Después de ver el impresionante show de Xandria en el pasado Leyendas del Rock 2015, sentimos la necesidad de entrevistarlos. Una alegre Dianne van Giersbergen amablemente aceptó nuestra solicitud y este es el resultado.

MiM - Hola Dianne, gracias por tu tiempo y atención. Hace poco la banda editó un Ep, Fire and Ashes. Por qué decidieron grabar solo un Ep?
DvG - ¡Hola Tony, gracias por esta entrevista! Bueno, el EP es como un bocado entre comidas, para dejar saber a nuestros fans y seguidores que estamos al máximo y para abrirles el apetito para cuando llegue el próximo álbum. Además, el EP nos brindó la oportunidad de regrabar “Ravenheart” y “Now and Forever” junto a dos versiones, la de  Meat Loaf (“I would do anything for love but I won’t do that”) y la de Sonata Arctica (“Don’t say a Word”).

MiM - Efectivamente, cantaste dos interesantes canciones parte de la discografía previa de Xandria, “Ravenheart” y “Now and Forever”. ¿Por qué? ¿Te sentiste cómoda interpretando canciones que fueron compuestas pensando en otra vocalista?
DvG - Queríamos mantener estas canciones vivas y darle el sonido y el nivel que Xandria ha alcanzando con la salida de Neverworld’s End’. Para mí no fue duro encontrar mi estilo en las canciones durante la grabación. Ten en cuenta que las hemos estado tocando en directo durante bastante tiempo, lo que me ha dado la oportunidad de hacerlas a mi manera.

MiM - Me imaginaba que te sentirías bien con estas composiciones, porque vi el concierto de  Xandria en el Leyendas del Rock festival y quedé muy impresionado. Fue la primera vez que vi a la banda y no me imaginaba que fueras fuerte y al mismo tiempo tan sensual sobre el escenario, junto a una banda que también es muy intensa. Dime, ¿Cómo puedes mantener la fuerza de la música y al mismo tiempo la dulzura de tu feminidad?
DvG - Jajaja, buena pregunta. Nunca había pensado en ello, pero creo que es algo que viene con naturalidad y es solo que soy así.

MiM - Aun cuando eres el foco principal y todas las miradas están puestas en ti, la banda tiene una fuerte presencia. Te recuerdo en una esquina del escenario, y los guitarristas y el bajista en el otro extreme, tú mirándolos a ellos y todos ellos a ti. Fue un bello momento. ¿Ustedes ensayan algunos momentos coreográficos, o todo va saliendo de manera espontánea?
DvG - Ambas. Algunas canciones como por ejemplo ‘Sacrificium’  llevan una pequeña coreografía. Pero para otras canciones, momentos como este solo ocurren sobre el escenario.  Hay elementos que funcionan y los repetimos en distintos conciertos, pero otros solo ocurren durante la magia de una noche.

MiM - Tu primer concierto con Xandria fue en España si mal no me equivoco. ¿Recuerdas como fue tu debut en directo aquella noche? ¿Piensas que Xandria dio un buen concierto en el Leyendas? Te vi sonriente en todo momento así que pienso que todo fue bien.
DvG -¡Lo fue! Tuvimos muy buena respuesta en el Leyendas. Mucha gente vino a vernos y se sumó a la fiesta, y esto, por supuesto, nos puso de buen humor.  Y si, mi primer  concierto con Xandria fue también en España. Fue algo que disfruté, pero debo decir que estaba muy concentrada en que saliera todo bien y no lo saboreé con la intensidad que la ocasión merecía. ¡Pero oye!, esto no significa que no me gustara.

MiM - Eres holandesa y la banda es alemana. ¿Hay grandes diferencias en términos de carácter o costumbres entre los chicos y tú? Pequeñas discusiones banales, ese habitual desorden masculino o algo similar.
DvG -¡Jajaja, no! Siempre hay cosas diferentes que hemos aprendido los unos de los otros en cuanto a comportamiento y preferencias, pero desde que nos conocimos por primera vez, las vibraciones entre nosotros han sido muy buenas.

