Tuvimos la oportunidad de hablar con Roger Earl, batería y miembro fundador de Foghat (de hecho, el único miembro original en estos momentos) Y aunque el motivo era la salida de su disco '8 Days on the Road', la conversación fluyó inevitablemente hacia la historia de la banda. 

MiM: Estamos aquí para hablar sobre el nuevo CD de Foghat, “8 Days on the Road”, pero quiero preguntarte sobre la larga historia de tu banda. A partir de 1971 cuando comienza la banda. ¿Por qué decidiste dejar Savoy Brown?

RE: En ese momento me pareció una buena idea. Tony Stevens fue despedido. Lonesome Dave y yo pensamos que era hora de un cambio. Trabajamos con Kim (Simmonds) hasta que armó una nueva banda. He seguido siendo amigo de Kim. También tocó en algunas de nuestras canciones en nuestro último álbum de estudio, “Under the Influence”. Kim también ha escrito un par de canciones para nuestro próximo álbum de estudio.

MiM: Una canción como "I Just Want To Make Love To You" es parte del ADN de Foghat. Cuando la canción fue publicada en 1972 en el LP “Foghat”, ¿no tenías la sensación de que esta canción sería un gran éxito?

RE: Muddy Waters lo grabó por primera vez y Willie Dixon escribió "I Just Want To Make Love To You". Siempre fue una de nuestras canciones favoritas. No estoy seguro si pensé que sería un éxito, pero me encantó nuestra grabación. Dave Edmunds produjo el primer álbum y creo que su producción tuvo mucho que ver con el éxito de la canción y del álbum.

MiM: Otra canción muy famosa es “Honey Hush”. Les confieso que cuando escuché esta canción por primera vez, pensé que era la canción más fuerte que jamás había hecho. ¿Sigues tocando esa canción en vivo? Porque no aparece en “8 Days on the Road”.

RE: Cambiamos nuestro set cada año y tratamos de poner algunas canciones diferentes en el set. Hemos grabado "Honey Hush" en vivo varias veces. Este disco se grabó a fines de 2019, justo antes de que llegara el COVID-19. Sí, también es uno de mis favoritos. Fue grabado por primera vez por Big Joe Williams. 1953 o por ahí. Nos inspiramos en la versión de 1956 de Johnny Burnette  and the Rock n’ Roll Trio.

MiM: La primera canción que recuerdo fue “Slow Ride”. Yo era un chico joven al que le gustaba la música y todas las noches sintonizaba una estación de radio de Arkansas, KAAW. Vivía en La Habana, Cuba y siempre soñé con tener un Lp de Foghat, pero no sucedió. Estos tiempos fueron los mejores momentos de la banda. ¿Cómo afrontaron usted y sus compañeros de trabajo el éxito de los años setenta?

RE: Los setenta fueron una gran época para Foghat y la música rock n’ roll. El riff de apertura de "Slow Ride" fue inspirado por John Lee Hooker. La canción todavía tiene una recepción fantástica hoy. Creciste en Cuba, me encantaría ir allí algún día. Quizás Foghat podría tocar allí. Eso sería genial. España también. Nos encantaría tocar en España.

MiM: Más tarde supe que Foghat era de Londres. Siempre sentí que Foghat era una banda estadounidense como Gran Funk Railroad, para comparar (y lo hago recordando la gira de ambos grupos por Estados Unidos en 2021). Creo que mudarte a Estados Unidos fue una muy buena idea teniendo en cuenta tu música y tu futuro, pero. ¿Por qué la banda se muda a USA? ¿No tenías la misma popularidad en Reino Unido?

RE: Estados Unidos es el hogar de la música: blues, jazz, country y western, rock n' roll, rhythm and blues, gospel y soul... Estados Unidos le dio música al mundo. Por eso vivo aquí. Esta es una cita atribuida a Hubert Butler “sobre las barreras, siempre han surgido grandes culturas de la interacción de diversas sociedades. Y donde esa interacción ha sido variada, fácil y recíproca… el genio nacional se ha expresado más libremente”. Esta cita suena a verdad para mí. La banda ahora es 3/4 estadounidense y ¼ adoptada Limey.

MiM: En 1977 sale Foghat Live. Tuve este Lp finalmente a mediados de los ochenta. ¿Qué recuerdas del proceso de grabación?¿Por qué no se incluyó “Driving Wheel” de “Night Shift”?

