"Nos apoyamos en los grupos progresivos y experimentales más interesantes"

Pressure Points es una banda finlandesa de Metal Progresivo que el pasado 25 de febrero lanzó el sencillo "The Night Inside", perteneciente al álbum que verá la luz en 2023 a través de Art Gates Records.

MiM: ¡Hola chicos! ¿Cómo estás?

PP: Hola. Es Vili Auvinen (baterista, letrista) de Pressure Points haciendo esta entrevista. Estoy bien. Se acerca el verano aquí en Finlandia y la vida es buena.

MiM: Pressure Points se fundó hace 16 años. Me gustaría que comentaras sobre los inicios de la banda. 

PP: Comenzó como un proyecto de verano entre Kari Olli (guitarra solista, gruñidos) y yo. Nos conocimos en una playa de nuestra ciudad natal y rápidamente nos dimos cuenta de que compartíamos el mismo gusto musical. Nos apoyamos mucho en los grupos progresistas y experimentales que nos parecieron más interesantes. Empezamos a improvisar mucho y pronto nos dimos cuenta de que teníamos mucho material listo para grabar. Así fue como hicimos nuestra primera demostración y comenzamos el largo viaje como banda.

La banda ha estado viva durante un tiempo respetable, aunque ha habido altibajos. Ahora, en 2022, tenemos un impulso muy fuerte y esperamos con ansias el próximo año con el lanzamiento de nuestro tercer álbum.

MiM: Al escuchar el sencillo "The Night Inside" me doy cuenta del excelente trabajo musical realizado por ustedes. Una mezcla entre Death/Progressive Black. Hábleme de esta nueva producción.

PP: Las primeras versiones de “The Night Inside” ya existían en 2017. La canción pasó por una fuerte evolución. Fue renovado muchas veces. Los bocetos de otras canciones para el álbum se formaron entre 2017 y 2019. Los temas de las letras todavía están un poco abiertos para comentar. Los temas musicales varían desde el death metal más pesado hasta los pasajes más suaves; lo que escuchas es algo así como si Gojira se pusiera en la licuadora con Toto.

La mayoría de los bocetos de canciones que vienen en el álbum están hechos por Veli-Matti Kyllönen (teclados, voz, letrista) y Saku (guitarra, ya no está en la banda). Todos participamos en los arreglos, que suelen llevar mucho tiempo con canciones tan largas como las nuestras.

La batería se grabó en un estudio. Todos los demás instrumentos y voces se hicieron en nuestras casas o en lugares de ensayo en Finlandia. El nombre del álbum aún no se ha decidido.

MiM: Me llama la atención los diferentes registros vocales que se escuchan. ¿Todas las voces son interpretadas por Juha Tretjakov? ¿Su formación como vocalista es empírica o académica?

PP: Todas las voces limpias y los gruñidos agudos de “The Night Inside” son cantados por Juha, los temas son de Juha, Mika (ex-miembro) Oinonen y Veli-Matti. Los gruñidos bajos fueron hechos por un gruñidor destacado, Iiro Juntunen (Solacide, Ravaged Earth).

Juha tiene un año de formación académica en canto clásico. Somos muy afortunados de tenerlo a bordo. Ha llevado nuestro trabajo vocal a un nivel completamente nuevo.

MiM: Excelente diseño de portada para el single. ¿Quién estuvo a cargo?

PP:Juha es diseñador gráfico en obra civil. También hace las portadas. El modelo es solo una foto de archivo, no una persona específica. El personaje se parece a “el fantasma” en la historia de la canción.

MiM: Cuéntame sobre la experiencia de compartir escenario con artistas internacionales como Katatonia, Samael, Omnium Gatherum y de gira con bandas del norte de Europa como Insomnium, Nile y Keep of Kalessin.

PP: Se podrían compartir muchas grandes historias. Elegiré uno. Fue la primera vez que conocimos a Omnium Gatherum, alrededor del año 2009, en un show en Oulu. Nuestra banda llegó al lugar en una furgoneta de gira con la mitad de nuestros músicos desnudos. Abrimos las puertas de la camioneta y ahí estaban los miembros de Omnium Gatherum. No preguntes por qué hicimos esto. Ese fue el comienzo de la colaboración entre las dos bandas.

Siempre es un honor tocar con los grandes nombres de sus respectivos géneros. Nuestro objetivo es hacer esto también en el futuro; queremos centrarnos en conciertos y giras de calidad.

MiM: ¿Planes de conciertos o giras en los próximos meses?

