Stavros: ¡Hola y gracias por concedernos esta entrevista! Marko y yo solíamos tener una banda antes de esta llamada Exiled Genesis, era una banda más enfocada en el death metal melódico. Marko, el actual guitarrista de Bloody Falls, solía ser el cantante al principio, luego el guitarrista/cantante y luego el guitarrista completo. Alrededor de ese tiempo en que Marko se convirtió en guitarrista a tiempo completo, teníamos la sensación de que queríamos ser más pesados y oscuros y que no podíamos hacer un cambio tan dramático en el estilo de música que tocábamos en ese momento. Stavros: La música sabia de Bloody Falls es la idea de crear un género de metal que pueda atraer a los fanáticos de todo tipo de metal a escuchar esta banda. Nuestra banda está formada por miembros que tienen diferentes gustos por la música metal y, sin embargo, a todos nos encanta la música de Bloody Falls además de nuestra diferencia de gustos. Teníamos esas 5 canciones en la lista y se me ocurrió la idea de hacer un EP relacionado con la muerte titulado "Dying is Easy" después de la canción.

 

 

Stavros: Tu descripción fue acertada, esto es exactamente lo que pretendemos hacer como banda, por lo que este EP realmente da en el blanco de lo que somos y lo que hacemos. “Dying Is Easy” es básicamente la base de lo que sigue para Bloody Falls, música oscura, melódica, con ritmo, pesada y explosiva. En nuestra opinión, esta es una obra de arte oscura increíble y compacta. Trabajar en este EP requirió mucho sentimiento; queríamos que la gente entendiera el concepto de cada canción con solo escuchar los instrumentos y el tono de la voz. Esto es como una montaña rusa emocional si te adentras en ella y prestas atención a todos los detalles registrados y expresados. Realmente llevó nuestros estándares a otro nivel con solo grabar este EP.

 

 

Stavros: Como compositor principal de Bloody Falls, yo mismo fui y seré el productor, por lo general no nos gusta que la ayuda externa interfiera cuando se trata de grabar nuestras propias canciones, especialmente porque tenemos nuestro propio estudio (VStudio Finland) y nuestro propio Equipo de grabación. Normalmente trabajo con pasos, así que te lo explicaré paso a paso.

 

1. Una vez que tenemos lista la etapa de planificación, es decir, título del proyecto, cantidad de canciones, qué canciones, procedemos a iniciar la fase de preproducción/demostración. Este es un paso vital que toda banda debe hacer antes de dirigirse a las grabaciones finales. En esta fase aprendemos, mejoramos y probamos cosas para las canciones, sin mencionar la gran manera de prepararse mental y físicamente para las grabaciones finales.

 

2. Tiempo para fijar fechas para cada miembro de la banda para las grabaciones finales. Por lo general, reservamos 3 días de 8 horas para que cada miembro de la banda grabe su instrumento durante todo el proyecto. Los tiempos dependen de la preparación de cada individuo, por lo que podría demorar 1 día o 3.

 

3. Batería iempre primero. Para "Dying is Easy" usamos 23 micrófonos para la batería, porque si no se necesita algo, siempre puedes silenciarlo en la fase de mezcla, pero si falta algo, entonces es un problema. Siempre probando cómo suena cada micrófono y si necesita alguna alteración en su posición o cambio completo.

 

4. El bajo viene después. Siempre grabo un canal DI y 1 micrófono directamente en un gabinete, siempre elijo Shure SM7B porque tiene frecuencias bajas increíbles.

 

5. Tiempo de Guitarras. Siempre un canal 1 DI y luego también 1 o 2 micrófonos directamente a un gabinete, siempre uno de los micrófonos es un Shure SM57. Pruebo cada altavoz y posición antes de decidir el sonido grabando una muestra de cada posición; lo mismo se aplica para el bajo.

 

6. Voces. Esta es la parte más fácil de configurar, pero la más desafiante para obtener la sensación correcta para cada parte de la canción. Siempre uso Shure SM7B para voces ásperas, porque seamos realistas, no hay nada mejor para este propósito. Para los coros usamos el mismo micrófono, pero para las voces de la multitud usamos hasta 3 micrófonos ambientales y uno envolvente para poder gritar las líneas.

