Max Hunt es un teclista, multi instrumentista, vocalista y productor inglés de rock progresivo, actualmente radicado en Alemania, que ha trabajado con Jon Anderson, Alan White y Steve Howe de Yes, Chris Thompson de Manfred Mann's Earthband, Nicky James, Siggy Schwarz, Pete York y muchos más.

MiM: ¡Hola Max! Para empezar, haciendo un poco de historia y echando la vista atrás, ¿cuéntame sobre tus primeros pasos en la música? ¿Por qué te decides por el teclado principalmente?

MH: Hola Raúl, Cuando entré a la escuela a los cinco años tenía una maestra de clase que era muy buena pianista y nos tocaba piezas clásicas de piano todos los días. Su nombre era Sra. Cook y ella me inspiró a aprender piano. Empecé lecciones con un maestro local a la edad de cinco años y me uní a mi primera banda a la edad de quince años.

MiM: ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de tus primeros conciertos?

MH: A la edad de quince años, en realidad era un gran admirador de Motörhead & Hawkwind. Hawkwind fue la primera banda conocida que vi en vivo, eso fue en 1981. En ese momento me uní a mi primera banda de covers/dance llamada Eclypse. El gerente de la banda también tenía una tienda de música local y compré mi primera configuración de teclado, que era un órgano de escenario Yamaha YC-250 y un sintetizador mono preestablecido Korg M500 con mis pagos de conciertos durante los primeros dos años. Mis primeras presentaciones fueron bailes en escuelas locales y clubes sociales.

MiM: ¿Cuáles son los músicos que de alguna manera crees que son parte de tus influencias?

MH: Mis mayores influencias como teclista y compositor son Jon Lord, Vangelis, Rick Wakeman y Tony Banks.

Tuve el placer de aprender gran parte de las partes de teclado de Yes de Rick Wakeman durante mi tiempo tocando en vivo con Fragile, quienes son el grupo original europeo de tributo a Yes. MiM: Como productor e ingeniero de sonido has tenido la oportunidad de trabajar con importantes músicos de rock progresivo. ¿Cuéntame sobre eso?

MH: Dirijo mi propio estudio/negocio de producción desde 1993 y he producido muchos álbumes para una variedad de artistas relativamente desconocidos y también álbumes para mi propia banda de rock progresivo Tantalus, que existió entre 1993 y 2007.

En 2007, Fish me contactó para escribir y grabar partes de teclado para su álbum "The Thirteenth Star". Trabajé en algunos demos en mi estudio y luego viajé a Escocia durante una semana para trabajar con Fish y su banda. En 2013, Claire Hamill (Wishbone Ash, Steve Howe, Jon & Vangelis) se unió a Fragile como vocalista principal. Desde entonces he trabajado con Claire en "Golden Fragments" y "Beyond Fragile" álbumes originales y también han grabado algunos teclados para el nuevo álbum en solitario de Claire, que saldrá a finales de este año.

En 2015 me uní a una versión reformada de Mabel Greer´s Toyshop, la banda anterior a Yes de la década de 1960, y coproduje su segundo álbum “The Secret” en 2016. Seguí trabajando con el miembro fundador de Mabel Greer´s Toyshop, Clive Bayley. Produjimos un álbum llamado "Whispers" en 2018/19 y estamos terminando nuestro segundo álbum que se lanzará en abril de este año.

MiM: Has estado en exposiciones de arte exclusivas con Roger Dean y con Steve Grant (George Harrison y The Sweet). ¿Háblame de estas actuaciones?

MH: Sí, me uní a la Barockestra de Steve Grant en 2009. Interpretamos música clásica y barroca de compositores famosos. Realizamos espectáculos en el Reino Unido y Alemania, incluso como teloneros de The Sweet.

Los espectáculos de Fragile/Roger Dean comenzaron en un lugar llamado Trading Boundaries en 2010. MiM: Háblame de tu álbum debut titulado “Hope”. ¿De qué se trata? ¿Cuál es el concepto musical del álbum? ¿En qué estudio de grabación tuvo lugar?

