La banda alemana de Heavy/Power Metal Rebellion lanzó el 19 de mayo su disco 'X - Live in Iberia', el cual pertenece a un concierto que la banda ofreció en mayo del año pasado en el famoso Paberse Club de Valencia, España. Este concierto fue lanzado a través de Massacre Records. Excelente oportunidad para conversar con el guitarrista Fabrizio Costantino para conocer todo sobre este disco.

MiM - "Live in Iberia" (Massacre Records, 2023) es un disco en directo con un sonido sólido donde la banda y el público se entrelazan de forma mágica. ¿Cómo surgió la idea de lanzar este live?

Fabrizio: Algún día empezamos a grabar cada programa que tocábamos, para poder escucharlo y mejorar ciertas canciones y demás. Recuerdo cuando Martin y yo compartimos una habitación de hotel después de un muy buen espectáculo, y solo queríamos verificar rápidamente si los datos grabados estaban dañados o algo así. Eventualmente, volvimos a escuchar todo el programa, acostados en esa oscura habitación de hotel, tomados de la mano. Solo bromeo, pero realmente creo que fue entonces cuando pensamos por primera vez que un álbum en vivo podría ser una buena idea.

MiM: ¿Por qué exactamente en España?

Fabrizio: La gira de Iberia fue muy especial para nosotros. No era nuestra primera gira internacional desde que cambió la alineación, pero después de un gran comienzo en Portugal (¡con vino y queso!), al menos para mí, sentí que los fanáticos estaban tan hambrientos de nuestra música, amantes de la diversión, y, sin embargo, muy atento con respecto a todas las cosas de COVID que todavía estaban sucediendo. Nuestro último show en España fue en el legendario Paberse Club, y cuando nuestro tour manager nos dijo que seríamos uno de los últimos artistas en tocar allí, decidimos que viviría para siempre en nuestro disco y también que la banda hizo la menor cantidad. errores en ese programa.

MiM: ¿Quién fue el productor discográfico?

Fabrizio: ¡Mezclado y masterizado por nuestro único dios de la guitarra solista, Martin Giemza!

MiM: ¿Cómo recuerdas ese concierto en mayo de 2022? ¿Cómo fue la experiencia? ¿Cuál es el criterio de la banda con respecto al público español?

Fabrizio: Ese espectáculo comenzó en la prueba de sonido, para ser honesto. Teníamos un poco de resaca, pero cuando dimos las primeras notas, esas tres personas que dirigían el club ya se estaban poniendo fuertes. Eso realmente preparó el ambiente para el resto del día y especialmente para el espectáculo. Cuando comenzó el verdadero espectáculo, se desató el infierno y la gente cantó con nosotros, bebió con nosotros y compartió toda esta loca alegría con nosotros. Sólo recordarlo me hace feliz. Después del espectáculo, hablamos con mucha gente y nos enteramos de que tenían que trabajar al día siguiente, se acababan de recuperar de COVID o manejaban cientos de millas para vernos, así que realmente aprecio a todas las personas geniales en España que fue a nuestros espectáculos.

MiM: ¿Cuáles son las principales influencias, musicalmente hablando, de la banda a la hora de componer nuevo material?

Fabrizio: Para el último álbum, "We Are the People", la principal influencia fue, bueno, Rebellion. Sé que suena estúpido, pero Martin y yo éramos relativamente nuevos en la banda. Teníamos ocho álbumes del viejo Rebellion y queríamos hacer un nuevo álbum de Rebellion. Por supuesto, nuestra propia socialización musical se abre paso aquí y allá. Diría que en mi caso es una mezcla de Black y Death Metal, Martin creció en Hard Rock y Blues Rock, así que sí. Sin embargo, Tomi sigue diciéndonos que escuchemos a Thin Lizzy para tener la “sensación correcta” de la música.

MiM: En la canción "God Of Thunder" siento una marcada influencia de bandas como Manowar. ¿Es tan? ¿Cuál es tu opinión acerca de esto?

Fabrizio: Jaja, sí, hay un riff que suena como Manowar. Bueno, como saben, God of Thunder es de la época dorada de la Rebelión de Uwe Lulis, y cuando lo estudié para, ya saben, tocarlo correctamente, me di cuenta de que su estilo de composición es muy denso o apretado. Sus riffs a menudo se convierten en algo que los completa musicalmente. ¡Y luego llega el coro! Siento que eso también sucede en God of Thunder que, en comparación con esa canción de Manowar, creo que es una idea musical diferente.

MiM: Michael Seifert tiene una de las voces más interesantes del panorama heavy metal internacional. Una etiqueta que hace única a la banda. ¿Cómo te mantienes en forma después de todos estos años? ¿Tienes una formación académica o es empírica?

