Leather Leone fue conocida en la década de los ochenta cuando entró en la banda del guitarrista David T Chastain, aunque anteriormente había debutado sobre las tablas con Rude Girl. En esta escueta entrevista hablamos de su historia y de la salida de su nuevo disco aún en fase de producción.

MiM - Hola Leather. Soy Tony González de Made in Metal. Es muy agradable hablar contigo. Soy Tony González y antes de vivir en España vivía en La Habana, Cuba donde nací. Fue ahí cuando escuché todos los discos de Chastain que grabaste en los ochenta cuando no existía Internet. ¿Sabías que allá en Cuba la banda tiene fans, tu voz y algunos guitarreros estudiaron el estilo de Chastain?

LL - He sido consciente del aprecio de Cuba por la música de Chastain. Estoy eternamente agradecida.

MiM - Pero antes de Chastain estuviste en una banda llamada Rude Girl. ¿Cómo puedes definir a esa banda hoy en día?

LL - La música de Rude Girl era como sugiere el nombre... Metal muy grosero, adelantado, ruidoso y crudo. Desafortunadamente, la música no existe en ninguna plataforma para que ninguno de ustedes la escuche.

MiM - Fue Mike Varney quien te presentó a David T. Chastain (o él a ti) ¿cuál fue tu primera impresión sobre David, tomando en cuenta que estarían en una banda, meses juntos, de gira por USA y otros países?

LL- Sí. Fue Mike Varney de Shrapnel Records quien nos presentó. Nos hicimos amigos cuando me mudé a California. Me impresionó el estilo de escritura diferente de Chastain. Hicimos clic inmediatamente. Recuerdo que sucedió muy rápido. Envié un demo, y estaba grabando tres meses después.

MiM - Desde el primer CD de Chastain, nos impresionó tu voz. ¿Utilizaste un micrófono especial para cantar, una marca o modelo que siempre llevas contigo cuando vas a cantar o grabar o simplemente eres pulmón y técnico?

LL - Siempre he preferido los micrófonos Shure... pero trabajo constantemente para mantener mi voz saludable. 

MiM - Hablando de técnica vocal. ¿Sigues una rutina antes de un show, como no hablar con nadie o te es imposible quedarte callada?

LL - Cuando estoy de gira, ¡sí, me mantengo callada! Trato de dormir y beber cantidades extremas de agua.

MiM - De los ochenta y hasta en la última foto vemos que eres músculo y fibra. Aparte de los ejercicios vocales, ¿practicas algún deporte?

LL - Nuevamente, me mantengo en forma corriendo, yendo al gimnasio. También soy muy hiperactiva, así que eso ayuda. jajaja

MiM - Volviendo a los tiempos de Chastain. La banda fue absolutamente buena, sin embargo, la música no se vendió muy bien. ¿Por qué crees que sucedió esto? ¿Quedaste satisfecho incluso cuando la banda no alcanzó los primeros lugares en las listas?

LL - Siempre es difícil mirar hacia atrás y determinar por qué algunas bandas rompen y otras no. Sé que Chastain y yo teníamos ideas diferentes sobre cómo seguir adelante... pero no tengo tiempo para especular, sigo adelante.

MiM - A veces recuerdo los extraordinarios Lp's que grabaste con Chastain. ¿Hay alguna posibilidad de grabar otro CD bajo el nombre de Chastain?

LL - No estoy seguro si volveremos a grabar. Con nosotros, nunca se sabe... parece que tenemos ideas cada diez años.

MiM - Fue increíble que estuvieras veinte años retirada de la escena musical. ¿Qué sucedió realmente? ¿Por qué decidiste volver?

LL - ¡Chastain y yo solo necesitábamos un descanso, supongo! Había planeado tomarme unos meses de descanso y volver al trabajo. Los poderes fácticos simplemente no permitieron que sucediera. Entonces, en lugar de comprometerme, me alejé. El motivo de mi regreso fue el fallecimiento de Ronnie James Dio. Me di cuenta de que me habían dado un regalo de los dioses y estaba estúpidamente perdiendo el tiempo. Era hora de usar todo lo que me había enseñado. Lo hice por él.

MiM - Declaras que no hay planes para una nueva grabación de Sledge / Leather pero, si hubiera una oportunidad de nuevo, ¿la tomarías? 

LL – Sledge / Leather es un proyecto del pasado solamente.

MiM - El nuevo CD "We Are the Chosen" se estaba grabando en Polonia y tú lo produces. Cómo es trabajar en San Francisco con un estudio polaco. La diferencia de horarios debe estar matando. ¿Hay una fecha límite para este lanzamiento?

