"Como grupo podemos estar de acuerdo en que el Heavy Metal es lo más influyente"
La banda de thrash metal Tyrant, fundada en 2012 por los hermanos Philip y Andrew Winters con sede en Lasing, Michigan lanzó el álbum "The Lowest Level" el pasado 2022 de septiembre vía Pavement Entertainment. Made in Metal habla con Philip, vocalista y guitarrista, para conocer todo sobre este disco.
MiM: Hola, es un placer hablar contigo Philip. Cuéntame sobre los inicios de la banda?
TY: ¡Encantado de conocerte Raúl! La banda la formamos Andrew y yo cuando estábamos en el instituto. Ya habíamos estado tocando nuestros respectivos instrumentos durante algunos años y decidimos empezar con un grupo a una edad bastante temprana. Chuck y Sal se unieron a la banda en 2021 pero ambos han estado en bandas antes de Tyrant.
MiM: Me gustaría saber si desde el principio ya tenían muy claro el sonido que tendría la banda.
TY: En realidad no, y todavía no estamos seguros de qué "sonido" tenemos. Todo lo que sabemos es que escribimos música que nos suena bien y que tiende a ser heavy metal, a veces un poco de rock and roll.
MiM: "The Lowest Level" (Pavement Entertainment, 2022) es un álbum excelente. Un sonido puro y duro. Thrash metal de la vieja escuela. ¿Qué me puedes decir de este álbum?
TY: ¡Gracias! Este álbum fue escrito principalmente con todo el tiempo de inactividad de estar sentado en casa los últimos dos años, sin poder tocar muchos shows. Con todo el tiempo extra, incluso escribimos y reescribimos partes cinco o seis veces sólo para asegurarnos de que fueran lo mejor posible.
MiM: ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción?
TY: Por primera vez nos autoprodujimos y grabamos todo por nuestra cuenta. Estuvimos cerca de un mes probando diferentes micrófonos y colocaciones de micrófonos, afinaciones, equipos, etc. para conseguir el mejor sonido posible. Lo grabamos todo en nuestro local de ensayo con un portátil. Andrew y yo hicimos toda la producción y edición. Alex Parra, de Second Sight Sound, se encargó de la mezcla y la masterización.
MiM: En algunas canciones como "Sins of the Many", siento en la voz una marcada influencia de Mercyful Fate y King Diamond. ¿Qué puedes decirme al respecto?
TY: "Sins of the Many" era una de esas canciones que no sabía muy bien cómo abordar vocalmente, así que Andrew me sugirió que intentara gritar todo lo que pudiera y ¡supongo que funcionó!
MiM: "Worldstone" es un tema con una fuerza increíble. ¿De qué trata la letra de esta canción?
TY: "Worldstone" trata sobre las líneas guías mágicas que recorren la Tierra y sobre el uso del maná dentro de esas líneas guías para hacer magia. Además, la canción habla de cómo casi todas las siete maravillas del mundo parecen haber sido construidas justo encima de una intersección de líneas guías, o un "vórtice", donde la reserva de maná es más fuerte, y se especula que utilizaron la reserva de maná para realizar tareas inhumanas, como la construcción de las pirámides. De ahí la frase "Los monolitos que hicieron, desafiaron las leyes del hombre". Lugares como las Pirámides, Stonehenge, etc., todos existen en vórtices de líneas ley.... O eso dicen.
MiM: El sonido de la banda navega entre el Thrash Metal y el Heavy Metal. ¿Cuáles son vuestras principales influencias? ¿Cómo tratáis de incluir elementos personales cuando creáis música?
TY: Todos tenemos nuestras propias influencias personales, pero como grupo podemos estar de acuerdo en que el Heavy Metal es lo más influyente para todos nosotros. A la hora de componer las canciones, nos permitimos expresar las ideas e influencias que tenemos, y luego trabajamos esas ideas en las canciones, o las dejamos para más adelante.
MiM: Tyrant es claramente una banda con un futuro por delante. La profesionalidad y el enfoque de la banda son más que latentes. ¿Dónde os veis dentro de cinco años?
TY: ¡Eso esperamos! Dentro de cinco años, esperamos que la banda esté en una posición en la que todos podamos componer y salir de gira a tiempo completo sin ninguna otra obligación para mantenernos. Nos gustaría llegar a Europa en el próximo año más o menos para promocionar el álbum al otro lado del charco.
MiM: ¿Qué ventajas y apoyo os aporta pertenecer a Pavement Entertainment en estos tiempos tan difíciles?