 

7. Agregar y sincronizar todas las cosas adicionales como pistas midi, por ejemplo, como coros, cuerdas, etc.

 

8. El último paso es enviar todos los archivos en bruto a nuestro técnico de mezclas Max Morton (también productor de Jinjer) para editar, mezclar y masterizar las canciones. Una vez realizado este paso el proyecto está 100% completo.

 

Así que ahí lo tienes, así hacemos la magia que llega a tus oídos. Es un proceso de tiempo enorme que puede llevar de 8 meses a 1 año y medio dependiendo de muchas cosas. También es muy caro, imagina de 4 a 5 dígitos fácilmente, lo que nuevamente depende de muchas cosas.

 

 

 

Stavros: Sorprendentemente no, no es un álbum conceptual. Las canciones se crearon en diferentes momentos y no tienen ninguna conexión líricamente, pero cuando estábamos seleccionando canciones para el EP, se nos ocurrió la idea de elegir las canciones que tenían un tema más cercano entre sí. Bueno, el tema en general es sobre asesinos, maldad y muerte en general. "Dying Is Easy" trata sobre Charles Manson, por lo tanto, la introducción de él realmente hablando, nadie sabe realmente si era malvado o no, si era culpable o no. ¿Era una buena persona? No lo parecía de acuerdo con las cosas que estaba predicando, pero ¿realmente asesinó a alguien? La respuesta es no, pero su influencia sí. "Dancing With Flames" es más sobre el subconsciente, todos tienen un lado oscuro, la canción cuenta lo que sucede si decides hacer un viaje a ese lado oscuro aunque sea una vez, por lo general no hay vuelta atrás, no importa cuánto busques. redención, expiación o perdón, estás condenado a sufrir por el resto de tu vida. “Face Your Demise” tiene un tema similar a “Dancing With Flames” y la letra se siente irónicamente como una continuación. Se trata más de probar el mal y la facilidad con la que puedes volverte adicto a él, el día que abrazas el mal y eliges ese camino es el día en que debes comenzar a prepararte para enfrentar tu desaparición, porque es un camino de un solo sentido.

 

"Death By Hanging” es una historia de acusaciones falsas que terminan en la ejecución de una persona, la historia habla sobre el período de espera antes de la muerte. Y por último, pero definitivamente no menos importante, "Reaper Is My Neighbor", esta es la historia de una de las cosas más horribles en la historia humana, los campos de concentración de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Básicamente, todas las personas en esos campamentos tenían a la muerte como su vecino, porque no sabían quién vive y quién muere cada minuto de cada día, por lo que la historia se centra en ese momento y lugar.

 

 

Antero: Bueno gracias! Creo que tengo un tono bastante bajo incluso cuando hablo, por lo que probablemente ayude a crear gruñidos bajos. Mis influencias provienen de bandas antiguas de black metal donde nadie sabía realmente cómo gruñir o gritar "de la manera correcta" y he creado mi forma de cantar a partir de ahí y luego he ido agregando algunas técnicas nuevas del canto más moderno. Así que diría que mi sonido es una mezcla de técnica y sentimiento. Si estás buscando un cantante para tu banda, diría que primero busques un cantante que tenga un sonido que encaje con la música que se supone que estás creando. Stavros: El 90% de todas las canciones provienen directamente de mí. Marko es el segundo mayor contribuyente de riffs y letras y Antero principalmente de letras. Cuanto más progresamos, más contribuyen los otros miembros de la banda. Pero sigo siendo la fuerza impulsora que trae canciones completas a la banda y luego las modificamos muchas veces con nuevas ideas. Entonces, al final del día, todos en la banda tienen algo que ofrecer, tanto en cuanto a ideas como a riffs. Por ejemplo, la canción "Reaper is my Neighbor", la letra está escrita por Antero y alterada por Antero, Mika y yo. Entonces, siempre que alguien crea algo nuevo, tendemos a cambiarlo un poco y tratamos de mejorarlo de alguna manera, para que se convierta en un esfuerzo de la banda.

