No todos los días me quedo sin palabras cuando trato de narrar una actuación en vivo. Pero no me malinterpreten, esto no es un caso de bloqueo de escritor. Es simplemente que me encuentro en desacuerdo cuando se trata de describir cómo es un concierto de Dirty Honey, ya que lo he hecho en el pasado varias veces, lo mejor que puedo, y cada palabra que escribí en esas ocasiones se puede reiterar hoy, y algo más.
La primera vez que vi tocar a la banda fue en octubre de 2019; y mientras documentaba el concierto al día siguiente, escribí: “…Dirty Honey NO son otra banda de revival de hard rock común y corriente, y NO están en una misión inútil para salvar el rock n’ roll. Simplemente patean traseros y son una banda a seguir de cerca: estos chicos están destinados a las grandes ligas…” Bueno, esas palabras suenan proféticas hoy en día, mientras el cuarteto continúa su meteórico ascenso al estrellato del rock n’ roll. Y antes de que pienses que estoy sonando como un fanático común, déjame aclarar: no lo soy.
Me considero un devoto de la música bien escrita e interpretada, sea hard rock, metal, fusión; el género realmente no importa, como mi colección personal de música puede atestiguar. Y para mi deleite, y el disfrute de la audiencia un tanto modesta que se reunió en Hard Rock Live Orlando el domingo pasado, eso es exactamente lo que ofrece Dirty Honey, una y otra vez: sin lujos, con las pelotas contra la pared, tiene un rock duro puro, rebosante de arrogancia y gusto, voces robustas y conmovedoras, solos de guitarra fluidos y una sección rítmica de bajo y batería rugiente, todo ello exquisitamente adornado con un amplio nivel de confianza y competencia musical, una combinación que sin duda recuerda el apogeo de algunos otros consumados rockeros de la vieja escuela.
La presentación fue parte de la gira Young Guns, que primero se reprogramó debido a las incertidumbres de la pandemia, y luego se vio afectada por la ausencia de la banda de Wolfgang Van Halen, Mammoth WVH, quienes co-encabezaron la gira, como algunos casos de Covid-19 que los obligaron a cancelar su aparición en los últimos seis shows. Dirty Honey siguió adelante y, a pesar de la afluencia de asistentes al concierto del domingo por la noche, los cuatro jóvenes músicos tocaron con la misma energía y entusiasmo como si fueran los mejores en un estadio. Si te gustan bandas como Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, The Black Crowes (para las que abrieron recientemente) o incluso Greta Van Fleet y no estás familiarizado con Dirty Honey, debes corregir esa omisión lo antes posible. Pero incluso si ninguna de las bandas antes mencionadas está en tu timonera, te animo a que le des una oportunidad a Dirty Honey, ya que NO SON una banda que imita el sonido de los grandes del género, sino que toman elementos del ADN de esa música para tejer juntos el suyo con composiciones auténticas y geniales. No pueden ser la única banda sin firmar en la historia en conseguir una posición # 1 en la lista Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay por pura suerte, ¿no crees?
La selección de canciones estuvo muy bien equilibrada, comenzando con su último gran éxito, "California Dreaming", pasando por "Break You", con los correspondientes gemidos finales de Marc LaBelle que me provocaron escalofríos y me recordaron una vez más al gran Chris Cornell, y también presentaron temas básicos de su repertorio como “The Wire”, “Scars” y “Gypsy”. Añadiendo un nivel adicional de frescura, LaBelle se dirigió a la audiencia y confirmó la presencia de amigos y familiares entre la multitud, expresando cuánto les gusta tocar en Florida por ese hecho, y presentó al padre de JohnNotto mientras decía que su madre también estaba presente.
Sin miedo a poner su toque personal en lo que muchos podrían considerar una elección extraña, nos ofrecieron una interpretación infundida de blues de "Let's Go Crazy" de Prince que, además de obtener una reacción unánime absoluta, también demostró que estos jóvenes son a partes iguales rockeros pisando fuerte, y sus raíces están arraigadas en la historia del blues rock. Hacia el final de la noche, cada instrumentista participó en un breve segmento destacado, acentuado por la breve adición de Notto de la parte inicial de "Ten Years Gone" de Zeppelin a su solo de guitarra, justo antes de saltar a una interpretación de AC/DC de buen gusto y desgarradora. “Shoot to Thrill” que enloqueció aún más a la multitud que vitoreaba. El doble golpe de “When I'm Gone” y los sempiternos “Rolling 7's” –acompañados de un canto colectivo– cerraron el acto, dejándome de nuevo con la sensación de que el Padre Tiempo me había engañado y en realidad no tocaron un set-list de dieciséis canciones. Una ovación ensordecedora resonó durante varios minutos mientras avanzaban y se despedían.
