La banda suiza de rock/psicodélico Monkey3 lanzó su nuevo álbum “Welcome to the Machine” el 23 de febrero bajo el prestigioso sello Napalm Records. Excelente oportunidad para que Made in Metal hable con Boris (guitarra) de la banda.
MiM: “Welcome to the Machine” (Napalm Records, 2024) es un álbum 100 por ciento instrumental donde la imaginación de recrear escenarios y odiseas espaciales te hace viajar a la distancia. ¿Qué puedes contarme sobre este álbum?
M3: Este nuevo álbum ofrece un hilo conductor definido. Queríamos expresar nuestras dudas sobre la evolución de nuestra sociedad y la dualidad que enfrenta al hombre contra las máquinas, con todos los excesos que esto ya implica hoy y que implicará en un futuro próximo. De hecho, nos inspiramos parcialmente en películas como "Matrix" o "2001: una Odisea Espacial" y en libros como 1984 o Brave New World. Musicalmente, empujamos deliberadamente el lado electrónico de nuestro sonido y lo opusimos al aspecto puramente orgánico de nuestra música. Las piezas de este álbum son una constante confrontación y fusión de estos dos aspectos.
MiM: Fueron necesarios cinco años para lanzar este maravilloso álbum. ¿Qué pasó en estos cinco años? ¿En qué estaba involucrada la banda?
M3: Como apoyo a nuestro álbum anterior, “Sphere”, hicimos una gira durante todo el 2019. También se suponía que íbamos a hacer una gira en el 2020, pero luego llegó la situación del COVID-19. Fue una época muy dura en la que no nos sentíamos muy inspirados y nos cuestionábamos mucho sobre nosotros mismos. Como consecuencia, no fuimos muy productivos durante un tiempo. A mediados de 2021 también tuvimos un cambio en la formación de la banda. Nos separamos de nuestro bajista Kevin y nos tomamos un poco de tiempo antes de encontrar a nuestro nuevo miembro, Jalil. Realmente comenzamos a trabajar en material nuevo valioso a principios de 2022.
MiM: “Collision” es una canción que me llama la atención porque comienza con una línea de bajo durante unos minutos para comenzar con un potente solo de guitarra. ¿Qué me puedes decir sobre este tema?
M3: La idea de esta pista es el encuentro entre humanos y máquinas y lo que podría resultar de esta colisión. La primera parte de la canción es muy sintética, con muchos sonidos digitales. Luego, los sonidos analógicos lentamente toman el control, mezclándose con la electrónica y luego tomando el control y terminando en una especie de caos, dejando la cuestión un poco suspendida y sin resolver.
MiM: “Collapsed” es una canción con una marcada influencia en bandas como Pink Floyd. ¿Es eso así? ¿Es Pink Floyd una de las influencias de la banda a la hora de componer material nuevo para la banda?
M3: “Collapse” está salpicado de pequeños guiños a Floyd, desde el homenaje intro hasta el desarrollo en varias secciones, que atraviesa varias atmósferas, a veces melancólicas y poderosas, pero también espaciales e intrigantes. Pink Floyd es una banda que nos inspiró mucho y nos hizo crecer como músicos y como grupo. Han desarrollado algo absolutamente único. Son maestros en crear ambientes increíbles, hacerte viajar e incluso pensar a través de la música. Una fuente creativa infinita.
MiM: Excelente diseño de portada. ¿De quién estaba a cargo? ¿Cuál es el concepto detrás de este diseño y el nombre de la banda?
M3: Estábamos buscando una obra de arte que se ajustara al concepto general desarrollado en este disco. Trabajamos estrechamente con el artista Sebastian Jerke, compartiendo nuestras ideas y conceptos, y a él se le ocurrió este diseño que encajaba con lo que buscábamos. Básicamente, el concepto era la representación de un objeto que está a la deriva en el espacio, que ha perdido su brújula, vagando en la inmensidad... entonces cada uno tendrá su idea.
MiM: Me gustaría saber si desde el principio ya tuviste claro el sonido que tendría la banda.
M3: En realidad no. Nuestra dirección sonora y musical es siempre un trabajo en progreso, en constante evolución a medida que crecemos como banda y como seres humanos.
MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo a la hora de componer material nuevo? ¿Es un proceso colaborativo entre todos o recae en una o dos personas?
M3: Realmente no hay un cerebro que impulse el grupo. Se trata mucho de trabajo colectivo. Escribimos música tocando juntos, improvisando y compartiendo ideas y emociones. Todos los miembros de la banda son iguales en todos los aspectos y están completamente involucrados en el proceso de escritura y desarrollo del grupo.
MiM: Normalmente, cuando lanzas un nuevo álbum, lo normal después es salir de gira. ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum?
M3: El “Welcome to the Machine Tour” comenzará a finales de abril, hasta finales de agosto y nuevamente de octubre a noviembre. Ya estamos muy emocionados de compartir el nuevo material en el escenario con nuestros fans. Será un buen viaje; No puedo esperar. Manténganse al tanto.

MiM: “Welcome to the Machine” (Napalm Records, 2024) is a 100 percent instrumental album where the imagination of recreating scenarios and space odysseys makes you travel into the distance. What can you tell me about this album?
M3: This new album offers a defined common thread. We wanted to express our doubts about the evolution of our society and the duality that pits man against machines, with all the excesses that this already implies today and what this will imply in the near future. Indeed, we partially drew our inspiration from films such as "Matrix" or "2001: A Space Oddity" and books such as 1984 or Brave New World. Musically, we deliberately pushed the electronic side of our sound and opposed it to the purely organic aspect of our music. The pieces on this album are a constant confrontation and fusion of these two aspects.
MiM: It took five years to release this wonderful album. What happened in these five years? What was the band involved in?
M3: As support for our previous album, “Sphere,” we toured throughout 2019. We were also supposed to tour in 2020, but then the COVID-19 situation came along. It was a very tough period where we didn’t feel very inspired, and we questioned a lot about ourselves. As a consequence, we weren’t very productive for a while. During mid-2021, we also had a change in the band’s line-up. We parted ways with our bass player Kevin, and we took a bit of time before finding our new member, Jalil. We really started working on some worthy new material in early 2022.
MiM: “Collision” is a song that catches my attention because it starts with a bass line for a few minutes to start with a powerful guitar solo. What can you tell me about this topic?
M3: The idea of this track is the encounter between humans and machines and what could result from this collision. The first part of the song is very synthetic, with plenty of digital sounds. Then analogue sounds slowly take over, mixing with electronics and then taking over and ending in a sort of chaos, leaving the question a little suspended and unresolved.
MiM: “Collapsed” is a song with a marked influence on bands like Pink Floyd. Is that so? Is Pink Floyd one of the band's influences when composing new material for the band?
M3: “Collapse“ is sprinkled with little nods to Floyd, from the intro homage to the development in several sections, which goes through several atmospheres, sometimes melancholic and powerful but also spatial and intriguing. Pink Floyd is a band that inspired us a lot and made us grow as musicians and as a group. They have developed something absolutely unique. They are masters at creating incredible environments, making you travel, and even think through music. An infinite creative source.
MiM: Excellent cover design. Who was he in charge of? What is the concept behind this design and the band name?
M3: We were looking for an artwork that fits the overall concept developed in this record. We worked closely with the artist Sebastian Jerke, sharing our ideas and concepts, and he came up with this design that fitted what we were looking for. Basically, the concept was the representation of an object that is drifting in space, which has lost its compass, wandering in the immensity... then everyone will have their idea.
MiM: I would like to know if, from the beginning, you were already clear about the sound the band would have.
M3: Not really. Our sound and musical direction is always a work in progress, constantly evolving as we grow as a band and as human beings.
MiM: What is the creative process like when composing new material? Is it a collaborative process between everyone, or does it fall to one or two people?
M3: There’s not really a mastermind driving the group. It’s a lot about collective work. We write music by playing together, jamming, and sharing ideas and emotions. All band members are equals in every aspect and fully involved in the writing process and development of the group.
MiM: Normally, when you release a new album, the normal thing to do afterward is to tour. What plans do you have to promote this album?
M3: The “Welcome to the Machine Tour“ will start at the end of April, all the way until the end of August, and again in October through November. We are already quite excited to share the new material on stage with our fans. It’s going to be a nice ride; I can’t wait. Stay tuned.
