“La inspiración básica es el power metal de los 2000”

La banda sueca de power metal Mad Hatter lanzó su nuevo álbum “Oneironautics” el 24 de mayo, bajo el prestigioso sello discográfico español Art Gates Records. Esta es una excelente oportunidad para que Made in Metal hable con su cantante, Peter Hjerpe, para saber todo sobre este lanzamiento.

MiM: ¿Cómo surgió la idea de crear la banda? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de fichaje con Art Gates Records?

PH: Es básicamente un nuevo comienzo para nuestra antigua banda, Morning Dwell. El antiguo sello estaba “cerrando”, y para no complicar las cosas, decidimos hacer algo nuevo. Es realmente difícil hacerse notar como una banda nueva, ya que hay tantas buenas bandas por ahí. Pero parte de ello es culpa nuestra. No nos hemos centrado tanto en promocionar o tocar en directo. AGR era el sello perfecto para nosotros. Creyeron en nuestra música y también apoyaron nuestro objetivo con la banda, que estaba más centrado en el estudio/proyecto que en una banda en directo. Creo que les envié una demo en 2017/18, y luego hicimos un trato que nos gustó a ambos.

MiM: “Oneironautics” (Art Gates Records, 2024) es un álbum con un sonido sorprendente. La mezcla vocal está perfectamente equilibrada, con solos de guitarra pegadizos y una base compacta de bajo y batería. ¿Qué me puedes contar sobre este álbum?

PH: ¡Gracias! Trabajamos en este álbum sin una fecha de lanzamiento en mente. Así que creo que pudimos escribir canciones y grabar sin presión. Samuel (teclados) y yo escribimos juntos, y Samuel es muy hábil. Así que la mezcla de su musicalidad y mi pasión por el conocimiento del power metal fue una buena combinación. La mezcla la hizo Jani Stefanovic, y nos dio totalmente el sonido que buscábamos.

MiM: ¡Tienes una voz impresionante! Me siento muy cerca de grandes voces como Andi Deris y Michael Kiske. ¿Tienes formación académica o es empírica?

PH: ¡Oh! ¡Muchas gracias! ¡No puedo obtener una mejor reseña que esa! No, solo he estado cantando en casa solo. Cuando grabas voces, practicas mucho. Realmente puedes escuchar cuando suena mal (o bien).

MiM: Mad Hatter es claramente una banda con un futuro por delante. La profesionalidad y el enfoque de la banda son más que latentes. ¿Dónde te ves en cinco años?

PH: De hecho, hemos comenzado a discutir las opciones para tocar en vivo. Pero también toco en Majestica y ese es mi enfoque principal ahora. Pero el objetivo dentro de cinco años es haber lanzado más música y al menos haber tocado en vivo más de una vez.

MiM: El sonido de la banda navega entre el power metal y el heavy metal. ¿Cuáles son tus principales influencias? ¿Cómo intentas incluir elementos personales al crear música?

PH: La inspiración básica es el power metal de los 2000. Sin embargo, también hay algo de Judas Priest y bandas más impulsadas por la guitarra como ellos. También nos inspiramos en los videojuegos. Escucha “The Witches of Blue Hill”. Las progresiones de acordes están inspiradas en un juego de Zelda, por ejemplo. 

PH: El siguiente paso que tenemos en mente es empezar a ensayar más juntos. Pero como he dicho antes, Majestica ocupa la mayor parte de mi tiempo. Sin embargo, nuestro objetivo es empezar y si nos va bien, valoraremos tocar en algunos conciertos el año que viene.

The Swedish power metal band Mad Hatter released their new album “Oneironautics” on May 24, under the prestigious Spanish record label Art Gates Records. This is an excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to talk to his singer, Peter Hjerpe, to find out everything about this release.

MiM: How did the idea to create the band come about? What was the signing process like with Art Gates Records?

PH: It’s basically a new start for our older band, Morning Dwell. The old label was “closing,” and to not make things complicated, we decided to make something new. It’s really hard to get noticed as a new band since there are so many good bands out there. But part of it is our fault. We haven’t focused so much on promoting or playing live. AGR was the perfect label for us. They believed in our music and also supported our goal with the band, which was more studio/project focused than a live band. I think I sent them a demo back in 2017/18, and then we made a deal that we both liked.

MiM: “Oneironautics” (Art Gates Records, 2024) is an album with a surprising sound. The vocal mix is perfectly balanced, with catchy guitar solos and a compact bass and drum base. What can you tell me about this album?

PH: Thank you! We worked on this album without a release date in mind. So I think we could write songs and record without pressure. Samuel(keyboards) and I wrote together, and Samuel is very skilled. So the mix of his musicality and my passion for knowledge of power metal was a good blend. The mix is done by Jani Stefanovic, and he totally gave us the sound we were looking for.

MiM: You have an impressive voice! I feel very close to great voices like Andi Deris and Michael Kiske. Do you have academic training, or is it empirical?

PH: Oh! Thank you so much! I can’t get a better review than that! No, I have just been singing at home by myself. When you record vocals, you get a lot of practice. You can really hear when it sounds bad (or good).

MiM: Mad Hatter is clearly a band with a future ahead of them. The band's professionalism and focus are more than latent. Where do you see yourself in five years?

PH: We have actually started discussing the options for playing live. But I also play in Majestica and that is my prior focus now. But the goal within five years is to have released more music and at least played live more than once.

MiM: The band's sound navigates between power metal and heavy metal. What are your main influences? How do you try to include personal elements when creating music?

PH: The basic inspiration is the 00s power metal. However, there are also some Judas Priest and more guitar-driven bands like them. We also take inspiration from video games. Listen to “The Witches of Blue Hill”. The chord progressions are inspired by a Zelda game, for example. 

PH: The next step we have in mind is start rehearsing more together. But as I said before, Majestica takes most of my time. But we are aiming at starting and if we get a good flow we will start looking at some gigs next year.