PP: Hicimos dos shows excelentes ahora en primavera y nuestro objetivo es hacer algunos más para fin de año. El tiempo restante trabajaremos en escribir y grabar nuestro próximo tercer álbum. El enfoque principal de nuestros programas es en 2023 después de la publicación de nuestro álbum. Actualmente estamos negociando con algunas agencias de reservas y gestiones.

MiM: ¿Cómo has vivido el confinamiento y la pandemia hasta ahora?

PP: Al igual que con muchas otras bandas, también comenzamos a aprovechar la era digital enviando pistas de un lado a otro y usando estaciones de trabajo de audio digital para trabajar con nuevas melodías. Venimos de un entorno de tocar e improvisar activamente, por lo que fue un gran salto para nosotros en nuestra forma de trabajar.

MiM: Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.

"It was heavily leaning on the progressive and experimental most interesting groups"

Pressure Points is a Finland Progressive Metal band that last February 25 released the single "The Night Inside", belonging to the album that will be released in 2023 via Art Gates Records 

MiM: Hello guys! How are you? 

PP: Hi. It’s Vili Auvinen (drummer, lyricist) from Pressure Points doing this interview. I’m doing well. Summer is coming here in Finland and life is good.

MiM: Pressure Points is founded 16 years ago. So I would like you to comment on the beginnings of the band? How did the idea of forming the band come about? How would you value the work done by you in all these years?

PP: It started as a summer project between Kari Olli (lead guitar, growls) and me. We met on a beach in our hometown and quickly noticed that we shared the same taste in music. It was heavily leaning on the progressive and experimental groups that we found most interesting. We started to jam a lot and soon noticed that we had plenty of material ready for recording. That’s how we made our first demo and started the long journey as a band.

The band has been alive for a respectable amount of time although there have been ups and downs. Now in 2022, we have a very strong drive, and we look forward to the next year with the release of our third album.

MiM: Listening to the single "The Night Inside" I realize the excellent musical work done by you. A mix between Death/Progressive Black. Tell me about this new production? 

PP: The first versions of “The Night Inside” were already existing in 2017. The song went through a heavy evolution. It was revamped many times. The sketches for other songs for the album were formed around 2017 – 2019. The lyrical themes are still a bit open to comment on. Musical themes vary from heaviest death metal to the mellowest passages; output being something like if Gojira would be put into a blender with Toto.   

Most of the song sketches coming to the album are done by Veli-Matti Kyllönen (keyboards, vocals, lyricist) and Saku (guitar, not in the band anymore). All of us participate in the arrangements that typically take a lot of time with songs as long as ours.

Drums were recorded in a studio. All other instruments and vocals were done at our homes or training cribs around Finland. Name of the album is yet to be decided.

MiM:  I am struck by the different vocal registers that are heard. Are all the voices performed by Juha Tretjakov? Is his training as a vocalist empirical or academic?

PP: All the clean vocals and high growls in “The Night Inside” are sung by Juha, stems by Juha, Mika (ex-member) Oinonen and Veli-Matti. Low grunts were grunted by a featuring growler Iiro Juntunen (Solacide, Ravaged Earth). 

Juha has one year of educational background in classical singing. We are so fortunate to have him on board. He has taken our vocal work to a whole new level.

MiM: Excellent single cover design. Who was in charge? 

PP:Juha is a graphic designer at civil work. He does the cover arts as well. The model is just a stock photo, not a specific person. The character resembles “the ghost” in the story of the song. 

MiM: Tell me about the experience of sharing the stage with international artists such as Katatonia, Samael, Omnium Gatherum, and touring with bands from Northern Europe such as Insomnium, Nile, and Keep of Kalessin?

PP: Many great stories could be shared. I’ll pick one. It was the first time we met Omnium Gatherum, around the year 2009, at a show in Oulu. Our band arrived at the venue in a tour van with half of our members naked. We opened the van doors and there they were members of Omnium Gatherum. Don’t ask why we did this. That was the start of a collaboration between the two bands.

It’s always an honor to play with the big names from their respective genres. We aim to do this in the future as well; we want to focus on quality gigs and tours.

MiM: Concert plans or tours in the coming months?

PP: We did two excellent shows now in spring and we aim to do a few more by the end of the year. In the remaining time we will work on writing and recording our upcoming third album. The main focus for our shows is in 2023 after our album is published. We are currently negotiating with a few booking agencies and management.

MiM: How have you experienced confinement and the pandemic so far?

PP: As with many other bands, we also started to take an advantage of the digital age by sending tracks back and forth and using digital audio workstations to work with new tunes. We come from a background of active playing and jamming so there was a big leap for us in our ways of working.

MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers?
