Con "Tormenta" no quiero decir rayos y lluvia, sino todas las emociones que tenemos que sacar en el momento correcto. Quiero decir, coraje, determinación, habilidad.

Storm, el segundo disco de Odyssea, reune a lo mejor del metal italiano, es el ABC de lo que ocurre en el vecino país en estos momentos. Por ello nos acercamos a uno de sus creadores, el guitarrista Pier Gonella, para que nos contara más. Este es el resultado.

MiM – El primer disco de Odyssea se grabó hace diez años. ¿Por qué decidieron resucitar la banda ahora? ¿Por qué no una nueva banda, un nuevo nombre? ¿Creen que la gente se acordará del grupo después de diez años?
Pier Gonella: Yo fundé Odyssea hace diez años. Originalmente escogí el nombre de Odyssey como el disco de Malmsteen de 1988, luego lo cambié a Odyssea y sacamos el primer disco Tears in Floods.  Escribí las canciones de Storm hace diez años, inmediatamente después de la salida del primero. En ese tiempo Roberto y yo tocábamos en Labyrinth, y Roberto hizo las líneas vocales de cuatro canciones. Luego nos separamos por diferentes compromisos musicales. Yo comencé en la banda melódica Mastercastle y al mismo tiempo entré en la banda de thrash Necrodeath. Roberto comenzó un montón de grandes colaboraciones, Ken Hensley, Wonderworld, y finalmente editó su disco solista titulado Sapere Aspettare. Ambos preferimos esperar el momento correcto para terminar el disco.  El año pasado tuvimos el tiempo y terminamos el disco.  Continuamos con el nombre de Odyssea porque el equipo de músicos es el mismo, no nos preocupó si la gente nos recuerda o no, si nos recuerdan es más de lo que esperábamos.

MiM – Mientras grababas este CD ¿Qué ocurre con Necrodeath y Mastercastle? ¿Están parados?
Pier Gonella: No, grabamos el disco mientras continuamos activos Mastercastle y Necrodeath. No fue fácil pero fue una de las razones por la que estuvimos diez años inactivos. El pasado año yo colaboré con dos diferentes bateristas en los directos de  Mastercastle, y con otros músicos en diferentes proyectos, entonces comencé a grabar una canción de Odyssea con cada uno de ellos. De esta manera sin parar el trabajo de mi banda tuve la oportunidad de reunir muchos grandes músicos y buenos amigos en el mismo disco. Esta es la razón por la cual nos gusto llamarlo "Odyssea Project”. No hay una banda real y si muy buenos músicos alrededor de Pier Gonella y Rob Tiranti.

MiM – A propósito, hay muchas diferencias entre Necrodeath y Mastercastle pero Odyssea está más cerca de Mastercastle que de Necrodeath? ¿Por qué?
Pier Gonella: Aun cuando a mí me gustan los dos estilos musicales, el más melódico y el más extremo, crecí estudiando a guitarristas melódicos como Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen y otros, de manera que cuando compongo estas son las pautas a seguir. Cuando escribo música para Necrodeath trabajo con Peso, baterista y miembro fundador. Él marca las pautas y me guía  hacia el lado más extremo. De todas maneras, pienso que Odyssea es también diferente a  Mastercastle, es más poderoso, veloz y épico.

MiM – Cuales son las principales diferencias entre Tears in floods y Storm?  Tal vez hay contactos entre los títulos de ambos discos. “Storm of tears”, la tormenta de lagrimas provoca una inundación “flood” o algo similar.
Pier Gonella: No hay relación directa entre los títulos aunque hay algunos puntos en común.  Comenzando por las portadas, ambas presentan paisajes grandes y melancólicos con algunos elementos en primer plano, (el guerrero y el gran árbol). Este es el mensaje positivo.  El primer disco de Odyssea y su portada fue dedicada a los “restos del poder, de una guerra”, invitando a la gente a reorganizarse en una vida mejor, sin guerras, sin violencia, etc. El mensaje que intento explicar con Storm también es positivo. Con Storm no quiero decir rayos y lluvia, sino todas las emociones que tenemos que sacar en el momento correcto. Quiero decir, coraje, determinación, habilidad.  Con frecuencia pienso en la tormenta unos minutos antes de salir al escenario para una actuación importante. Me concentro y entonces dejo que la tormenta arranque.