RE: Se suponía que el álbum sería un álbum doble, pero Warner Brothers, la compañía discográfica matriz de Bearsville, decidió no hacerlo. Estuvimos tocando sets de una hora y media. "Drivin' Wheel", "Chateau Lafitte '59 Boogie", "Maybellene" y otros estaban en el set. El álbum fue grabado en dos espectáculos: Syracuse y Rochester. Se mezcló en Suntreader Studios en Sharon, Vermont. Todo en directo. Utilizamos la unidad de grabación móvil RCA.

MiM: Por estos tiempos, “Fool for the City” fue otro éxito, más suave que “Slow Ride” y “I Just Want to…” ¿Quién decidió lanzarlo como single?

RE: Nuestra compañía discográfica, Bearsville, tomó la decisión.

MiM: Por cierto, el Lp tiene una curiosa fotografía tuya sentada en un palco en la ciudad de Nueva York. ¿Quién tuvo la idea? ¿Había un significado detrás de la foto, o era simplemente una forma sencilla de hacer la portada del Lp?

RE: Estoy pescando en una alcantarilla en St. Mark's Place, en Greenwich Village en la ciudad de Nueva York. Soy un ávido pescador (¡Pesco, luego existo!). Fue idea de nuestro productor, Nick Jameson.

MiM: Incluso cuando no estuvo todo el tiempo en Foghat, Lonesone Dave Peverett era el cantante más reconocible de la banda. ¿Estaba en Foghat cuando murió? Por favor, háblame de estos días si no te importa. ¿Tuviste la idea de terminar la banda después de su muerte?

RE: Sí, Dave estuvo en la banda hasta que murió. Nunca quise dejar de tocar, así que nunca pensé en terminar la banda.

MiM: Volviendo al presente Teniendo en cuenta que “Under the Influence” recibió muy buenas críticas. ¿Siguió la banda grabando material nuevo?

RE: Hemos lanzado tres álbumes de estudio: "Last Train Home", "Under the Influence" y "Family Joules". Estamos trabajando en un nuevo álbum de estudio con Scott Holt como vocalista principal. Charlie Huhn se ha retirado. 

MiM: La banda tiene una formación sólida y los músicos son muy buenos. ¿Cuánto tiempo vas a continuar con el legado de Foghat? Tal vez seas el tipo de persona que morirá en el escenario.

RE: Scott Holt es el cantante y guitarrista principal de la banda. Cantó en tres canciones de "Under the Influence" y tocó la guitarra en siete. También fue el cantante principal de Earl and the Agitators. También tocó la guitarra con Buddy Guy durante más de 10 años. Y sí, voy a rodar hasta que sea viejo y rockear hasta que me caiga”.

MiM: Muchas gracias Roger. Si quieres terminar con unas palabras de los fans cubanos y españoles (porque esta entrevista es de Made in metal España donde he estado viviendo desde hace once años), este es tu momento.

RE: Nos encantaría tocar en Cuba y España. De Cuba ha salido una enorme cantidad de buena música y jazz. También una tierra de buena música. ¡Y la gente de España y Cuba saben rockear!

“I will ‘Roll ‘til I’m old and Rock ‘till I drop”.

We had the opportunity to speak with Roger Earl, drummer and founding member of Foghat (in fact the only original member at the moment) And although the reason was the release of his album “8 Days on the Road”, the conversation inevitably flowed towards the Band history.

MiM: We are here to talk about the new Foghat CD, “8 Days on the Road” but I want to ask about your band's long history. Starting from 1971 when the band starts. Why did you decide to leave Savoy Brown?

RE: At the time it seemed like a good idea. Tony Stevens was fired. Lonesome Dave and I thought it was time for a change. We worked with Kim (Simmonds) until he put a new band together. I have stayed friends with Kim. He also played on some of our songs on our last studio album, "Under the Influence". Kim has also written a couple of songs for our upcoming studio album.

MiM: A song like “I just want to make love to you” is part of Foghat DNA. When the song was published in 1972 in “Foghat” the LP, didn’t you have the feeling that this song will be very a massive hit?

RE: Muddy Waters first recorded it and Willie Dixon wrote: “I Just Want To Make Love To You”. It was always one of our favorite songs. I’m not sure if I thought it would be a hit, but I loved our recording of it. Dave Edmunds produced the first album and I think his production had a great deal to do with the song and album’s success.

MiM: Another very famous song is “Honey Hush”. I confess to you that when I listen to this song for the first time, I thought that it were the strongest song I had ever made. Are you still playing that song alive? Because It doesn´t appear on “8 Days on the Road”.

