Thundermother es una banda de Hard Rock fundada por Filippa Nässil en 2009. Después de muchos cambios en la formación, en 2012 el grupo consigue mantener una estabilidad haciendo de la banda uno de las más importante en el panorama internacional. Así que Made in Metal conversa con su líder, fundadora y guitarrista Filippa Nassil para conocer sobre la historia de banda y la gira en la cual están inmersos ahora.

MiM: ¡Hola! Mi nombre es Raúl Cardona y es un gran placer hablar con Filippa Nassil, ¿cómo estás?

TM: Estoy bien, pero agotada después de quince días en el estudio. Ayer tuvimos una fiesta de escucha y fue el último día de grabación. Estamos trabajando en el nuevo álbum.

MiM: ¿Cómo fueron tus inicios en el mundo de la música?

TM: Mi hermano dijo que tocaba el piano y mi familia le encantaba la música y tocar. Yo estuve tocando muchos instrumentos diferentes antes de elegir la guitarra. Me enamoré del instrumento y lo toco desde entonces.

MiM: Sois una banda con varios años en la escena del metal. ¿Cómo fueron esos inicios? ¿Cómo lograron insertarse en el complicado mundo de la industria musical?

TM: Si hablas de Thundermother, eso solo vino del amor por la música. Me encanta el rock old school retro classic y quería tocar eso en mi propia banda. Si realmente crees en algo, es fácil.

MiM: ¿Cuál es el secreto para mantenerse con vida en el complicado mundo de la industria musical?

TM: Bueno, mantienes tu sonido y haces lo que te gusta, pero también puedes romper algunas reglas en el rock and roll. Estamos abiertos a recorrer muchos caminos en la música. Cuando empezó Ac/Dc se vestían de mujer. Nunca tengas miedo al cambio, pero mantén el núcleo.

MiM: Comenzaremos haciendo un poco de historia y mirando hacia atrás. Cuéntanos sobre el álbum debut de la banda titulado “Rock 'n Roll Disaster” (Warner Music Group, 2014), que este año celebra su octavo aniversario. ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de aquellos tiempos? ¿Qué canciones de este álbum no puedes dejar de tocar en vivo?

TM: Recuerdo todo y se siente como si fueran más de ocho años jaja. Gracias por decirme eso.. bueno

Recuerdo que mis amigos tomaron las fotos y grabamos el disco en el estudio de un amigo. Trabajamos con muy poco dinero y presupuesto e intentamos hacerlo nosotros mismos. Luego vino Warner y me sorprendió que nos firmaran.

MiM: Me imagino que el 2017 fue un año difícil para ti. En ese año todos los integrantes de la banda decidieron irse. ¿Cómo recuerdas ese momento?¿Cómo es tu relación actual con los ex integrantes de la banda?

TM: Solo miro hacia el futuro y ya no tenemos ningún contacto. Fue doloroso, sí, pero si no quieres tocar en Thundermother, lo respeto y busco a alguien que quiera. Fue fácil. Girar y trabajar para una banda no es para todos y te tiene que encantar. No amaban a Thundermother como yo, supongo. No sé, porque nunca más me han dirigido la palabra después de eso.

MiM: El Hard Rock parece estar pasando por una muy buena etapa en cuanto a calidad y cantidad de bandas y lanzamientos. ¿Qué crees que es esto? ¿Y qué bandas estás escuchando últimamente?

TM: La música rock es más grande que la música pop otra vez. Al menos en Suecia. La gente ya no entiende lo que hay en la radio. Creo que pronto tendremos un repunte. De hecho, escucho algunas cosas geniales... echa un vistazo a Dirty Honey, Heavy Feather y Rooster. Eso es lo que estoy escuchando ahora mismo.

MiM: ¿Cuéntame sobre la idea de lanzar la edición de lujo del álbum “Heat Wave”? Guernica Mancini habló con nosotros el año pasado y nos comentó algo. 