MiM – Invitaste a  “la crème de la crème” de la escena italiana. Algunos de ellos son muy famosos a nivel mundial y otros no lo son tanto, aunque igualmente buenos. Quisiéramos preguntarte sobre algunos de ellos pero en términos generales, ¿por qué decidiste incluir más de veinte músicos?
Pier Gonella: Lo hice porque sé que Odyssea no es una banda realmente activa sino un proyecto, aunque me guste mucho. Comencé colaborando con los músicos de Mastercastle  como Giorgia Gueglio (vocalista), Steve Vawamas (bajista), y Francesco La Rosa y Alessio Spallarossa (bateristas), sumando a Peso y GI (baterista y bajista de  Necrodeath.  Entonces pensé que una “big band” era una buena idea insertando gente de mi escuela y mi estudio de grabaciones Musicart.  Los profesores  Emilio Ranzoni y Giulio Belzer. Le propuse a varios músicos que amo y respeto que colaboraran,  como la bajista Anna Portalupi (Tarja Turunen, Hardline, Custodie Cautelari), el vocalista y productor Alessandro Del Vecchio (Hardline, Vodoo Circle...), y al guitarrista Alex De Rosso (Dokken), y todo continuo fluyendo.

MiM – Estaba pensando que tal vez el CD se hizo a largo plazo y fuiste grabando con los músicos disponibles en distintos momentos.
Pier Gonella: Por supuesto, la grabación de Storm fue dura y extensa y como bien dices, grabé con los músicos disponibles en el momento. Afortunadamente, trabajando en mis estudios Musicart pude organizar las sesiones de grabación de la mejor manera posible. Cuando escribí las canciones hace diez años, hice todo el trabajo yo solo, grabando un demo con guitarras y bajo, y usando secuenciadores y programación de teclados y batería.  Incluso use algún software que emulaba algunas líneas vocales para las letras. La calidad no fue la mejor pero fue suficiente como para enviarles un demo completo a los músicos y cantantes.

MiM – Teniendo en cuenta el estilo musical de Odyssea, heavy power metal, me asombró encontrarme con Alessio Spallarossa, el baterista de Sadist. ¿Por qué lo invitaste?
Pier Gonella: Alessio Spallarossa (como el resto de músicos y vocalistas) es un magnifico músico y un gran amigo.  Actualmente está tocando también la batería en Mastercastle, fue fácil proponerle que participara. Fue maravilloso mezclar su estilo con mis canciones de power metal.

MiM – Para mí las mejores canciones son aquellas donde los músicos interactúan. Un ejemplo es el duelo de guitarras entre Alex de Rosso contigo en “Understand”. ¿Pensaste en hacerlo de esa manera o fue una coincidencia?
Pier Gonella: No, yo le mandé el material a los músicos después de componer las canciones. En “Understand” dejé un gran espacio para el solo de guitarra y tenía la idea de hacer un “dúo”. Le mandé la idea a Alex De Rosso junto a otra canción para que el escogiera la que más le gustara. Fue divertida su elección. Lo mismo hice con “Tears of the rain” donde hago un dúo de guitarras con Simone Mularoni.

MiM – Otra bella canción es “Ice” mezclando las voces de Giorgia Gueglio de Mastercastle, y Alessandro Del Vecchio. Sin embargo no cantan juntos, ¿por qué?
Pier Gonella: “Ice” es definitivamente una de las canciones más “experimentales”. Quería hacer algo diferente y la idea de mezclar una voz femenina y una masculina me sonó bien.  Conozco a Giorgia y a Ale personalmente y son maravillosos músicos. Sus orígenes musicales son muy distintos y mezclar sus voces fue algo diferente. En la misma canción invité a Francesco La Rosa (Mpire of Evil, Extrema, Mastercastle) en la batería y a Anna Portalupi (Tarja Turunen, Hardline, Custodie Cautelari) en el bajo. Nunca habían tocado juntos pero el resultado fue asombroso.

MiM - En Storm hay un solo de guitarra que me hace pensar que estas influenciado por YngwieMalmsteen. ¿Me equivoco? ¿Hay otras influencias en tu estilo de tocar la guitarra? Pregunto porque en “Apocalypse pt. II” me recuerdas a Steve Vai. 
Pier Gonella: ¡Tienes razón tío! Yngwie Malmsteen fue una gran influencia en mi estilo, especialmente en aquellos años en que compuse las canciones. Pero también hay muchos otros guitarristas y bandas, como Vinnie Moore, Tony Macalpine y Queens of the Stone Age. Sobre “Apocalypse pt.II” no me inspire directamente Steve Vai aun cuando me gusta mucho por supuesto. Pero tienes razón, el sonido es similar en muchos aspectos. Encontré también la inspiración en una banda italiana llamada Goblin

MiM – Por qué agregaste una versión alternativa de  “No compromise”. ¿Hay suficientes diferencias entre esta y la original?
Pier Gonella: No hay grandes diferencias. La razón principal es que al principio no encontraba un baterista que la tocara y finalmente fueron dos los que la hicieron, (Andrea Ge de Queenmania y ex Exilia, y Christo Machete, el primer baterista de Odyssea) y me gustó usar ambas versiones.  En la versión alternativa también agregue un solo de teclado de Andrea De Paoli (Labyrinth, Vision Divine y otros) y un solo de guitarra de Dick Laurent (Cadaveria).

