Hablamos con Ali Richardson batería de los reformados metaleros de Glasgow, Bleed From Within, que acaban de lanzar un grandioso LP titulado 'Era' a través de Century Media Records. Aquí esta el resultado de la charla que se centro en el proceso de concepción del nuevo álbum.

Un saludo Ali, gracias por tu tiempo, quería felicitaros por el gran álbum que habéis publicado, suena genial. Un álbum con un groove enrome pero que suena mucho más maduro. Me alegro de que hayas vuelto.

Gracias por las amables palabras.

¿'Era' es vuestro primer álbum en cinco años. ¿Habéis sentido alguna presión?

No hubo mucha presión para juntar el álbum. O no había más de lo habitual. Siempre somos muy duros con nosotros mismos y esta vez no fue diferente. Naturalmente, sentimos una progresión en la composición de las canciones y capacidades técnicas, así que solo nos concentramos en hacer que cada canción sea lo mejor posible sin pensar demasiado en el mundo exterior.

¿Por qué BLEED FROM WITHIN ha estado en silencio por tanto tiempo?

Hay algunas cosas de las que no podemos hablar por razones legales... pero, para ser sinceros, solo tuvimos que dar un paso atrás. Hemos sido una banda desde hace más de 13 años y aún no nos ganamos la vida con la música. La vida se puso en el camino, y las cosas se pusieron realmente difíciles para la banda, así que dimos un paso atrás y echamos un largo vistazo a dónde queríamos ir. La respuesta fue obvia. 'Era' es un reflejo de nuestro deseo de seguir haciendo esto pase lo que pase. Nada puede detenernos.

Siempre he pensado que eres una banda infravalorada, creo que deberías tener mucho más reconocimiento del que tienes. Espero que lo tengan con este nuevo LP, que creo que es un clásico tardío de tu género. Eso es lo que dije en la reseña de mi álbum.

¿El nuevo guitarrista Steven Jones ha contribuido a estas nuevas canciones?

Steven jugó un papel importante en todo esto. Necesitábamos a alguien que pudiera ayudarnos a salir de la rutina en la que habíamos caído. La ola de mierda con la que tuvimos que lidiar era terrible. Es difícil sentirse inspirado cuando mucha gente ha tratado de detenerte. Steven se unió e inmediatamente trajo una nueva energía al local de ensayo. Tengo mucho amor por él y su enfoque musical.

La producción del álbum suena fantástica, ¿en qué estudio se grabó?

Grabamos las baterías en Middle Farm Studios con Adam ‘Nolly’ Getgood (Periphery, Animals As Leaders, Devin Townsend), luego grabamos las guitarras nosotros mismos en BFW HQ (nuestro local de ensayo en Glasgow). Nolly luego mezcló el álbum y lo compró para la vida. No podríamos estar más contentos con el producto terminado. ¡Nolly es un mago!

¿Qué pista fue más difícil de completar y por qué?

Desde una perspectiva de batería, la pista más difícil era "Crown Of Misery". Esto debido a que es la última canción que escribimos. Fui al estudio con eso todavía bastante fresco. Mi memoria muscular no era demasiado amplia.

En términos de escritura, "Afterlife" fue difícil. ¡Pasaron años para convertir eso en el himno que es hoy!

Y la grabación? ¿En qué medida fue diferente de los registros anteriores?

Estuve mucho más relajado esta vez, y creo que todos los demás también lo estaban. Pusimos mucho tiempo en esto y nos sentimos tan cómodos con la música que todo parecía encajar en su lugar. Me lo pasé genial grabando con Nolly ya que somos amigos fuera del estudio, luego los guitarristas se grabaron y Kennedy grabó su voz con Steven. Hizo que todo pareciera súper relajado. Un cambio del pasado seguro.

La portada me encanta, ¿de quién es obra y qué significa?

La obra de arte es increíble. Fue dibujado a mano por nuestro bajista, David Provan. Es un artista increíblemente talentoso que siempre ha tenido un estilo de arte increíble y único. Al estar ausentes por tanto tiempo, queríamos hacer una declaración con la portada. Siento que logramos eso con 'Era'. David dio en el clavo.

¿Has dejado algunas canciones fuera del álbum?

Nuevamente, ¡gracias por las amables palabras! El apoyo que hemos visto después del lanzamiento de 'Era' ha sido increíble y realmente significa mucho para nosotros. Nos quedan algunos riffs que estamos convirtiendo en nuevas canciones para el próximo álbum, pero realmente no dejamos nada. Hay 2 pistas extra (State Decay + Drag You To The Ground) que decidimos agregar bastante tarde en el proceso, pero no dejamos nada.

Muy buenos los videos también, ¿fue muy tedioso grabar los videos o se divirtieron con ellos?

Rodar un video es un trabajo duro. Tocar la misma canción 20/30 veces seguidas es una mierda, pero el producto final siempre vale la pena. Así que solo bajamos la cabeza y seguimos adelante. Espero tener más "diversión" con los videos en el futuro.

¿Century Media os ha esperado cinco años o tiene un nuevo contrato con ellos?

Fueron muy pacientes y aún querían trabajar con nosotros cuando llegó el momento. Tenemos un contrato con ellos y todavía tenemos 1 álbum más para lanzar a través de ellos. Siempre nos han dado un control creativo total y nunca nos apuraron para un álbum. Por eso, estoy agradecido. La industria de la música está llena de serpientes y los sellos pueden ejercer mucha presión sobre los artistas a veces, pero nunca hemos tenido eso de ellos.

¿Cuáles fueron tus influencias al momento de escribir estas nuevas canciones?

