"El mundo es un lugar de mierda en este momento"
La banda alemana de Heavy Metal THEM lanzará el próximo 28 de octubre el disco "Fear City" a través del prestigioso sello discográfico Steamhammer/SPV. Una excelente oportunidad para charlar con Markus Ullrich, uno de sus guitarristas.
MiM: “Fear City” (Steamhammer / SPV, 2022) tiene un sonido rápido, guitarras cortantes, solos de guitarra pegadizos, que, junto al bajo, la batería y la excelente voz de KK Fossor hacen de este trabajo un excelente disco. Cuéntame sobre el proceso de grabación y producción.
T: Gracias por tus lindas palabras, me alegra que te guste el álbum. Dado que vivimos en dos continentes diferentes, por supuesto que no es posible grabar todos juntos, pero dado que todos estamos en este loco negocio de la música desde hace mucho tiempo, eso no es ningún problema. Markus Johansson, Richie Seibel y yo tenemos nuestros pequeños estudios en casa y podemos grabar allí. El bajo también fue grabado en mi estudio ya que nuestro bajista Alex vive justo en la zona. Troy (KK Fossor) grabó su voz en un estudio local en Long Island, la batería se grabó en Denver, Colorado, y fue diseñada por Dave Otero. También mezcló y masterizó el álbum.
MiM: “Fear City” (Steamhammer/SPV) es un álbum conceptual que continúa la historia de los trabajos anteriores. ¿Cómo surgió la idea? ¿Por qué la ciudad de NY esta vez como centro de la historia?
T: Markus Johansson tuvo la idea de que todo podía ubicarse en los años 80 y a todos nos gustó la idea, ya que obviamente ese era “nuestro tiempo” y crecimos allí. Troy es un auténtico neoyorquino. Mientras tanto, vive en Long Island, pero durante su infancia vivió en Nueva York, que era un lugar realmente peligroso a finales de los setenta y principios de los ochenta. En realidad, se llamaba "Fear City", de ahí el título del álbum. En cuanto al desarrollo de la historia, era bastante obvio que Nueva York tenía que ser el lugar.
MiM: ¿Trabajar en álbumes conceptuales será la línea de trabajo que caracterizará los próximos trabajos de THEM?
T: Sí, creo que este será el caso. Siempre es un desafío idear algo nuevo y mantener todo en un buen flujo durante todo un álbum, pero también es divertido ver y escuchar cómo evoluciona todo.
MiM: "Graffiti Park" tiene un trabajo de sintetizador y teclado bien marcado. ¿Cuéntame sobre eso?
T: Cuando escribí la música para esta canción, de alguna manera tuve la idea de que un solo de teclado encajaría en esta sección. Programé algo ya que no soy teclista, pero ya teníamos un solo de teclados clave en las demos. Por supuesto, no soy yo quien quiere decirle a la gente cómo tocar sus cosas, así que fue más un marcador de lugar. Cuando a Richie Seibel se le ocurrió el solo final, nos dejó boquiabiertos. Me gusta mucho esa parte.
MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo al componer nuevo material?
T: Escribí la mayor parte de la música y Markus Johansson contribuyó con la epopeya “The Crossing of Hellgate Bridge”. Siempre hacemos demostraciones instrumentales que contienen todos los instrumentos, pero, por supuesto, eso es solo para que todos puedan escuchar cómo "podría" sonar. Entonces cada uno trabaja por su parte y es libre de hacer lo que quiera. Los muchachos son lo suficientemente buenos como para saber qué encaja mejor y qué no, y confío plenamente en ellos. Troy, por supuesto, escribe todas las letras y las melodías vocales por su cuenta.
MiM: THEM proyecta una imagen conceptual bastante interesante y única. ¿Cuéntame sobre eso?
T: Lo interesante de los primeros tres álbumes fue que realmente era una trilogía y lo planeamos así. Hay muchos álbumes conceptuales, pero no encontrarás tantos que cuenten una historia completa en tres álbumes. El segundo álbum incluso comenzó durante el final de la primera parte, solo que, desde una perspectiva diferente, que fue un movimiento genial de Troy. El único personaje que ahora también está en el cuarto álbum, que tiene lugar cien años después, es KK Fossor. Entonces, el nuevo álbum es un nuevo capítulo o incluso un nuevo libro, pero aún está enredado con la trilogía, ya que KK busca a los predecesores de su antiguo oponente.
