"Tocar en vivo es una gran parte de lo que es esta banda"
Raven, la leyenda de la NWOBHM, lanzará el álbum 'Leave ‘Em Bleeding' a través del prestigioso sello discográfico Steamhammer/SPV el 30 de septiembre. Made in Metal habla con John Gallagher, líder, vocalista y bajista de la banda, para conocer los detalles de este nuevo álbum y algo más.
MiM: Hola John! El próximo año será el 40 aniversario del lanzamiento del álbum 'All for One' (1983). ¿Alguna reedición para celebrar?
JG: Hola Raúl! El 40 aniversario de 'All for One', un gran álbum para nosotros en muchos sentidos. El metal estaba en auge y estábamos presionando mucho contra nuestro sello discográfico, insistiendo en que trabajábamos con un productor de renombre en un estudio real, y valió la pena.
MiM: ¿Cómo fue trabajar con Michael Wagener y Udo Dirkschneider en la producción del álbum?
JG: Trabajar con Michael Wagener y Udo fue genial. Aportaron mucho al proyecto. Michael es el genio sonoro que es y, por supuesto, conseguimos que Udo cantara conmigo en algunas canciones. Fue un trabajo duro, pero hombre, ¡nos divertimos!
MiM: ¿Qué canciones de este álbum no puedes dejar de tocar en vivo?
JG: Todavía tocamos "Take control", "Mind over metal" y "Break the chain" y, con bastante frecuencia, "All for one" y "Hung draw and quartered". El año que viene planeamos hacer shows con “All for One” en su totalidad!
MiM: 'Leave ‘Em Bleeding' (SteamHammer/SPV, 2022) suena áspero, rápido, pesado y agresivo. ¡Puro Speed Metal/Thrash Metal! Seguramente son el trío más poderoso del Metal en la actualidad. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción musical del disco? ¿Quién estuvo a cargo de la producción?
JG: Bueno, como es una compilación, es una mezcla en cuanto a producción, tienes "Necessary evil", "Space station #5", "Destroy all monsters", "Tank thread" grabado por Kevin 131 y "Metal City" y "Rock this Town" todos grabados por Michael Wagener, pero el crédito de producción es para nosotros en todo. ¡Mike (Heller, nuestro baterista) mezcló las dos pistas en vivo!
MiM: “Space Station #5” y “Malice In Geordieland” son canciones que me llaman la atención porque su sonido es más cercano al Heavy Metal de los 80's. ¿Qué me puedes decir al respecto?
JG: Bueno, "Space station # 5" es una canción de Montrose, solíamos terminar nuestros programas con ella cuando éramos niños a finales de los 70, y "Malice in Geordieland" es una mirada divertida a nuestras raíces. Probablemente sea imposible de descifrar como la canté con nuestro fuerte acento inglés del noreste de "Geordie", pero se trata de los clubes y bares de rock que frecuentábamos a finales de los 70 y principios de los 80, ¡una canción divertida!
MiM: ¿Cómo surgió la idea de incluir dos canciones de la banda tocando en vivo?
JG: Tocar en vivo es una gran parte de lo que es esta banda, y representar eso definitivamente era algo que queríamos hacer. "Crash bang wallop" es parte de nuestro álbum en vivo de 2019 "Screaming Murder Death From Above - live in Aalborg" y "Stay hard" es una versión en vivo inédita de EE. UU. grabada en 2017, ¡ambos muestran lo que somos!
MiM: John, en este disco se nota mucho lo bien que eres como vocalista, demuestras que estás en excelentes condiciones. ¿Cómo logras mantener esa fuerza en tu voz a pesar de los años?
JG: ¡Gracias! Siempre he cuidado de mí y de mi voz. Nunca he fumado y nunca bebo. Consígueme una buena noche de sueño y cantaré bien. ¡Noche tras noche!
MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo en la banda a la hora de componer, estructurar y decidir qué canciones o composiciones formarán parte de un álbum?
JG: Realmente siempre ha sido lo mismo. A cualquiera de nosotros se le ocurrirá una idea básica para una canción o incluso un riff, luego los demás contribuirán y la agregarán. A veces nos sentamos todos juntos e improvisamos cosas desde cero, otras veces puedo tener una canción completamente realizada, luego los demás dicen "Me encanta esto, pero cambiemos eso... etc etc" y casi todo lo que lo hace mejor es lo que estamos buscando.
MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum?
JG: Hicimos un festival en Sao Paulo, Brasil, el 4 de septiembre, luego una gira completa de más de 40 fechas por Estados Unidos a partir del 22 de septiembre. ¡Donde estamos haciendo el álbum "Wiped out" en su totalidad! ¡En 2023 tenemos una gira por el Reino Unido en marzo donde haremos el álbum "All for one" en su totalidad, y estaremos trabajando en Australia, Japón, Europa y Sudamérica! ¡Sin mencionar un nuevo álbum de estudio en mayo!
MiM: Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.

NWOBHM legends Raven will release the album "Leave 'Em Bleeding" via the prestigious Steamhammer/SPV record label on September 30. Made in Metal speaks with John Gallagher, leader, vocalist and bassist of the band to find out the details of this new album.
MiM: Hi John! Next year will be the 40th anniversary of the release of the album "All for One" (1983). Any reissue to celebrate?
JG: Hi Raul! 40 year anniversary for "All for One", a big album for us in so many ways. Metal was booming and we were pushing hard against our record label, insisting we worked with a name producer at a real studio, and it paid off big time.
MiM: How was working with Udo Dirkschneider in the production of the album?
JG: Working with Michael Wagener and Udo was a blast. They brought so much to the project. Michael being the sonic genius that he is, and of course, we got Udo to sing with me on a few songs. It was hard work, but man, we had fun!
MiM: What songs from this album you can't stop playing live?
JG: We still play “Take control”, “Mind over metal” and “Break the chain” and quite often slip in “All for one” and “Hung drawn and quartered “....and next year we plan to do shows with the “All for One” album played in its entirety!
MiM: “Leave ‘Em Bleeding” (SteamHammer/SPV, 2022) sounds rough, fast, heavy and aggressive. Pure Speed Metal/Thrash Metal! They are surely the most powerful trio in Metal today. How was the process of recording and musical production of the album? Who was in charge of the production?
JG: Well, as it’s a compilation it’s a mixed bag production-wise, you have “Necessary evil”, “Space station #5”, “Destroy all monsters”, “Tank treads” recorded by Kevin 131 and the “Metal City” tracks and “Rock this Town” all recorded by Michael Wagener, but production credit goes to ourselves on everything. Mike (Heller, our drummer) actually mixed both the live tracks!
MiM: “Space Station #5” and “Malice In Geordieland” are songs that catch my attention because their sound is closer to the Heavy Metal of the 80's. What can you tell me about it?
JG: Well “Space station # 5" is a Montrose song, we used to finish our shows with it as kids back in the late 70's, and "Malice in Geordieland" is a fun look at our roots. It's probably impossible to decipher as I have sung it in our thick "Geordie" northeast English accent but it's all about the rock clubs and bars we frequented in the late 70's/early 80's, a fun song!
MiM: How did the idea of including two songs of the band playing live come up?
JG: Playing live is a huge part of what this band is all about, and representing that was definitely something we wanted to do. “Crash bang wallop” is off our 2019 live album “Screaming Murder Death From Above - live in Aalborg" and "Stay hard" is an unreleased live version from The USA recorded in 2017, both of them show what we are all about!
MiM: John, on this album it's very noticeable how well you are as a vocalist, you show that you are in excellent condition. How do you manage to maintain that strength in your voice despite the years?
JG: Thank you! I've always looked after myself and my voice. I've never smoked and never drink. Get me a good night’s sleep and I'll sing well. Night after night!
MiM: How is the creative process in the band now of composing, structuring and deciding which songs or compositions will be part of an album?
JG: It's really always been the same. Either one of us will come up with a basic song idea or even a riff, then the others chip in and add to it. Sometimes we all sit together and jam stuff up from scratch, other times I may have a fully realized song, then the others say "I love this, but let's change that... etc etc" and pretty much anything that makes it better is what we are looking for.
MiM: What plans do you have to promote this album?
JG: We are doing a festival in Sao Paulo, Brazil on September 4th, then a full 40+ date USA tour starting September 22nd. Where we are doing the "Wiped out" album in it's entirety! In 2023 we have a UK tour in March where we will do the "All for one" album in its entirety, and are working on Australia, Japan, Europe and South America! Not to mention a brand new studio album in May!
