“La música es una forma de dejar de lado los problemas”
El poderoso trío de Rock Alternativo Lost Zone del norte de Italia lanzó el pasado 5 de abril su nuevo álbum 'Ordinary Misery' a través del sello Drakkar Entertainment. Made in Metal habla con la banda para saber todo sobre este álbum.
MiM: Son una banda formada hace unos años. ¿Cómo surgió la idea de crear la banda? ¿Cómo valorarías el trabajo realizado durante todo este tiempo?
LZT Lost Zone es una banda de rock alternativo de una pequeña región alpina en el norte de Italia. Los miembros son: Florian Mahlknecht (voz, guitarra), Andre Plaickner (bajo, gritos) y Simon Mair (batería, rap). Simon y Florian son primos y se conocen desde la infancia. Comenzaron a hacer música juntos cuando eran adolescentes y conocieron a Andre en un concierto local. Más tarde se unió a la banda como bajista y gritón, cuando un ex miembro dejó la banda.
MiM: ¿Qué tan difícil ha sido para ti entrar en el complicado mundo de la industria musical?
LZ: Ha sido realmente difícil. Es un negocio jodido que es casi imposible de resolver por tu cuenta. Hace un par de años conocimos a nuestra gerencia, quienes pensaron mucho en nosotros y nos ayudaron a ingresar a esta industria.
MiM: Ordinary Misery (Drakkar Entertainment, 2024) es un álbum con un sonido sorprendente!! ¿Qué puedes contarme sobre este álbum? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción? ¿Quién fue el responsable de la producción? ¿En qué estudio de grabación se grabó?
LZ: Tenemos nuestro propio pequeño estudio de grabación donde grabamos, producimos y mezclamos/masterizamos nuestras canciones. Por eso somos 100% de producción propia. Aunque me gustaría señalar que tuvimos coproductores para algunas canciones del disco como ‘Can’t keep running’ u ‘Out of my mind’. Simon y Flo son nuestros principales productores e ingenieros. Por tanto, ellos estaban a cargo de la producción.
MiM: Ordinary Misery es un álbum que, creo, tiene una marcada influencia de bandas como Linkin' Park. ¿Es eso así? ¿Qué me puedes decir al respecto?
LZ: Linkin Park es una de nuestras bandas favoritas y tomamos mucha influencia de ella; sin embargo, siempre intentamos que nuestras canciones sonaran como nosotros. ¡Nunca intentamos copiar nada!
MiM: ¿Cuál es el concepto detrás del nombre de la banda?
LZ: Para nosotros la música es una forma de dejar de lado los problemas y la negatividad y, como su nombre indica, perdernos en ellos. Para nosotros una banda es una especie de refugio alejado de la vida cotidiana, a ese lugar lo llamamos nuestra “Zona Perdida”.
MiM: A la hora de componer material nuevo para la banda, ¿cuáles son sus influencias más directas y cómo logran su sonido?
LZ: Como puedes imaginar, tenemos muchos artistas que nos han inspirado e influenciado a lo largo de los años. Estos son algunos de ellos: Linkin Park, iPrevail, 30 Seconds to Mars, Bring Me the Horizon, Falling in Reverse, Normandie, Bad Omens y One Ok Rock. Desde que producimos nuestra música nosotros mismos, hemos comenzado a desarrollar nuestro propio estilo de producción y sonido. Esto proviene de la forma en que abordamos la creación musical, los sonidos que elegimos y la forma en que organizamos las cosas. Aprendimos esto escuchando a muchos artistas y productores increíbles, pero finalmente encontramos la manera de hacerlo. Supongo que eso es lo que nos hace sonar como Lost Zone.
MiM: Me gustaría saber si desde el principio ya tuvieron claro qué sonido tendría la banda.
LZ: Nuestro sonido ha evolucionado a lo largo de los años y estamos seguros de que cambiará nuevamente en futuros lanzamientos. Sabíamos desde el principio que queríamos hacer música rock/metal mezclada con sonidos electrónicos, pero el estilo exacto surgió de alguna manera y está cambiando continuamente. Pero eso es algo realmente bueno. De esta manera, hacer música nunca se vuelve aburrido y nuestros fans siempre pueden esperar algo similar, pero aún nuevo.
MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo a la hora de componer material nuevo? ¿Es un proceso colaborativo entre todos o recae en una o dos personas?