MH: Ahora tengo mi propio estudio de grabación bien equipado aquí en el sur de Alemania, aquí es donde se grabó “Hope”. Decidí hacer el álbum a fines de 2020, ya que habíamos sufrido casi un año entero de encierro aquí en Alemania sin música en vivo. Me mudé a Alemania en 2018 y me uní a la banda del conocido guitarrista de rock alemán Siggi Schwarz. En 2018/19 estuve muy ocupado haciendo espectáculos con Siggi, incluidos espectáculos con orquestas sinfónicas alemanas conocidas, orquestas y coros juveniles y de proyectos, el ex cantante de Manfred Mann Earth Band, Chris Thompson, Peter Maffay, el guitarrista Frank Diez y el baterista original de Spencer Davis Group, Pete York. Todo este trabajo se detuvo en 2020, así que tenía tiempo libre. El título “Hope” representa la esperanza de que la vida vuelva a la normalidad para todos. La música es realmente una finalización de pistas iniciadas en los últimos quince años más material nuevo escrito a principios de 2021. Algunas de las pistas se originaron como demos grabadas para Fish y Jon Anderson, pero nunca se terminaron hasta ahora. La pista más nueva es "Dark Age Techno Dream", escrita en marzo/abril de 2021. Los efectos de sonido al comienzo de la pista de apertura "Out Of Time" se grabaron en casa en Alemania en la víspera de Año Nuevo de 2020/21. 

MiM: Sé que en este álbum tocas todos los instrumentos y cantas la voz principal y los coros. ¿Cuéntame sobre esta experiencia?

MH: Tocar todos los instrumentos fue bastante fácil, ya que podía hacerlo poco a poco en la sala de control del estudio. Grabar las voces fue complicado ya que tengo una sala de directo/cabina vocal separada. ¡Así que tuve que configurar la grabación de la pista y darme suficiente tiempo para correr a la sala de voz/en vivo, cerrar todas las puertas, ponerme los auriculares y comenzar a tiempo! Eso fue complicado, pero mejoré a medida que avanzaban las pistas. Fue genial tener la libertad de hacer lo que quisiera y todo el proceso fue una verdadera liberación de energía para mí.

MiM: Excelente diseño de portada de disco. ¿Quién estaba a cargo?

MH: ¡Muchas gracias! La portada del álbum es una pintura del artista estadounidense 'Fantascape' Steve Mayerson. Habíamos trabajado con Steve en las portadas de los álbumes "Golden Fragments" y "Beyond" de Fragile. Steve me contactó a principios de 2021 para usar su pintura 'Make a Wish' para mi álbum en solitario "Hope".

MiM: Estos últimos dos años han sido atípicos y difíciles para los músicos debido a la pandemia. ¿Cómo has manejado esta situación?

MH: ¡Ha sido una pesadilla para la mayoría de los músicos profesionales! He perdido dos años de trabajo en vivo/gira, incluidos espectáculos reservados con ex-miembros de la banda de Ozzy Osbourne (incluido el conocido teclista de rock Don Airey) y casi no ha habido ayuda oficial para los artistas aquí en Alemania. Obtuve un par de subvenciones para financiar pequeños proyectos de una fundación de arte local llamada Hessische Kulturstiftung y una de las subvenciones ayudó a financiar mi álbum en solitario. Los álbumes de Fragile y solista, más un par de pequeños conciertos y la ayuda de amigos y familiares me han ayudado a seguir adelante. Actualmente estoy buscando financiación para un nuevo proyecto de álbum para este año titulado “Music from The Void”,  incluida una campaña de financiación de Facebook. MiM: ¿Qué bandas me recomendarías escuchar de la escena del rock progresivo?

MH: Me encantan las viejas bandas progresivas de los 70 como Yes, la era de Genesis Peter Gabriel, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Pink Floyd y también me gustan mucho algunas de las bandas de la escena de Canterbury de los 70 como Caravan, National Health y Camel. Mi propia banda Neo-Prog Tantalus también sacó algunos buenos álbumes en los 90 y principios de los 2000. Los álbumes de Tantalus están disponibles en Bandcamp.

MiM: ¿Proyecto de gira o conciertos este año?

MH: Estoy planeando reiniciar mi propia banda The Thrill para algunos shows aquí en Alemania además de shows con Siggi Schwarz Band and Frankfurter Sinfoniker. También comenzaré algunas presentaciones en solitario en apoyo de mi álbum. Tengo la ambición de interpretar algo de mi propia música original con una orquesta.

Max Hunt is an English progressive rock keyboard player, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and producer, currently based in Germany, who has worked with Jon Anderson, Alan White & Steve Howe of Yes, Chris Thompson of Manfred Mann's Earth band, Nicky James, Siggy Schwarz, Pete York and many more.

MiM: Hi Max !! To start by doing a little bit of history and looking back, tell me about your first steps in music? And why do you decide on the keyboard mainly?

