Los veteranos norteamericanos, Holy Mother, presentan la continuación de “Face This Burn” y su séptimo álbum de estudio: 'Rise', que se lanzará el 7 de junio a través de Massacre Records.

MiM: “Rise” (Massacre Records, 2024) tiene un sonido enérgico, potente, con mucha fuerza. Hard Rock en estado puro. ¿Qué puedes contarme sobre este álbum?

HM: ¿Qué puedo contarte sobre nuestro nuevo álbum, “Rise”? Honestamente, puedo decir que realmente encontramos nuestro estilo en este nuevo álbum. Muchos riffs pesados, muchos estribillos melódicos pegadizos y voces influenciadas por Ronnie James Dio. Tenía muchas ganas de escribir este álbum centrándome en los estilos de hard rock/heavy metal europeos y americanos. Creo que lo logramos en este nuevo álbum.

MiM: En “Rise” se siente una marcada influencia de Ronnie James Dio. Hard rock pesado pero con riffs pegadizos y melódicos. ¿Es eso así? ¿Cómo lo ves?

HM: Sí, definitivamente el álbum “Rise” vocalmente está muy influenciado por Ronnie James Dio, pero por supuesto con nuestro estilo musical. Como mencioné antes, quería atraer tanto al mercado europeo como al mercado americano, pero ciertamente hay varias canciones en este álbum para apaciguar a los fanáticos del hard rock/metal.

MiM: En el primer sencillo lanzado de este álbum “Fire” se escucha al principio la voz de Violet Tirelli, hija de Mike Tirelli. ¿Cómo surgió la idea? ¿Cómo ha sido hasta el momento la recepción del sencillo por parte del público?

HM: En el primer sencillo “Fire”, puedes escuchar la voz de mi hija, Violet Tirelli, al comienzo de la canción. Me inspiró totalmente a escribir una melodía vocal después de que ella cantara sus armonías de tres partes al comienzo de la canción. Ella le dio a la canción una sensación muy espeluznante, lo que me dio la inspiración para escribir algo tan intenso como la canción. Hasta ahora, estamos realmente impresionados por la reacción de los fans ante el primer sencillo y el vídeo. Y eso definitivamente debería prepararnos para el lanzamiento del álbum completo el 7 de junio. El cual sale en vinilo y CD digipack.

MiM: Este álbum tiene varios invitados que aportan y aportan mucho al álbum en general. ¿Cómo surgió la idea?

HM: Bueno, algunas invitadas a este nuevo álbum fueron, como saben, mi hija, Violet Tirelli. Además, en la canción “Live To Die” Richie Naso tocó la guitarra rítmica. Fue el guitarrista en el lanzamiento original en 1998 del álbum Toxic Rain. También hice que Jason Banks tocara algunas guitarras rítmicas y sobre grabaciones. En la canción «Rain», un compañero de banda, Rob Moringino, tocó algunos teclados. Rob es de otra banda con la que toco aquí en Nueva York llamada Entourage.

MiM: «Live To Die» es una de las canciones más rápidas del álbum y aparentemente es una declaración de los principios de la banda. ¿Es eso así? ¿De qué trata la canción líricamente?

HM: Sí, la canción “Live to Die” se remonta a uno de nuestros primeros álbumes que grabamos. Es una canción de heavy metal power metal más tradicional, pero siempre queremos tocarla en vivo para algunos de nuestros muy leales fans de Holy Mother que todavía vienen a vernos cuando estamos de gira. Se escucha bien y definitivamente es una de mis canciones favoritas para cantar en vivo. Por eso quería poner esa canción en el nuevo álbum. Mostrarle a la gente que todavía vivimos según nuestras raíces, al igual que Black Sabbath, Dio, Iron Maiden y Judas Priest. En el último álbum, “Face This Burn”, hicimos la canción “The River”, que también formaba parte del álbum “Toxic Rain” lanzado en 1998. La canción “Live To Die” trata sobre una historia de amor que se volvió tóxica debido a unas creencias extremas de la pareja en las supersticiones. La canción fue inspirada por alguien que conocíamos que era extremadamente supersticioso y terminó arruinando sus vidas.

MiM: Entre 2003 y 2021 hubo un impasse discográfico enorme. ¿Qué pasó en todo ese tiempo? ¿Cómo fue volver al estudio de grabación?

HM: Entre 2003 y 2021. Simplemente, decidí no dedicarme a la Santa Madre por un tiempo. Estaba muy ocupado haciendo otros proyectos musicales; uno, como ya sabrás, es el beso del Mesías. Lancé cuatro álbumes con ellos e hice algunas giras. También hice algunas giras con la banda Riot cuando Mark Reale estaba en la banda. Y en 2010 apenas estaba superando mi diagnóstico de cáncer de estómago. También estuve en un show en Las Vegas llamado Rockstar donde interpreté a David Coverdale. El espectáculo fue en el casino del hotel Planet Hollywood. Hice eso durante aproximadamente un año hasta que terminó el programa. También toco en una banda nupcial/corporativa de ocho integrantes llamada Entourage, que también me mantuvo muy ocupada. Pero luego, en 2021, supe que era hora de traer de vuelta a la Santa Madre.

