"Todos somos grandes fans de NWOBHM y de muchas bandas de los 70"
Volvemos a conversar con la banda sueca de Hard Rock con influencias de Heavy Metal llamada The Riven, quienes lanzaran su nuevo álbum titulado 'Peace and Conflict' el 25 de noviembre a través del sello The Sign Records. Esta vez es el otro guitarrista, Joakim Sandegar, quien nos habla sobre el disco y la historia de la banda.
MiM: ¿Cuéntame sobre los inicios de la banda?
JS: Así que la banda empezó en Londres mientras Totta, Max y Arnau estudiaban allí. Después de dos años allí, decidieron trasladar la banda de regreso a Estocolmo y completaron la formación con Joakim como segundo guitarrista y Jussi reemplazando a Olof en la batería. ¡Todos en la banda han tenido proyectos antes!
MiM: “Peace and Conflict” (The Sign Records, 2022) tiene un sonido espectacular, en los años 80. ¡¡Excelente!! ¿Qué me puedes decir de este álbum?
JS: Bueno, estamos muy orgullosos de este álbum, es un cóctel de todas nuestras influencias. Compartimos muchos gustos musicales, por lo que la base es común y luego todos pueden agregar su parte favorita a la mezcla. El rock de los 80 es una gran parte de nuestro gusto común, ¡ja, ja!
MiM: Escuchando el álbum siento una conexión entre todas las canciones. ¿"Peace and Conflict" es un álbum conceptual?
JS: Si bien puede que no sea un álbum conceptual per se, toca algún tema que puede relacionarse entre sí, lo que hace que se sienta conectado.
MiM: El dúo de Arnau Diaz, Joakim Sandegård a las guitarras, junto con la base de Max Ternebring al bajo y Jussi Kalla a la batería hacen que este disco suene impresionante. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción?
JS: Grabamos todo nosotros mismos en una casa de campo en el sur de Suecia. El proceso tomó alrededor de dos semanas, pero sentimos que teníamos mucha libertad y que el entorno era muy inspirador. Arnau lo produjo él mismo y actuó como ingeniero, ¡así que realmente fue el MVP de este álbum!
MiM: En canciones como "On Time" y "The Taker" siento una marcada influencia de bandas como Velvet Revolver, The Who, Vardis, Prowler y los primeros discos de Iron Maiden entre otras. ¿Cuáles son las influencias de la banda a la hora de componer nuevo material?
JS: No te equivocas, todos somos grandes fans de NWOBHM y de muchas bandas de los 70 como The Who. Ayuda mucho cuando tenemos conocimiento común y puedes hacer referencia a algo al grabar y todos saben a qué te refieres.
MIM: Hay un instrumental que se llama "La puerta del tiempo". ¡Un solo de guitarra acústica con un sonido flamenco! ¿Cómo surgió la idea?
JS: Sentimos que la canción necesitaba algún tipo de intro y Arnau es de Cataluña y sabe un poco de flamenco. ¡Así que se le ocurrió esa pieza musical y todos pensamos que encajaba muy bien!
MiM: Totta Ekebergh tiene una voz increíble! ¿Tiene una formación académica o es empírica?
JS: Ha estado cantando toda su vida, mientras asistía a una escuela de música, diría que principalmente piensa en sí misma escuchando sus canciones favoritas.
MiM: Excelente diseño de portada de disco. ¿Quién estaba a cargo?
JS: La portada del álbum fue hecha por Maarten Donders. ¡Hemos trabajado con él antes y es increíble!
MiM: La crítica especializada los define como Heavy Metal, aunque yo los siento más cercanos al Hard Rock. ¿Qué me puedes decir al respecto?
JS: No sé, creo que esa pregunta es realmente para los críticos. Nos gusta el heavy metal tanto como el hard rock. También tenemos sonidos fuera de esos géneros, la gente necesita categorizar las cosas y lo que crea que encaja, encaja con nosotros.
MiM: ¿Podemos dar por hecho el sonido de la banda o, por el contrario, son una banda inquieta a la que le gusta innovar y abrir nuevas propuestas?
JS: Creo que hay un sonido central que no se perderá en ningún momento, estamos inspirados en tantas cosas que podemos sonar un poco diferentes, pero el núcleo que es The Riven está ahí para quedarse.
MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo en la banda al momento de componer, estructurar y decidir qué canciones o composiciones formarán parte de un disco?
JS: Es decisión de todos, básicamente escribimos todo juntos. Alguien puede aparecer con una idea y luego todos trabajamos en ella. Las letras son lo único que es principalmente una persona, pero luego Totta es quien las canta, por lo que necesita algo con lo que relacionarse, el resto ayudará si se atasca.
MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum?
JS: Solo tenemos dos shows más en Suecia este año (2022) como shows de lanzamiento del álbum. ¡Entonces planeamos hacer la mayor gira posible el próximo año en apoyo del álbum!
MiM: Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.

Swedish Hard Rock band with Heavy Metal influences called The Riven, will be releasing their new album entitled "Peace and Conflict" on November 25 under the record label The Sign Records. Made in Metal, talks with Joakim Sandegar, one of the guitar players to learn everything about this album and the band's history.
MiM: Tell me about the beginnings of the band.
JS: So the band began in London while Totta, Max and Arnau were studying there. After two years there they decided to move the band back to Stockholm and completed the line-up with Joakim as a second guitar player and Jussi replacing Olof on drums. Everyone in the band has had projects before!
MiM: “Peace and Conflict” (The Sign Records, 2022) have a spectacular sound, in the 80's. Excellent!! What can you tell me about this album?
JS: Well we’re really proud of this album, it’s a cocktail of all of our influences. We share a lot of tastes in music so the foundation is common and then everyone got to add their favorite part to the mix. 80s rock is a big part of our common taste ha ha!
MiM: Listening to the album I feel a connection between all the songs. "Peace and Conflict" is a concept album.
JS: While it might not be a concept album per se it touches on some subjects that can relate to each other making it feel connected.
MiM: The duo of Arnau Diaz, Joakim Sandegård on guitars, along with the base of Max Ternebring on bass and Jussi Kalla on drums make this album sound impressive. How were the recording and production process?
JS: We recorded everything ourselves in a cottage down south in Sweden. The process took around two weeks but we felt we had a lot of freedom and the surroundings were very inspiring. Arnau produced it himself and acted as an engineer so he was the MVP of this album really!
MiM: In songs like "On Time" and "The Taker" I feel a marked influence from bands like Velvet Revolver, The Who, Vardis, Prowler, and the first Iron Maiden albums among others. What are the band's influences when it comes to composing new material?
JS: You’re not wrong there, we’re all very big fans of NWOBHM and a lot of 70s bands like the who. It helps a lot when we have common knowledge and you can reference something when recording and everyone know what you mean.
MIM: There is an instrumental called "La Puerta del Tiempo". An acoustic guitar solo with a flamenco sound! How did the idea come about?
JS: We felt the song needed an intro of some sort and Arnau is from Catalonia and knows a bit of flamenco. So he came up with that piece of music and we all thought it fitted very nicely!
MiM: Totta Ekebergh has an amazing voice!! Does she have an academic background or is it empirical?
JS: She’s been singing her whole life, while going to some music school I would say she’s mainly self thought listening to her favorites
MiM: Excellent album cover design. Who was in charge?
JS: The album cover was done by Maarten Donders. We’ve worked with him before and he is amazing!
MiM: Specialized critics define them as Heavy Metal, although I feel they are closer to Hard Rock. What can you tell me about it?
JS: I don’t know, that question is really for the critics I think. We like heavy metal as much as hard rock. We also have sounds outside of those genres, people need to categorize things and whatever they think fit, fits us.
MiM: Could we take the sound of the band for granted or, on the contrary, are they a restless band that likes to innovate and open up new proposals?
JS: There is a core sound that’s not gonna get lost anytime I think, we are inspired by so many things that we might sound a bit different but the core that is The Riven is there to stay.
MiM: How is the creative process in the band at the moment of composing, structuring, and deciding which songs or compositions will be part of an album?
JS: It’s everyone’s decision, we write basically everything together. Someone might show up with an idea and then we all work on it. Lyrics are the only thing that is mainly one person, but then Totta is the one singing them so she needs something to relate to, the rest will help out if she gets stuck.
MiM: What plans do you have to promote this album?
JS: We only got two more shows in Sweden this year(2022) as album release shows. Then we plan to tour as much as possible next year in support of the album!