Y aquí estoy, una vez más haciendo todo lo posible para resumir el espectáculo de la noche y hacer justicia a lo que vi. Por lo tanto, intentemos algo diferente esta vez: estoy seguro que has oído la vieja y gastada afirmación de que el rock and roll está muerto, ¿no es así? Bueno, si quieres llamar a eso una mierda, Dirty Honey es tu mejor as. Rebosantes del carisma del rock de los 70 y los 80 vestido con un toque moderno, irradiando talento, personalidad y suficientes habilidades para hacer palidecer a los músicos experimentados, estos cuatro muchachos bien podrían ser la banda más grande en la escena del rock duro del planeta en cuestión de años. CONCERT REVIEW: DIRTY HONEY Brings the YOUNG GUNS Tour to Orlando, Serving Up a Night of Splendid Bluesy Hard Rock
It’s not every day that I find myself at loss for words when trying to chronicle a live performance. But don’t get me wrong, this is not an occurrence of writer’s block. It’s merely that I am finding myself at odds when it comes to describe what a Dirty Honey show looks like, as I’ve done that in the past several times – to the best of my abilities – and every single word I wrote in those occasions remain true today, and then some.
The first time I saw the band playing was back in October of 2019; and while documenting the show the day after, I wrote: “…Dirty Honey are NOT another run of the mill hard rock revival band, and they are NOT in a futile mission to save rock n’ roll. They simply kick ass and they are a band to follow closely: these kids are destined to the big leagues…” Well, those words sort of sound prophetic nowadays, as the quartet continues their meteoric rise to rock n’ roll stardom. And before you think I’m sounding like a common fanboy, let me clarify: I’m not.
I consider myself a devotee of well-composed and performed music, being hard rock, metal, fusion, the genre doesn’t really matter, as my personal music collection can attest. And to my delight – and the enjoyment of the somewhat modest audience that gathered at Hard Rock Live Orlando this past Sunday, that’s exactly what Dirty Honey serves up – time and time again: no-frills, balls-to-the-wall, no-holds-barred hard-rock, overflowing with swagger and gusto, robust and soulful vocals, fluid guitar solos and a roaring bass and drums rhythm section, all of that exquisitely decked with a broad level of confidence and musical proficiency, a combination that certainly reminds me of the heyday of some others consummate of old-school rockers.
The presentation was part of the Young Guns tour, which was first re-scheduled due to the uncertainties of the pandemic, and later suffered from the absence of Wolfgang Van Halen’s band Mammoth WVH who were co-headlining the trek, as some Covid-19 cases in their tour camp forced them to cancel their appearance for the last six shows. Dirty Honey pressed on, and despite the affluence of concertgoers on Sunday night didn’t present them with a full house, the four young musicians played with the same energy and enthusiasm as if they were the top act in an arena bill. If you like bands like Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, The Black Crowes (for which they recently opened), or even Greta Van Fleet and you are unfamiliar with Dirty Honey, well you need to correct that omission as soon as possible. But even if none of the aforementioned bands are in your wheelhouse, I encourage you to give Dirty Honey a chance, as they ARE NOT a band that mimics the sound of the genre greats but takes elements of that music’s DNA to weave together their own authentic and kick-ass compositions. They can’t be the only unsigned band in history to land a # 1 Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay chart position out of pure luck, don’t you think?
The song selection was very well balanced, starting with their latest smashing hit “California Dreaming,” passing by “Break You” – with the pertaining final wailing from Marc LaBelle that sent shivers down my spine and reminded me of the great Chris Cornell once again – and also featuring staple tracks from their repertoire like “The Wire,”“Scars” and “Gypsy.” Adding an extra level of coolness, LaBelle addressed the audience and confirmed the presence of friends and family among the crowd, expressing how much they like to play in Florida due to that fact, and introducing JohnNotto’s father while saying his mother was also in attendance. Not afraid of putting their personal touch in what many could consider an oddball choice, we were given a blues-infused performance of Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” which besides getting an absolute unanimous reaction also proved these youngsters are equal parts, foot-stomping rockers, as their roots are entrenched in the blues-rock history. Towards the end of the night each instrumentalist engaged in a brief spotlight segment, accentuated by Notto brief addition of the initial portion of Zeppelin’s “Ten Years Gone” to his guitar solo, just before they jumped into a tasteful and ripping rendition of AC/DC’s “Shoot to Thrill” that drove the cheering crowd even wilder. The double punch of “When I’m Gone,” and the sempiternal “Rolling 7’s” – accompanied by a collective singalong – closed the proceedings, leaving me once again with the sensation that Father Time had tricked me and they haven’t actually played a 16-songs long set-list. A deafening ovation resounded for several minutes as they came forward and wave goodbye.
And here I am, once again doing my best to summarize the night’s spectacle and do justice to what I saw. Therefore, let’s try something different this time around: I’m sure you’ve heard the old and worn-out assertion that rock n’ roll is dead, haven’t you? Well, if you want to call that bullshit, Dirty Honey is your best ace. Oozing 70’s and 80’s rock charisma dressed with a modern twist, radiating talent, personality, and enough chops to make seasoned players pale, these four guys might as well be the biggest band in the planet's hard rock scene in a matter of years. Mark my words.
