Entrevistamos a la banda danesa de Death Metal Old School y hablamos de su  recién publicado LP debut 'Danse Macabre'.

¿Cómo fueron los comienzos de la banda? ¿Os conociais antes de tocar en Baest?

Todo comenzó con la reunión de Lasse y Svend en un bar. Se conocían a través del hermano mayor de Svend, y ahora gerente de la banda, y decidieron probar algunas melodías de death metal. Después de poco tiempo, Muddi, Sebastian y Simon vinieron y obtuvimos nuestro primer espacio de ensayo en octubre de 2015. Sebastian y Svend habían estado tocando en una banda de batir juntos y Lasse y Muddi habían estudiado juntos en la escuela secundaria. Simon y Svend conocieron en 'Escobar' que es un bar increíble en Aarhus.

¿Desde el principio tuvisteis las ideas claras de lo que querían hacer, death metal old school?

Sí, Svend y Lasse comenzaron a tocar juntos algunas canciones de la banda Death y escuchamos mucho At the Gates en ese tiempo. Una de las primeras cosas que dejamos clara como banda fue que deberíamos vestir camisetas de bandas de la vieja escuela y vaqueros negros ajustados cuando llegásemos al escenario.

En vuestra música puedes se notan las influencias de bandas como Bloodbath, Grave, Entombed, Dismember o Morbid Angel, ¿Que otras bandas os gustan o os han influenciado?

Hemos estado escuchando mucho a estos viejos bangers y especialmente Bloodbath y Morbid Angel. Aparte de eso, hemos escuchado una amplia variedad de bandas como Opeth, Iron Maiden, Rush, Toto y recientemente una gran cantidad de Skeletal Remains!! 

Supongo que firmar con un sello tan importante como Century Media Records ha sido importante para la banda y os da confianza para el futuro, ¿no?

Es algo muy importante firmar con Century Media y especialmente en un álbum debut! Estamos muy entusiasmados con nuestro trabajo futuro con Century Media y en general con nuestro futuro.

Quería felicitarles por el gran álbum que habéis publicado, suena genial. ¿Cómo ha sido el proceso de concepción de Danse Macabre?

¡Gracias!

Casi terminamos todas las canciones antes de ir al estudio, pero algo de la magia de último minuto sucedió allí. La forma en que escribimos la mayoría de las canciones es en un proceso algo caótico en el que Lasse o Svend suelen ofrecer un riff de guitarra. Este riff a menudo se destroza y vuelve a armarse y luego es hora de que el bajo y la batería hagan su contribución. Por último, Simon hace la letra. Tratamos de hacer que todos sean parte de la fase de escritura para que podamos sentir que es la canción de la banda. Todo está disponible para discusión, pero la mayoría de nosotros obtenemos el mismo tipo de ambiente de riffs particulares, batería o líneas vocales. Trabajamos con ciertos conceptos, como la danza de la muerte o ‘Danse Macabre’, y de los conceptos desarrollamos un lenguaje artístico todos juntos.

¿Qué pista fue más difícil de completar y por qué?

Quizás "Ego te Absolvo" ya que fue la última canción que se terminó. Simon tuvo que hacer más texto para la canción antes de que estuviera completa, una semana después del proceso de grabación. Pero todo fue bastante suave.

¿Y que nos puedes contar de las letras?¿que os inspiro?

El concepto del álbum es ‘Danse Macabre’ o la danza de la muerte.

El álbum tiene una atmósfera apocalíptica porque esa muerte cosecha todas las almas pecaminosas de la humanidad y los conduce hacia su juicio final del sufrimiento eterno.

Nos sentimos inspirados por las bandas mencionadas anteriormente: Bloodbath, Morbid Angel, Entombed, etc.. Pero también algunos libros nos hacen nos cosquillas!

¿Todas las canciones son totalmente nuevas o rescataste alguna vieja idea que no ingresó en su EP anterior?

De hecho, sacamos un riff de una vieja canción que hicimos, pero aparte de eso, escribimos todo nuevo.

Y la grabación? ¿En qué medida fue diferente de los registros anteriores?

Este es nuestro álbum debut, por lo que solo hemos hecho un EP antes de este lanzamiento. Entonces, el álbum básicamente lleva el proceso de grabación a un nivel superior. Saber qué sonidos y qué ambiente queríamos para el álbum nos ha ayudado mucho. Y el hecho de que hayamos pasado por un proceso de grabación nos ha ayudado mucho también.

Me gusta mucho la portada, ¿De quién es el trabajo y qué significa?

La obra del álbum está hecha por Sebastian Manuel Graneberg, un artista danés y buen amigo nuestro. Hicimos la obra de arte en colaboración con Sebastian, donde tuvimos las ideas básicas y él trató de capturar estas ideas y agregarle cosas también. ¡Estamos muy entusiasmados con la obra de arte! La obra de arte es la Danza Macabra o danza de la muerte donde la Muerte, como figura, lleva a las almas pecaminosas de los muertos hacia el juicio final.

Muy buenos videos también, ¿fue muy tedioso grabarlos o pasaron un buen rato?