MiM: Excelente diseño de portada del álbum. ¿De quién estaba a cargo? ¿Cuál es el concepto detrás del diseño de la portada?

HM: El nuevo guitarrista, Mickey Lyxx y su padre Michael Lussos diseñaron la portada. Es una oda al nombre de la banda, pero con un aire romano, que se remonta al 30 a. C. con el surgimiento del Imperio Romano y se centra específicamente en la conquista de los antiguos egipcios. La Mujer se mostró practicando la Oración Politeísta, un tributo a los muchos dioses por el éxito de su Imperio. “The Inside Carrying” un “Egyptian Theme” que refleja la caída del Imperio egipcio debido a las manos de los romanos. Debe sentirse como si hubiera encontrado un artefacto antiguo dentro del corazón de El Cairo... si ese artefacto ¡Era metal pesado!

MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo en la banda a la hora de componer, estructurar y decidir qué canciones o composiciones formarán parte de un álbum? ¿Es un proceso colaborativo entre todos o recae en una o dos personas?

HM: Es fantástico poder finalmente volver al estudio, que es el estudio que tengo. Siempre he estado escribiendo canciones, pero quiero llevar a Holy Mother en una dirección ligeramente diferente junto con el baterista Jim Harris. Escribimos las canciones juntos. Tocaba todas las guitarras y el bajo y escribía la mayor parte de la estructura de las canciones y las melodías, y Jim Harris escribía muchas o la mayoría de las letras de mis melodías vocales. También me ayudaba a arreglar las canciones. Pero como sabemos, y se ha publicado en las redes sociales, Jim Harris ya no está en la banda. Pero sigo escribiendo canciones casi todos los días, así que siempre estoy listo para sacar el próximo álbum cuando sea necesario.

MiM: Son una banda que se forma desde hace varios años, con álbumes y muchos conciertos en su carrera. Mirando hacia atrás, ¿cómo calificarías el trabajo de la banda todos estos años?

Y creo que estos dos álbumes recientes, “Face This Burn” y especialmente el nuevo álbum “Rise”, nos harán notar mucho. Junto con todas las giras y festivales que estaremos haciendo. Acabamos de terminar una exitosa gira en marzo con Doro. Todos los espectáculos estaban agotados. Y estaremos de gira con ella nuevamente en diciembre.

MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum? ¿Conciertos o giras programadas para este año?

HM: Hasta ahora, vamos a dar un espectáculo aquí en la ciudad de Nueva York el 18 de mayo en el Sony Hall. También tenemos un show en Francia en el Barbeuk Metal Festival el 23 de agosto, y otro show en Francia al día siguiente. Y como dije antes, estaremos de gira con Doro en diciembre. También estamos planeando otros shows para promocionar realmente este nuevo álbum. El álbum se lanza oficialmente el 7 de junio y eso nos brindará más oportunidades para tocar en shows y promocionar el nuevo álbum.

North American veterans, Holy Mother present the follow-up to “Face This Burn” and their seventh studio album:  'Rise', which will be released on June 7 via Massacre Records.

MiM: “Rise” (Massacre Records, 2024) has an energetic, powerful sound, with a lot of strength. Hard Rock in its purest form. What can you tell me about this album?

HM: What can I tell you about our new album, “Rise”? I can honestly say that we really found our style on this new album. Lots of heavy riffs, lots of catchy melodic choruses and Ronnie James Dio influenced vocals. I really wanted to write this album focusing on the European and American hard rock/heavy metal styles. I think we accomplished that on this new album.

MiM: In “Rise” a marked influence of Ronnie James Dio is felt. Heavy hard rock but with catchy and melodic riffs. Is that so? How do you see it?

HM: Yes, definitely the album “RISE” vocally is very influenced by Ronnie James Dio, but of course with our style musically. As I mentioned before, I wanted to appeal to the European market as well as the American market, but there’s certainly various songs on this album to appease the hard rock/metal fans.

MiM: In the first single released from this album “Fire” the voice of Violet Tirelli, daughter of Mike Tirelli, is heard at the beginning. How did the idea come about? How has the public's reception of the single been so far?

HM: In the first single “Fire”, you can hear the voice of my daughter, Violet Tirelli, at the beginning of the song. It totally inspired me to write a vocal melody after she sang her three part harmonies at the beginning of the song. She gave the song a very eerie feeling, which gave me the inspiration to write something as intense as the song FIRE is. So far, we are really blown away by the fans' reaction to the first single and the video. And that should definitely set us up for our June 7th full album release. Which comes out on vinyl and digipack CD.

