think that it is you who had the words of the dragoon or he is simply a narrator of part of the story. How this song was conceived?
Roy: It is not Elize, but Arve’s daughter Aurora who sings on «She Dragoon». She’s doing a great job too. This song started with Tore and Arve jamming in the latter’s basement. Thus the working title for this one was «Arve’s Basement». Tore did a clever move when he took the verse from a scrapped song and made it the first verse of «She Dragoon» instead. I sang on the demo and had certain words and phrases there that were hard to exchange with anything else. Thus I had to make everything else fit the few lines that I thought were essential and somehow made sense. A lot of hard work I can tell you, but a fun process and cool end result.
MiM - I’m glad to see the band alive again but, isn’t this the worst moment in the music business to restart a band?
Roy: We’ll see. I understand what you are saying though. Optimally we should have been out there touring right now, but on a positive note people now will have plenty of time to get into «State of Deception» before we eventually hit the road again.
MiM - Just when the band was ready for action, the COVID-19 interrupted all the activities. Do you have a plan for a near future?
Roy: I doubt there will be much happening on this side of summer, but we are taking certain precautions and generally follow governmental advice and regulations. Meanwhile, we try to maintain business as usual with what we can do from home.
MiM - Is there something you would like to tell your Spanish fans?