MiM -¿Recuerdas aquellos días cuando la banda te ofreció el puesto de vocalista?
DvG - Fue el manager de la banda quien me contactó y me ofreció el puesto. El grupo estaba ocupado con la producción del CD Sacrificium, y su productor,  Joost van den Broek les había comentado que yo podría ser encajar muy bien en la formación. Yo me lo pensé seriamente, viajé a Bielefeld para conocerlos, y el resto es historia. Todo el proceso fue muy relajado. 

MiM - Entonces cuando llegaste a la banda, las canciones de  Sacrificium ya estaban escritas. ¿Tuviste la oportunidad de aportar ideas o cambiar algunas partes vocales?
DvG - Si, pero solo algunos detalles, por supuesto. Tuve que estar lista muy rápido para grabar Sacrificium. En Fire and Ashes y el próximo álbum, mi toque personal se hace sentir mucho más.

MiM -¿Piensas mantener tu banda anterior, Ex Libris? He visto que estas promoviendo copias autografiadas de Amygdala con diferente portada, así que a lo mejor no se ha acabado la historia.
DvG - Correcto,  Ex Libris tomó un descanso después que hicimos algunos cambios de personal que necesitábamos. En este momento somos un quinteto de nuevo y estamos ensayando para regresar a al nivel que conllevan los directos. 

MiM -¿Estás consciente de que eres una mujer muy bella y talentosa? Después de escuchar Sacrificium y Fire and Ashes, nadie podría decir que estas en la banda por tus atractivos físicos.
DvG - Jajaja, bueno, gracias por los halagos. Digamos que la belleza está en el ojo del espectador.

MiM -¿Te sientes más cómoda cantando en el mundo del metal que en el de la música clásica? Se pusieron contentos los profesores de ArtEZ con tu determinación de tomar la senda del Heavy Metal?
DvG - Cuando hice las audiciones para entrar en el conservatorio y estudiar música clásica, ya era cantante de Ex Libris. Y te digo más: fue la banda quien me motivó a seguir la senda de la música clásica. Mis profesores siempre lo han sabido y me han apoyado.

MiM - La banda viajará a China en diciembre. ¿Te sientes contenta con la idea? ¿Qué esperas encontrar?
DvG - Sí, estoy muy feliz con la idea, otra marca que hacer en el mapa. Y en cuanto a lo que espero: Me gustaría participar de una aventura como esa con la mente abierta para poder apreciarlo todo y no sentirme decepcionada si encuentro algo que no cubre mis expectativas. A propósito, es un principio que aplico a casi todo en la vida.

MiM - Los estaremos esperando de nuevo en 2016, tal vez para 2016. La banda es impresionante y tú eres especial. Gracias por la entrevista, les deseamos lo mejor.
DvG - Gracias por tu tiempo y para ustedes también lo mejor. ¡Nos vemos en Madrid!

ENGLISH VERSION

After watching the awesome Xandria show during Leyendas del Rock 2015, we felt need to interview them. A cheerful Dianne van Giersbergen accepted nicely our request and this is our conversation.

MiM - Hello Dianne, thank you for your time. The band recently releases an Ep, Fire and Ashes. Why did you decided to record only an Ep?
DvG - Hi Tony, thank you for having me! Well the EP is just a snack in-between to let our fans and followers know what we are up to and to make them even more hungry for the next album. Next to that this EP gave us the chance to re-record ‘Ravenheart’ and ‘Now and Forever’ as well as the Meatloaf (I would do anything for love but I won’t do that) and Sonata Arctica (Don’t say a word) covers.

MiM - You sang two interested songs from previous Xandria recordings, “Ravenheart” and “Now and Forever”. Why? Did you feel comfortable recording songs that were sung by another vocalist?
DvG - We wanted to lift these songs up, put them into the sound and level that Xandria has become ever since ‘Neverworld’s End’. For me it wasn’t hard finding my way in the songs during the recordings: we’ve been performing them live with me singing them for quite some time now so I already had the chance to make them my own.

