Las leyendas del Power Metal Virgin Steele lanzarán su nuevo álbum 'The Passion Of Dionysus' el 30 de junio bajo el prestigioso sello discográfico Steamhammer/SPV. Excelente oportunidad para Made in Metal de conversar con David DeFeis, multi-instrumentista, productor y vocalista de la banda.

En cuanto a la segunda parte de su reflexiva pregunta, creo que se trata de estar interesado en la vida, estar interesado en aprender cosas nuevas y estar seriamente interesado en todo lo que es la música, lo que hace, adónde va y lo que hace. da. MiM: David, ¿cómo fueron esos inicios de Virgin Steele? ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de aquellos tiempos?
VS: El comienzo fue un momento muy emocionante. Todo en mi mundo parecía increíblemente nuevo, fresco y emocionante. Recuerdo la sensación de energía... energía primaria. Se agotó rápidamente, así que prensamos otras 5.000 copias, y antes de que se agotara la impresión teníamos dos contratos discográficos, uno en los EE. MiM: ¿Cómo te sientes después de ocho años sin publicar material nuevo de la banda? ¿Cómo fue la reunión en el estudio?
VS: En realidad, no han pasado ocho años desde la última vez que lanzamos música nueva. Te refieres al álbum "Nocturnes of Hellfire & Damnation". De hecho, eso fue hace ocho años. MiM: Este año marca el 40 aniversario del lanzamiento del álbum "Guardians of the Flame" (1983) y el 30 aniversario del lanzamiento de "Life Among the Ruins" (1993). ¿Alguna remasterización de lujo o edición de lujo para celebrar?
VS: ¡Eso espero! Planeamos reeditar "Guardians of the Flame" y esperamos que aparezca este año junto con el primer álbum. "Life Among the Ruins", ya veremos. VS: Voy a agregar esto... aquí hay algo que escribí para la sinopsis que aparece en el folleto:
La ambigüedad de Dios es la clave de su naturaleza. Cuando tiene la forma de “El Extranjero”, dice: “Dionisio es un Dios en esencia perfecta; uno terrible pero a la humanidad más suave”. En esta obra, Dionisio está tanto dentro como fuera o sobre todo la acción que se desarrolla. Es divino y humano, físicamente hermoso e intensamente temible e intimidante. Habita en la cúspide de los imperios/civilizaciones, ya que sus orígenes son tanto griegos como asiáticos. Sus diversos nombres de culto dan una idea de su relación con la humanidad. A veces se le llama Bromios, "El que ruge", y Lysios, "El Dios de dejar ir". Dionisio trae el don del vino, que con moderación permite a los mortales dejarse llevar…dejar de lado sus problemas, sus preocupaciones…relajarse y renovarse. MiM: David, en este disco se nota mucho lo bien que eres como vocalista, demuestras que estás en excelentes condiciones. ¿Cómo logras mantener esa fuerza en tu voz a pesar de los años?
VS: Te agradezco nuevamente por toda tu amabilidad. Realmente aprecio todas sus palabras reflexivas. Trato de mantener mi salud en orden. Además, mantengo mi mente, cuerpo y espíritu, y vocalizo, y trato de incorporar diferentes ejercicios para mantener lo que me dieron. No siempre es fácil, ya que canto violentamente, pero hasta ahora las cosas han funcionado. En este álbum, me acerqué a cada canción como si fuera lo último que cantaría. Quiero decir que siempre me acerco a cada canción de cada álbum de esa manera, pero el tema y la letra de este álbum exigieron una imprudencia, violencia y valentía aún mayores, por lo que abordé todo desde el punto de vista de crear una belleza violenta. Creo que este es uno de los álbumes más violentos que hemos hecho en términos de letras, actitud y actuaciones de todos. Es una liberación bastante enojada.
MiM: ¿Cómo se da el proceso creativo en la banda a la hora de componer, estructurar y decidir qué canciones o composiciones formarán parte de un disco? ¿Es un proceso colaborativo entre todos, o recae en una o dos personas?
VS: Hago todo eso. Compongo y arreglo todo, y luego les enseño las canciones a los otros muchachos, y comenzamos a grabar. Disfruto escribir canciones con otras personas, especialmente con Edward y Josh, siempre que sea posible, pero eso no sucede tan a menudo en estos días. Del mismo modo, escribo constantemente, por lo que siempre hay una gran cantidad de material para elegir. Tanto es así que el grupo se ha acostumbrado a que yo haga la mayor parte de la composición y disfrutan tocando lo que he escrito.

MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar estos álbumes? ¿Conciertos o giras programadas este año?
VS: Tenemos un segundo lyric video que aparecerá esta semana, y un tercero llegará a fin de mes, y habrá algunos más después de eso. Además, comenzaremos a hacer conciertos nuevamente, y espero editar una especie de "película"/documental como lo que describí anteriormente, para este álbum.

Power Metal Legends Virgin Steele will release their new album 'The Passion Of Dionysus' on June 30th under the prestigious Steamhammer/SPV record label. Excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to talk with David DeFeis, multi-instrumentalist, producer and vocalist of the band.
