Bruce Dickinson acaba de llegar a España con su banda. Estará mañana en el Resurrection Fest y el sábado en el Hellfest. No tiene tiempo para hablar con muchos medios, pero nuestro amigo, el tecladista Mistheria, miembro de su banda, con el que siempre hemos estado en contacto, sí nos dedica unos momentos para conversar. 

Mistheria es un pianista, tecladista, organista, productor y compositor italiano, dedicado tanto al género clásico como al rock/metal.

MiM: Tus inicios en el instrumento se remontan a la infancia, la cual estuvo muy influenciada por tu padre. ¿Cuánto valoras el apoyo de tu padre y cuánto orgullo crees que siente por todo lo que ha conseguido?

M: Correcto, fue mi padre quien me introdujo en el mundo de la música. Tenía unos seis años cuando me puso su acordeón (un instrumento que todavía tengo como herencia, tiene ahora unos 60 años) y me dio los primeros rudimentos musicales. Me apoyó durante todo mi recorrido musical, en mis estudios hasta obtener el diploma en "Órgano y Composición" y, posteriormente, durante mi carrera como músico profesional. Casi no hace falta decirlo que su presencia fue fundamental en mi vida y carrera, incluso hoy.

MiM: Prácticamente, el Metal Sinfónico y la música clásica son los dos géneros en los que más tiempo has dedicado a trabajar. ¿Eres un músico que se definirá por este tipo de sonido o, por el contrario, estás abierto a innovar y abrirte a nuevas propuestas? Estaba leyendo que aún no has experimentado con géneros como el jazz.

M: La música clásica fue mi educación musical y estoy totalmente feliz con ella. Me aportó un enorme conocimiento de la armonía, el contrapunto, la composición, la evolución histórica de los géneros, además de, evidentemente, una excelente y minuciosa preparación técnico-interpretativa. Posteriormente, me acerqué al Metal y, sobre todo, a esa rama del género que incluye elementos tomados de la música Clásica, definida como Metal Sinfónico. Después de una serie de álbumes en solitario, en 2013 creé el Vivaldi Metal Project que condensa, optimiza y maximiza mi visión de este género musical. Aparte de eso, toqué otros géneros, desde Pop hasta Rock, desde música de cine hasta Blues. En cuanto al Jazz, me gusta mucho escucharlo.

MiM: ¿Cuál es el concepto detrás del nombre Mistheria y la estética visual que presentas como músico?

M: Pensé en mi nombre artístico cuando creé un espectáculo titulado "Metamorfosis" que incluía diferentes formas de arte, como música, actuación, danza, gráfica y video. Buscaba un nombre decididamente particular y que pudiera ser recordado e identificable, no sé si lo logré, pero seguí usándolo para mis trabajos discográficos y, posteriormente, para cualquier trabajo de estudio y en vivo.

MiM: Tu última colaboración antes de salir de gira fue el vídeo de la canción "Heart of Steel", una excelente canción de Manowar. ¿Qué me puedes decir al respecto?

M: Fui invitado a esta colaboración por un magnífico músico italiano, el baterista Frank Scuderi. Ya estaba muy ocupado preparándome para la gira con Bruce Dickinson, pero realmente me gusta la canción, así que me aseguré de poder hacer esta colaboración, y estoy satisfecho y feliz con ella, considerando también los comentarios que recibo de muchos de mis fans y los de Manowar.

MiM: El álbum de Vivaldi Metal Project titulado "EpiClassica" es muy interesante. ¿Cómo surgió la idea? ¿Cómo fue trabajar con grandes músicos como Mike Portnoy y Steve Di Giorgio, entre otros?

M: "EpiClassica" es el segundo álbum de estudio de mi Vivaldi Metal Project, lanzado en 2022. El primero ("The Four Seasons") se lanzó en 2016, al que siguió el DVD en vivo "Live Concert Premieres 2018". Como dije anteriormente, el Proyecto Vivaldi Metal encarna mi visión de la mezcla entre Clásica y Metal. La peculiaridad de este proyecto es la colaboración con artistas internacionales, como los ya mencionados Mike Portnoy, Steve Di Giorgio y Jeff Scott Soto, Rob Rock, Roy Z, Mike Terrana y cientos de otros músicos increíbles. MiM: ¿Cuándo se lanzará un nuevo álbum de Vivaldi Metal Project?

M: Este 2024 está (casi) enteramente dedicado a Bruce Dickinson y la gira mundial, aun en marcha. Ya tengo 2 o 3 canciones de demostración completas y continuaré el trabajo de producción a partir del otoño de 2024. Todavía no puedo establecer una hipótesis sobre el período de publicación, pero lo que sí es seguro, es que trabajaré con el mismo personal que tuve en EpiClassica: arreglistas, compositores, ingenieros de sonido y estudio: un equipo que conoce bien los mecanismos de esta producción y hace el trabajo es rápido, sencillo y fluido.

