La banda sueco/noruega de heavy/power metal Saint Deamon lanzó su nuevo álbum 'League of the Serpent' el 21 de abril a través de AFM Records. Excelente oportunidad para conversar con ellos y conocer más sobre la banda y este nuevo álbum.

MiM: "League of the Serpent" (AFM Records, 2023) es un disco que reúne lo mejor del Power Metal de finales de los 80. Velocidad, guitarras cortantes y una voz con un registro excepcional. Háblame de este álbum. ¿De qué se trata?

SD: Este no es realmente un álbum conceptual, pero la mayoría de las canciones del álbum tratan sobre la lucha de una forma u otra. Algunas canciones tratan sobre la lucha física como un guerrero que lucha por sobrevivir. Otras canciones tratan de la lucha psicológica que tenemos contra nosotros mismos y de tratar de salir adelante con nuestro dolor. Las ideas originales para las canciones se crean en el sótano de Toya y luego me envía ideas aproximadas de cómo quiere que progresen las canciones. Y tomo esas ideas y creo mi versión de, o aplico mis ideas sobre las suyas, y a veces hacemos una lluvia de ideas juntos, ya sea en mi casa, en Noruega o en su casa, en Suecia. Le mostramos las canciones al resto de los muchachos para obtener más información y, al final, las grabamos para que las produzca nuestro productor Oscar Nilsson. – Jan Thore (voz).

MiM: ¿Cómo fue la experiencia de trabajar con Oscar Nilsson en Crehate Studios (Scorpions, Crash Diet, In Flames)? ¿Y cuál opinas que fue el aporte de Oscar al sonido de la banda?

SD: Trabajar con Oscar fue bueno, su experiencia grabando música diferente aportó mucho. Nos dio una forma "små progresiva" de hacer el álbum. – Alfred Fridhagen (batería).

MiM: "League of the Serpent" cuando la escucho siento una marcada influencia de bandas como Kamelot, Unisonic y en algunas canciones de Gamma Ray? A la hora de componer nuevo material, ¿cuáles son vuestras influencias?

SD: Tenemos muchas influencias en varios géneros diferentes en realidad. Por supuesto, tenemos todo tipo de metal con nosotros, pero cuando escribo canciones también me inspiro en la música clásica, el pop y el blues. Incluso he tratado de inspirarme en el jazz, pero desafortunadamente no lo he logrado, jaja. –Toya Johansson (guitarra).

MiM: Jan Thore Grefstad es sin duda un vocalista con un registro excepcional. A veces su rango vocal me recuerda a Andy Deris (Helloween).

SD: Muchas gracias. Andy es sin duda un gran cantante con un rango increíble. Pero honestamente. No me gustó su voz cuando escuché Pink Cream 69 por primera vez, pero he llegado a amar su voz. Pero en el momento en que yo era conocido por su voz. ya llevaba muchos años cantando y mi voz y estilo, ya estaba en su sitio. Mis influencias desde una edad más temprana son personas como Ian Gillan, Mike Patton, Ronnie James Dio, Michael Kiske y Bruce Dickinson. Me encanta el hardcore de la vieja escuela, pero una de mis principales inspiraciones en estos días es Roy Khan. No tengo una voz similar a la suya. Pero me encanta su estilo en las líneas melódicas, así que he robado fragmentos aquí y allá, jeje, y por último, pero no menos importante, está Russel Allen. increíble cantante - Jan Thore (voz).

MiM: Me llama la atención la canción "A Lie to Be Undone", es la única que dura más de seis minutos y además tiene una serie de cambios en la impresionante estructura musical. La voz de Jan Thore se siente con sentimiento profundo ya veces desgarrante. Toya Johansson impregna de alma el sonido de la guitarra. ¿Es tan? ¿Cuál es el tema Líricamente hablando? ¿Algún significado especial para la banda?  

SD: Feliz de escuchar que especialmente este llamó tu atención, muchos sentimientos puestos en él. Creo que esta canción sacó lo mejor de todos en la banda, sin restricciones sobre cómo se supone que debemos sonar/tocar, solo diversión sin restricciones. En resumen... No estás atado por la suma de tu pasado ni encadenado por nociones preconcebidas, si eliges no estarlo. Descubre tu interior y déjalo salir. - Nobby Noberg (bajo).

