"Todas nuestras canciones tienen una intensa carga emocional"

La banda portuguesa de Metal Moderno Vëlla lanzó su nuevo álbum titulado "Entity - Volume I" el 1 de julio bajo Art Gates Records. Esta obra se estrenará en dos partes a lo largo del año, ambas bajo el nombre de “Entity”. Made in Metal se acerca al guitarrista Oz Vilesov para conocer los detalles de este lanzamiento.

MiM: “Entity - Volume I” (Art Gates Records, 2022) tiene un impacto increíble. Hay mezclas de rabia, ira y dolor en las canciones de este disco. ¿Qué me puedes decir de este álbum? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción musical del álbum? ¿Quién estuvo a cargo de la producción?

Oz Vilesov: En primer lugar, gracias a Made In Metal por darnos la oportunidad de hablar un poco sobre nuestra banda. Creemos que este disco representa nuestra evolución como banda y como compositores. Como habrás notado, no estamos restringidos a un género de metal. Nos gusta explorar diferentes identidades sonoras. A pesar de todo pensamos que con este trabajo logramos tener una mayor cohesión e identidad como banda. Es un paso evolutivo de lo que hemos hecho en el pasado. Tal vez "Entity vol. I" tenga un sonido más pesado y directo, pero eso no significa que el vol.II siga la misma dirección ya que no queremos encerrarnos en una sola cúpula musical.

El proceso de grabación fue intenso. Dos miembros de la banda tenían COVID-19 en el momento en que íbamos a grabar y eso retrasó bastante el proceso de grabación. Por suerte, habíamos preproducido bien las canciones y eso hizo que grabarlas fuera un poco más fácil. Somos una banda que cuando grabamos nos gusta agregar cosas nuevas a las canciones, nos gusta improvisar y agregar elementos nuevos mientras grabamos y “vemos” cómo las canciones toman forma. Nuestro proceso creativo nunca se detiene. Caesar (nuestro bajista) produjo, mezcló y masterizó todo. Es muy exigente con lo que se va a grabar y para él fue una tarea agotadora grabar, mezclar y masterizar todo en tan poco tiempo. Fue un proceso realmente desafiante porque no teníamos mucho tiempo para grabar, mezclar y masterizar y entregar el master final a Art Gates Records a tiempo para su lanzamiento.

MiM: La voz de Pedro Lópes es potente, gruesa y cortante, marcando un sello en el sonido de la banda. Las partes melódicas suenan muy bien. ¿Tu formación como vocalista es empírica o académica?

Oz Vilesov: Curiosamente, esta es solo la segunda grabación seria que Pedro ha hecho en toda su carrera. Pedro es súper talentoso y es todo empírico en lo que hace. Nunca tomó clases. Sentimos que como vocalista aún le queda mucho por explorar, por crecer, por conocerse a sí mismo y a su instrumento y por ir más allá de sus límites, aunque ya está en un nivel muy alto. 

El resto de la banda lo empuja constantemente, dándole confianza, porque sabemos que tiene un potencial tremendo.

MiM: El tema “Of Lament” tiene una carga emocional inmensa. ¿Qué me puedes decir sobre este tema?

Oz Vilesov: Todas nuestras canciones tienen una intensa carga emocional. "Of Lament" es quizás una de las que mejor combina la emoción del instrumental con la emoción de las voces. La canción fue escrita por nuestro guitarrista principal Mario López, quien es una persona con muy buen gusto musical y muy atento a los detalles. Y siempre presta atención a la dinámica entre las distintas partes de las canciones que escribe.

Caesar y Pedro construyeron las líneas vocales para que coincidieran con la vibra del instrumental. Y el resultado es sencillamente espectacular.

En términos líricos no nos gusta mucho abrir el libro porque no queremos condicionar el punto de vista del oyente. Queremos que cada persona que escuche nuestras canciones y lea nuestras letras las relacione con sus propias experiencias, haciendo suyas las canciones. Esto hace que la conexión del oyente con nuestro trabajo sea más fuerte.

MiM: En casi todas las canciones del disco se escucha el sonido de sintetizadores y pianos. ¿Quién lo toca?

Oz Vilesov: Yo, Mario y Caesar, todos contribuimos con samplers, sintetizadores y líneas de piano. Pero quien se centra más en este aspecto es César. Es súper creativo y tiene una habilidad natural para incorporar vibraciones ambientales, muestras, sintetizadores o líneas de piano que encajan perfectamente en nuestras canciones. A veces, las canciones se escriben sin líneas de sintetizador y las agregamos más tarde, y otras veces las escribimos directamente con sintetizadores y pianos. Realmente depende de la vibra de cada canción y de lo que pida en términos de orquestación, sintetizadores y pianos. 