MiM: ¿Cómo logras tu alto nivel de profesionalismo y dominio del instrumento? ¿Cuántas horas de estudio diario crees que son necesarias para dominar perfectamente el instrumento?

M: Es un trabajo hecho a lo largo de los años, desde el principio. Cómo llegar a dominar el instrumento es sencillo: estudia constantemente, con pasión, con actitud crítica, sé meticuloso y exigente contigo mismo, no te conformes con los primeros buenos resultados, intenta siempre perfeccionar lo que ya suena bien a tus oídos. Todo esto, evidentemente, requiere horas, a veces días enteros de estudio, me refiero cuando eres estudiante. Posteriormente, el objetivo es mantener al máximo el nivel alcanzado cuando empiezas a trabajar, cuando diversos compromisos ocupan horas del día y, sobre todo, cuando estás de gira. Sobre todo, durante el recorrido buscas preciosos minutos para estirar los dedos, con un instrumento de repuesto para llevar al hotel, durante la prueba de sonido, o a veces si encuentras un piano público en el aeropuerto.

MiM: Actualmente, formas parte del cartel con el que la leyenda Bruce Dickinson se encuentra promocionando su último álbum “The Mandrake Project”. Hasta el momento, ¿cuál es tu opinión sobre cómo va todo y cuál ha sido la respuesta del público?

MiM: ¡La gira mundial "The Mandrake Project" va muy bien, más allá de todas las expectativas! El público está muy emocionado y es numeroso, las críticas de los conciertos son increíbles, los comentarios y mensajes que recibo son fantásticos y halagadores. No podría esperar una gira más hermosa. El aspecto ganador, diría yo, es la gran cohesión con Bruce y la banda, todos tuvimos mucho de diversión desde el primer día de ensayos, tanto en la sala de ensayo como en nuestros horarios libres. Esto aumenta la fuerza de una banda, además de lo que cada uno de nosotros aporta musicalmente al proyecto.

MiM: ¿Qué puedes decirnos sobre el estado de salud actual de Bruce?

M: Está más fuerte que nunca, su voz es increíble, su energía en el escenario es increíble. Durante una gira tan intensa y larga (cuatro meses y cincuenta conciertos), puede haber algunos días un poco complicados por culpa del resfriado, la gripe, el cansancio, etc. tal y como nos puede pasar, y nos ha pasado, a nosotros, los músicos y parte del personal también. En general, Bruce está en una forma increíble.

MiM: Una vez que terminen los compromisos de gira y conciertos con Bruce, ¿cuáles serían los próximos movimientos de Mistheria o cuáles serían los próximos proyectos en los que se involucraría?

M: Como dije anteriormente, volveré a las pistas del Vivaldi Metal Project. Además de trabajar en el próximo álbum, también estamos planificando los próximos conciertos con la agencia. Asimismo, estoy preparando mi nuevo álbum de metal en solitario y me gustaría completarlo en 2025. Además de enseñar en la Lizard Music Academy de Roma (Italia) y trabajar en el estudio como productor y músico de sesión, ocuparé clases magistrales de teclado/keytar y retomar mi trabajo como demostrador con Yamaha en Italia y Europa.

MiM: Mencionaré tres nombres de grandes teclistas. Si es posible me gustaría definirlos con una palabra. Jon Lord, Rick Wakeman y Jordan Rudess.

Jon Lord: leyenda.

Rick Wakeman: icónico.

Bruce Dickinson has just arrived in Spain with his band. He will be at Resurrection Fest tomorrow and Hellfest on Saturday. He doesn't have time to talk to many media outlets, but our friend, keyboardist Misteria, a member of his band, with whom we have always been in contact, does give us a few moments to talk.

He is currently on tour with Bruce, who is promoting his latest solo album, “The Mandrake Project”. Excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to talk to him.

MiM: Your beginnings on the instrument date back to childhood, which was greatly influenced by your father. Is that so? After so many years, how much do you value your father's support and how much pride do you think he feels for everything he has achieved?

M: Correct, it was my father who introduced me to the world of music. I was about six years old when he put his accordion on me (an instrument I still own as an heirloom, he's about 60 years old now) and he gave me the first musical rudiments. He supported me throughout my musical journey, in my studies until I obtained my diploma in "Organ and Composition" and, subsequently, during my career as a professional musician. It almost goes without saying that his presence was fundamental in my life and career, even today.

MiM: Practically, Symphonic Metal and classical music are the two genres in which you have spent the most time working. Are you a musician who will be defined by this type of sound or, on the contrary, are you open to innovating and opening up to new proposals? I was reading that you haven't experimented with genres like Jazz yet. Is that so?

