En apoyo a su décimo aniversario, la banda alemana de power metal IRON SAVIOR lanzó una edición especial de su álbum clásico de 2011 'The Landing', el 19 de noviembre de 2021. Finalmente, ¡el disco ahora también está disponible en vinilo a través de AFM Records! El álbum de aniversario no solo incluye tres bonus tracks, sino que también fue remezclado y remasterizado por el propio Piet y viene con una portada revisada por Felipe Machado Franco. 'The Landing' se convirtió en uno de los álbumes más exitosos de la banda de Hamburgo y presagiaba una especie de resurgimiento de IRON SAVIOR en ese entonces. Contiene varios temas clásicos como "Starlight", "Hall Of The Heroes" y, por supuesto, el himno del metal por excelencia, "Heavy Metal Never Dies", una canción que ha sido escuchada más de 10.000.000 de veces hasta el día de hoy. A propósito del lanzamiento en vinilo, el bajista Jan Soeren Eckert, miembro oficial de IRON SAVIOR desde 1997, conversa con Raúl Cardona en una charla que deriva acerca de su historia como músico de principio a fin.

MiM: ¡Hola Jan! ¿Cómo estás? Para Made in Metal, es un gran placer que haya accedido a informarnos sobre los planes de Iron Savior.

ES: Hola Raúl. Todo funcionando aquí. Muchas gracias de hecho. Mi placer.

MiM: Jan, cuéntame sobre tus inicios en la música cuando eras parte de las bandas Charon, Mydra y Das Auge Gottes, entre otras. ¿Crees que este período te ayudó a ganar experiencia como músico? ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de esa época?

ES: Por supuesto. Si. Cuanto más toques y más estilos e influencias diferentes obtengas, más diversidad podrás agregar a tu interpretación. Además, cuanto más tocas, menos te estresan las cosas inesperadas que suceden en el escenario o alrededor.

Especialmente al principio, como músico profesional con Mydra, todos aprendimos mucho. Eso significa no solo tocar tu instrumento correctamente, también incluye el comportamiento y la actitud en el escenario y detrás del escenario. Puedo decir que cometí muchos errores, pero así es la vida. Todos cometemos errores, por eso hay una goma de la India en la parte trasera de un lápiz. ;-)

Recuerdo una pelea entre nuestro cantante Keith y algún otro cantante sobre quién podía copiar mejor a Bon Scott… desafortunadamente esto fue en una fiesta de nuestra compañía discográfica German Phonoram. Entonces comenzaron los problemas y nosotros, como compañeros de banda, intervinimos. Lo siguiente que recuerdo es que estaba parado en el bar ocupado por Darrell Sweet, baterista de Nazareth, quien me sacó de allí y me sedó con un gran vaso de whisky, así que tuve que encontrar mi habitación de inmediato... Jajaja... Gracias a Darrell, quien lamentablemente murió en 1999. Nunca lo olvidaré. 

MiM: ¿Jan cuéntame sobre los inicios de la banda? ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de aquellos tiempos? Se dice que debido a la presencia de Kai Hansen en los primeros discos de la banda el sonido era muy cercano al de bandas como Helloween y Gamma Ray. ¿Qué me puedes decir al respecto?

IS: Hmm, antes que nada, tengo que aclarar una cosa importante: sí, fui el bajista en vivo de Iron Savior desde el principio, pero NO toqué el bajo en este primer disco.

Piet y yo nos encontramos un par de veces en Reeperbahn en los clubes de la escena musical, tomando unas pintas de cerveza, hablando de música, incluso antes de que supiéramos que terminaríamos como compañeros de banda. Después de que Piet, Kai y Thomen clavaran ese disco, tenían que encontrar el eslabón perdido. El bajista para el resto de la vida. Así sucedió, que un día Piet y yo nos encontramos en la tienda Amptown Music en la hermosa ciudad de Hamburgo, Alemania, donde yo trabajaba vendiendo guitarras y esas cosas, y él me preguntó directamente si me gustaría escuchar sus canciones y tal vez unirme a la banda. El resto es historia.