MiM: “Of Rebirth” cuenta con la colaboración de Lucas Bishop (Downfall of Mankind). ¿Cómo surgió la idea?

Oz Vilesov: Lucas, además de ser un músico súper talentoso, comprometido y decidido, es como un hermano para nosotros. Las dos bandas ensayan en el estudio de Caesar. Él vio nacer y crecer a nuestra banda y nosotros vimos el nacimiento y el crecimiento brutal de Downfall of Mankind (por favor, mira a esos tipos). Cuando lanzamos nuestro primer disco “Coma” dijo que algún día quería hacer una colaboración en una canción de Vëlla. Cuando escribimos "Of Rebirth" decidimos que era la canción ideal para que Lucas se uniera a Pedro y soltara una serie de demonios juntos a través de sus voces. Estamos muy contentos con el resultado final y con la actuación de Lucas, a quien agradecemos sinceramente su disponibilidad y cariño hacia nosotros.

MiM: ¿Cómo has vivido esta etapa de cuarentena y cómo estás viviendo estos tiempos?

Oz Vilesov: La pandemia nos ha afectado fuertemente. Tenga en cuenta que lanzamos nuestro primer álbum "Coma", y dos días después, el gobierno portugués puso el país en un bloqueo total. No pudimos tocar en vivo en todas las fechas que teníamos programadas. La promoción se vio afectada porque solo podíamos hacer cosas por los canales digitales y en ese momento no se hablaba de otra cosa que no fuera del Covid-19. Aprovechamos la oportunidad para componer mucho y enviarnos ideas para canciones. También filmamos varios videos musicales DIY, todo para que la promoción y el lanzamiento del disco no sean un completo fracaso. Ahora parece que todo se abre poco a poco, las salas reservan conciertos, vuelven los grandes festivales y parece que volvemos a una especie de normalidad. También hay un mayor conocimiento sobre la enfermedad y parece que ya no volveremos (crucemos los dedos) a un confinamiento. 

MiM: Una vez que el disco esté disponible para todos los fans de la banda, ¿cuáles son vuestros planes para promocionarlo?

Oz Vilesov: Afortunadamente, tenemos un plan de promoción bien definido con Art Gates Records, a quien agradecemos por creer en nuestro trabajo. Con el lanzamiento de “Entity vol. I” también lanzaremos un sencillo al mismo tiempo, con un video musical para la canción “Of Excess”. Esperamos con esto llegar al mayor número de personas posible.

Art Gates ha hecho un trabajo notable y sabemos que con el disco en sus manos obtendremos más exposición y más comentarios tanto del público como de la prensa especializada.

El 21 de julio tocaremos en el Festival de Música Laurus Nobilis, en Famalicão - Portugal. Este es uno de los festivales de metal más importantes de Portugal y tocaremos junto a bandas como Manowar, At The Gates, Lacuna Coil, Downfall of Mankind, Decapitated, solo por nombrar algunas.

Tenemos más fechas programadas para septiembre y los siguientes meses, pero aún no podemos anunciarlas.

Portuguese Modern Metal band Vëlla released their new album titled "Entity - Volume I" on July 1st under Art Gates Records. This work will be released in two parts throughout the year under the Entity name. Made in Metal approaches the guitar player Oz Vilesov to find out the details of this release. 

MiM: “Entity - Volume I” (Art Gates Records, 2022) packs an incredible punch. Mixtures of rage, anger, and pain I find in the songs on this album. What can you tell me about this album? How was the process of recording and musical production of the album? Who was in charge of the production?

Oz Vilesov: First of all, thanks to Made In Metal for giving us a chance to talk a little about our band. We think this record represents our evolution as a band and as songwriters. As you may have noticed we are not restricted to one metal genre. We like to explore different sound identities. Despite everything, we think that with this work we managed to have greater cohesion and identity as a band. It's an evolutionary step from what we've done in the past. Maybe "Entity vol. I" has a heavier and more direct sound, but that doesn't mean that vol. II will follow the same direction as we do not want to confine ourselves within a single musical dome.