M: Classical music was my musical education, and I'm totally happy with it. It gave me enormous knowledge of harmony, counterpoint, composition, the historical evolution of genres, as well as, obviously, an excellent and meticulous technical-interpretative preparation. Subsequently, I approached Metal and, above all, that branch of the genre that includes elements taken from Classical music, defined as Symphonic-Metal. After a series of solo albums, in 2013 I created the Vivaldi Metal Project which condenses, optimizes, and maximizes my vision of this musical genre. Apart from that, I played other genres, from Pop to Rock, from film music to Blues. As for Jazz, I really like listening to it.

MiM: What is the concept behind the name Mistheria and the visual aesthetic that you present as a musician?

M: I thought of my stage name when I created a show entitled "Metamorphosis" which included different art forms, such as music, acting, dance, graphics and video. I was looking for a name that was decidedly particular and that could be remembered and identifiable, I don't know if I succeeded, but I continued to use it for my recording works and, subsequently, for any studio and live work.

MiM: Your last collaboration before going on tour was the video for the song "Heart of Steel", an excellent song by Manowar. What can you tell me about it?

M: I was invited into this collaboration by an excellent Italian musician, drummer Frank Scuderi. I was already very busy preparing for the tour with Bruce Dickinson, but I really like the song so I made sure I could do this collaboration, and I'm satisfied and happy with it, also considering the feedback I receive from many of my fans and those of Manowar.

MiM: Vivaldi Metal Project's album titled "EpiClassica" is very interesting. How did the idea come about? What was it like working with great musicians like Mike Portnoy and Steve Di Giorgio among others?

M: "EpiClassica" is the second studio album of my Vivaldi Metal Project, released in 2022. The first (The Four Seasons) was released in 2016, which was followed by the live DVD "Live Concert Premieres 2018". As I said previously, the Vivaldi Metal Project embodies my vision of the mix between Classical and Metal. The peculiarity of this project is the collaboration with international artists, such as the aforementioned Mike Portnoy, Steve Di Giorgio, and Jeff Scott Soto, Rob Rock, Roy Z, Mike Terrana, and hundreds of other amazing musicians. As a producer, there can be no more beautiful and satisfying job than working and seeing how each song is forged and grows incredibly from session to session, thanks to the contribution of such phenomenal musicians.

MiM: When will a new Vivaldi Metal Project album be released?

M: This 2024 is (almost) entirely dedicated to Bruce Dickinson and the world tour, still underway. I already have 2-3 complete demo songs, and will continue production work from Autumn 2024 onwards. I cannot yet hypothesize a publication period, but what is certain is that I will work with the same staff that I had for EpiClassica, arrangers, composers, sound engineer, and studio - a team that knows the mechanisms of this production well and makes the work fast, simple, and smooth.

MiM: How do you achieve your high level of professionalism and mastery of the instrument? How many hours of daily study do you think are necessary to master the instrument perfectly?

M: It is a work done over the years, from the very beginning. How to achieve mastery of the instrument is simple: study constantly, with passion, a critical approach, be meticulous and picky with yourself, don't settle after the first good results, always try to perfect what already sounds good to your ears. All this, obviously, requires hours, sometimes entire days of study, I mean when you are a student. Subsequently, the aim is to maintain the level achieved as much as possible when you start working, when various commitments take up hours of the day, and above all when you are on tour. Above all, during the tour, you look for precious minutes to stretch your fingers, with a spare instrument to take to the hotel, during the soundcheck, or sometimes if you find a public piano at the airport... :)

MiM: Currently you are part of the lineup with which the legend Bruce Dickinson is promoting his latest album "The Mandrake Project". So far, what is your opinion regarding how everything is going and what has been the public's response?

M: "The Mandrake Project" world tour is going great, beyond all expectations! The audience is very excited and large, the reviews of the concerts are amazing, the comments and messages I receive are fantastic and flattering. I couldn't hope for a more beautiful tour. The winning aspect, I would say, is the great cohesion with Bruce and the band. We all had a lot of fun from the first day of rehearsals, both in the rehearsal room and in our free hours. This increases the strength of a band in addition to what each of us brings musically to the project.

MiM: What can you tell us about Bruce's current state of health?

M: He’s stronger than ever, his voice is awesome, his energy on stage is incredible. During such an intense and long tour (four months and fifty concerts), there may be some slightly difficult days due to cold, flu, tiredness, etc. just as it can happen, and has happened, to us musicians and part of the staff too. Overall, Bruce is in amazing shape.

MiM: Once the tour and concert commitments with Bruce are over, what would be Mistheria's next moves or what would be the next projects he would be getting involved in?

M: As previously said, I will return to the tracks of the Vivaldi Metal Project. In addition to working on the next album, we are also planning the next concerts with the agency. Furthermore, my new solo Metal album is in the works, and I would like to complete it by 2025. Aside from teaching at the Lizard Music Academy in Rome (Italy) and working in the studio as a producer and session player, I will hold keyboard/keytar masterclasses and resume my work as a demonstrator with Yamaha in Italy and Europe.

MiM: I will mention three names of great keyboardists. If possible I would like to define them with one word. Jon Lord, Rick Wakeman and Jordan Rudess.