Tu pregunta sobre el sonido... Piet y Kai crecieron juntos, tuvieron su primera banda real juntos y de ahí surgieron Helloween y Gamma Ray, según tengo entendido. Y, por supuesto, es por eso que el sonido estaba cerca. Pero yo no he sido parte de eso. Eso vino después.

MiM: ”The Condition Red“ (Noise International, 2002) este año celebra su vigésimo lanzamiento. Este es un gran álbum. ¿Algún plan de la banda para celebrar este aniversario? ¿Qué me puedes decir?

IS: Oh, bueno, es muy posible que hagamos algo al respecto, pero es muy pronto para decirlo…

Tal vez habrá algún otro asunto con el proyecto "Reforged". Lo sabremos durante este año.

MiM: El último disco de Iron Saivor es “Skycrest“ (AFM Records, 2020). ¿De qué trata el disco? ¿Cúal es el concepto musical? 

IS: El espíritu del Heavy Metal, #raisetheflag. La eterna lucha entre el bien y el mal, sobre el amor, la muerte y la eternidad y el mensaje de ser fuerte y fiel a ti mismo, sin importar lo que se cruce en tu camino. Y, por supuesto, sobre el poderoso Iron Savior, su eterna búsqueda de conocimiento y el objetivo de proteger a la raza humana.

MiM: Sé que después de grabar “Condition Red“(Noise International, 2002) te uniste a Masterplan. ¿Por qué tomaste esta decisión?

IS: Ah, Masterplan. Eso salió de la nada.

Estaba de vacaciones en Grecia cuando Roland me llamó, después de mucho tiempo sin vernos. Me preguntó de inmediato si me gustaría conocerlo y escuchar su nuevo proyecto presentando una versión de Led Zeppelin como aperitivo. Dicho y hecho, tras el regreso a Hamburgo. Eso fue divertido.

Reconocí al cantante como el de The Arc y me atrajo mucho la voz de Jorn y el desempeño de todo el proyecto. Por cierto: la misma historia sobre la grabación del bajo aquí. Ya estaba hecho cuando me uní a la banda. Roland tocó el bajo en el primer disco. Parece ser mi Karma, JAJAJAJA…

¿Por qué la decisión? En ese momento había muy pocos conciertos con Iron Savior, pero yo quería estar de gira porque tenía que pagar mis cuentas y realmente me gustó Masterplan, así que hablé con Piet sobre eso. No estuvo muy contento y terminamos nuestra reunión conmigo dejando a Iron Savior. Eso fue muy duro, porque dañó profundamente nuestra amistad. (No pueden imaginar lo feliz que estoy, que hoy en día el viejo espíritu está de vuelta. Durante mi experiencia con el cáncer, Piet fue como una roca con un apoyo increíble. Pero esa es otra historia).

MiM: ¿Cómo fue trabajar con Roland Grapow y Uli Kusch?

ES: Simplemente genial. Ambos son súper talentosos y trabajar con ellos fue muy inspirador, pero a veces también muy exigente. Me alegro de poder hacer ese viaje con ellos. Todavía estoy en contacto con los dos.

MiM: Fuiste parte de Running Wild. ¿Cuéntame sobre la experiencia?

IS: Bueno, es cierto que estuve actuando con ellos en el Wacken Open Air 2009 cuando Running Wild fueron cabeza de cartel, pero no he sido parte de la banda. Fui un músico invitado muy bien tratado, reservado para ese espectáculo en particular. La banda fue muy agradable y Rolf ha sido muy justo como empleador y líder de la banda.

MiM: ¿Planes de conciertos y giras en este 2022?

IS: Si. Consulte www.iron-savior.com

Se avecina algo y, por cierto, es muy probable que suceda que tocaremos un "espectáculo posterior a Wacken" especial con algunos invitados especiales el 7 de agosto en Hademarscher Hof cerca de Wacken este año. También hay planeadas algunas giras cortas en España e Italia. Algunos shows individuales en Finlandia y Alemania.

MiM: ¿Cómo has vivido el confinamiento y la pandemia hasta ahora?