LZ: Para escribir canciones, normalmente nos encerramos en el estudio y empezamos a escribir y producir música. Aunque todos están involucrados, normalmente trabajamos solos en las cosas y luego compartimos en qué hemos trabajado. Así lo hicimos también para este disco. Revisamos notas en nuestros teléfonos y comenzamos a trabajar en ideas. Una cosa que realmente queríamos probar en Ordinary Misery es trabajar mucho más con otros artistas para crear algunas pistas interesantes. Es más complicado que trabajar solo, pero queríamos ver qué podíamos lograr y realmente creemos que algunas de las características se encuentran entre las pistas más fuertes del disco.
MiM: Normalmente, cuando sacas un nuevo álbum, lo normal después es hacer una gira. ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum?
LZ: Acabamos de regresar de nuestra gira como teloneros de From Fall to Spring. Tocamos siete shows increíbles en Alemania. Este verano planeamos tocar en un par de festivales más pequeños.
MiM: Finalmente, quería que te sintieras libre de compartir algunas palabras con tus fans y nuestros lectores.

The powerful Alternative Rock trio Lost Zone from northern Italy released their new album "Ordinary Misery" on April 5 under the Drakkar Entertainment record label. Made in Metal talks to the band to find out everything about this album.
MiM: They are a band formed a few years ago. How did the idea of creating the band come about? How would you value the work done all this time?
LZT Lost Zone is an alternative rock band from a small alpine region in northern Italy. Members are: Florian Mahlknecht (vocals, guitar), Andre Plaickner (bass, screams) and Simon Mair (drums, rap). Simon and Florian are cousins and have known each other since their childhood. They started making music together as teenagers and met Andre at a local concert. He later joined the band as bassist and screamer, when a former member left the band.
MiM: How difficult has it been for you to enter the complicated world of the music industry?
LZ: It’s been really difficult. It’s a f*cked up business that’s almost impossible to figure out on your own. A couple of years ago, we met our management, who thought of us a lot and helped us enter this industry.
MiM: Ordinary Misery (Drakkar Entertainment, 2024) is an album with a surprising sound!! What can you tell me about this album? What was the recording and production process like? Who was responsible for the production? In which recording studio was it recorded?
LZ: We have our own small recording studio where we record, produce, and mix/master our songs. So we are 100% self-produced. Even though I’d like to point out that we had co-producers for some songs on the album like ‘Can’t keep running’ or ‘Out of my mind’. Simon and Flo are our main producers and engineers. Therefore, they were in charge of the production.
MiM: Ordinary Misery is an album that, I feel, has a marked influence from bands like Linkin' Park. Is that so? What can you tell me about it?
LZ: Linkin Park is one of our favorite bands, and we took a lot of influence from them; however, we always tried to make our songs sound like us. We never tried to copy anything!
MiM: What is the concept behind the band name?
LZ: Music to us is a way to put aside problems and negativity and, as the name suggests, get lost in it. To us a band is kind of a refuge far away from everyday life, we called that place our “Lost Zone”.
MiM: When composing new material for the band, what are their most direct influences, and how do they achieve their sound?
LZ: As you can imagine, we have plenty of artists who have inspired and influenced us over the years. Here are some of them: Linkin Park, iPrevail, 30 Seconds to Mars, Bring Me the Horizon, Falling in Reverse, Normandie, Bad Omens, and One Ok Rock. Since we produce our music ourselves, we have started evolving our own production style and sound. This comes from the way we approach making music, the sounds we choose, and the way we arrange things. We learned this by listening to a lot of awesome artists and producers, but eventually, we found our way to do it. I guess that’s what makes us sound like Lost Zone.
MiM: I would like to know if, from the beginning, they were already clear about what sound the band would have.
LZ: Our sound has evolved over the years, and we are sure it will change again for future releases. We knew from the beginning that we wanted to make rock/metal music mixed with electronic sounds, but the exact style somehow happened and is continuously changing. But that’s a really good thing; this way, making music never gets boring, and our fans can always expect something similar, but still new.
MiM: What is the creative process like when composing new material? Is it a collaborative process between everyone, or does it fall to one or two people?
LZ: To write songs, we usually lock ourselves up in the studio and just start to write and produce music. Even though everybody is involved, we usually work alone on stuff and then share what we’ve worked on. That’s how we did it for this record as well. We went through memos on our phones and started working on ideas. One thing we really wanted to try on Ordinary Misery is working a lot more with other artists to create some interesting feature tracks. It’s more complicated than working alone, but we wanted to see what we could achieve, and we really think that some of the features are among the strongest tracks on the record.
MiM: Normally, when you release a new album, the normal thing afterward is to tour. What plans do you have to promote this album?
LZ: We just came back from our tour as a support act for From Fall to Spring. We played seven awesome shows in Germany. This summer, we plan to play a couple of smaller festivals.