MH: Hi Raúl, When I started school at the age of five I had a class teacher who was a good pianist and played classical piano pieces to us every day. Her name was Mrs Cook and she inspired me to learn piano. I started lessons with a local teacher at the age of five and joined my first band at the age of fifteen.

MiM: What memories do you have of your first concerts?

MH: At the age of fifteen I was actually a big fan of Motörhead & Hawkwind. Hawkwind was the first known band that I saw live, that was in 1981. At this time I joined my first cover/dance band called Eclypse. The band manager also ran a local music shop & I purchased my first keyboard set-up which was a Yamaha YC-250 stage organ and a Korg M500 preset mono synth with my gig payments during the first two years. My first performances were dances at local schools and social clubs.

MiM: Which are the musicians that somehow you think are part of your influences?

MH: My biggest influences as a keyboardist and composer are Jon Lord, Vangelis, Rick Wakeman, and Tony Banks.

I had the pleasure of learning much of Rick Wakeman´s Yes keyboard parts during my time performing live with Fragile, who is the original European Yes Tribute act. In around 2007 we appeared on a UK primetime TV show with Rick Wakeman and I have had the pleasure of having personal contact with Rick since that time. Jon Lord was my absolute keyboard hero as a teenager and he lived near my grandparents' house near the Thames river in southern England. I actually went to Jon´s house at the age of fifteen, just after joining Eclypse and he was very gracious to me and took time to talk with me, which was great. I love Keith Emerson´s work also, especially his Hammond playing in The Nice. I prefer The Nice sound to ELP as I am not keen on bands without good guitar. 

MiM: Tell me about the experience of working with great figures like Steve Howe and Jon Anderson? How did the idea come about?

MH: In 2005, Steve Howe contacted Fragile directly. At this time Yes had been in a protracted break from working and Steve liked the idea of playing some live dates with us. So in 2005,2006 and 2007 we performed some short tours and one-off dates with Steve in UK, Belgium, Holland & Switzerland. We all got to know Steve very well in this time. He was a really nice guy to work with. We even had the pleasure of rehearsing with Steve at the old farmhouse in Devon where Yes wrote “The Yes Album” back in 1971. Steve bought the house later in the 1970s and has his studio and guitar collection at this house.

I contacted Jon Anderson via email in 2005 responding to an advert on his website looking for new musicians to collaborate with. He liked my work and we started writing together via the Internet. He mentioned me in a 2006 Time Magazine interview. We have met several times in both the UK and Germany and get on very well. We have quite a lot of material written, but sadly nothing released to date. I was mentioned on the notes of Jon´s 2011 “Survival and Other Stories” album, but none of my material appears on that album. Some of my compositions originally written for Jon do appear on my new solo album “Hope” with my own lyrics and vocals. 

MiM: Another turning point in your career was working with Alan White (John Lennon, Yes) 

MH: In 2009 we (Fragile) were contacted by Alan White about doing a one-off performance with him in Liverpool. We performed a show with Alan at The Mathew Street Festival in Liverpool with an audience of over 35,000 people in August 2009.

MiM: As a producer and sound engineer you have had the opportunity to work with important progressive rock musicians. Tell me about it?

MH: I have run my own studio/production business since 1993 and have produced many albums for a variety of relatively unknown artists and also albums for my own progressive rock band Tantalus which existed between 1993 and 2007.

In 2007 I was contacted by Fish about writing and recording keyboard parts for his “The Thirteenth Star” album. I worked on some demos in my studio and then traveled to Scotland for a week to work with Fish and his band. I contributed keyboard parts to demo versions of “The Thirteenth Star” album but shortly after that well known keyboardist Foss Patterson took over as Fish´s regular keyboardist and Foss actually recorded the final keyboard parts for that album. I was credited on the album and Fish was very good about the whole situation and we have remained in contact. At the time that Fish contacted me in 2007, Fragile´s drummer was ex-Marillion/Fish drummer Johnny Martyr. Johnny had given my number to Fish and recommended him to call me.

I also worked extensively with singer-songwriter Nicky James (Denny Laine, The Walker Brothers, The Moody Blues 5, John Bonham, Bev Bevan, Graeme Edge, Ray Thomas & The Nicky James Movement) during the 1990s and early 2000s.

In 2013 Claire Hamill (Wishbone Ash, Steve Howe, Jon & Vangelis) joined Fragile as lead vocalist. I have since worked with Claire on both “Golden Fragments” and “Beyond Fragile” original albums and have also recorded some keyboards for Claire´s new solo album, due out later this year.

