"La cita de Nietzsche sobre el "abismo" encaja bastante bien con el concepto del álbum"
La banda noruega Gothminister lanzará su nuevo álbum titulado 'Pandemonium' a través de AFM Records. Nuestro colega Raúl Cardona aprovechó para hablar con el propio Gothminister (Bjørn Alexander Brem) y conocer más detalles del álbum.
MiM: El año que viene el álbum "Gotic Electronic Anthems” (2003) estará celebrando su décimo aniversario. ¿Alguna reedición para celebrarlo? ¿Algún plan en mente?
GM: En realidad, en 2023 es el vigésimo aniversario, por lo que el tiempo corre rápido. Ya este año (2022) lanzaremos un Box Set especial antes de Navidad en AFM Records que contiene el álbum "Gothic Electronic Anthems", todos los videos musicales, los siete CDs que hemos lanzado hasta ahora y también pistas adicionales, detrás de escena, etc. ¡la caja especial "Monsters United"!
MiM: Gothminister con este nuevo disco reafirma ser una de las bandas más importantes de la escena del metal internacional. “Pandemonium” (AFM Records, 2022) tiene un sonido oscuro, pesado, que junto a tu voz (que parece venir del inframundo) hacen que la banda tenga un sello único. ¿Cuál es el concepto detrás del nombre del álbum?
GM: “Pandemonium” tiene una historia que se sigue y se desarrolla en cuatro videos musicales en total (“Pandemonium”, “This is Your Darkness”, “Demons” y “Star”). "Pandemonium" es el tema principal del nuevo álbum, pero también es una de las canciones más pesadas, pero también una de las más largas que Gothminister haya lanzado. Estábamos emocionados por saber lo que los fanáticos piensan sobre este nuevo sonido. Además, en una época en la que TikTok y otros canales de redes sociales promueven fragmentos de música que duran solo unos segundos, queríamos hacer lo contrario al presentar el nuevo álbum con una canción de apertura de más de cinco minutos y medio de duración. Estas son las razones principales para abrir el álbum con una canción de este tipo y también lanzarla como primer sencillo y usarla como tema principal.
MiM: Escuchando el álbum siento una conexión entre todas las canciones. ¿Es un álbum conceptual?
GM: La cita de Nietzsche sobre el "abismo" encaja bastante bien en muchos sentidos con el concepto del álbum, y también es parte de la introducción del álbum. Fue un filósofo y crítico cultural alemán que publicó intensamente en las décadas de 1870 y 1880, y la historia de “Pandemonium” también tiene lugar en la década de 1880, al igual que la iglesia gótica noruega donde grabamos muchas escenas también se construyó en la década de 1880. La cita al comienzo del video musical de “Pandemonium”, también está incluida en su letra; "Y si miras largo tiempo a un abismo, el abismo también te mira a ti" tiene muchos significados tanto en general como especialmente en la historia del video musical. La frase anterior de la misma cita también encaja bien: "El que lucha con los monstruos deben cuidar de que él mismo no se convierta en un monstruo”. “Pandemonium” nos lleva de vuelta a la nueva era gótica alrededor de 1880 AC, donde encontramos la ciudad y el reino de Gothminister bajo el ataque de sus propios habitantes. Este video musical ya ha ganado quince premios cinematográficos y sigue contando. Todo el álbum sigue las referencias de esta historia a través de, como se mencionó, "Esta es tu oscuridad", "Demonios", "Estrella" y muchas otras pistas.
MiM: En varias canciones del álbum se escucha la segunda voz de una mujer. ¿Algún invitado especial?
GM: Sí, su nombre es Annette Gil, es una famosa cantante de banda de rock en Noruega y también participó en "The Other Side", o álbum anterior y también a veces está con nosotros en vivo.
MiM: Gothminister siempre ha proyectado una imagen conceptual bastante interesante y única dentro de la escena del metal internacional. ¿Cuéntame sobre eso?
GM: Creo en una versión de superhéroe de mí mismo en el escenario. Cualquiera puede hacer eso. Nuestro amigo Geir (Gerlioz, Dimmu Borgir) escribió recientemente sobre el proceso antes de subir al escenario, maquillarse y tener un ritual con él. Se siente genial. Con el maquillaje y los disfraces puestos, puedes lograr casi cualquier cosa, especialmente mucho más de lo que puedes hacer normalmente. Es confianza y diversión, pero ten mucho cuidado con dejar el ego en el escenario y no llevarlo contigo fuera del mismo. Siempre vuelvo a “Bjørn” y a mi ego privado cuando dejo el escenario…)
MiM: En la intro "Abgrund (Abyss)" suena una Orquesta Sinfónica. ¡Excelente! ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción?
GM: Solo tenemos amigos participando en las grabaciones. Reunimos por ejemplo a muchos amigos en un salón para hacer un gran coro, nos tomamos unas cervezas y lo pasamos muy bien. Parte de la orquesta está grabada en vivo también con amigos y también hay algunas muestras y programación. Nos gusta combinar sonidos auténticos con muestras para obtener una buena mezcla y también una sensación más viva.
MiM: El diseño de la portada del álbum es impresionante. ¿Quién estuvo a cargo de la fotografía y el diseño?
GM: Sebastian Ludvigsen hizo todas las fotos. Terje Johnsen/TRY hizo el diseño de la estatua, los efectos y el arte del sencillo "Pandemonium" y de la portada del LP. Nuestro propio guitarrista Ketil Eggum hizo todo el diseño del álbum.
