Stu “The Hammer” Marshall, guitarrista y productor de la banda de Heavy Metal Arkenstone, (también en Death Dealer, cuyos vínculos van más allá como conocerás en la entrevista) habla con Raúl Cardona de Made in Metal, sobre la banda, su historia y el futuro.

MiM: Me gustaría que me contaras un poco sobre la formación de la banda, su desarrollo dentro de la escena en todos estos años.

R: Sí, la banda comenzó durante la pandemia de Covid. Había recopilado mucho material mientras escribía para Death Dealer y tenía una gran relación con el cantante Louie, con quien había trabajado en mi banda anterior, Empires of Eden. La banda también se formó con mi amigo Mike Lepond en el bajo y también mi buen amigo en la batería Clay T.

MiM: Heavy Metal y Power Metal parecen estar pasando por una muy buena etapa en cuanto a calidad y cantidad de bandas y lanzamientos. ¿A qué crees que se debe esto? ¿Qué bandas estás escuchando últimamente?

R: Es una de las mejores cosas de la producción moderna. Productores como Tue Madsen, Andy Sneap y tipos así están creando algunos tonos de producción muy inspiradores. Estas son grandes referencias para que intentemos y a las que aspiramos. Pero en cuanto a las bandas que escucho, todavía escucho demasiado a la vieja guardia como Helloween, Iron Maiden y Judas Priest.

MiM: El EP “Ascension of the Fallen” (2021) tiene un sonido épico, a veces muy parecido al Power Metal y a veces al Heavy Metal. ¿Cómo defines el sonido de la banda?

R: Siempre es difícil cuando estás escribiendo material nuevo, pero quería intentar hacer algo que tuviera una sensación fresca y que aún hablara de las voces del pasado. También estoy fuertemente influenciado por el doom metal, así que esto era algo que quería intentar y hacer era fusionar algunas de las influencias del doom metal con una sensación de power metal más rápida y poderosa.

MiM: ¿En qué estudio de grabación tuvo lugar? ¿Quién fue su productor? ¿Dónde se grabó la orquestación de las canciones?

R: Todas las grabaciones se realizaron en todo el mundo, por lo que el bajo se grabó en Estados Unidos, la batería y la guitarra se grabaron en Sydney y las voces se grabaron en Melbourne. Produje este EP y he estado produciendo durante los últimos quince años. Toda la orquestación se manejó aquí en Sydney en mi estudio.

MiM: Este EP tiene a Ross the Boss como invitado. ¿Cómo surgió la idea? ¿Cómo fue trabajar con este gran músico?

R: Para mí siempre es maravilloso trabajar con Ross. Ross también es el otro guitarrista conmigo en Death Dealer, así que le pedí este favor especial para ser parte de la pista, ya que estaba muy influenciada por Manowar. Ross es uno de los últimos verdaderos grandes Rockstars, uno de los grandes guitarristas de nuestro tiempo.

MiM: Arkenstone cuenta con músicos de renombre como tú y Michael LePond en su alineación. ¿Cuéntame sobre eso?

R: Sí, nuevamente pude trabajar con Mike ya que él es el bajista de Death Dealer y hemos forjado una buena amistad cercana. Mike es un bajista increíble que realmente eleva la pista. MiM: ¿Cómo has vivido el confinamiento y la pandemia hasta ahora?

R: Para Australia, parece que tenemos algunas de las restricciones más estrictas a nivel mundial. Yo aproveché el tiempo para escribir la mayor cantidad de material posible, así que comoo no podíamos tocar en vivo, fui al estudio y comencé a escribir, lo que ha sido un momento fantástico para hacer esto.

MiM: ¿Cómo fue el fichaje de la banda por Steel Cartel Records? ¿Qué ventajas ofrece a la banda pertenecer al sello y cómo es la relación con ellos?

R: Es una gran relación con Steel Cartel, ellos están directamente relacionados con nosotros y saben qué necesita la banda y cómo se debe promocionar, por lo que tenemos una gran relación allí.

MiM: ¿Conciertos o giras en los próximos meses?

 "I wanted to make something that had a fresh feel and still spoke to the voices of the past"

Stu “The Hammer” Marshall, guitar player and producer in the Heavy Metal band Arkenstone, (also in Death Dealer, whose links are stronger as you could read in this interview) talks to Raúl Cardona from Made in Metal, about the band, its history, and the future.

MiM:  I would like you to tell me a little about the formation of the band, its development within the scene in all these years?