MiM: This album has several guests who contribute and add a lot to the album in general. How did the idea come about?

HM: Well, some guests on this new album were, as you know, my daughter, Violet Tirelli.  Furthermore, on the song “Live To Die” Richie Naso played rhythm guitar. He was the guitar player on the original release in 1998 off the Toxic Rain album.  I also had Jason Banks play some rhythm guitars and overdubs.  On The song “RAIN” I had a fellow bandmate Rob Moringino play some keyboards. Rob is from another band that I play with here in New York called Entourage.

MiM: “Live To Die” is one of the fastest songs on the album and apparently is a statement of the band's principles. Is that so? What is the song about lyrically?

HM: Yes, the song “Live to Die” goes back to one of our first albums that we recorded. It’s a more traditional, heavy metal power metal song, but we always want to play that live for some of our very loyal Holy Mother fans that still come out and see us when we tour. It goes over well and is definitely one of my favorite songs to sing live.  That’s why I wanted to put that song on the new album. To show people that we still live by our roots, just like Black Sabbath, Dio, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest. On the last album, “Face This Burn” we did the song “The River”, which was also off the album “Toxic Rain” released in 1998. The song “Live To Die” is about a love affair gone toxic because of one partner’s extreme beliefs in superstitions. The song was inspired by someone that we knew that was extremely superstitious and ended up ruining their lives.

MiM: Between 2003 and 2021 there was a huge recording impasse. What happened in all that time? What was it like going back to the recording studio?

HM: Between 2003 and 2021. I just decided not to pursue Holy Mother for a while. I was very busy doing other musical projects; one, as you might know, is Messiahs kiss.  I released four albums with them and did some touring. I also did some touring with the band Riot when Mark Reale was in the band. And in 2010 I was just getting over my diagnosis of stomach cancer. I was also in a show in Las Vegas called Rockstar where I played David Coverdale. The show was at the Planet Hollywood hotel casino. I did that for about one year until the show ended. I also play in an eight piece wedding/corporate band called Entourage, which kept me extremely busy as well. But then in 2021, I knew it was time to finally bring back Holy Mother.

MiM: Excellent album cover design. Who was he in charge of? What is the concept behind the cover design?

HM: The new Guitar Player, Mickey Lyxx and his father Michael Lussos designed the new album cover. The cover is an ode to the band’s name but in a Roman feel, dating back to 30 BC with the rise of the Roman Empire and specifically focusing on the conquest of the Ancient Egyptians. The Woman showed practicing Polytheistic Prayer, a tribute to the many gods for success for her Empire. "The inside carrying" an “Egyptian Theme” reflecting on the fall of the Egyptian Empire due to the hands of the Romans, It is meant to feel as if you have found an ancient artifact within the Heart of Cairo…..if that artifact was heavy metal!

MiM: How does the creative process go in the band when it comes to composing, structuring and deciding which songs or compositions will be part of an album? Is it a collaborative process between everyone or does it fall to one or two people?

HM: It is great to finally get back into the studio, which is my studio that I own. I’ve always been writing songs forever, but I want to take Holy Mother in a slightly different direction along with Drummer Jim Harris. We write the songs together. I would play all the guitars and bass and write most of the song structure and melodies, and Jim Harris would write a lot or most of the lyrics to my vocal melodies. He would also help me arrange the songs. But as we know, and it has been posted on social media, that Jim Harris is no longer in the band. But I'm still writing songs just about every day, so I am always ready to put out the next album when it needs to be.

MiM: You are a band that has been formed for several years, with albums and many concerts in their career. Looking back, how would you rate the band's work all these years?

HM: Looking back on Holy Mother’s history and some live shows, I would say the earlier albums like Toxic Rain, Criminal Afterlife, My World War and Agoraphobia are good records. Especially the well-received Toxic Rain album. But I strongly believe if the band did not take that 18 year hiatus that the band would be a lot bigger than it is right now. It feels like the band had to almost start all over again. But these latest albums from 2021 to now are definitely our best work. And I believe these two recent albums, “Face This Burn” and especially the new album “RISE” are going to get us extremely noticed. Along with all the touring and festivals that we will be doing. We just finished a successful tour in March with Doro. All the shows were sold out. And we will be going on tour with her again in December.

MiM: What plans do you have to promote this album? Concerts or tours scheduled this year?

HM: So far, we are playing a show here in New York City on May 18 at Sony Hall. We also have a show in France at the Barbeuk Metal Festival on August 23, and another show in France the next day.  And like I said before, we will be touring with Doro in December. We are also planning other shows to really promote this new album. The album is officially released on June 7, and that will bring us more opportunities to play shows and to promote the new album.
