Entrevista Exclusiva

Uno de los retornos más esperados de Heavy Metal es el de Cirith Ungol. Una banda que juró que jamás volvería a tocar y se ha mantenido firme en esa decisión desde 1992 cuando decidieron dejarlo debido a la manipulación y el control de las discográficas.

Recientemente han anunciado su retorno para el festival Frost And Fire de Ventura (California), así que nos hemos puesto en contacto con Robert Garven, batería de la banda, para averiguar qué es lo que les ha hecho cambiar de opinión.

Hola Robert. Antes de nada decir que fue un gran placer conocerte en el "Frost And Fire" y muchas gracias por contestar estas preguntas.

El placer es mutuo. Ahora mismo estaba ocupado montando mi nueva batería. Es genial estar de vuelta.

¿Cómo empezó la llama a arder de nuevo después de tantos años? Todos sabemos más o menos por qué lo dejasteis pero puedes contarme algo más al respecto y por qué volver justo ahora?

Bueno, es una larga historia pero la culminación de todo fue Jarvis Leatherby de Night Demon que me llamó hace unos años y me dijo que tenían muchos fans en Europa que hablaban de Cirith Ungol y querían vernos tocar! Cuando Jarvis organizó el primer "Frost and Fire" en Ventura conocimos muchos nuevos amigos y gente que había viajado desde muy lejos para el festival que nos decían que teníamos que volver. Creo que yo fui el último en claudicar porque había jurado que no volvería a tocar la batería jamás pero Dusty (batería de Night Demon) me dejó sentarme detrás de su batería y me di cuenta de que la emoción de estar ahí no había desaparecido. En ese momento me sentí un completo idiota por abandonar cuando lo hicimos pero estábamos tan hartos de nuestra compañía discográfica en aquella época que entonces me pareció la decisión correcta.

¿Ahora que estáis de vuelta, tenéis planes de girar o grabar nuevo material?

De momento solo tenemos el concierto del "Frost and Fire" en Octubre. Será fantástico!! Después ya veremos lo que ocurre.

¿A qué os habéis dedicado todos estos años?

Personalmente he estado trabajando en la industria gráfica para conseguir uno de mis sueños: Tener un Ferrari! Al final después de trabajar duro conseguí comprarme uno así que ahora además de trabajar me dedico a cuidarlo y escuchar Heavy Metal en mi garage... En el coche!

¿Cómo están funcionando los ensayos? ¿Ha sido difícil retomarlo después de tanto tiempo?

La verdad que ha sido increíble juntarse y volver a tocar todas esas canciones de nuevo. Para ser honesto desde el primer momento sonamos sorprendentemente bien y la cosa va mejorando con cada ensayo.

Sabes que las expectativas son altísimas. ¿Crees que podréis satisfacer a vuestros fans?

No tengo ninguna duda de que los fans estarán satisfechos. Estamos tocando mucho mejor ahora de lo que recuerdo que tocábamos antes de separarnos. Se nota que somos más mayores y tenemos más experiencia. Vamos a patear unos cuantos culos. A mí fue al único que me costó volver a tocar como tocaba antes pero joder! Estando todos juntos rápidamente todo volvió a sonar como antes. Va a ser increíble!!!!

¿Habéis decidido ya el set list?

Sí!! Vamos a tocar todos nuestros mejores temas así que una vez más creo que los fans estarán satisfechos.

¿Habéis mantenido contacto entre vosotros durante todo este tiempo?

Esporádicamente ya que cada uno siguió si camino y hemos estado todos trabajando en nuestras cosas. Los que más cerca nos hemos mantenido todo este tiempo hemos sido Tim, Greg y yo.

Sé qué es difícil de decir, pero ¿por qué crees que vuestros discos no tuvieron el éxito que merecían en la época?

Bueno, para ser honesto no tuvimos el apoyo necesario para hacer giras y que los discos despegaran. Yo creo que nuestra música no encajaba con el Hair Metal y el Speed Metal de la época. Tuvimos ofertas con la condición de que cambiáramos nuestro estilo pero si de algo estoy orgulloso es de no haberlo hecho y habernos mantenido fieles al auténtico metal. Es gracioso que el mánager que hizo famosos a Guns & Roses quiso ser nuestro mánager con la condición de que nos vistiéramos de mujer y nos maquilláramos. ¡Le mandamos a la mierda!

¿Estás al día de la escena del metal actual?

Por supuesto! Mis amigos de Metal Blade no han dejado de mandarme demos de todas las bandas durante todos estos años y hay muchas y muy buenas por ahí. Me encantan Night Demon, Powerwolf, Falconer, Nightwish, Aska, Brainstorm, Autumn, etc!

¿Cuáles son tus discos favoritos?