MiM - I was assuming that you feel good with these songs because I saw the Xandria show at Leyendas del Rock festival and I was really impressed. Is the first time I see the band and I didn´t know you are so strong and sexy on the stage, and the band was so intense too. Tell me, how can you manage the strength of the music with the softness of your femininity?
DvG - Haha good question! Never thought about that so I guess it all comes natural and is just how I am.

MiM - Even when you are the main focus in the eye of the beholder, the band has a strong presence on the stage too. I remember seeing you on a corner of the stage and the guitars and bass players opposite of you, you watching them and them watching you. It was a beautiful moment. Do you rehearsal some choreographically moments or there are spontaneous?
DvG - Both! Some songs, like for example ‘Sacrificium’, ask for a bit thought through choreography. But for other songs thing like this just happen on stage. Sometimes they’re a onetime thing, other times we like to repeat this then on other shows too.

MiM - Your first concert with Xandria was in Spain too. Could you tell me your memories about this concert? Do you consider Xandria did a good concert at Leyendas? I saw you smiling all the time so I think you were happy or at least enjoying the moment.
DvG - I was! We had a very good turn up on the festival; lots of people came to see our show and joined us for the party, that of course always puts us into a good mood!
And yes, my first shows with Xandria were I Spain too! I really enjoyed them though I must say that I was so focused then that I was not always really able to enjoy the moment itself. But hey, that doesn’t mean that I didn’t love it!

MiM - You are from Holland and the band is from Germany. Are there big differences in terms of temper or customs between you and the boys? That usual male disorder, little discussions… Hahaha.
DvG - Haha no! I guess there are things that we’ve learned to get used too from each other when it comes to behavior and preferences, but ever since we met for the first time the vibe between us has been very good.

MiM - Do you remember those days when the band offers you the position of singer? How did it happen?
DvG - I was contacted by the manager of the band who offered me the position of becoming the new singer in Xandria. The band was at that time already busy with the production of the ‘Sacrificium’ album and their producer Joost van den Broek had told them that I might be a good fit.  And so I thought about it, traveled to Bielefeld to meet them and the rest is history. All in all the process was really relaxed.

MiM - When you came in the band, the songs from Sacrificium were already written? Do you get the opportunity to give some ideas, change some vocal parts or something?
DvG - Yes but only minor things since, of course, I had to step in really quickly. For ‘Fire and Ashes’ as well as the upcoming album my touch will be much more in the music.

MiM - Do you think to keep Ex Libris alive in a nearly future or it’s over? I see you are promoting hand written copies of Amygdala with different artwork so maybe it’s not over.
DvG - Correct. Ex Libris had to take a break after we had some line-up changes that needed to be made. But at the moment we are a piece of 5 again and rehearsing to be back on the level to hit the stage!

MiM - Are you aware that you are extremely beautiful and talented? After listening Sacrificium and Fire and Ashes, nobody can say that you are in the band only because you are so beautiful, for sure.
DvG - Haha well thank you for the compliment! Let’s say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder ;)

MiM - Do you feel more comfortable in the metal world that singing classical music? Were the teachers from ArtEZ happy with your determination when you decided to walk the way of Heavy Metal?
DvG - When I auditioned at the conservatorium to study classical music I was already singing in Ex Libris, even more so: the band motivated me to go into the classical direction. My teachers have always known and supported me.

MiM - The band will travel to China next December. Are you happy with that? What do you think are you going to expect?
DvG - Yes I’m very happy about that, one more for the scratch map! As for expecting: I like to go into an adventure like that with an open mind so that I can truly appreciate everything and not be disappointed with findings that do not match my expectations. A statement that I apply on almost anything in life by the way!

MiM - We will be waiting for the band again in Madrid, maybe in 2016. The band is really awesome and you are so special. Thank you for the interview. We wish you well.