LL - Lo grabé en Polonia, en el estudio Hertz. Grabé mi voz allí para Leather II. Mi plan siempre fue volver. Aún no hay fecha de lanzamiento. Estén atentos en www.leatherleone.com

MiM - ¿Quiénes son los músicos que tocan contigo en tu banda ahora mismo?

LL - La banda de grabación son Vinnie Tex, Douglas Pinella y Braulio Drummond. Hicieron el disco conmigo. Todavía no estoy seguro de mi banda de gira en este momento.

MiM - Finalmente, ¿se hizo la gira italiana o no? ¿Planes para visitar España?

LL -  El Covid mató todos mis planes de gira por Italia. Los mantendré informados sobre los planes para este año.

 The reason for my return was the passing of Ronnie James Dio.

Leather Leone was known in the eighties when she gets into the band of the guitar player David T Chastain. She was acting previously with Rude Girl. In this short interview, she speaks about her history and her new CD even in production.

MiM - Hello Leather. It’s Tony González from Made in Metal. It’s really nice talking to you. I’m Tony González and before living in Spain I was living in Havana, Cuba where I was born. It was there when I listen to all the Chastain albums that you recorded in the eighties when the Internet didn´t exist. Did you know that there in Cuba the band has fans, your voice, and some guitars players studied the Chastain guitar?

LL - I have been aware of Cuba´s appreciation of Chastain music. I am forever grateful.

MiM - But before Chastain, you were in a band called Rude Girl. How can you define that band nowadays?

LL - Rude Girl’s music was as the name suggests...Very rude upfront, loud, raw Metal. Unfortunately, the music does not exist on any platform for any of you to hear.

MiM - It was Mike Varney who introduces you to David T. Chastain (or him to you) how was your first impression about David?, taking into account you would be in a band, months together, touring the USA and other countries.

LL - Yes. It was Mike Varney from Shrapnel records that introduced us. We had become friends when I moved to California. I was impressed with Chastain's different writing styles.  We clicked immediately. I do recall it happening very quickly. I sent a demo and was recorded three months later.

MiM - From the first Chastain CD, we were impressed by your voice. Did you use a special microphone to sing, a brand or model that you always keep with you when you are going to sing or record, or are you simply lungs and technic?

LL - I have always preferred Shure microphones... but I am constantly working on keeping my voice healthy.

MiM - Speaking about vocal technique. Did you follow a routine before a show, like don´t speak to anybody or it’s impossible for you to keep quiet?

LL - When I am touring, yes, I keep myself quiet!  Try to sleep and drink extreme amounts of water.

MiM - From the eighties and even in the last picture we see that you are muscle and fiber. Apart from the vocal exercises, do you play any sports?

LL - Again, I keep myself in shape by running, going to the gym. I am also very hyperactive so that helps. lol

MiM - Going back to Chastain times. The band was absolutely good, however, the music didn´t sell really well. Why do think this happen? Were you satisfied even when the band didn´t hit first place in the charts?

LL - It's always difficult to look back and actually determine why some bands break and others don't. I know that Chastain and I had different ideas on how to move forward... but I don't have time to speculate. I move forward.

MiM - Sometimes I remember the extraordinary LPs you recorded with Chastain. Is there any possibility to record another CD under the moniker Chastain?

LL - I'm not sure if we will record again.  With us, you never know... we seem to get ideas every ten years.

MiM - It was amazing that you were twenty years retired from the musical scene. What does really happens? Why did you decide to come back?

LL - Chastain and I just needed a break, I guess!   I had planned to take a few months off and get back in the game. The powers that be just didn't allow it to happen. So, instead of compromise, I walked away. The reason for my return was the passing of Ronnie James Dio. I realized I had been given a gift from the gods and was stupidly doing nothing with it. It was time to use all he had taught me. I did it for him.

MiM - You declare that there aren´t plans for a new Sledge / Leather recording but, if there is an opportunity again, will you take it? (Maybe you are not interested)

LL – Sledge / Leather is a project from the past only.

MiM - The new CD “We Are the Chosen” was recorded in Poland and you produce it. How it’s working in San Francisco with a polish studio. The difference of horaries must be killing. Is there a deadline for this release?

LL - I recorded it in Poland, at Hertz studio.  I had recorded my vocals there for Leather II. My plan was always to return. There is no release date yet.  Stay tuned at www.leatherleone.com