Stavros: Hello and thank you for granting us this interview! Me and Marko used to have a band before this named Exiled Genesis, it was a more melodic death metal-focused band. Marko the present guitarist of Bloody Falls used to be the singer at first, then guitarist/singer, and then full-on guitarist. Around the time that Marko became a full-time guitarist we had the feeling that we wanted to go heavier and darker and we couldn't do that dramatic of a change to the music style we played at that time. So we had a meeting and decided to put Exiled Genesis to rest and start a new band from scratch. I came up with the name Bloody Falls for the band and thus at 2017, it started. Straight away we released a single titled "Thanatos" which would become the title of the first album, by the second single "Amongst the Living Dead" we got offered to sign a record deal with Inverse Records and so the ball started rolling faster than ever for the band. Immediately when the band was created we changed bass player cause we weren't happy with the person playing at that time and thus Mika Lehtinen (former Deathing guitarist) joined the band. After the release of our debut album "Thanatos" we decided to change drummer, so Rami Vartiainen (former Deathing bassist) became the new drummer. And last but not least we felt that the band needed a new singer because Tanawats voice didn't fit the band sadly; also there was a difference in life goals and what music means to each other. So Antero Hakala (former Ruindom singer) joined the band. Since that time the band has operated well than ever before with amazing chemistry, commitment, and similar goals. This lineup won't be changing at any time given the fact that we are all best friends with each other and constantly hang out also outside of the band.

 

 

Stavros: Bloody Falls music wise is the idea to create a metal genre that can bring fans of all types of metal into listening to this one band. Our band consists of band members that have different tastes in metal music and yet all of us love Bloody Falls music despite our difference in taste. The name Bloody Falls comes from the historical Bloody Falls massacre in Canada, we don't try to keep any aesthetics from that incident, I just thought it was a cool metal band name idea and we used it. Aesthetic wise we go more literal with the term Bloody Falls, that's why we have the blood tears running from our eyes as a band look, like I said, literal. About our new EP now, we had around 16 amazing songs for a new album and we didn't want to make a double album or ditch any songs, so we came up with the idea of making a 5 song EP first and then releasing a full-length album. We had those five songs in the list and I came up with the idea to make a death-related EP titled Dying is Easy after the song.

 

Stavros: Your description was spot on, this is exactly what we aim to do as a band, so this EP really hits the mark on what we are and what we do. “Dying Is Easy” is basically the foundation of what's to follow for Bloody Falls, dark, melodic, groovy, heavy and explosive music. In our opinion this is an amazing, tight piece of dark art. Working on this EP took a lot of feeling; we wanted people to understand the concept of each song just by listening to the instruments and tone of the voice. This is like an emotional roller coaster if you get deep into it and pay attention to all the details recorded and expressed. It really took our standards to another level just by recording this EP.

 

Stavros: As the main songwriter for Bloody Falls I myself was and will be the producer, we don't usually like outside help to interfere when it comes to recording our own songs, especially since we have our own studio (VStudio Finland) and our own recording equipment. I usually work with steps, so I'll break it done to you all step by step. 

 

1. Once we have the planning stage ready, that means the project title, amount of songs, and which songs, we proceed to start the preproduction/demoing phase. This is a vital step that every band should do before heading for final recordings. In this phase we learn, improve and test things for the songs, not to mention what a great way of preparing mentally and physically it is for the final recordings.

 

2. Time to set dates for every band member for the final recordings. Usually, we go with booking 3 days of 8 hours for each band member to record their instrument for the entire project. The times depend on the readiness of each individual, so it could take 1 day or 3.

 

3. Drums always first. For Dying is Easy we used 23 microphones for the drums because if something is not needed you can always mute it during the mixing phase, but if something is missing then it's a problem. Always test how every microphone sounds and if it needs any alteration in its position or complete change.

 

4. Bass comes next. I always record one channel DI and 1 microphone directly to a cabinet, I always choose Shure SM7B because it has amazing low frequencies.

