Las leyendas del Thrash Metal Flotsam and Jetsam, con sede en Phoenix, Arizona, lanzaron su nuevo álbum “I Am The Weapon”, el 13 de septiembre, bajo el prestigioso sello discográfico AFM Records. MiM: El último álbum fue “Blood in the Water” (2021). ¿Cómo fue volver al estudio después de casi tres años?

Ken Mary: Estábamos felices de volver a escribir y grabar. Como mencionaste, había pasado un tiempo y teníamos muchas, muchas ideas de canciones para analizar.

MiM: En los últimos tres años, ¿qué ha pasado con la banda?

Ken Mary: Bueno, el covid-19 se llevó dos de esos años e hizo que las giras fueran bastante difíciles. Los últimos dos años hemos estado de gira y, por supuesto, grabando el nuevo álbum, que fue un proceso de aproximadamente 8 meses. Hicimos muchas giras esta primavera y verano, incluyendo por Estados Unidos, parte de Canadá, Brasil y festivales de verano en Europa.

MiM: “I Am the Weapon” (AFM Records, 2024) es un álbum con un sonido rápido y fuerte de riffs de guitarra pegadizos y bien definidos. ¡Un sonido sorprendente, solos de guitarra nítidos y épicos! ¿Qué me puedes contar sobre este álbum?

AK: Disfrutamos escribiéndolo y grabándolo. Fue un momento un poco mejor que durante la covid-19, cuando escribimos y grabamos el álbum “Blood in the Water”. Nos divertimos más grabando este.

MiM: ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción?

Ken Mary: Tomamos ideas para la música de los guitarristas, Steve y Michael, y luego AK y yo hacemos demostraciones de ideas en torno a esa música y vemos qué se mantiene. A veces trabajamos juntos en letras y melodías, y a veces las ideas individuales son lo suficientemente fuertes por sí solas. Bill también es un gran compositor; simplemente nos quedamos sin tiempo antes de poder llegar a dos de sus piezas musicales en este disco.

MiM: En “I Am the Weapon”, siento una marcada influencia del power metal en algunas de sus canciones. ¿Es así? ¿Qué me puedes contar al respecto?

AK: Realmente no nos importan mucho las etiquetas. Nuestra idea es hacer música que nos guste mucho y que nos encantaría tocar en vivo. Intentamos crear canciones que se queden en tu cerebro, ya que nuestro objetivo es tomar el control total del cerebro de todos (risas). Pero en serio, nos gusta crear canciones que tengan un gancho para que la gente pueda cantar. Si eso lo convierte en “power metal”, que así sea. No estamos haciendo ningún esfuerzo por hacer nada más que hacer música con la que estemos contentos y que nos gustaría tocar. Las etiquetas son para que cada uno decida.

MiM: En este álbum, es muy notable lo bueno que es Eric “AK” Knutson como vocalista, lo que sugiere fuertemente que está en excelentes condiciones. ¿Cómo crees que logra mantener esa fuerza en su voz?

Ken Mary: La voz de AK, en mi opinión, es una de las mejores del metal, punto. Parece tener un régimen saludable de Jack Daniel’s y fumar para obtener su increíble tono.

MiM: ¿Cómo crees que ha evolucionado el sonido de Flotsam and Jetsam desde el lanzamiento del álbum “Doomsday for the Deceiver” hasta “I Am the Weapon”?

MiM: ¿Cómo crees que han cambiado los objetivos y la visión de la banda en las más de tres décadas desde su creación?

AK: El negocio de la música en sí ha cambiado mucho, creo que cambia tus objetivos hasta cierto punto. Intentamos constantemente superarnos, mejorar cada vez más como músicos, escribir cada vez mejores canciones y ofrecer cada vez mejores espectáculos. Cuando eres joven, puedes tomarte un tiempo para festejar y no tomarte las cosas tan en serio. Lo que hacemos ahora, lo hacemos con un sentido de urgencia y un sentido del tiempo como factores. Queremos ser lo mejor que podamos ser. Son una banda que se ha formado durante varios años, con álbumes y muchos conciertos en su carrera.

MiM: Mirando hacia atrás. ¿Cómo calificarías el trabajo de la banda durante todos estos años?