TM: Teníamos más material, así que volvimos al estudio e hicimos un CD extra y lo añadimos a “Heat Wave”. Tres temas acústicos que siempre quisimos hacer por ejemplo. 

MiM: Me encanta el diseño de la portada de este álbum. ¿Quién estaba a cargo? Se nota que en la habitación de la chica de la portada hay varios carteles de bandas como Kiss y un cartel de Van Halen. ¿Esta era una forma de rendir homenaje a estas dos bandas? ¿Estás influenciado por estas dos grandes bandas?

TM: Nuestro equipo hizo la sesión junto con Franz Schepers, este fotógrafo alemán increíblemente talentoso. hay una combinación de lo que amamos en Thundermother en las paredes de esa foto.

MiM: El disco “Heat Wave” (AFM Records, 2020) salió justo cuando la pandemia paralizaba todo. ¿Qué estrategia de promoción llevaron a cabo para apoyar el lanzamiento del álbum?

TM: Decidimos seguir como la única banda de gira en Europa durante la pandemia. Cruzamos océanos (no literalmente) para tocar para la gente. Tocamos para 50 personas donde se nos permitió pero lo hicimos dos veces en un día. Fue un trabajo duro pero divertido. Nunca tuvimos un descanso, jaja.

MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso de grabación y producción del nuevo disco? ¿Quién fue su productor? ¿Cuándo podrán los fans escuchar nuevo material de la banda?

TM: Ahora nos estamos enfocando en un nuevo álbum nuevamente, con el mismo productor Søren Andersen de Dinamarca. Toca la guitarra con Glen Hughes, es grande en la escena del rock y entiende lo que queremos hacer. Acabamos de terminar quince días de grabación en Baggpipe Studios en Estocolmo y ahora estamos haciendo nuevos videos musicales y nuevos lanzamientos de sencillos. ¡Super excitante! ¡El CD se lanzará este año 2022! ¡Comenzando muy, muy pronto! ¡Justo ahora está nuestro primer video! 

MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo de componer música, es un proceso colectivo, o solo uno o quizás dos son los que componen en la banda?

TM: Escribimos juntos principalmente para estos álbumes y, a veces, junto con Søren, por ejemplo. ¡A veces también escribimos algo nosotras mismos!

MiM: Siendo una banda relativamente nueva, vuestra música está saliendo a la altura de las plataformas de streaming, que están más orientados a promocionar singles que álbumes. ¿Cómo lo ves?

TM: Así es ahora. Siempre hacemos un álbum. Se siente más como rock para nosotros. ¡Pero estamos abiertos a hacer EP, supongo! La industria de la música siempre está cambiando...

MiM: ¿Proyecto de gira o conciertos este año?

TM: Muchos, cientos probablemente. ¡Consulta nuestra página de inicio para comprar entradas cerca de tu ciudad!

Thundermother is a Hard Rock band founded by Filippa Nässil in 2009. After many changes in the line-up, in 2012 the group manages to maintain stability making the band one of the most important on the international scene. So Made in Metal talks with its leader, founder, and guitarist Filippa Nassil to learn about the history of the band and the tour they are currently immersed in.

MiM: Hello! My name is Raúl Cardona and it is a great pleasure to talk with Filippa Nassil, How are you?

TM:  I am fine but exhausted after fifteen days in the studio. We had a listening party yesterday and it was the last day of recording. We are working on the new album.

MiM: How were your beginnings in the world of music?

TM: My brother said played piano and my family loved music and playing. I was playing a lot of different instruments before I chose the guitar. I fell in love with the instrument and have been playing that ever since.

MiM: You are a band with several years in the metal scene. How were those beginnings? How were they able to insert themselves in the complicated world of the music industry?

TM: If you talk about Thundermother, that just came from the love of the music. I love old-school retro classic rock music and I wanted to play that in my own band. If you really believe in something, it is easy.