¡Nos lo pasamos muy bien grabando nuestros videos! Hacía mucho frío filmar "Crosswhore", ya que se registró en el bosque a finales de diciembre en Dinamarca.

¿Qué bandas o álbumes escuchas estos días?

Skeletal Remains con ‘Devouring Mortality’ ha estado en 'Repeat' un buen rato. Pero también Asphyx con ‘Incoming Death’ ha sido escuchado a fondo.

¿Alguna banda joven de Dinamarca que nos recomendarías?

Serian Damned y Ral. Vamos a hacer una gira con estas bandas este otoño en Dinamarca, algo que nos llena de entusiasmo.

¿Tenéis planes de gira? ¿Pasarán por España?

Como mencionamos, tenemos una gira en Dinamarca este otoño. Aparte de eso, vamos de gira con Abbath en Alemania, Holanda, Hungría y Eslovenia. How were the beginnings of the band? Did you meet before playing in Baest?

It all started with Lasse and Svend meeting at a bar. They knew each other through Svend’s big brother- and now manager for the band, and decided to try writing some death metal tunes. After short time Muddi, Sebastian and Simon came along and we got our first rehearsal space in October 2015. Sebastian and Svend had been playing in a deathecore band together and Lasse and Muddi had studied in high school together. Simon and Svend met a the local ‘Escobar’ which is an awesome bar in Aarhus!

From the beginning you had clear ideas of what they wanted to do, death metal old school?

Yes, Svend and Lasse started to play some songs from the band ‘Death’ together and we listened to a lot of ‘At the Gates’ at that time. One of the first things we made clear as a band was that we should wear cool old school band t-shirts and tight black jeans when we would hit the stage. 

In your music can you influence the influences of bands like Bloodbath, Grave, Entombed, Dismember or Morbid angel, that other bands like or have influenced?

We have been listening to a lot to these old bangers and especially Bloodbath and Morbid Angel. Other then that we have listened to a broad variety of bands such as Opeth, Iron Maiden, Rush, Toto - and recently a lot of Skeletal Remains!! 

I suppose that signing for a label as important as Century Media Records has been important for the band and gives you confidence for the future no?

It’s a huge deal to sign with Century Media - and especially on a debut album! We are very excited about our future work with Century Media and generally exited about our future.

I wanted to congratulate you on the great album you are about to publish, it sounds great.  How has the process of conception of Danse Macabre gone?

Thank you!

We almost had all the songs finished before we went the studio, but some of the last minute magic happened there. The way we write most songs is in a somewhat chaotic process where Lasse or Svend usually brings a guitar riff. This riff often gets torn apart and put back together and then it’s time for bass and drums to make their contribution. Lastly Simon makes the lyrics. We try to make everybody be a part of the writing phase so that we feel like it’s the bands song. Everything is up for discussion, but mostly we all get the same sort of vibe from particular riffs, drums or vocal lines. We work out with certain concepts - as the dance of death or ‘Danse Macabre’, and from the concepts we develop a artistic language all together.

Which track was harder to complete and why?

Perhaps ‘Ego te Absolvo’ since it was the last song to be finished. Simon had to make some more text to the song before it was complete, a week after the recording process. But everything went pretty smooth.

And what about the lyrics that inspired you?

The concept of the album is ‘Danse Macabre’ or the dance of death.

The album has an apocalyptic atmosphere because that death harvests all the sinful souls of humanity and lead them towards their final judgement of eternal suffering.

We feel inspired by the bands mentioned above: Bloodbath, Morbid Angel, Entombed abd so on. But also some books make us tickle!

All the songs are totally new or you rescued some old idea that did not enter in your previous release?

We actually took one riff out of an old song we made - but other than that we wrote all new stuff.

And the recording? To what extent was it different from previous records?

This is our debut album, so we have only made an Ep before this release. So the album is basically taking the recording process to a higher level. Knowing what sounds and which vibe we wanted for the album has helped us a lot. And the fact that we’ve been through a recording process before has helped us a lot aswell.

I really like the cover, who is the work and what does it mean?

The album artwork is made by Sebastian Manuel Graneberg - a danish artist and good friend of ours. We made the artwork in a collaboration with Sebastian - where we had the basic ideas and he tried to capture these ideas and add stuff to it aswell. We are very stoked about the artwork! The artwork is the ‘Danse Macabre’ or dance of death where Death -as a figure- leads the sinful souls of the dead towards the final judgement.

Very good videos too, it was very tedious to record them or have a good time?

We have had a very good time recoring our videos! It was freezing cold to film ‘Crosswhore’ as it is recorded in the woods in late December in Denmark.

What bands or albums do you listen to these days?

Skeletal Remains with ‘Devouring Mortality’ has been going on repeat. But also Asphyx with ‘Incoming Death’ has been listened to thoroughly.

Any young band from Denmark that you would recommend us?

‘I’ll be Damned’ and‘Ral’! We are going on tour with these to bands this fall in Denmark - which we are very excited about.

Do you have tour plans? Will you pass through Spain?

As mentioned we have a tour in Denmark this fall. Other than that we are going on tour with Abbath in germany, Holland, Hungary and Slovenia. We will be more in Europe this fall and winter, but you will have to follow our facebookpage or our webpage for more info on tours.