In 2015 I joined a reformed version of the 1960s pre-Yes band Mabel Greer´s Toyshop and co-produced their second album “The Secret” in 2016. I have continued to work with Mabel Greer´s Toyshop founder member Clive Bayley. We produced an album called “Whispers” in 2018/19 and are just finishing our second album which should be released in April this year.

MiM: You've been to exclusive art shows with Roger Dean and with Steve Grant (George Harrison and The Sweet). Tell me about these performances?

MH: Yes, I joined Steve Grant´s Barockestra in 2009. We performed rocked-up classical and Baroque music from famous composers. We performed shows in the UK and Germany including as support for The Sweet.

The Fragile/Roger Dean shows started at a venue called Trading Boundaries in 2010. Trading Boundaries hosts regular annual Roger Dean Art exhibitions and we were booked to play a set of Yes music at the opening of the 2010 exhibition. These performances continued for several years. We also did a one-off theater show in southern England with Roger Dean in 2012. Roger did a talk with projected images in the first part of the show and then he projected images of the Yes album covers for us as we performed the tracks live.

MiM: Tell me about your debut album entitled “Hope”. What is it about? What is the musical concept of the album? In which recording studio did it take place?

MH: I have my own well-equipped recording studio now, here in southern Germany, this is where “Hope” was recorded. I decided to do the album in late 2020 as we had suffered nearly a whole year of lock-down here in Germany with no live music. I moved to Germany in 2018 and joined the band of well-known German rock guitarist Siggi Schwarz. In 2018/19 I was really busy doing shows with Siggi, including shows with well-known German symphony orchestras, youth and project orchestras, and choirs, ex- Manfred Mann Earth Band singer Chris Thompson, Peter Maffay. guitarist Frank Diez and original Spencer Davis Group drummer Pete York. All this work stopped in 2020 so I had time on my hands. The title “Hope” represents the hope of life getting back to normal for all. The music is really completion of tracks started in the past fifteen years plus some new material written in early 2021. Some of the tracks originated as demos recorded for Fish and Jon Anderson but were never finished until now. The newest track is “Dark Age Techno Dream” written in March/April 2021. The sound effects at the beginning of the opening track “Out Of Time” were recorded at home in Germany on New Year´s Eve 2020/21.

MiM: On this album, I know you play all the instruments and sing lead and backing vocals. Tell me about this experience?

MH: Playing all the instruments was quite easy as I could do it all bit by bit in the studio control room. Recording the vocals was tricky as I have a separate live-room/vocal booth. So I had to set the track recording and give myself enough time to run into the live/vocal room, shut all the doors and put on the headphones, and start in time! That was tricky but I got better at it as the tracks progressed. It was great having the freedom to do whatever I wanted and the whole process was a real release of energy for me.

MiM: Excellent album cover design. Who was in charge?

MH: Many thanks! The album cover artwork is a painting by American ´Fantascape´ artist Steve Mayerson. We had worked with Steve on the album covers for the “Golden Fragments” and “Beyond” albums by Fragile. Steve contacted me in early 2021 about using his ´Make a Wish´ painting for my solo album “Hope”. 

 MiM: These last two years have been atypical and difficult for musicians due to the pandemic. How have you handled this situation?

MH: It has been a nightmare for most professional musicians! I have lost two years of live/touring work including shows booked with ex-Ozzy Osbourne band members (including well-known Rock keyboardist Don Airey) and there has been nearly no official help for artists here in Germany. I did get a couple of small project funding grants from a local arts foundation called the Hessische Kulturstiftung and one of the grants helped to fund my solo album. The Fragile and solo albums, plus a couple of small gigs and help from friends and family have just about kept me going. I am currently looking for funding for a new album project for this year entitled “Music from The Void”, including a Facebook Funding campaign. All the details are on my Max Hunt (professional keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist/vocalist) Facebook page. It does look like live shows are restarting again this year in Germany, which is great.  

MiM: What bands would you recommend me to listen to from the progressive rock scene?

MH: I love the old 70s prog Bands like Yes, Genesis Peter Gabriel era, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, and I also really like some of the 70s Canterbury scene bands like Caravan, National Health, and Camel. My own Neo-Prog band Tantalus also put out some good albums in the 90s and early 2000s. The Tantalus albums are available at Bandcamp. 

MiM: Tour project or concerts this year?

MH: I´m planning on restarting my own band The Thrill for some shows here in Germany plus shows with the Siggi Schwarz Band and Frankfurter Sinfoniker. I will also start some solo shows in support of my album. I have the ambition to perform some of my own original music with an orchestra.