AK: Sentimos que nuestro trabajo ha sido muy fuerte a lo largo de las décadas. Hemos experimentado con nuestro sonido en ocasiones, y nuestro público pareció quedarse con nosotros, así que estamos muy agradecidos por eso. Thrash Metal legends Flotsam And Jetsam, based in Phoenix, Arizona, released their new album “I Am The Weapon,” on September 13th, under the prestigious record label, AFM Records. This is an excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to talk to the band about everything related to this release.

MiM: The last album was “Blood in the Water” (2021). What was it like to return to the studio after almost three years?

Ken Mary: We were happy to get back to writing and recording. As you mentioned, it had been awhile, and we had many, many song ideas to sift through.

MiM: In the past three years, what has happened to the band?

Ken Mary: Well, Covid-19 took up two of those years and made touring quite difficult. The last two years we have been touring and, of course, recording the new album, which was about an 8-month process. We toured a great deal this spring and summer, including the US, part of Canada, Brazil, and summer festivals in Europe.

MiM: “I Am the Weapon” (AFM Records, 2024) is an album with a fast and strong sound of catchy and well-defined guitar riffs. Surprising sound, sharp, and epic guitar solos!! What can you tell me about this album?

AK: We enjoyed writing and recording it. It was a bit better of a time than during Covid-19, when we wrote and recorded the “Blood in the Water” album. We had more fun recording this one.

MiM: What was the recording and production process like?

Ken Mary: We take ideas for the music from the guitar players, Steve and Michael, and then AK and I will demo ideas around that music and see what sticks. Sometimes we work together on lyrics and melodies, and sometimes the individual ideas are strong enough on their own. Bill is also a great writer; we just ran out of time before we could get to two of his musical pieces on this record.

MiM: In “I Am the Weapon,” I feel a marked influence of power metal in some of its songs. Is that so? What can you tell me about it?

AK: We don’t really care much for labels. Our idea is to make music that we feel strongly about and that we would love to play live. We do try to create songs that stick inside your brain, as it is our goal to take full control of everyone’s brain. But seriously, we do like to create songs that have a hook that people can sing along with. If that makes it “power metal,” then so be it. We are making no effort to do anything apart from make music that we are happy with and that we would like to perform. Labels are for everyone else to decide.

MiM: On this album, it is very notable how good Eric “AK” Knutson is as a vocalist, it strongly suggests that he is in excellent condition. How do you think he manages to maintain that strength in his voice?

Ken Mary: AK’s voice, IMO, is one of the best in metal, period. He seems to have a healthy regimen of Jack Daniel's and smoking to get his incredible tone.

MiM: How do you think Flotsam and Jetsam's sound has evolved from the release of the album “Doomsday for the Deceiver” to “I Am the Weapon”?

AK: That’s a tough question on many levels. Much time has gone by, but the energy level and aggression of the band is still very much the same.

Ken Mary: There are differences, to be certain, but the elements that make a Flotsam record a Flotsam record seem to be threaded through every era and album. The consistency of AK as the singer helps this to a great degree as well.

MiM: This year marks the XXXVIII anniversary of the album “Doomsday for the Deceiver” (1986). Any plans to celebrate this anniversary? 

AK: There are rumors of a remastered product, but we’ll see if this happens. We certainly have played some shows focused on material from that record at the request of some promoters. We will continue to do that when requested.

MiM: How was the band's experience at Wacken Open Air? How did the public receive them?

Ken Mary: The reception was great, and don’t forget we played Wacken back in 2017 as well, so this is not entirely new to us. We had a great time as well, and we hope to play there again!

MiM: How do you think the band's goals and vision have changed in the more than three decades since the band's inception? 

AK: The music business itself has changed so much, I think it changes your goals to some degree. We are constantly trying to push ourselves to the next level, get better and better as musicians, write better and better songs, and deliver better and better shows. When you’re young, you can take some time to party and not take things as seriously. What we do now, we do with a sense of urgency and a sense of time as factors. We want to be the very best we can be. They are a band that has been formed for several years, with albums and many concerts in their career.

MiM: Looking back, how would you rate the band's work all these years?

AK: We feel our work has been very strong over the decades. We have experimented with our sound at times, and our audience seemed to stay with us, so we are very thankful for that. We hope that the people agree with our assessment. The bottom line is we have always done our best to make great albums and deliver great live performances. We know that all we are doing depends on the fans, so we always respect that.

MiM: What plans do you have to promote this album? 

Ken Mary: We have been touring much of this year already, and we have some things that are in the works now. We play on the 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise in January, and we have tentative touring in the early spring, but we cannot say what until the deal is done.

MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers?