ES: Relajado. Realmente disfruté cómo de repente todo se movió más lento. Sin palabras sobre cómo el comportamiento de las personas cambiaba de vez en cuando. #papel-higienico… jajajajaja… sin comentarios…. jajajajaja

Estaba muy concentrado en las cosas básicas de la vida, especialmente porque tenía que recuperarme de la quimioterapia y sus efectos secundarios y encontrar el camino de regreso a la vida. ¡Me alegro de que el encierro terminó y podamos volver al escenario! ¡No hay mejor público que el Heavy Metal! ¡Realmente extraño eso!

MiM: ¿Qué bandas me recomendarías escuchar de la escena Power Metal?

IS: Oha… Debo decir que me gusta mucho el último Helloween. Realmente patea traseros lo que están haciendo. Una novedad muy fresca en la órbita es Induction, de Tim Kanoa Hansen y sus amigos. Más power metal progresivo. Toca mis nervios de una manera muy positiva. Muy talentoso, de hecho. Y, por supuesto: Iron Savior

MiM: Finalmente, quería que te sintieras libre de compartir algunas palabras con tus fans y nuestros lectores.

IS: Todo lo que puedo decir aquí es que estoy muy agradecido por tener la oportunidad de tocar nuestra música frente a estos increíbles y locos metaleros. Por favor, mantengan vivo su positivismo que nos ayuda a todos a superar estos tiempos difíciles.

"During my cancer experience, Piet was like a rock with incredible support".

In support of their 10th anniversary, German power metal band IRON SAVIOR released a special edition of their 2011 classic album "The Landing", on November 19, 2021. Finally, the record is now also available on vinyl via AFM Records! The anniversary album not only includes three bonus tracks but was also remixed and remastered by Piet himself and comes with revised cover art by Felipe Machado Franco. "The Landing" became one of the Hamburg band's most successful albums and heralded something of an IRON SAVIOR revival at the time. It contains several classic tracks like "Starlight", "Hall Of The Heroes" and of course the quintessential metal anthem, "Heavy Metal Never Dies", a song that has been listened to over 10,000,000 times to date. from today. Regarding the vinyl release, bassist Jan Soeren Eckert, an official member of Iron Savior since 1997, talks with Raúl Cardona in a talk about his story as a musician from start to finish.

MiM: Hi Jan! How are you? For Made in Metal, it is a great pleasure that you have agreed to inform us about the plans of Iron Savior.

IS: Hi Raul. All up and running over here. Thank you very much indeed. My pleasure.

MiM: Jan tell me about your beginnings in music when you were part of bands Charon, Mydra, and Das Auge Gottes, among others? Do you think that this period helped you gain experience as a musician? What memories do you have of that time?

IS: Of course. Yes. The more you play and the more different styles and influences you get, the more diversity you can add to your performance. Plus the more you perform the less you are stressed by unexpected things happening on stage, or around. 

Especially in the beginning as pro players with Mydra all of us learned a lot. That means not only playing your instrument correctly, it also includes behavior and attitude on stage and backstage. I can say that I made a lot of mistakes, but that’s life. We all make mistakes, that is why there is an India rubber at the back-end of a pencil. ;-)

I remember a fight between our singer Keith and some other singer about who can copy Bon Scott better… unfortunately this was at a party of our record company German Phonoram. So the trouble started and we as bandmates stepped in. The next thing I remember was that I was standing at the bar held by Darrell Sweet, drummer of Nazareth, who pulled me out of that and sedated me with a big glass of whisky, so I had to find my room immediately… Hahaha… Thanks to Darrell who unfortunately died in 1999. Will never forget him.

MiM: Jan tell me about the beginnings of the band? What memories do you have of those times? It is said that due to the presence of Kai Hansen on the band's early albums the sound was very close to bands like Helloween and Gamma Ray. What can you tell me about it?

IS: Hmm, first of all, I have to straighten out one important thing: Yes, I was the live bassman of Iron Savior from the beginning, but I did NOT play the bass on this first record.

