Jo Henning, guitarrista y alma de Come Taste the Band, habla con Tony González acerca de la historia de la banda y el éxito de su más reciente disco, 'Reignition'. 

MiM - Hola Jo, ¿Cómo estás?

CTTB – Muy bien, gracias. El disco “Reignition” es un gran éxito para Come Taste the Band, con buenas ventas y reseñas fantásticas que nos llegan de todo el mundo. Estamos muy satisfechos con el disco. Nos sentimos muy bien con todo esto.

MiM – La banda ha tardado más de veinte años en grabar su propia música. ¿Por qué se decidieron hacerlo precisamente ahora?

CTTB – Bueno, nos pareció que ahora era el momento. Teníamos el material, teníamos el contrato con AOR Heaven y teníamos dos cantantes de talla mundial. Escribir canciones es todo un aliciente cuando sabes que Doogie White y Joe Lynn Turner las van a cantar.  ¡Es algo muy especial! A mí personalmente me gusta crear nuevas ideas dentro del rock. Resulta muy satisfactorio ser capaz de escribir nuevas canciones en el espíritu del viejo Rock´n´Roll de toda la vida.

MiM – Antes de escribir tu propio material, la banda decidió sacar dos discos tocando la música de Deep Purple, ¿por qué?

CTTB - Come Taste the Band comenzó como una banda tributo a Deep Purple. Hacer estos discos era una manera de mostrar a la audiencia quienes éramos. Y nos fue bien, porque pienso que Glenn Hughes escuchó uno de los discos, le gustó, y así comenzó nuestra asociación en el 2007.

MiM - ¿En aquel tiempo, escribían o tocaban música propia?

CTTB – Siempre he estado componiendo, pero nos concentramos en tocar canciones de Deep Purple, por lo que no grabamos nada propio hasta 2013, cuando Ståle Naas (bajista de CTTB) y yo escribimos “Tied Down” con Joe Lynn Turner.

MiM – La banda estuvo tocando con Glenn Hughes entre 2007 y 2010. ¿Estuvieron de gira por el mundo con Glenn o solo por Europa? ¿Para esta gira la banda mantuvo su nombre? 

CTTB – Estuvimos girando por Escandinavia bajo el nombre de Glenn Hughes & Come Taste the Band. Fue muy divertido hacer estas giras, era casi como estar metidos dentro del “Burn”. Tocábamos las canciones con mucha improvisación al estilo del “California Jam”

MiM –¿Recuerdas que canciones tocaron durante esta gira?

CTTB – Las canciones que tocábamos fueron: “Stormbringer”, “Might Just Take Your Life”, “Sail Away”, “Love Child”, “Mistreated”, “Getting Tighter”, “You Fool No One”, “You Keep On Moving”. Para los bises “Soul Mover” y “Burn”. A veces tocamos “Holy Man” y “What`s Goin on Here”.

MiM - ¿Cómo fue la experiencia de Glenn Hughes?

CTTB - ¡Fue fantástica! Es un gran músico con mucha energía. Y lo aprecio mucho. Como te decía, hubo montones de improvisaciones y Glenn nos enseñó a tocar siempre en directo como si fuera el último día de nuestras vidas. El listado de canciones fue bastante similar cada noche, pero aun así sonaba fresco y diferente en cada concierto. Fue algo que me agrado mucho.

MiM – En el 2011 la banda se unió a otro miembro de Deep Purple,  Joe Lynn Turner. ¿Fue para tocar canciones de Deep Purple o hicieron canciones de otras bandas donde Turner tocó?

CTTB – Tocábamos canciones de los tres discos que Joe hizo con Rainbow y canciones del “Slaves and Masters” así como algunos clásicos como “Highway Star” y “Pictures of Home”.

MiM - ¿Fue una buena experiencia la de tocar con Joe Lynn Turner? ¿Tienes alguna anécdota de esta gira que te gustaría compartir con nosotros?

CTTB – Fue una experiencia muy buena. Me gusta mucho como canta Joe. El ha sido una especie de mentor para mí y CTTB y es un cantante y compositor increíble. ¡Y las conversaciones! Durante las cenas nos pasábamos horas hablando de todo.  Me siento agradecido por haber podido trabajar con él en los estudios y los directos. Cuando tocamos en el primer ensayo, lo que hicimos fue “Pictures of Home”, y después que terminamos la canción  nos dijo: “Chicos, ustedes tocan mejor que Deep Purple y se los dice alguien que ha tocado con ellos” Todos sonreímos y esta declaración fue como un chispazo de auto confianza para nosotros. 

MiM - Ståle Naas y tu escribieron dos canciones con JLT: “Tied Down” y “Don`t Let Me Bleed!” ¿En estos momentos tocarán estas canciones?

CTTB - No, creo que no. Pero esperamos tener la oportunidad de tocar estas canciones con Joe el algún festival este verano.

MiM - ¿Ha estado la banda involucrada con otros miembros de Deep Purple / Rainbow o Whitesnake antes de grabar este CD?

CTTB - Si. Hemos trabajado con Glenn Hughes, Joe Lynn Turner, Doogie White, Graham Bonnet y Bernie Marsden. ¡Somos muy afortunados!

MiM – “Reignition” incluye siete canciones cantadas por Doogie White. ¿Cómo lo convencieron para unirse a la banda?

CTTB – Hicimos algunos conciertos juntos y nos fue muy bien. Doogie es un gran vocalista y una persona muy agradable. Entonces le pregunté si le gustaría escribir algunas composiciones conmigo. Le envié algunas canciones y parece que le gustó la manera que tengo de componer. ¡Hemos hecho una buena amistad! Me gusta mucho la manera en que canta en “Reignition”. ¡Muy inspirador! El vino a vernos a Oslo y cantó todas las canciones en solo dos días. Fue fantástico trabajar así: Rápido y al grano. Canciones como  “Not That Kind Of Man” y “Slave For Your Love” salieron muy bien y también la canción “So Long Old Friend”. ¡Esta es la manera que me gusta escribir y grabar!  Dinámicos, dramáticos y con un sentimiento de improvisación.  Tratamos de hacer un disco lo más orgánico posible y cada uno de los miembros hizo un magnífico trabajo.