MiM: Una vez que el disco esté disponible para todos los fans de la banda, ¿qué planes tenéis para promocionarlo?

SD: Salir a tocar, por supuesto, y tenemos algunos planes de gira, estad atentos. – Alfred Fridhagen (batería).

Swedish/Norwegian Heavy/Power Metal band Saint Deamon will release their album 'League of the Serpent' on April 21st under the prestigious AFM Records label. Excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to talk to the band to find out everything about the band and their new album.

MiM: 'League of the Serpent' (AFM Records, 2023) is an album that brings together the best of Power Metal from the late 80's. Speed, cutting guitars and a voice with exceptional range. Tell me about this album. what's it about?

SD: This is not really a concept album, but most songs on the album are about struggle in one way or another. Some songs are about the physical struggle as a warrior fighting for survival. Other songs are about the psychological fight we have against ourselves and trying to get by with our grief. The original ideas for the songs are created in Toya´s basement and then he sends me rough ideas of how he wants the songs to progress. And I take those ideas and create my version of to, or apply my ideas on top of his, and we brainstorm sometimes together either in my house in Norway or his house in Sweden. We show the songs to the rest of the guys for more input, and in the end, we go and record it to be produced by our producer Oscar Nilsson. – Jan Thore (vocal).

MiM: How was the experience of working with Oscar Nilsson at Crehate Studios (Scorpions, Crash Diet, In Flames)? And what do you think was Oscar's contribution to the sound of the band?

SD: Working with Oscar was good, his experience recording different music contributed a lot. It gave us a "små progressive" way of making the album. – Alfred Fridhagen (drums).

MiM: "League of the Serpent" when I listen to it I feel a marked influence from bands like Kamelot, Unisonic, and in some Gamma Ray songs? When it comes to composing new material, what are your influences?

SD: We have many influences in several different genres actually. Of course, we have all kinds of metal with us, but when I write songs I also draw inspiration from classical music, pop, and blues. I've even tried to draw inspiration from jazz, but unfortunately, I haven't succeeded there, haha. – Toya Johansson (guitar).

MiM: Jan Thore Grefstad is undoubtedly a vocalist with an exceptional range. Sometimes his vocal range reminds me of Andy Deris (Helloween). Is it so?

SD: Thanks a lot. Andy is without a doubt a great singer with amazing range. But to be honest. I did not like his voice when I first heard Pink Cream 69,  but I have grown to love his voice. But by the time I was known to his voice. i had already been singing for many years and my voice and style were already in place. My influences from a younger age is people like Ian Gillan, Mike Patton, Ronnie James Dio, Michael Kiske, and Bruce Dickinson. I love old-school hardcore but one of my main inspirations these days is Roy Khan. I don’t have a similar voice to his. But I do love his style in melody lines, so I have stolen bits and pieces here and there hehe, and last but far from least is Russel Allen. amazing singer – Jan Thore (vocal).

MiM: The song "A Lie to Be Undone" catches my attention, it is the only one that lasts more than six minutes and also has a series of changes in the impressive musical structure. Jan Thore's voice is felt with deep feeling and at times ripping. Toya Johansson imbues the sound of the guitar with soul. Is it so? What is the theme Lyrically speaking? Any special meaning for the band?

SD: Happy to hear that this one especially caught your attention-lots of feelings put into it. I think this song brought out the best out of everyone in the band, with no restraints on how we’re supposed to sound/play just unrestricted fun. In short… You’re not bound by the sum of your past and chained by preconceived notions if you choose not to be. Find out the inner you and let it out. - Nobby Noberg (bass).

MiM: Once the album is available to all the fans of the band, what plans do you have to promote it?

SD: Go out and play of course and we have some plans about touring, stay tuned. – Alfred Fridhagen (drums).

SD: Well. if you like, or even love our music please push it on your friends and loved ones. I’m not saying lock them in a room with one of our videos for a week. but spread our music so we can come and play for you people, wherever you may be in the world. after over 16 years of playing together, it's about time we start touring the bigger part of the world. book us. and we will come. love from my heart and soul. – Jan Thore (vocal).