Fabrizio: Le hice exactamente la misma pregunta a Micha cuando estábamos de gira por España :D. Desafortunadamente, no recuerdo mucho de esa noche (¿dije que la pasamos muy bien de gira?) Creo que me dijo que no tenía antecedentes académicos. Solo quería sonar de cierta manera y lo aprendió por su cuenta. ¡Muy talentoso!

MiM: Al escuchar el álbum, se nota que realmente disfrutaron ese concierto. ¿Cuándo podremos volver a verlos en España?

Fabrizio: ¡Realmente lo disfrutamos también! Este año estaremos de gira por el sureste de Europa a través de Croacia y Eslovenia, pero si quieres volver a vernos quizás en 2024, llámanos. ¡Nos encantaría volver!

MiM: ¿Cuándo podrán los fans disfrutar del nuevo material de la banda? ¿Algún álbum nuevo en producción?

Fabricio: ¡Sí! Actualmente estamos trabajando en cosas nuevas. De hecho, incluso se escribió una canción en España. Una de las cosas que realmente me gusta de Rebellion es que todo el mundo está bastante motivado para sacar música nueva. Es bueno que tengamos un álbum en vivo realmente bueno para emocionarte mientras esperas el álbum 11th Rebellion.

MiM: Creo que una banda como Sabaton le debe mucho en su forma de concebir la música al trabajo de Rebellion a lo largo de los años. ¿Cómo lo ves?

Fabricio: Bueno, gracias! Quiero decir, Sabaton tiene una verdadera pasión por los temas históricos. Tiendo a pensar que representan la otra cara de la medalla de cómo percibimos la historia. La mayoría de sus canciones están construidas como himnos, y tienen un propósito. Históricamente, los himnos se usaban para alabar a los dioses, luego a los reyes, a las naciones o al verano del 69, pero de cualquier manera, brindan un atajo emocional entre los humanos y los conceptos que son muy difíciles de entender en unos tres minutos. Y no estoy juzgando aquí. Creo que en estos días es bueno que las personas tengan la oportunidad de experimentar este atajo: experimentar con qué facilidad la música puede cimentar nuestras emociones con respecto a ciertos eventos. Sin embargo, cuanto más sepa o lea sobre historia, más ambiguo y aterrador puede ser este tema. Y luego, puede ser un poco más difícil escuchar una canción que suena heroica sobre la Primera Guerra Mundial. La estética puede parecer apagada. En ese momento, puedes volver a escuchar Rebellion. Te recomiendo que cada vez que estés escuchando Fields of Verdun de Sabaton también escuches Verdun de Rebellion :D. ¡Incluso hay una versión en vivo en nuestro nuevo álbum!

MiM: Sois una banda con más de veinte años de formación y muchos discos y conciertos en su carrera. Mirando hacia atrás, ¿cómo calificarías el trabajo de la banda todos estos años?

Fabrizio: No puedo calificar nada aquí. Hace 20 años, traté de impresionar a mis amigos con un kickflip sólido. Una vez, un locutor de radio nos presentó diciendo que si escuchas todos los álbumes de Rebellion, eres apto para la clase de historia. Desafortunadamente, todavía no nos han regalado una espada.

MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum? ¿Hay conciertos o giras programadas para este nuevo año?

Fabrizio: Este verano, haremos una pequeña pausa para centrarnos en la familia y la composición. Comenzaremos a tocar en shows a fines de septiembre. The German Heavy/Power Metal band Rebellion released on May 19 their album "X - Live in Iberia", which belongs to a concert that the band offered in May of last year at the famous Paberse Club in Valencia, Spain. This concert was released through the prestigious Massacre Records record label. Excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to talk with the guitarist, Fabrizio Costantino to find out everything about this album.

MiM: "Live in Iberia" (Massacre Records, 2023) is a live album with a solid sound where the band and the public intertwine in a magical way. How did the idea of ​​launching this live come up?

Fabrizio: We someday started to record every show we played, so we could listen back to it and improve on certain songs and such. I remember when Martin and I shared a hotel room after a really good show, and we just wanted to quickly check if the recorded data was damaged or something. Eventually, we listened to the whole show again, just lying in that dark hotel room, holding hands. I'm just joking, but I really think that’s when we first thought that a live album might be a good idea.

MiM: Why exactly in Spain?

Fabrizio: The Iberia tour was very special to us. It wasn’t our first international tour since the lineup had changed, but after a great start in Portugal (with wine and cheese!), at least to me, it felt like the fans were so hungry for our music, fun-loving, and yet very caring in regard to all the COVID stuff that was still going on. Our final show in Spain was at the legendary Paberse Club, and when our tour manager told us that we would be one of the last acts to play there, we decided that it would live forever on our record and also that the band made the fewest mistakes on that show.