A: Yes, the band started during the Covid pandemic. I had collected a lot of material during the writing for the band Death Dealer and had a great relationship with the singer Louie who I had worked with in my previous act Empires of Eden. The band was also formed with my friend Mike Lepond on bass and also my good friend on drums Clay T.

MiM: Heavy Metal and Power Metal seem to be going through a very good stage in terms of the quality and quantity of bands and releases. What do you think this is due to? What bands are you listening to lately?

A: It’s one of the great things about modern-day production. Producers like Tue Madson, Andy Sneap, and guys like that are creating some very inspirational production tones. These are great references for us to try and aspire to. But as far as bands that I’m listening to for me I’m still listening to too much of the old guard like Helloween, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest.

MiM: The EP Ascension of the Fallen (2021) has an epic sound, sometimes very similar to Power Metal and sometimes Heavy Metal. How do you define the sound of the band?

A: It’s always difficult when you’re writing new material, but I wanted to try and make something that had a fresh feel to it and still spoke to the voices of the past. I’m heavily influenced by doom metal as well, so this was something I wanted to try and do was to fuse some of the doom metal influences with a faster and more powerful power metal feel.

MiM: In which recording studio did it take place? Who was its producer? Where the orchestration of the songs were recorded?

A: All of the recordings occurred across the world so the bass was recorded in America, drums and guitar were recorded in Sydney, and vocals were recorded down in Melbourne. I produced this EP and have been producing it for the last fifteen years. The orchestration was all handled here in Sydney at my studio.

MiM: Excellent orchestral arrangements. How did the idea come about?

A: Well, I compose the orchestral works that you hear on the EP. It’s something I really love doing and I’ve been doing it now for about 20 years. I’m a big fan of film scores and how sometimes the epic nature of a great film score can elevate a film.

MiM: This EP has Ross the Boss as a guest. How did the idea come about? How was it working with this great musician?

A: For me, it’s always wonderful to work with Ross. Ross is also the other guitar player with me in Death Dealer so I asked him this special favor to be a part of the track as it was very heavily influenced by Manowar. Ross is one of the last true great Rockstars, one of the great guitar players of our time.

MiM: Louie Gorgievski sounds amazingly well. Great vocal range. How was the process of recording the voices?

A: Louie is a true professional. A real perfectionist when it comes to what he wants to lay down vocally and the tracks that I get out are very clean and meticulous. Louie has a lot of power in his voice but knows how to use it sparingly so it’s really about getting the emotion of the vocal across in the first instance. He has a great home recording set up with some high-quality microphones so this made my life very easy.

MiM: Arkenstone features renowned musicians such as Stu Marshall and Michael LePond in its lineup. Tell me about it?

A: Yes, again I was able to work with Mike as he is the bass player in Death Dealer and we have forged a good close friend. Mike is an incredible bass player that really elevates the track. So sometimes when you write a song, you have a vision of how it can end up in the end, but A: Mike makes it so good and changes the feel in such a musical way it’s almost like I’m hearing the track for the first time again.

MiM: Is Arkenstone a consolidated band within the international heavy metal scene or just an ephemeral project?

A: I think to be fair it’s more of a project than it is a band but we have such a great time it has very much a band vibe to it. There’s no reason why we couldn’t tour on this band and EP.

MiM: Excellent album design. Who was in charge?

A: The incredible Marc Sasso from New York did the album cover for this one we couldn’t be happier. He has done covers for Dio and Halford so I think the piece really represents what the music sounds like inside the EP.

MiM: Being a relatively new band, your music is coming out at the height of streaming platforms, platforms that are more oriented towards promoting singles than albums. How do you see it?

A: I think it’s a great way for people to hear new music and connect with new music. If the music is strong enough people will go and buy the T-shirts and see the band live so it's only a good thing.

MiM: How have you experienced confinement and the pandemic so far?

A: Yes, for Australia, we appear to have some of the toughest restrictions globally. For me, I used the time to write as much material as possible, so where we couldn’t play live, I hit the studio and started to write which has been a fantastic time to do this.

MiM: How was the signing of the band by Steel Cartel Records? What advantages does belonging to the label offer the band and what is the relationship with them?

A: It’s a great relationship with Steel Cartel, they are directly linked to knowing what the band needs and how it’s to be promoted so we have a great relationship there.

MiM: Concerts or tours in the coming months?

A: Like everyone else, we are looking at the pandemic and how it’s affecting global touring. Right now, it’s very uncertain about the future but there’s no reason why we can’t get together and play some shows. I hope to have some better news for you towards the end of the year.