MiM - ¿Existe alguna posibilidad de salir y girar presentando este CD? Si así fuera ¿quiénes integrarían la banda? ¿Alguna posibilidad de venir a España?
Pier Gonella: Sería muy lindo poder hacer alguna gira pero no es fácil por que los músicos y cantantes, incluyéndome a mí, tenemos bandas que están en activo. Aunque teniendo en cuenta que el disco está teniendo mayor visibilidad que la que esperábamos lo estamos pensando, y por supuesto, sería maravilloso ir a España.

MiM – ¿Si quieres comentar algo más, este es el momento?

With “Storm” I don’t mean thunders and rains, but all emotions that we had to “shoot” in the right moments. I mean courage, grit, skill.

Storm, the second Odyssea CD, gather the best of the Italian metal scene, is the ABC of what is happening in this neighbor country right now. For this reason we ask one of its master minds, the guitar player Pier Gonella, to know more about it. This is the result.

MiM - The first Odyssea CD was recorded 10 years ago. Why did you decide to reborn this band now? Why not a new band, a new name? Do you consider the people would remember this band after ten years?
Pier Gonella: I founded Odyssea ten years ago. Originally I choose the name Odyssey like the Malmsteen album of 1988, then I changed in Odyssea and we released the first album "Tears in Floods". So  I wrote all songs and lyrics of this new album "Storm“ ten years ago, immediately after the release of the first. At that time I and Roberto were playing together in Labyrinth band, and Roberto made vocal lines of 4 songs. Then we had a split because of many musical engagements. I started the melodic metal band Mastercastle and in the same time I entered the thrash band Necrodeath. Roberto started a lot of musicals, great collaborations, Ken Hensley, Wonderworld, and finally He released his solo album called Sapere Aspettare. So we preferred to wait the right moment for complete the album.  Last year we founded the right time and we finished the work.  We continued as Odyssea because the musical staff is the same, we didn’t care if people remember it or not, but we noticed that remember it more than we expected.

MiM - While recording this CD, What happen with Necrodeath or Mastercastle? Are there in standby?
Pier Gonella: No, I recorded the album continuing Mastercastle and Necrodeath activity. It was not easy but it’s one of the reasons of the ten years gap. Last years I collaborated with 2 different drummers for Mastercastle live activity, and other musicians for different projects, so I started recording one Odyssea song with each of them during the session of their projects. In this way I didn’t stopped my bands and had the chance to collect many great musicians and friends all in the same album as part of it. This is the reason why I like to call it as "Odyssea Project”. There is not a real band, but many great musicians and singers near the centre Pier Gonella / Rob Tiranti.

MiM - By the way, there are a lot of differences between Necrodeath and Mastercastle but, Is Odyssea closer to Mastercastle than Necrodeath? Why?
Pier Gonella: Even if I like both kind of music, more melodic and more extreme, I grew up studying melodic guitar player like Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen and more, so when I compose I follow then. When I wrote music for Necrodeath I work with the founder and drummer Peso, he start and guide me through in the more extreme side… Anyway I think Odyssea is different from Mastercastle also, I think is more power, speed and epic.

MiM - What are the main differences between Tears in floods and Storm? Maybe there is contact between the titles in both CD’s. Storm of tears, the storm provokes a flood or something like that?
Pier Gonella: There is not a direct contact between the titles, but there are many themes in common. Starting from the covers, both have melancholic and big landscapes and some element in front (the remains of warrior and the big tree). That's the positive message. First Odyssea title and cover was dedicated to the “Remains of power, of a war”, inviting all people to reorganize for a better life, with no war, no violence etc. The message I try to explain with “Storm” is positive also. With “Storm” I don’t mean thunders and rains, but all emotions that we had to “shoot” in the right moments. I mean courage, grit, skill. I often think about the storm in the few minutes before going on the stage for an important gig. I concentrate myself and then let the storm begin!