MiM: David, it's already more than forty years of career keeping the right track with Virgin Steele, despite seeing how cultural innovation is left aside to make way for commercial music. What keeps you standing? What has it been like to stand firm and not succumb to these more commercial trends sooner? How do you manage to evolve all the time?
VS: To answer the first part of your question, I shall say this… we have taken the stance of a mighty tree in the middle of a hurricane... Our roots are deep, and we decided very early on to only do what we want to do, to only make music that we firmly believe in. We have never been in it for fame, for fame’s sake, or clicks or likes, or being the flavor of the month. We are only interested in creating music we believe in and albums we want to listen to. As regards the second part of your thoughtful question, I believe that it comes down to being interested in life, being interested in learning new things, and being seriously interested in all that music is, what it does, where it goes, and what it gives. It has given me everything. I am still very excited to write songs...to manipulate emotions, conjure sounds, and craft something that sculpts in sound what life is like...what my life is like at any given moment. I have things…ideas, thoughts, and emotions that I wish to express, to share...and doing it musically is the best vehicle for me.
MiM: David, how were those beginnings of Virgin Steele? What memories do you have of those times?
VS: The beginning was a very exciting time. Everything in my world seemed incredibly new, fresh, and exciting. I remember the feeling of energy...primal energy. We wanted to show the rock scene in our area what we could do, and it quickly spread to Europe, and before we knew it...we had several albums out. It all happened so quickly. I remember the first rehearsals and going into the studio after being together for 3 weeks. We made the first album in less than a week, and began sending cassettes of it around the world...planting seeds as it were...and interest began, so we pressed up 5,000 copies of the album... It sold out quickly, so we pressed up another 5,000 copies, and before that pressing sold out we had two record deals, one in the USA with Mongol Horde, and one in the UK with Music For Nations. We were actually their very first release. MFN 1!!! After us, they signed Metallica, WASP, Manowar, etc.... I remember some great gigs and all the beautiful madness that those days brought.... and it is still going on!
MiM: How do you feel after eight years without releasing new material from the band? How was the meeting in the studio?
VS: It actually has not been eight years since we last released new music. You are referring to the "Nocturnes of Hellfire & Damnation" album. That indeed was eight years ago… However, almost five years ago, inside the five CD "Seven Devils Moonshine" box set, we actually released three brand-new albums along with the two re-issues found in there. Yes, you read that correctly, three brand-new albums in the year 2018, but… the facts about those releases have not been realized by everyone. When we did the "Seven Devils Moonshine" box set, people assumed that because we had included the two re-issues: "The Book of Burning" and "Hymn to Victory", everything else on all the other albums included was all old material, when in truth, we had specifically recorded & included, once again I will say it, three new albums of brand-new material. The three albums that I am referring to are "Ghost Harvest (Vintage 1 Black Wine For Mourning)," "Ghost Harvest (Vintage 2 Red Wine For Warning)", and "Gothic Voodoo Anthems." I wrote brand-new material for those albums, plus we also recorded several covers that I re-wrote and re-arranged. Those Works were all newly crafted for inclusion in that box set…but this was generally not understood at the time, which was quite unfortunate.
We did those three new albums, and after that, we made several “movies”/documentaries. One movie was based on the full massive five CD "Seven Devils Moonshine" Box Set in its entirety, one movie focused on the "Gothic Voodoo Anthems" album, and one movie was based on the "Vision of Eden" album. In addition to all of that, we also issued several song video clips. I believe around eleven of them thus far from those new works. And last but not least, I was writing what became the "Passion of Dionysus" album, as well as what will be the follow-up to that album, and the follow-up beyond that. So, as you can see, we were not idle.
Getting to the second part of your question. Meeting again to record the “Dionysus” album was very positive, and exciting, as it always is whenever we all get together. I truly enjoy working with Edward & Josh, and the chemistry is still strong, and the energy is high whenever we gather. So it was a beautiful experience.
MiM: "The Passion Of Dionysus" (Steamhammer/SPV, 2023) is undoubtedly a masterpiece. Excellent voice work and excellent production work. Clean sound, but Epic, overwhelming and capable of transporting you to a great story. How was the recording and production process? What recording studio did it take place in?
VS: Hey, thanks so very, very much for all your kindness and enthusiasm. I am very happy to hear that you are enjoying the new album! The album was recorded in my studio, where we have been working for the last several albums. The recording went smoothly. We always start with a kind of “sketch” with just the piano and a guide vocal...and then we build from there. What takes the longest for me is the mixing, as I always want it to sound like I hear it in my head, and that rarely happens, but on this album, I got closer to that ideal. Anyway, again, I am very glad to learn that you are enjoying the new album. Cheers!
MiM: David, I know that Virgin Steele means a lot to you. Like a way of life. Is it so? What could you tell me about it?
VS: Yes, it does mean a lot to me...it really is a way of life for me...it is my life. Everything I do, everything I am, is wrapped up in the music, and Virgin Steele has been my passion, my reason of being for a long time now. It is not a “career” in the conventional sense, it truly is a vocation, a calling, a Spiritual quest, and I heed that call and shall do so eternally.
