"No hay un mensaje real, yo diría que es el de que nunca te rindas"

El 29 de abril, la banda finlandesa de heavy metal Existence Depraved lanzó el álbum “Dissonant Image” bajo el prestigioso sello discográfico Art Gates Records. Raúl Cardona de Made in Metal se acerca a la banda para hablar de los detalles de este nuevo disco y Toni Tieaho, (Voz, Guitarra, Sintetizador)

MiM: ¡Hola chicos! ¿Cómo estás?

Toni: hola! Encantado de conocerte! Estamos bien. Horario de verano en Finlandia y, con suerte, tendremos días soleados aquí tanto como sea posible.

MiM: ¿Cuéntame sobre los inicios de la banda?

Toni: Decidí fundar Existence Depraved en 2018. Primero era solo un proyecto de banda y un proyecto paralelo para Crystalic que se estaba desvaneciendo poco a poco y necesitaba crear algo nuevo para hacer música. Lancé el primer EP en 2019 con solo dos miembros en la banda y usábamos una caja de ritmos. Después de eso, comencé a buscar miembros para una banda realmente activa y tuve suerte de encontrarlos entre mis antiguos compañeros de banda. Todo el mundo ha estado en una banda antes durante mucho tiempo, por lo que es una especie de formación profesional.

MiM: “Dissonant Image” (Art Gates Records, 2022) tiene un sonido pesado, pegadizo y con riffs contundentes, muy cercano al Thrash Metal y los cambios de registros vocales marcan la seña de identidad de la banda. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción musical? ¿Quién estuvo a cargo de la producción?

Toni: Por lo general Matti, o yo, componemos la estructura de la canción en casa y luego verificamos con la banda si todo funciona. Podríamos hacer algunos cambios en la canción y lo organizamos todo junto para obtener el mejor resultado. Grabamos la batería en la cabaña de verano de Timo. Guitarras y bajo en casa de Matti. Grabé las voces en nuestro lugar de ensayo y Matti editó y mezcló todo junto. Matti tiene buen equipo para grabar y es profesional en la grabación y mezcla de música. Entonces podemos decir que todos los miembros juntos están a cargo de la producción.

MiM: ¿Quién canta voces guturales?

Toni: Matti hizo las voces guturales 

MiM: Tu tono de voz es realmente inusual y me imagino que debe ser complicado además de cantar, tocar guitarra y sintetizador. ¿Cómo te las arreglarías cuando tocas en vivo?

Toni: Bueno, los sintetizadores que toqué, y Matti tocó algunos también, se van a tocar como pistas de acompañamiento en los shows en vivo. Entonces puedo concentrarme en cantar y tocar la guitarra.

MiM: Me gustaría saber si desde un principio ya tuviste muy claro el sonido que tendría la banda.

Toni: En realidad no. El sonido tomó forma poco a poco cuando hubo más canciones listas.

MiM: ¿De qué tratan las letras? ¿Cuál es el mensaje?

Toni: Las letras son sobre la humanidad y el ser humano en este mundo loco. Luchando y sobreviviendo en la vida cotidiana con la mente humana. No hay un mensaje real, pero yo diría que es el de que nunca te rindas. Las cosas siempre mejorarán con el tiempo.

MiM: Cuando se trata de componer material nuevo, ¿cuáles son tus principales influencias?

Toni: Creo que las influencias serán algo entre Devin Townsend, Soilwork, Scar Symmetry, etc. Por supuesto, siempre es genial agregar algunos géneros bastante diferentes en tu música también. Algunas cosas atmosféricas con teclados, por ejemplo, lo que suena como si no fuera de este mundo. 

MiM: ¿Cómo te ha afectado la situación de la pandemia y el confinamiento en los últimos dos años?

Toni: No nos ha influenciado tanto. Por supuesto, nuestro estado de ánimo puede haber estado bajo a veces, pero en realidad puedes convertirlo en algo positivo y componer música nueva a partir de esos sentimientos.

MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum? ¿Conciertos o giras programadas este año?

Toni: ¡Hacer shows en vivo y componer nuevas canciones! Aún no hay conciertos reservados, ¡pero estamos llegando al punto en que estamos listos para conseguir algunos espectáculos! ¡Así que estamos entusiasmados con eso, por supuesto!

MiM: Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.

"There’s no actual message, I would say never give up. Things will always get better in time"

On April 29, Finland’s Heavy Metal band Existence Depraved released the album “Dissonant Image” under the prestigious record label Art Gates Records. Raúl Cardona from Made in Metal approaches the band to talk about the details of this new album and Toni Tieaho, (Vocals, Guitar, Synth) 

MiM: Hello guys! How are you? 

Toni: Hello! Nice to meet you! We are just fine. Summertime in Finland and hopefully we’ll get sunny days here as much as possible,

MiM: Tell me about the beginnings of the band? 

Toni: I decided to found Existence Depraved in 2018.  First, it was just a project band and side project for Crystalic which was fading away little by little and I needed to create something new to make music. I released my first EP in 2019 and then we had only two members in the band and we used a drum machine back then. After that, I started to search for members of real active bands and I’m lucky I found those from my old band fellows. Everyone has been in a band before for a long time so it’s a kind of a professional line-up.

MiM: “Dissonant Image” (Art Gates Records, 2022) has a heavy sound, catchy and strong riffs, very close to Thrash Metal and the changes of vocal registers make the hallmark of the band. How was the process of recording and music production? Who was in charge of the production?

Toni: Usually I or Matti compose song structure at home and after that, we check with the band if everything is working. We might do some changes to the song and we arrange it all together to get the best result. We recorded drums at Timo’s summer cabin. Guitars and bass we recorded at Matti’s home. I recorded vocals at our rehearsal place and Matti edited and mixed them all together. Matti has good gear for recording and he is professional in recording and mixing music. So we can say all the members together are in charge of the production.

MiM: Who sings guttural voices?

Toni: Matti did the guttural vocals. 

MiM: Your tone of voice is really unusual and I imagine that it must be complicated besides singing, playing guitar, and synth. How would you manage when playing live?

Toni: Well the synths I played and Matti played some as well are going to be played as backing tracks in live shows. So I can focus to sing and play guitar.

MiM: I would like to know if from the beginning you were already very clear about the sound that the band would have?

Toni: Actually not. Sound took it’s shape little by little when more songs were ready. 

MiM: What are the lyrics about? What is the message?

Toni: Lyrics are about humanity and being human in this crazy world. Struggling and surviving in everyday life with the human mind. There’s no actual message but I would say never give up. Things will always get better in time.

MiM: When it comes to composing new material, what are your main influences?

Toni: I think the influences will be something between Devin Townsend, Soilwork, Scar Symmetry etc. Of course, it’s always cool to add some quite different genres in your music a bit as well. Some atmospheric stuff with keyboards for example what sounds like it’s not from this world. 

MiM: How has the situation of the pandemic and confinement affected you in the last two years?

Toni: It hasn’t influenced us so much to us. Of course, our state of mind might have been down sometimes but actually, you can turn it into positive and compose some new music from those feelings.

MiM: What plans do you have to promote this album? Concerts or tours scheduled this year?

Toni: Do live shows and compose new songs! No concerts booked yet but we are just getting to the point that we are ready to book some shows! So we are excited about that of course!