¡Esa sí que es una pregunta difícil! Por decir algunos... Black Sabbath "Master of Reality", Thin Lizzy, (all of them), Dust "Hard Attack", Scorpions "In Trance", Montrose, "Montrose", Lucifers Friend, Captain Beyond... Pero son demasiados como para hacer una lista.

¿Cuáles son vuestras influencias para sonar tan distinto de cualquier otra banda?

Bueno, personalmente soy autodidacta y creo que eso influye en el sonido. Fui a clases durante algún tiempo pero solo sirvieron para confundirme así que lo dejé. Pienso que somos artistas pero tocamos como hombres de las cavernas. Yo al menos me siento un cavernícola detrás de la batería. Y también amamos el Heavy Metal. Nací en el año chino del “mono metálico” así que me encanta aporrear los timbales y el gong. Ya lo veréis en octubre!!

Muchas gracias por tu tiempo Robert. Estamos desando ver cómo funciona la banda en directo ¿Algo más que les quieras decir a los fans?

Muchas gracias a vosotros por seguir escuchándonos y manteniendo la fe en nosotros durante todos estos años. Os prometo que no os vamos a decepcionar si venís a vernos! Estamos deseando tocar en directo!!

English Version

How did the flame start burning again? After so many years... We all know more or less why you gave up. Could you tell me about it and why coming back now?

It is a long story but the culmination was when Jarvis Leatherby of Night Demon contacted me a few years back. They had been touring all over Europe and said that we had many fans out there who wanted to hear us play! When he put on the Frost & Fire festival we got to meet many new friends and fans that had traveled a long way and it hit home that we should get back together. I think I was the last hold out as I said I would never play again. Dusty the drummer for Night Demon let me sit in on his drums and all the emotion of so many years not playing flooded back. I feel like I was a complete idiot for quitting when I did but I was very disappointed at where we were going and our record company at the time.

Do you have further plans of making more shows or releasing a record?

That would be fantastic but all we have scheduled is this show in October, and it is going to be fantastic!

What have you been up to all these years?

I have been working in the graphics industry. One of my other dreams was to have a Ferrari so I saved up all my money and bought one. I have been working on it and taking care of it the last 20 years!  The whole time though I was playing heavy metal in the garage, in my car!

How are the rehearsals working? Was it hard to start playing again together after so many years?

It has been amazing getting back together and playing our songs has been very exciting and satisfying. To be honest we started playing very good and every practice has gotten better!

You know the really high expects, do you feel you will be able to satisfy the fans?

There is no doubt that we will satisfy the fans. We have been playing better than I remember when we broke up. We are all older and more experienced now and we are going to kick some serious ass.  It took me a few times to get back to playing the drums to my standards. But, fuck! we have a studio now and it is all coming together so fast. It will be incredible!

 Do you have decided the set list so far?

Yes we have and once again any fan of the band or our albums will not be disappointed, we are playing all the great songs!

Have you been in touch all over the years?

Yes, from time to time, but we all had been working and just trying to do our own thing. I probably kept in closest touch with Tim & Greg.

I know it’s hard to say but... why do you think you records didn’t have the success they deserved back in the day?

Well first off, we did not have the tour support we needed to get them off the ground and to be honest the material we were playing did not fit into the hair band or speed metal styles of the time. We had offers to change but I am proud we held fast to the essence of true metal. The manager that eventually made Guns & Roses famous wanted to be our manager if we wore womens clothes and makeup, but we told him to get lost....

Are you aware of the present metal scene?

Of Course, my friends at Metal Blade Records have been sending me demos over the years and I have stayed on top of things, some of the bands I really like are of course Night Demon, Powerwolf, Falconer, Nightwish, Aska, Brainstorm, Autumn, etc!

Which are your favorite albums of all time? (metal and non metal hehe)

That's hard but some of my favorites are Black Sabbath "Master of Reality", Thin Lizzy, (all of them), Dust "Hard Attack", Scorpion "In Trance", Montrose, "Montrose", Lucifers Friend, Captain Beyond, not sure I have enough room here.....

Which are your main influences and how did you manage to sound that different from anybody else?

Well I taught myself to play drum and I don’t play like most other drummers which I am proud of. At one point I took some lesson and I think it messed me up a while. I think of ourselves as artists but also like a primitive cavemen! I also love metal. I was born in the Chinese year of the "Metal Monkey" I love my gongs and cymbals and playing on and am endorsing Paiste cymbals the best cymbals and gongs on earth! I am most proud of how I work the cymbals. You will see in October!!!!

Anything you would like to tell the fans?

Thank you for listening to us over all the years and having faith in us, and the true metal. I promise we will not let you down if you come see us!  I know you will be there and I can’t wait!