The recording process was intense. Two band members had COVID-19 around the time we were going to record and that delayed the recording process quite a bit. Luckily, we had pre-produced the songs well and that made recording them somewhat easier. We are a band that when we record, we like to add new things to the songs, we like to improvise and add new elements while we record and “see” the songs take shape. Our creative process never stops. Caesar (our bass player) produced, mixed, and mastered everything. He is very picky about what will be recorded and for him, it was an exhausting task to record, mix and master everything in such a short time frame. It was a really challenging process because we didn't have a lot of time to record, mix and master and deliver the final master to Art gates Records in time for it to be released.

MiM: Pedro Lopes' voice is powerful, thick, and cutting, marking a stamp on the sound of the band. The melodic parts sound very good. Is your training as a vocalist empirical or academic?

Oz Vilesov: Interestingly, this is only the second serious recording that Pedro has made in his entire career. Pedro is super talented and is all empirical in what he does. He never took classes. We feel that as a vocalist he still has a lot to explore, grow, get to know himself and his instrument, and to go beyond his limits, although he is already at a very high level.

The rest of the band is constantly pushing him, giving him confidence, because we know he has tremendous potential.

MiM: The “Of Lament” theme has an immense emotional charge. What can you tell me about this topic?

Oz Vilesov: All of our songs have an intense emotional charge. "Of Lament" is perhaps one of the songs that best combines the emotion of the instrumental with the emotion of the vocals. The song was written by our lead guitarist, Mario Lopez,  who is a person with very good musical taste and is very attentive to details. And he always pays attention to the dynamics between the various parts of the songs he writes.

Caesar and Pedro built the vocal lines to match the instrumental vibe. And the result is simply spectacular.

In lyrical terms, we don't like to open the book very much because we don't want to condition the listener's point of view. We want every person who hears our songs and reads our lyrics to relate them to their own experiences, making the songs their own. This makes the listener's connection with our work stronger.

MiM: In almost all the songs on the album, the sound of synthesizers and pianos is heard. Who plays it?

Oz Vilesov: Me, Mario and Caesar,  all contributed with samples, synths, and piano lines. But who focuses more on this aspect is Caesar. He is super creative and has a natural ability to incorporate ambient vibes, samples, synth, or piano lines that fit perfectly into our songs. Sometimes the songs are written without any synth lines and we add them later, and other times we write them straight away with synths and pianos. It really depends on the vibe of each song and what it asks in terms of orchestration/synths/pianos.

MiM: "Of Rebirth" has the collaboration of Lucas Bishop (Downfall of Mankind). How did the idea come about?

Oz Vilesov: Lucas,  in addition to being a super talented, committed, and determined musician, is like a brother to us. The two bands rehearse in Caesar's studio. He saw our band born and grow and we watched the birth and the brutal growth of Downfall of Mankind (please check those guys out). When we released our first record “Coma” he said that one day he wanted to do a feat. in a Vëlla song. When we wrote "Of Rebirth" we decided that it was the ideal song for Lucas to join Pedro and release a series of demons together through their voices. We are very happy with the final result and with Lucas’s performance, to which we sincerely thank him for his availability and love towards us.

MiM: How have you lived this quarantine stage and how are you living these times?

Oz Vilesov:  The pandemic has affected us strongly. Notice that we released our first album "Coma", and two days later the Portuguese government put the country in total lockdown. We couldn't play live on all the dates we had scheduled. The promotion was affected because we were only able to do things through the digital channels and at that time there was no talk of anything other than Covid-19. We took the opportunity to compose a lot and send each other song ideas. We also shoot several DIY music videos, all so that the promotion and release of the record wouldn't be a complete failure. Now it seems that everything is gradually opening, venues are booking concerts, the big festivals are back, and it seems that we are returning to a kind of normality. There is also greater knowledge about the disease and it seems that we will not go back (fingers crossed) to a lockdown anymore.

MiM: Once the album is available to all the fans of the band, what are your plans to promote it?

Oz Vilesov: Fortunately, we have a well-defined promotion plan with Art Gates Records, whom we thank for believing in our work. With the release of “Entity vol. I” we will also release a single at the same time, with a music video for the song "Of Excess". We hope this to reach as many people as possible.

Art Gates has done a remarkable job and we know that with the record in their hands we will get more exposure and more feedback from both the public and the specialized press.

On the 21st of July we will play at Laurus Nobilis Music Festival, in Famalicão - Portugal. This is one of the biggest metal festivals in Portugal, and we will be playing alongside bands like Manowar, At The Gates, Lacuna Coil, Downfall of Mankind, and Decapitated, just to name a few.

We have more dates scheduled for September and the following months, but we can't announce them yet.