MiM: Una vez que el álbum esté disponible a todos los fans de la banda, ¿cuáles son vuestros planes para promocionarla?
GM: Sí, hay una gira y ya empezó. Tocamos nuestro primer show post Covid este verano encabezando un gran festival de rock noruego. Se sintió genial. Luego vamos a Finlandia en noviembre, de regreso a Noruega, luego a Alemania. Esperamos muchos más países en la próxima gira, pero es un poco más difícil en este momento, ya que hay una lista de espera de alrededor de dieciocho meses debido a los shows pospuestos para muchas bandas … espero volver pronto a España.
MiM: Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.
GM: Sí, sal de tus redes sociales por un tiempo y sal al mundo real, y asiste al show en vivo de tu banda favorita o una banda que acabas de descubrir. Necesitamos que las personas socialicen más físicamente, no solo que se queden en Internet. El mundo real es más antiguo y más sabio que Internet.

Norwegian Metal/Gothic/Industrial band Gothminister will be releasing their new album titled 'Pandemonium' under the prestigious record label AFM Records. This is an excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to talk with Gothminister himself (Bjørn Alexander Brem) to learn everything about this album.
MiM: Next year the album "Gotic Electronic Anthems” (2003) will be celebrating its 10th anniversary. Any reissues to celebrate it? Any plans in mind?
GM: Actually in 2023 it`s the 20th anniversary, so time is running fast. Already this year (2022) we will release a Special Box Set before Christmas on AFM Records containing the "Gothic Electronic Anthems" album, all music videos, CD releases until now (7), and also bonus tracks, behind the scenes, etc. So watch out for the Special Box Set “Monsters United”!
MiM: Gothminister with this new album reaffirms being one of the most important bands on the international metal scene. “Pandemonium” (AFM Records, 2022) has a dark, heavy sound, together with your voice, (that seems to come from the underworld) making the band a unique stamp. What is the concept behind the name of the album?
GM: “Pandemonium” has a story that is followed and developed in four music videos in total (“Pandemonium”, “This is your darkness”, “Demons” and “Star”). Pandemonium is the main theme of the new album, but it is also one of the heaviest but also one of the longest songs Gothminister has ever released. We were excited to see what the fans think about this new sound. Also, in a time where TikTok and other social media channels promote music snippets lasting only a few seconds, we wanted to do the opposite by introducing the new album with a more than five-and-a-half-minute-long opening track. These are the main reasons for opening the album with such a song and also releasing it as the first single and using it as the title track.
MiM: Listening to the album I feel a connection between all the songs. Is it a concept album?
GM: The Nietzsche quote about the “abyss” fits quite well in many ways to the concept of the album, and is also a part of the intro to the album. He was a German philosopher and cultural critic who published intensively in the 1870s and 1880s, and the story of “Pandemonium” takes place in the 1880s as well, just as the Norwegian gothic church where we recorded many scenes was also built in the 1880s. The quote at the beginning of the “Pandemonium” music video, is also included in its lyrics; “And if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you." has many meanings both in general and especially to the story of the music video. The earlier phrase of the same quote also fits well: "He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster.” “Pandemonium” takes us back to the new gothic era around 1880 AC, where we find the city and kingdom of Gothminister under attack from its own inhabitants. This music video has now actually won fifteen movie awards and is still counting. The whole album follows references this story through as mentioned, “This is your darkness”, “Demons”,” "Star”, and many other tracks.
MiM: In several songs of the album the second voice of a woman is heard. Any special guests?
GM: Yes, her name is Annette Gil, she is a famous rock band singer in Norway and also participated in “the Other Side”, or a previous album, and also sometimes is with us live.
MiM: Gothminister has always projected quite and interesting and unique conceptual images within the international metal scene. Tell me about it.
GM: I believe in a superhero version of myself on stage. Anyone can do that. Our friend Geir (Gerlioz, Dimmu Borgir) recently wrote about the process before going on stage, sitting in makeup, and having a ritual with it. It feels great. With makeup and costumes on you can achieve almost anything, especially a lot more than what you can do as your normal self. It is confidence and fun, but be very careful with leaving the ego on stage, and don`t carry it with you off stage. I always turn back to “Bjørn” and my private ego when I have left the stage…)
MiM: In the intro "Abgrund (Abyss)" a Symphony Orchestra sounds. Excellent!! How were the recording and production process?
GM: We have only friends participating in the recordings. We gathered for example a lot of friends in a room to make a big choir, had some beers, and had a great time. Some of the orchestra is recorded live also with friends and there are also some samples and programming to it. We like to blend authentic sounds with samples to get a good mix and also a more alive feeling to it.
MiM: The album cover design is impressive. Who was in charge of photography and design?
GM: Sebastian Ludvigsen did all the photos. Terje Johnsen/TRY did the statue design and effects and artwork on the single "Pandemonium" and in the LP cover. Our own guitar player Ketil Eggum did the all-over album design.
MiM: Once the album is available to all the fans of the band, what are your plans to promote it?
GM: Yes, there is a tour and it has already begun. We played our first show post-Covid this summer headlining a big Norwegian rock festival. It felt great. Then we go to Finland in November, back to Norway, then Germany. We hope for many more countries in the coming tour, but it is slightly more difficult right now as there are about eighteen months on the Covid waiting list because of earlier postponed shows for many bands….hope to come back also to Spain soon.
MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers.
GM: Yes, get off your social media for a while and get out in the real world, and attend the live show of your favorite band or a band that you just have discovered. We need people to socialize more physically not only stay on the internet. The real world is older and wiser than the internet.