RE: We change our set around every year and try to put some different songs in the set. We have recorded “Honey Hush” live a number of times. This record was recorded at the end of 2019, just before COVID-19 hit. Yes, it’s one of my favorites, too. It was first recorded by Big Joe Williams. 1953 or about there. We took inspiration from the 1956 version by Johnny Burnette and the Rock n’ Roll trio.

MiM: The first song I remember was “Slow Ride”. I was a young boy who likes music and every night I tune a radio station from Arkansas and usually play it. I was living in Havana, Cuba and I always dream of having a Foghat Lp, but it didn´t happen. These times were the best moments for the band. How did you and your co-workers deal with the success in the seventies?

RE: The seventies were a great time for Foghat and rock n’ roll music. The opening riff of “Slow Ride” was inspired by John Lee Hooker. The song still gets a fantastic reception today. You grew up in Cuba, I would love to go there one day. Maybe Foghat could play there. That would be cool. Spain, though. We would love to play in Spain. 

MiM: I knew that Foghat was from London later. I always felt that Foghat was an American band like Grand Funk Railroad, to compare ( and I did it remembering the American tour they did together in 2021). I think that moving to the U.S. was a very good idea taking into account your music and your future. Why did the band move to the USA? Didn´t you have the same popularity in the UK?

RE: America is the home of music: blues, jazz, country and western, rock n’ roll, rhythm and blues, gospel and soul… America gave music to the world. That’s why I live here. This is a quote attributed to Hubert Butler “over the barriers, where great cultures have always risen from the interaction of diverse societies. And where that interaction has been varied, easy and reciprocated… national genius has expressed itself most freely.” This quote has the ring of truth for me. The band is now 3/4 American and ¼ adopted Limey. 

MiM: In 1977 Foghat Live is released. I have this Lp finally in the middle eighties. What do you remember about the recording process? Why wasn´t “Driving Wheel” from “Night Shift” included?

RE: The album was supposed to be a double album, but Warner Brothers, Bearsville’s parent record company, decided not to do it. We were playing one and a half hour sets. “Drivin’ Wheel”, “Chateau Lafitte ’59 Boogie”, “Maybellene” and others were in the set. The album was recorded at 2 shows: Syracuse and Rochester. It was mixed at Suntreader Studios in Sharon, Vermont. It’s live. We used the RCA mobile recording unit.

MiM: By these times, “Fool for the City” was another hit, softer than “Slow Ride” and “I Just Want to…” Who decided to release it as a single? 

RE: Our record company, Bearsville, took the decision.

MiM: By the way, the Lp has a curious photograph of you sitting on a box in New York City. Who had the idea? There was a meaning behind the photo, or it was just a simple way to make the Lp cover?

RE: I’m fishing in a manhole in St. Mark’s Place, in Greenwich Village in New York City.  I’m an avid fisherman (I fish, therefore I am!). It was our producer, Nick Jameson’s, idea.

MiM: Even when he wasn´t all the time in Foghat, Lonesone Dave Peverett was the most recognizable singer of the band. Was he in Foghat when he died? Please, tell me about these days if you don´t mind. Did you have the idea of finishing the band after he passed away?

RE: Yes, Dave was in the band up until he died. I never wanted to stop playing, so I never thought of finishing the band.

MiM: Coming back to the present. Taking into account that “Under the Influence” received very good reviews. Was the band recording new material?

RE: We have released three studio albums: “Last Train Home”, “Under the Influence”, and “Family Joules”. We are working on a new studio album with Scott Holt singing lead vocals. Charlie Hunh is retired now. 

MiM: The band has a solid line up and the musicians are very good. How long are you going to continue with Foghat legacy? Maybe you are the kind of person who will die on the stage. 

RE: Scott Holt is the band’s lead singer and guitar player. He sang three songs on “Under the Influence”, and played guitar on seven. He was also the lead singer in Earl and the Agitators. He also played guitar with Buddy Guy for over 10 years. And yes, I will ‘Roll ‘til I’m old and Rock ‘till I drop”.

MiM: Thank you very much, Roger. If you want to finish with a few words from the Cuban and Spanish fans (because this interview is from Made in metal Spain where I have been living the last eleven years), this is your moment.

RE: We would love to play in Cuba and Spain. A tremendous amount of great music and jazz has come out of Cuba. Also a land of great music. And the people of Spain & Cuba know how to rock!