MiM: Who was the record producer?

Fabrizio: Mixed and mastered by our one and only lead guitar god, Martin Giemza!

MiM: How do you remember that concert in May 2022? How was the experience? What are the band's criteria regarding the Spanish public?

Fabrizio: That show started at sound check, to be honest. We were a little hungover, but when we hit the first notes, those three people who ran the club were already going hard. That really set the mood for the rest of the day and especially for the show. When the real show started, all hell broke loose, and people sang with us, drank with us, and shared all of this crazy joy with us. Just reminiscing about it makes me happy. After the show, we talked to a lot of people and learned that they had to work the next day, just recovered from COVID, or drove hundreds of miles to see us, so I really just have an appreciation for all the great people in Spain that went to our shows.

MiM: What are the main influences, musically speaking, of the band when it comes to composing new material?

Fabrizio: For the last album, "We Are the People," the main influence was, well, Rebellion. I know that sounds stupid, but Martin and I were relatively new to the band. We had eight albums of old Rebellion, and we wanted to make a new Rebellion album. Of course, our own musical socialization pushes through here and there. I would say in my case, it is a mix of Black and Death Metal, Martin grew up on Hard Rock and Blues Rock, so yeah. Tomi keeps telling us to listen to Thin Lizzy, though, to get the “right feeling” for music.

MiM: In the song "God Of Thunder" I feel a marked influence from bands like Manowar. Is it so? What is your opinion about it?

Fabrizio: Haha yeah, there is this one riff that sounds like Manowar. Well, as you know, God of Thunder is from the golden age of Uwe Lulis’ Rebellion, and when I studied it to, you know, play it properly, I realized that his style of composition is very dense or tight. His riffs often develop into something that kind of completes them musically. And then the chorus hits! I feel that also happens in God of Thunder which, in comparison to that Manowar song, is a different musical idea, I think.

MiM: Michael Seifert has one of the most interesting voices on the international heavy metal scene. A label that makes the band unique. How do you keep fit after all these years? Do you have an academic background, or is it empirical?

Fabrizio: I asked Micha the same exact question when we were touring Spain :D. Unfortunately, I don’t remember much of that night (did I say we had a great time touring?) I think he told me he had no academic background. He just wanted to sound a certain way and learned it on his own. Very talented!

MiM: Listening to the album, you can tell that they really enjoyed that concert. When can we see them again in Spain?

Fabrizio: We really did enjoy it, too! This year we will be touring southeast Europe through Croatia and Slovenia, but if you want to see us again in maybe 2024, just give us a call. We would love to come again!

MiM: When will fans be able to enjoy new material from the band? Are any new albums in production?

Fabrizio: Yes! We are currently working on new stuff. Actually, one song was even written in Spain. One of the things I really like about Rebellion is that everyone is pretty motivated to put out new music. It's a good thing that we have a really nice live album to hype yourself up with while waiting for the 11th Rebellion album.

MiM: I think that a band like Sabaton owes a lot in its way of conceiving music to the work of Rebellion over the years. How do you see it?

Fabrizio: Well, thanks! I mean, Sabaton does have a real passion for historical topics. I tend to think that they represent the other side of the medal of how we perceive history. Most of their songs are built like hymns, and those do serve a purpose. Historically, hymns were used to praise the gods, later to praise kings, nations, or the summer of 69, but either way, they provide an emotional shortcut between humans and concepts that are very hard to understand in about three minutes. And I’m not judging here. I think these days, it is a good thing that people have a chance to experience this shortcut—to experience how easily music can cement our emotions concerning certain events. However, the more you know or read about history, the more ambiguous and terrifying this subject can be. And then, it might be a little harder to listen to a heroic-sounding song about the First World War. The aesthetics may just seem off. At that stage, you can listen to Rebellion again. I recommend that every time you’re listening to Fields of Verdun by Sabaton also listen to Verdun by Rebellion :D. There’s even a live version on our new album!

MiM: You are a band with more than twenty years of training and many records and concerts in their career. Looking back, how would you rate the work of the band all these years?

Fabrizio: I can’t rate anything here. 20 years ago, I tried to impress my buddies with a solid kickflip. A radio host once introduced us by saying that if you listen to every Rebellion album, you are fit for history class. Unfortunately, we haven’t been gifted a sword yet.

MiM: What plans do you have to promote this album? Are there concerts or tours scheduled for this new year?

Fabrizio: This summer, we will pause a little to focus on family and songwriting. We’ll start playing shows late in September. We’ll keep you guys updated through our social media, so feel free to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, or even Spotify. In October, we’ll be touring Croatia and Slovenia. Unfortunately, no Spain this year. But as I said earlier, we’d love to do that again very soon.