MiM: What is the secret to stay alive in the complicated world of the music industry?

TM: Well you keep your sound and do what you like but you can also break some rules in rock n roll. We are open to go many ways in the music. When Ac/Dc started they dressed out like women. Never be afraid of change but keep the core.

MiM: We'll start by doing a bit of history and looking back. Tell us about the band's debut album entitled “Rock 'n Roll Disaster” (Warner Music Group, 2014), which this year will be celebrating its eighth anniversary. What memories do you have of those times? What songs from this album can't you stop playing live?

TM: I remember everything and it feels longer than eight years haha. Thank you for telling me that.. well

I remember my friends took the photos and we recorded the album in a friend’s studio. We worked with very little money and budget and tried to do it ourselves. Warner then came and I was shocked they signed us.

MiM: I imagine that 2017 was a challenging year for you. That year all the members of the band decided to leave. How do you remember that moment? What was it that happened so that the musicians of the band decided to go? What is your current relationship with the former members of the band?

TM: I only look to the future and we don’t have any contact anymore. It was painful, yes, but if you don’t want to play in Thundermother I respect that and look for someone who wants to. It was easy. Touring and working for a band isn’t for everyone and you gotta love it. They didn’t love Thundermother as I did I suppose. I don’t know because they never talked to me again after that.

MiM: Hard Rock seems to be going through a very good stage in terms of quality and quantity of bands and releases. What do you think this is? And what bands are you listening to lately?

TM: Rock music is bigger than pop music again. At least in Sweden. People don’t understand what’s on the radio anymore. I believe we will have an upswing soon. I listen to some cool stuff actually.. check out Dirty Honey, Heavy Feather and Rooster. That’s what I’m listening to right now.

MiM: Tell me about the idea of releasing the deluxe edition of “Heat Wave” album?Guernica Mancini talked to us last year and told us something. 

TM: We had more material so we went back to the studio and did a bonus CD and added that to Heatwave. Three acoustic tracks that we always wanted to do for example.

MiM: I love the cover design of this album. Who was in charge? It is noted that in the room of the girl on the cover there are several posters of bands like Kiss and a Van Halen poster. This was a way to pay homage to these two bands? Are you influenced by these two great bands?

TM: Our team did the shoot together with Franz Schepers this amazingly talented German photographer. It was a combination of what we in Thundermother love on the walls in that pic.

MiM: The “Heat Wave” album (AFM Records, 2020) came out just when the pandemic paralyzed everything. What promotion strategy did you carry out to support the release of the album?

TM: We decided to keep on going as the only touring band in Europe during the pandemic. We crossed oceans (not literally) to play for people. We played for 50 people where we were allowed but we did it twice a day instead. It was hard work but fun. We never had a break, haha.

MiM: How is the process of recording and producing the album? Who was its producer? When the fans be able to hear new material from the band?

TM: We are focusing on a new album again now, with the same producer Søren Andersen from Denmark. He plays guitar with Glen Huges and he is big in the rock scene and understands what we want to do. We just finished fifteen days of recording in Baggpipe Studios in Stockholm and we are in the making now of new music videos and new single releases. Super excited!! The CD will be released this year 2022! Starting very, very soon! Just right now our first video! 

MiM: How is the creative process of composing music, is it a collective process, or only one or maybe two are the ones who compose in the band?

TM: We write together mostly for these albums and sometimes together with Søren for example. Sometimes we write something by ourselves too!

MiM: Being a relatively new band, your music is coming out at the height of streaming platforms, that are more oriented towards promoting singles than albums. How do you see it?

TM: That’s how it is now. We always do an album too. It feels more like a rock to us. But we are open to do like EPs I guess! The music industry is always changing…

MiM: Tour project or concerts this year?

TM: Many, hundreds probably. Check our homepage for tickets close to you!

MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers?

TM: Without you we are nothing. We love you guys and thank you for supporting rock and metal!