Nos inspiramos el uno al otro y toda la música diferente que escuchamos. Metal, Hip Hop, Ambient, Sound Tracks, Funk ... todo tiene un efecto en el producto final. No me viene ninguno a la cabeza ahora mismo, pero realmente nos abrimos a nuevos estilos / géneros de música esta vez.

¿Y las letras que te inspiraron?

Siempre he sido un gran fanático de Tool y estoy constantemente inspirado por Maynard. Sus palabras tienen tanto peso y sabiduría. Espero que mis letras y las de Kennedy tengan el mismo efecto en las personas.

¿Qué escuchas, quiénes son tus favoritos?

Pantera, Gojira, Mastodon, Karnivool, London Grammar, The Black Queen and Chromeo. Esa es la parte más escuchada en mi Spotify en este momento. Siempre trato de escuchar una gran variedad de música para mantenerme inspirado y ser creativo dentro de mi género.

¿Algunas bandas escocesas que deberíamos escuchar?

Scordatura, From Sorrow To Serenity y Perpetua. Todos locales para nosotros y absolutamente brillantes en lo que hacen.

Hello, here Juan Raúl from www.madeinmetal.es from Spain, (although I was born in Cuba). Thanxs for your time I wanted to congratulate you on the great album you are about to publish, it sounds great. This album still has groove but it sounds much more mature. I'm glad you're back

'Era' is your first album in five years. Have you felt any pressure?

Thank you for the kind words. There wasn’t a lot of pressure putting the album together. Or there wasn’t any more than usual. We are always very hard on ourselves and this time was no different. We naturally felt a progression in our song writing and technical capabilities so just concentrated on making each song as best as it could be without thinking too much about the outside world.

Why has BLEED FROM WITHIN been silent for so long?

There’s a few things that we can’t talk about for legal reasons ... but to be entirely honest, we just had to take a step back. We’ve been a band now for over 13 years and we still don’t make a living from the music. Life got in the way, and things got really hard for the band so we took a step back and took a long hard look at where we wanted to go. The answer was obvious. ERA is a reflection of our desire to keep doing this no matter what. Nothing can stop us.

I have always thought that you are an undervalued band, I think you should have much more recognition than you have. I hope they get it with this new LP, which I think is a late classic of your genre.

The new guitarist Steven Jones has contributed to these new songs?

Steven played a big part in all of this. We needed someone who could gel and help us out of the rut that we had fallen in to. The wave of shit that we had to deal with was horrendous. It’s hard to feel inspired when so many people have tried to stop you in your tracks. Steven joined and immediately bought a new energy to the rehearsal space. I have a lot of love for him and his approach to music.

The production of the album sounds fantastic, in which studio was recorded?

We recorded the drums at Middle Farm Studios with Adam ‘Nolly’ Getgood (Periphery, Animals As Leaders, Devin Townsend), then tracked guitars ourselves at BFW HQ (our rehearsal space in Glasgow). Nolly then mixed the album and bought it to life. We could not be happier with the finished product. Nolly is a wizard!

Which track was harder to complete and why?

From a drumming perspective, the most difficult track was Crown Of Misery. This is purely due to it being the last song that we wrote. I went into the studio with it still pretty new. My muscle memory wasn’t too great.

In terms of writing, Afterlife was a hard one. It took years to make that into the anthem that it is today!

And the recording? To what extent was it different from previous records?

I was a lot more relaxed this time round, and I think everyone else was too. We put so much time in to this and were so comfortable with the music that everything just seemed to fall into place. I had a great time tracking with Nolly as we are friends outside of the studio, then the guitar boys recorded themselves and Kennedy tracked his vocals with Steven. It made everything seem super chilled. A change from the past for sure.

The cover I love, who is the work and what does it mean?

The artwork is amazing. It was hand drawn by our bassist, David Provan. He is an insanely talented artist who has always had an amazing and unique style of art. Being away for so long, we wanted to make a statement with the artwork. I feel like we achieved that with Era. Davie nailed it.

Have you left some songs out of the album?

Again, thanks for the kind words! The support we’ve seen following the release of ERA has been amazing and it truly means the world to us. We have some left over riffs that we are turning into new songs for the next album, but we didn’t really leave anything out. There are 2 bonus tracks (State Decay + Drag You To The Ground) that we decided to add quite late in the process, but we didn’t leave anything out.

Very good videos too, do you find it very tedious to shoot the videos or have fun with it?

Shooting a video is hard work. Playing the same song 20/30 times in a row is shit, but the final product is always worth it. So we just get our heads down and get on with it. I hope to have more ‘fun’ with the videos in the future.

Century Media has waited five years or do you have a new contract with them?

They were very patient and still wanted to work with us when the time was right. We have a contract with them and still have 1 more album to release through them. They have always given us full creative control and never rushed us for an album. For that, I am grateful. The music industry is full of snakes and labels can put a lot of pressure on artists at times, but we’ve never had that from them.

What were your influences at the time of writing these new songs?

We were inspired by each other and all the different music that we listen to. Metal, Hip Hop, Ambient, Sound Tracks, Funk ... it all has an effect on the finished product. I can’t think of anyone off the top of my head, but we really opened up to new styles/genres of music this time round.

And what about the lyrics that inspired you?

I’ve always been a massive Tool fan and am consistently inspired by Maynard. His words carry so much weight and wisdom. I hope that my lyrics, and Kennedys, have the same effect on people.

What do you listen to, who are your favorites?

Pantera, Gojira, Mastodon, Karnivool, London Grammar, The Black Queen and Chromeo. That’s the most listened to stuff on my Spotify right now. I always try and listen to a wide variety of music to keep myself inspired and to stay creative within my genre.

Some Scottish bands that we should listen to?

Scordatura, From Sorrow To Serenity and Perpetua. All local to us and absolutely brilliant at what they do.