MiM: This year marks the 40th anniversary of the release of the "Guardians of the Flame" album (1983) and the 30th anniversary of the release of "Life Among the Ruins" (1993). Any deluxe remaster or deluxe edition to celebrate?
VS: I hope so! We do plan on re-issuing "Guardians of the Flame" and hopefully it will appear this year along with the first album. "Life Among the Ruins", shall see. It was re-issued several years back, and I did add a second CD with all kinds of new music, so I am not sure at the moment what I could add, but one can keep an open mind.
MiM: Listening to the album, I feel a connection between all the songs. "The Passion Of Dionysus" is a concept album.
VS: Yes it is. What Dionysus embodies and what our tale here concerns, is an epic struggle to the death between the twin forces of control/restraint and freedom/release, and whether there is room in society for the irrational, the wild, the “letting go” aspects of ourselves. Ultimately it concludes that a space or a place for the irrational must be allowed in order for society to exist, function properly, and continue to thrive. When one opposes or denies a place for the irrational as King Pentheus does in our tale, then the person, place, thing, or society will be ripped apart…exactly like what comes to be the ultimate fate of Pentheus. Science has shown us that even rats need to escape from absolute reality!
MiM: “The Passion of Dionysus” album depicts an epic struggle, between the twin forces of control/restraint and freedom/release. In addition, it depicts the passion or suffering of the God…his struggles, his great betrayal at the hands of those he trusted…his rage, his frustration, his death, & his resurrection, and on another level, this work also portrays and expresses what the God dearly loves…or is most “passionate” about. That being said, embedded within this offering lurks another duality…something else is also simultaneously going on…
VS: I will add this…here is something I wrote for the synopsis that appears in the booklet:
The God’s ambiguity is the key to his nature. When he is in the form of “The Stranger” he says, “Dionysus is a God in perfect essence; a terrible one but to humankind most gentle”. In this work, Dionysus is both inside and outside or above all the action that takes place. He is divine and human, physically beautiful and intensely fearsome and intimidating. He dwells at the cusp of empires/civilizations, as his origins are both Greek and Asiatic. His various cult names do give a bit of insight as regards his relationship with humanity. He is sometimes called Bromios-“The Roaring One”, and Lysios-“The God Of Letting Go”. Dionysus brings the gift of wine, which in moderation allows mortals to let go…leave off their troubles, their worries…relax, and renew. With his festivals, Theatrical spectacles…and the various celebrations of his rites, humans can let go of their individuality and find a communal sacred “oneness”, ultimately realizing that they too can become the God… God lives in all his followers and what Dionysus can do his followers can do…ultimately live better and triumph over death…resurrect. But yes on the flip side…there is a potential dark aspect…for with a loss of self-control and gratuitous excess…(one sip too much)… the festivities can become destructive…murderous…where “The Roaring One” overpowers…judgment is not only impaired, but suspended…insanity triumphs, possession or “madness” ensues, and mere mortals cast off, or “let go” the very essence of their humanity.
MiM: David, on this album it is very noticeable how well you are as a vocalist, you show that you are in excellent condition. How do you manage to maintain that strength in your voice despite the years?
VS: I thank you again for all your kindness. I really appreciate all your thoughtful words. I do try to keep my health in order. Furthermore, I maintain my mind, body & spirit, and I do vocalize, and try to incorporate different exercises to maintain what I was given. It isn’t always easy, as I do sing violently, but thus far things have been working. On this album, I did approach each song as if it would be the last thing I ever sang. I mean I always do approach every song on every album like that. Still, the subject and the lyrics on this album demanded an even greater recklessness, violence and fearlessness, so I approached everything from the standpoint of creating violent beauty. I think this is one of the most violent albums we have ever done in terms of the lyrics, the attitude, and the performances from all. It is quite an angry release.
MiM: How does the creative process take place in the band when it comes to composing, structuring, and deciding which songs or compositions will be part of an album? Is it a collaborative process between everyone, or does it fall on one or two people?
VS: I do all of that. I compose and arrange everything, and then I teach the other guys the songs, and we begin recording. I do enjoy writing songs with other people, especially Edward & Josh, whenever possible, but that does not happen all that often these days. Likewise, I write constantly, so there is always a huge stockpile of material to choose from. So much so that the group has gotten used to me doing the bulk of the composing, and they enjoy playing what I have written.
MiM: You are a band with several years of training with records and many concerts in their career. Looking back, how would you rate the work of the band all these years?
VS: I think we have done some excellent work. Each of the albums has its own magic, charm....and unique perspective on where the group was at when we made them. I enjoy each of them.
MiM: What plans do you have to promote these albums? Are concerts or tours scheduled this year?
VS: We have a second lyric video appearing this week, and a third will arrive at the end of the month, and there will be a few more after that. In addition, we will start doing concerts again, and I do hope to edit a kind of “movie”/documentary-like what I described above, for this album.
MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers.