MiM – Teniendo en cuenta que Doogie White es un hombre muy ocupado. ¿La banda tendrá la oportunidad de tocar con él en los directos?

CTTB – Haremos unos pocos conciertos con Doogie este verano. El está comprometido con Michael Schenker, pero esperamos hacer alguna mini gira en este mismo año. Ya tenemos contratado un par de festivales y algunos conciertos en clubes. 

Jo Henning, guitar player and songwriter in Come Taste the Band, was interviewed by Tony González, speaking about the story of CTTB and its most recent CD, 'Reignition'. 

MiM - Hello Jo, How are you?

CTTB - I am just fine, thank you. The “Reignition” album is a huge success for Come Taste the Band, with good sales and fantastic reviews coming in from all over the world. We are all really satisfied with the album. Feeling great at the moment!

MiM - The band has been more than twenty years to record your own music. Why did you decide to do it just right now?

CTTB - Well, it seemed right just now. We had the material, got a record deal with AOR Heaven and had two world-class singers with us. It`s a blast to write material when you know Doogie White and Joe Lynn Turner is going to sing. It`s very special! And I personally really love to create new ideas within a rock frame. It`s very satisfying to be able to write new songs in the old Rock N Roll spirit.

MiM – Before writing your own material, the band decided to release two Cd’s playing Deep Purple’s songs. Why?

CTTB - Come Taste the Band started as a “Tribute to Deep Purple” band. Making those albums were just a way to show the audience who we were. And, it was good for us, because I think Glenn Hughes heard one of the albums, liked it and that kind of started our partnership back in 2007.

MiM - During this time don´t you write or play your own music?

CTTB - I have always been writing, but we were focusing on playing Purple material back then, so we didn`t play our own material until 2013 when I and Ståle Naas (CTTB bass player) wrote “Tied Down” with Joe Lynn Turner.

MiM - The band was playing with Glenn Hughes between 2007 and 2010. Was the band touring around the world with Glenn or just only Europe? For these tours, the band kept its name? Do you remember the set list during these tours?

CTTB - We were touring in Scandinavia and were billed as Glenn Hughes & Come Taste the Band. It was great fun to do those tours, almost like being inside Purple`s “Burn” album. We played the songs with lot of improvisations, like “California Jam” The setlist was “Stormbringer”, “Might Just Take Your Life”, “Sail Away”, “Love Child”, “Mistreated”, “Getting Tighter”, “You Fool No One”, “You Keep On Moving”. Extra “Soul Mover” and “Burn”. We also did “Holy Man” and “What`s Goin on Here” on some occasions.

MiM - How was the experience playing with Glenn Hughes?

CTTB - It was fantastic! He is a great musician with a lot of energy. And I loved it. As I said, it was a lot of improvisations going on and Glenn taught me to always play a concert as it was the last one I ever did. The setlist was very similar every evening but still came out fresh and different every night. I really like that approach.

MiM - In 2011 the band joint with another Deep Purple member, Joe Lynn Turner. It was playing Deep Purple songs or did you play songs from other bands where Turner was involved?

CTTB - We played songs from the three albums Joe did with Rainbow + songs from “Slaves and Masters” and some classics like “Highway Star” and “Pictures of Home”.

MiM - Was it a good experience playing with Joe Lynn Turner? Any story about that tour you would like to share with us?

CTTB - It was a very good experience. I really like Joe. He`s been kind of mentor for me and CTTB and he is an incredible singer/songwriter. And the conversations! We could sit for hours at dinner and just talk about everything. I feel thankful for having worked with him both in the studio and on the road. When we first played together, we played “Pictures of Home” with him and after we finished the song (in rehearsals) he said: “You guys play it better than Deep Purple and I fuckin played with those guys” Great smiles on everybody and a boost for our confidence.

MiM - You and Ståle Naas had written two songs with JLT: “Tied Down” and “Don`t Let Me Bleed!” Does he play these songs nowadays?

CTTB - No, I don`t think so. But I hope we are going to do those songs with Joe at a festival this summer.

MiM - Had the band been involved with other members related to Deep Purple / Rainbow or Whitesnake before recording this CD?

CTTB - Yes. We have worked with Glenn Hughes, Joe Lynn Turner, Doogie White, Graham Bonnet and Bernie Marsden. So we are pretty lucky!

MiM – “Reignition” contains seven songs recorded by Doogie White. How did you convince him to join the band?

CTTB - We did some concerts together and that went really well. Doogie is a great singer and a very nice person. So I asked him if he was interested in writing some songs with me. I did send him a few songs and I think he liked the way I wrote. We have a great partnership. I really like the way he sings and writes on the “Reignition” album. Very inspiring. He came over to Oslo and he did all the vocals in just two days. Fantastic to work like that. Quick and to the point. Songs like “Not That Kind Of Man” and “Slave for Your Love” came out very well and also the song “So Long Old Friend”. That`s the way I wanna write and record. Dynamic, dramatic and with an impro-feel. We also tried to make the album as organic as we could. There is some great playing/singing by every member of the band on this record.

MiM - Taking account Doogie White is a very busy singer. Does the band had or will have the opportunity to play with him? If not, who will be the singer?

CTTB - We will do a few concerts with Doogie this summer. He`s busy with Michael Schenker, but we hope to do some mini tours later this year.

We have booked a couple of festivals and a few club shows.