MiM - You invited “la crème de la crème” of the Italian scene. Some of them are very famous worldwide and others are not so famous but as good as the rest. We would like to ask you about some of them but in general terms. Why did you decide to include more than twenty musicians?
Pier Gonella: I started this way because I know that Odyssea is not a real active band, but a project, even if I really love this staff. I started collaborating with people from my bands, like Giorgia Gueglio (Mastercastle singer), Steve Vawamas (Mastercastle bass player), Francesco La Rosa and Alessio Spallarossa (Mastercastle drum players), than Peso (Necrodeath drum player), Gl (Necrodeath bass player).  Then I realized that the “big band” was a good idea so I inserted my school and recording studio Musicart. Teachers like Emilio Ranzoni and Giulio Belzer. Then I proposed the collaboration to some amazing musicians that I have always loved and respected as the bass player Anna Portalupi (Tarja Turunen, Hardline, Custodie Cautelari) , the singer and producer Alessandro Del Vecchio (Hardline, Vodoo Circle...), and the guitar player Alex De Rosso (Dokken), and so on.

MiM - I was thinking maybe the CD took a lot of time to be finished and you were recording with the musicians available at the moment?
Pier Gonella: Of course Odyssea “Storm” was a hard and long recording and as you said I recorded with the musicians available at the moment. Fortunately, working in my studio Musicart I could organize in the better way the recording sessions. When I wrote the songs, ten years ago, I made all work by myself, recording a demo version of guitars and bass. Then I used sequencers and software for drums and keyboards. I used also some software that can emulate a kind of vocals line with the lyrics. The quality was not the best but it was enough for send a complete demo to musicians and singers.

MiM - Taking account the musical style of Odyssea, a heavy power metal, to me was amazing to find Alessio Spallarossa, the drums player of Sadist. Why did you invite him?
Pier Gonella: Alessio Spallarossa (like the rest of the musicians and singers) is a great musicians and great friend.  He is currently playing drums with Mastercastle also, so it was easy to propose him to participate. It was great to mix his style with my power metal songs.

MiM - The songs where different musicians interact are to me the best. An example is the guitar duel between Alex de Rosso and you in “Understand”. Did you think to make it that way while writing the song or was some king of coincidence?
Pier Gonella: No I send stuff to musicians after composing the songs. In “Understand” there was just a long space for a guitar solo so I had the idea of making a “duet”. I sent the idea to Alex De Rosso but I also sent him other song for choosing his best for his taste. It was finally fun. I made the same in “Tears of the rain” song where I duet mu guitar solo with Simone Mularoni.

MiM - Another beautiful song is “Ice” mixing the voices of Giorgia Gueglio from Mastercastle, and Alessandro Del Vecchio. However, they don´t sing together. Why?
Pier Gonella: “Ice” if definitely one of the most “experimental” song. I wanted to try just something different and the idea of mixing male and female voice was good to me.  I know individually both Giorgia and Ale and they are amazing musicians. They came from different musical origins and mixing their voices together was a different try.  In the same song I invited Francesco La Rosa (Mpire of Evil, Extrema, Mastercastle) as drummer and Anna Portalupi (Tarja Turunen, Hardline, Custodie Cautelari) as bass player. They had never been playing together before but the result was just amazing.

MiM - In Storm there is a guitar solo that made me think that you are so influenced by YngwieMalmsteen. Am I wrong? What are others influences in your guitar style? I ask because in “Apocalypse pt. II” the style reminds me Steve Vai. 
Pier Gonella: You are right man! Yngwie Malmsteen was a great influence for my playing, especially in those years. But there are a lot of guitar players and bands, like Vinnie Moore, Tony Macalpine, Queens of the Stone Age. About “Apocalypse pt.II”, I didn't inspired directly to Steve Vai even if I love him of course. But you are right; the sound is similar in many aspects. I had inspiration also from the Italian band called Goblin

MiM - Why did you enclose an alternate version of “No compromise”. Are really big differences between this and the original one?
Pier Gonella: There are not big differences. The main reason is because at the first I had no a drummer for it, and finally two different drummer recorded it (Andrea Ge, Queenmania and ex Exilia, and Christo Machete, first Odyssea drummer) so I love to use both of them. In the alternative version I inserted also a keyboard solo from Andrea De Paoli (Labyrinth Vision Divine and more) and a guitar solo from Dick Laurent (Cadaveria).

MiM - Is there any possibility to go out and touring to support this CD? If so, who could join the line up with Roberto and Pier? Is there any chance to come to Spain?
Pier Gonella: It would be great to make some tour but it's not easy because any of musicians and singers (me also) has other active bands) but because the album is going more visibility than we expected we will think about it, and of course it would be great to came to Spain!

MiM - If you want to say something to your fans, this is the moment?
