"Todas las canciones deben tener ganchos que las hagan agradables y memorables"
Raúl Cardona pregunta a Sean Peck, cantante de la banda Death Dealer, sobre el grupo y los últimos lanzamientos. El guitarrista de esta formación, Ross the Boss, estuvo de gira por España la semana pasada, así que Sean tuvo tiempo y atendió amablemente nuestras preguntas.
MiM: El último disco de la banda titulado “Fuel Injected Suicide Machine” (2021) es un disco que tiene una velocidad musical sorprendente. Heavy Metal rápido y pesado con un sonido moderno. ¿Qué me puedes decir de este álbum?
DD: Nuestra gerencia nos pidió que hiciéramos un EP para mantener el impulso del éxito de nuestro álbum “Conquered Lands”. Nunca antes había hecho un EP, así que era una idea nueva para mí. Creo que tenemos una buena mezcla de dos canciones rápidas y dos de medio tiempo que realmente lo hicieron genial.
MiM: La producción del disco es excelente. ¿Quién estuvo a cargo y dónde tuvo lugar?
DD: Nuestro guitarrista/productor Stu Marshall hace la mayor parte de la producción, pero los otros chicos le ayudaron con algunas cosas de batería. Stu es realmente el cerebro detrás de hacer que suene genial. Estamos en todo el mundo, así que grabamos nuestras partes por todos lados. Hice mi voz en San Diego, bajo y guitarras en Nueva York; batería en Los Ángeles y Stu y su guitarra/producción en Sydney Australia.
MiM: Tu voz es fuerte, un registro vocal asombroso. ¿Cómo puedes mantener su voz en perfectas condiciones?
DD: Ja. ¿Perfectas condiciones? Solo suena así en el disco. Grabé en el estudio de mi casa en San Diego y el truco para mantener mi voz fresca es dormir y beber agua. Este fue un desafío, como grabar todas las otras canciones de Death Dealer que hemos reunido en el pasado. Siempre estoy probando nuevas técnicas y trucos para mantenerlo interesante.
MiM: La pista número cinco, “Invasion”, musicalmente hablando, es una canción lenta pero pesada, rompiendo un poco con la estética musical de las tres canciones anteriores. ¿Qué me puedes decir sobre este tema? ¿De qué trata la letra?
DD: Es un relato histórico de la historia de Ghengis Khan. Investigué mucho al respecto e incluí muchos nombres detallados. Stu tenía esos sonidos geniales que realmente le daban una vibra. Ese es uno de mis favoritos en el EP. Es un ejemplo de cómo seguimos experimentando con lo que estamos haciendo.
MiM: ¿Quién diseña la portada del álbum?
DD: Sí, lo diseñé yo. Marc Sasso tomó el boceto exacto que hice y se fue con él. Este EP es un tema de Mad Max. El título es directamente de la primera película de Mad Max, por lo que empaquetamos todo el EP con un diseño a juego. La pieza de voz de introducción también prepara el escenario.
MiM: ¿Cómo defines el sonido de la banda?
DD: Realmente somos una banda clásica de heavy metal, pero también nos aventuramos en áreas de thrash, power metal y hard rock. Realmente cubrimos la gama de estilos, pero la base son las guitarras y las voces que gritan. Todas las canciones deben tener ganchos que las hagan agradables y memorables. MiM: Death Dealer está formado casi en su totalidad por miembros de otras bandas. Entonces, Death Dealer es un proyecto o banda consolidada dentro de la escena del metal internacional.
DD: Bueno, cuando empezamos queríamos dejar claro que éramos una banda y no un proyecto, por eso hicimos una gira de inmediato. Tocar en vivo juntos fue genial, ya que hicimos muchos espectáculos importantes. Todos hemos estado ocupados, así que no hemos estado de gira juntos por un tiempo, pero seguimos sacando discos, ¡ja!
MiM: Musicalmente, ¿cuáles dirías que son las diferencias y similitudes entre este álbum y el anterior?
DD: Difícil de decir. Estas canciones en realidad fueron tomadas de nuestro próximo quinto cd completamente terminado, ya que el cuarto cd ya estaba terminado también. No estoy seguro de que haya una diferencia distinguible, ya que solo escribimos canciones de metal con las que nos gusta rockear. ¡Siempre estamos mezclando la velocidad y el medio tiempo e incluso algunas baladas para hacer una montaña rusa de heavy metal realmente interesante!
MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo en la banda? ¿Cómo se decide qué canción formará parte de un álbum?
DD: Ross escribe algunas canciones y hace sus propias pistas en cada canción, pero Stu y yo hacemos el trabajo pesado cuando se trata de escribir. Stu escribe todo tipo de cosas y me envía dos o tres canciones a la semana. Así es como terminamos los álbumes completos cuatro y cinco tan rápido. También escribo riffs y los tarareo y Stu los traduce a riffs de guitarra reales. También grabé muchas ideas de melodías vocales que se convertirán en canciones. Escribo todas las melodías vocales y las letras excepto por un par de excepciones, si Stu ya tiene algo genial en mente.