MiM: El diseño de la portada del álbum es impresionante. ¿Quién estuvo a cargo de la fotografía y el diseño?
T: El gran Mario López hizo la portada y también fue el responsable de las dos últimas portadas. No había duda de que tendríamos que trabajar juntos de nuevo. Jens Reinhold nuevamente fue responsable del diseño y también hizo un gran trabajo. Nunca cambie un sistema en funcionamiento.
MiM: Una vez que el disco esté disponible para todos los fans de la banda, ¿cuáles son vuestros planes para promocionarlo?
T: Tendremos que esperar y ver. El mundo es un lugar de mierda en este momento con giras canceladas, malas preventas y demasiados conciertos. Nos encantaría salir y jugar, así que si hay una oportunidad, seguramente estaremos allí.
MiM: Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.

The Heavy Metal German band THEM will release the album "Fear City" on October 28 through the prestigious Steamhammer/SPV record label. Excellent opportunity for Made in Metal talks with Markus Ullrich, the band's guitarist.
MiM: “Fear City” (Steamhammer / SPV, 2022) has a fast sound, cutting guitars, and catchy guitar solos, which together with the bass, drums, and the excellent voice of KK Fossor make this work an excellent album. Tell me about the recording and production process.
T: Thank you for your nice words, glad you like the album. Since we’re living on two different continents it’s of course simply not possible to record altogether, but since we all are in this crazy music business for a very long time, that is no problem at all. Markus Johansson, Richie Seibel, and I have our little home studios and are able to record there. The bass also was recorded in my studio since our bass player Alex lives right in the area. Troy (KK Fossor) recorded his vocals in a local studio on Long Island, the drums were recorded in Denver, Colorado, and engineered by Dave Otero. He also mixed and mastered the album.
MiM: “Fear City” (Steamhammer/SPV) is a concept album that continues the story of the previous works. How did the idea come about? Why is the city of NY this time the center of history?
T: Markus Johansson had the idea that it all could place in the 80s and we all liked the idea since that was obviously “our time” and we grew up there. Troy is a real New Yorker. He lives on Long Island in the meantime but during his childhood, he lived in New York, which was a really dangerous place in the late seventies and early eighties. It was actually called „Fear City“, hence the album title. When it came to the development of the story it was kind of obvious that New York had to be the place.
MiM: Working on conceptual albums be the line of work that will characterize THEM's next works?
T: Yes, I think this will be the case. It’s always challenging to come up with something new and to keep everything in a nice flow during a whole album, but it’s also fun seeing and hearing how everything evolves.
MiM: "Graffiti Park" has a well-marked synth and keyboard work. Tell me about it.
T: When I wrote the music for this song I somehow had the idea that a keyboard solo would fit in this section. I programmed something since I’m not a keyboard player, but we already had a key solo on the demos. Of course, I’m not the one who wants to tell the people how to play their stuff, so it was more of a place marker. When Richie Seibel came up with the final solo he blew our minds. I like that part so much.
MiM: How is the creative process when composing new material?
T: I wrote most of the music and Markus Johansson contributed with the epic “The Crossing of Hellgate Bridge”. We always make instrumental demos that contain all instruments, but of course, that’s just so everybody is able to hear how it “could” sound. Then everybody works on their parts and is free to do whatever he wants. The guys are good enough to know what fits best and what doesn’t and I fully trust them. Troy of course writes all the lyrics and the vocal melodies on his own.
MiM: THEM projects quite an interesting and unique conceptual image. Tell me about it?
T: The interesting thing with the first three albums was, that it really was a trilogy and we planned it like that. There are many concept albums, but you won’t find that many that tell a complete story over three albums. The second album even started during the ending of part one, only from a different perspective, which was a genius move from Troy. The only character who now also is on the fourth album, which takes place a hundred years later, is KK Fossor. So the new album is a new chapter or even a new book, but it’s still entangled to the trilogy since KK searches for the predecessors of his former opponent.
MiM: The album cover design is impressive. Who was in charge of photography and design?
T: The great Mario Lopez did the cover and he also was responsible for the last two covers. It was no question that we would have to work together again. Jens Reinhold again was responsible for the layout and also did a great job. Never change a running system.
MiM: Once the album is available to all the fans of the band, what are your plans to promote it?
T: We’ll have to wait and see. The world is a shitty place right now with canceled tours, bad presales, and way too many concerts. We’d love to go out and play, so if there’s a chance we surely will be there.