TY: Pavement ha sido fundamental para ayudar con la prensa y las relaciones públicas, algo con lo que siempre hemos luchado nosotros mismos. Y promocionar adecuadamente un lanzamiento es algo ENORME, especialmente siendo una banda pequeña.
MiM: ¿Qué planes tenéis para promocionar este álbum?
TY: No hay nada establecido en piedra todavía, sin embargo, nos gustaría hacer una gira completa en los EE.UU. a finales de la primavera de 2023, tal vez llegar a México y luego ir a Europa y España, Francia, Alemania, Reino Unido, etc. Realmente queremos tocar el álbum en vivo frente a tanta gente como podamos.
MiM: Por último, quería que te sintieras libre de compartir unas palabras con tus fans y nuestros lectores...

Thrash metal band Tyrant, founded in 2012 by brothers Philip and Andrew Winters based in Lasing, Michigan released the album “The Lowest Level” last September 2022 via Pavement Entertainment. Made in Metal talks to Philip, vocalist and guitarist, to find out everything about this album.
MiM: Hello, it is a pleasure to talk with the band. Tell me about the beginnings of the band?
TY: Nice to meet you, Raul! The band was formed by Andrew and me (Philip) when we were back in high school. We had already been playing our respective instruments for a few years and decided to start the band at a pretty young age. Chuck and Sal joined the band back in 2021 but have both been in bands before Tyrant.
MiM: I would like to know if they were already very clear about the sound that the band would have from the beginning.
TY: Not really, and we're still kind of unsure of what 'sound' we have. All we know is that we write music that sounds good to us and that tends to be heavy metal, sometimes a bit rock and roll.
MiM: “The Lowest Level” (Pavement Entertainment, 2022) is an excellent album. Pure and hard sound. Old school thrash metal. What can you tell me about this album?
TY: Thank you! This album was written mostly with all the downtime from sitting at home the past two years, and not being able to play many shows. With all of the extra time, we even wrote and rewrote parts five or six times just to make sure they were as good as they could be.
MiM: How was the recording and production process? In which recording studio did it take place? Who was its producer?
TY: For the first time, we actually self-produced and recorded everything on our own. We spent about a month just trying different microphones/mic placements, tunings, equipment, etc. to get the best possible sound. We tracked everything in our rehearsal space on a laptop. Andrew and I did all of the production and editing. Alex Parra of Second Sight Sound did the mixing and mastering!
MiM: In some songs like “Sins of the Many”, I feel in the voice a marked influence of Mercyful Fate and King Diamond. What can you tell me about it?
TY: “Sins of the Many” was one of those songs I wasn't quite sure how to approach vocally, so Andrew suggested I just try to scream it as much as possible and I guess it worked!
MiM: “Worldstone” is a theme with incredible strength. What are the lyrics of this song about?
TY: “Worldstone” is about magical ley lines that run throughout the Earth and using the mana within those ley lines to perform magick. Additionally, the song touches on how almost all of the seven wonders of the world seem to have been built right on top of a ley line intersection, or a 'vortex', where the mana pool is the strongest, and it is speculated that they used the mana pool to perform inhuman tasks, like build the Pyramids. Hence the line 'Monoliths they made, defied the laws of Man'. Places like the Pyramids, Stone Hedge, etc. all exist on ley line vortexes.... Or so they say!
MiM: The band's sound navigates between Thrash Metal and Heavy Metal. What are your main influences? How do you try to include personal elements when creating music?
TY: We all have our own personal influences, but as a group, we can all agree on Heavy Metal is the most influential for all of us. When it comes to writing songs, we kind of allow each other to express whatever ideas and influences we have, and then maybe we work those ideas into the songs, or we put them on the back burner for later.
MiM: Tyrant is clearly a band with a future ahead of them. The band's professionalism and focus are more than latent. Where do you see yourself in five years?
TY: We hope so! Five years from now, we expect the band to be in a position where we can all write and tour full-time without any other obligations to support ourselves. We would like to get to Europe in the next year to promote the album across the pond.
MiM: What advantages and support do belonging to Pavement Entertainment bring you in such difficult times?
TY: Pavement has been instrumental in helping with Press and PR, something we have always struggled with ourselves. And properly promoting a release is a HUGE deal, especially as a smaller band.
MiM: What plans do you have to promote this Album?
TY: Nothing set in stone just yet, however, we would like to do a Full US Tour in late Spring of 2023, maybe hit Mexico and then go over to Europe and so Spain, France, Germany, UK, etc. We really want to play the album live in front of as many people as we can.