MiM: Estos últimos dos años han sido inusuales y difíciles para los músicos debido a la pandemia. ¿Cómo han manejado esta situación, en este tiempo? ¿A qué se han dedicado?
DD: Bueno, nos mantuvimos muy ocupados escribiendo y grabando. Escribimos el EP y dos discos de larga duración para Death Dealer y también tengo un nuevo disco de Cage, también tengo otro proyecto secreto en proceso y también hicimos un nuevo disco de The Three Tremors. ¡¡Uf!!
MiM: ¿Concierto y planes de gira este año?
DD: Ya tenemos otro álbum hecho y parece que estamos planeando una gran gira para ese en 2023. El próximo disco, nuestro cuarto de larga duración, podría ser el mejor hasta ahora. Sé que Stu piensa eso. Pero sí, entraremos en el circuito de giras seguro.

The songs all have to have hooks that make the songs enjoyable and memorable.
Raul Cardona asks Sean Peck, singer of the band Death Dealer, about the group and the last releases. The guitar player in this line-up, Ross the Boss, was touring Spain last week so, Sean had time and nicely attend to our questions.
MiM: The latest album by the band entitled "Fuel Injected Suicide Machine" (2021) is an album that has surprising musical speed. Fast and heavy Heavy Metal with a modern sound. What can you tell me about this album?
DD: We were asked by our management to do an EP to keep the momentum going off our “Conquered Lands” album success. I had never done an EP before, so it was a new idea for me. I think we have a nice mix of two fast songs and two mid-tempo ones that really made it great.
MiM: The production of the album is excellent. Who was in charge and where did it take place?
DD: Our guitarist/producer Stu Marshall does most of the production but he had some other guys help with some drum stuff. Stu really is the mastermind behind making it sound great. We are all over the world so there is just us recording our parts all over the place. I did my vocals in San Diego, bass and guitars in New York; drums in Los Angeles, and Stu and his guitar/production in Sydney Australia.
MiM: Your voice is strong, with an amazing vocal register. How can you keep his voice in perfect condition?
DD: Ha. Perfect condition? It only sounds like that on the record. I recorded at my home studio in San Diego and the trick to keeping my voice fresh is to sleep and drink water. This was a challenging one to record like all the other Death Dealer songs we have put together in the past. I am always trying new techniques and tricks to keep it interesting.
MiM: Track number five, “Invasion”, musically speaking, is a slow but heavy song, breaking a little with the musical aesthetics of the three previous songs. What can you tell me about this topic? What are the lyrics about?
DD: It is a historical telling of the history of Ghengis Khan. I did a lot of research on it and included a lot of detailed names. Stu had those cool sounds going that really put a vibe into it. That is one of my favorites on the EP. It is an example of how we keep experimenting with what we are doing.
MiM: Who designed the album cover?
DD: Yes I designed it. Marc Sasso took the exact sketch I did and went with it. This EP is a Mad Max theme. The title is straight from the first Mad Max movie, so we packaged the entire EP with art to match. The intro voice piece kind of sets the stage as well.
MiM: How do you define the sound of the band?
DD: We really are a classic heavy metal band but we venture into thrash, power metal, and hard rock areas too. We really cover the gamut of styles but the foundation is screaming guitars and vocals. The songs all have to have hooks that make the songs enjoyable and memorable. Ross really demands that too.
MiM: Death Dealer is made up almost entirely of members of other bands. So, Death Dealer is a consolidated project or band within the international metal scene.
DD: Well, when we started that was a thing we wanted to make a point of that we were a band and not a project that is why we toured right away. Playing live together was great as we did a lot of big shows, We have all been busy so we have not toured together for a while now but we keep putting out records ha!
MiM: Musically, what would you say are the differences and similarities between this album and the previous one?
DD: Tough to say. These songs were actually taken from our fully finished 5th upcoming cd since the 4th cd was already completed as well. I am not sure there is a distinguishable difference, as we just write metal songs that we like to rock ourselves to. We are always mixing the speed and the mid-tempo and even some ballad stuff to make a really interesting roller coaster ride of screaming heavy metal!
MiM: How is the creative process in the band? How it is decided what song will be part of an album?
DD: Ross writes some songs and does all his own leads on every song but Stu and I do the heavy lifting when it comes to writing. Stu writes all kinds of stuff and sends me two or three songs a week. That is how we got the completed albums four and five done so fast. I also write riffs and hum them out and Stu will translate them into real guitar riffs. I also will record a lot of vocal melody ideas that turn into songs. I write all the vocal melodies and lyrics except for a couple of exceptions if Stu has something cool in mind already.
MiM: These last two years have been unusual and difficult for musicians due to the pandemic. How have they handled this situation, at this time? What have they dedicated themselves to?
DD: We'll, we kept really busy writing and recording. We wrote the EP and two full-length records for Death Dealer and I have a new Cage record done as well, I also have another secret project in the works and we also did an entirely new The Three Tremors Record too. Whew!!
MiM: Concert and tour plan this year?
DD: We have another album already done and are planning a big tour for that one in 2023 looks like. The next record our fourth full length could be our best one yet. I know Stu thinks so. But yes, we will get into the touring circuit for sure.