 

5. Time for Guitars. Always one 1 DI channel and then also 1 or 2 microphones directly to a cabinet, always one of the microphones is a Shure SM57. I test every single speaker and position before deciding on the sound by recording a sample of each position; the same applies to the bass.

 

6. Vocals. This is the easiest to set up part, but the most challenging to get the right feel for each part of the song. I always use Shure SM7B for rough vocals, cause let's face facts, there's nothing better for this purpose. For backing vocals, we use the same microphone, but for crowd vocals, we use up to 3 ambient microphones and surround one so we can scream the lines.

 

7. Adding and syncing all extra things like midi tracks for example choirs, strings etc.

 

8. The last step is sending all the raw files to our mixing guy Max Morton (also the producer of Jinjer) to edit, mix and master the songs. Once this step is done the project is 100% complete.

 

So there you have it, that's how we do the magic that reaches your ears. It is a huge time process that can take 8 months to 1 and a half years depending on many things. Also, it's really expensive, imagine 4 to 5 digits easily, which again depends on many things.

 

 

Stavros: Surprisingly no, it is not a concept album. The songs were created at different times and have no connection in any way lyrically, but when we were selecting songs for the EP we came up with the idea to pick the songs that were closest topic-wise to each other. Well, the topic overall is about murderers, evil, and death in general. “Dying Is Easy” is about Charles Manson thus the intro of him actually speaking, no one truly knows if he was evil or not, or was he guilty or not. Was he a good person? It didn't look like it according to the things that he was preaching, but did he actually murder anyone? The answer is no, but his influence did. “Dancing With Flames” is more about subconsciousness, everyone has a dark side, the song tells what happens if you even once decide to take a trip into that dark side, usually there's no going back, doesn't matter how much you seek redemption, atonement or forgiveness, you're doomed to suffer for the rest of your life. “Face Your Demise” has a similar topic to “Dancing With Flames” and the lyrics are ironically feeling like a continuation of it. This is more about getting a taste of evil and how easily you can become addicted to it, the day you embrace evil and choose that path is the day you need to start preparing to face your demise because it's a one-way road. “Death By Hanging” is a story of false accusations that end up in the execution of a person, the story talks about the waiting period before death. And last but definitely not least “Reaper Is My Neighbor”, is a story of one of the most horrific things in human history, the concentration camps of World War II. Every person in those camps basically had death as their neighbor, because they didn't know who lives and who dies every minute of every day, so the story focuses on that time and place. 

 

Antero: Well thanks! I think I have a pretty low tone even when I speak so that probably helps when creating low growls. My influences come from older black metal bands where no one really knew how to growl or scream "right way" and I have created my way of singing from there later on I have been adding some new techniques from more modern singing.  So I would say my sound is a mix of technique and feeling. If you are looking for a singer in your band I would say that first look for a singer who has a sound that fits the music that you are supposed to be creating. Usually, singers tend to get better after time if he/she is not one-trick ponies. If you are a new singer looking for a band, try to find a band that pleases you musically and starts with the sound that you are familiar with and fits the music. After everything feels good you can start experimenting and going even more with the feeling. In singing, the feeling should come always first and technique second.

 

 

Stavros: 90% of all the songs come directly from me. Marko is the second biggest contributor to riffs and lyrics and Antero is mostly for lyrics. The more we progress the more the other band members are contributing.  But still, I am the driving force that brings full songs to the band and then we alter them many times with new ideas. So at the end of the day everyone in the band has something to offer both idea-wise and riff-wise. For example, in the song Reaper is my Neighbor the lyrics are written by Antero and altered by myself, Antero, and Mika. So always when someone creates something new we tend to change it a bit and try to improve it somehow, so it becomes a band effort. 

 

Stavros: We are at this present moment planning a tour in Finland with some amazing support bands and a great management/booking agency. If everything goes as we expect it to go then next year will be our first ever outside of Finland tour. We cannot say yet where we will be heading but for sure we'll be getting outside our borders for all of our fans to see us live! Let's tame Finland first with a first tour too!

We are already preparing to start recording our next album and oh my is it the best Bloody Falls to come yet according to what we hear from the demos!