Piet and I met a couple of times at Reeperbahn in the music scene clubs, having some pints of beer, talking about music, even before we knew that we end up as bandmates. After Piet, Kay and Thomen nailed that record down they had to find the missing link. The bass player for live performance. So it happened that one day Piet and myself met at Amptown Music shop in the beautiful city of Hamburg Germany, where I was working selling guitars and stuff and he asked me directly if I would like to listen to their songs and maybe join the band. The rest is history.

Your question about the sound… Piet and Kay have been kind of growing up together, had their first real band together, and out of that came Helloween and Gamma Ray, as far as I am informed. And of course, this is why the sound was close. But I have not been part of that. That came later.

MiM: „The Condition Red“ (Noise International, 2002) this year celebrates its 20th release. This is a great album. Is any plan by the band to celebrate this anniversary? What can you tell me?

IS: Oh well, it is very possible that we do something about that, but it is too early to tell…

Maybe there will be some other issue with the “Reforged“-Project. We will find out this year.

MiM: Iron Savior's latest record is “Skycrest“ (AFM Records, 2020). What is the disc about? What is the musical concept? Tell me about the idea of the two bonus track songs for the Japanese edition?

IS: The spirit of Heavy Metal, #raisetheflag. The forever ongoing fight between the good and the evil, about love, death, and eternity, and the message to be strong and true to yourself, no matter what crosses your way.

And, of course, about the mighty Iron Savior and its eternal search for knowledge and the aim to protect the human race.

MiM: I know that after recording „Condition Red“ (Noise International, 2002) you joined Masterplan. Why did you take this decision?

IS: Ah, Masterplan. That came out of the blue.

I was on holiday in Greece when Roland called me after we haven’t met for ages. He asked me straight away if I would like to meet him and listen to their new project introducing a Led Zeppelin cover as a starter. Said and done, after return to Hamburg. That was fun.

I recognized the singer as the one of The Arc and was very much attracted by Jorn’s voice and the performance of the whole project. By the way: Same story about the bass guitar recording here. It was already done when I joined the band. Roland played bass on the first record. Seems to be my Karma, HAHAHAHA…

Why the decision? At that time there was very little business with Iron Savior but I wanted to be on the road because I had to pay my bills and I really liked Masterplan, so I spoke to Piet about that. He was not very happy and we ended our meeting with me leaving Iron Savior. That was very hard because it stressed our friendship deeply. (You can’t imagine how happy I am, that nowadays the old spirit is back. During my cancer experience, Piet was like a rock with incredible support. But that is another story.)

MiM: How was it working with Roland Grapow and Uli Kusch?

IS: Just great. Both of them are super talents and working with them was very inspiring, but also sometimes very demanding. Glad I could make that trip with them. I am still in contact with both of them. 

MiM: You were part of Running Wild. Tell me about the experience? 

IS: Well, it is true that I was performing Wacken Open Air 2009 when Running Wild was headlining, but I haven’t been part of the band. I was a very well-treated guest musician, booked for that particular show. The band was very enjoyable and Rolf has been super fair as an employer and bandleader. 

MiM: Concert and tour plans in 2022?

IS: Yeah. Please check www.iron-savior.com

There is something coming up and it is, by the way, very likely to happen that we will play a special “after-wacken-show“ with some special guests at the 7th of August @ Hademarscher Hof near Wacken this year. There is also some short touring planned in Spain and Italy. Some single shows in Finland and Germany.

MiM: How had you experienced confinement and the pandemic so far?

IS: Relaxed. I really enjoyed how suddenly everything moved slower. Speechless about how people's behavior changed from time to time. #toilet-paper… hahahahaha… no comment…. hahahahaha

I was very much focused on the basic things in life, especially because I had to recover from the chemotherapy and it’s side effects and finding my way back to life. Glad that the lockdown will be ending one day and we can be back on stage! There is no better audience like Heavy Metal! I am really missing that!

MiM: What bands would you recommend me to listen to from the Power Metal scene?

IS: Oha… I must say that I really like the late Helloween. Really kicks ass what they are doing. One supercool new thing in the orbit is Induction, by Tim Kanoa Hansen and friends. More progressive power metal. Touches my nerves in a very positive way.

IS: All I can say here is that I am very thankful for having the opportunity to play our music in front of these incredible, crazy Metalheads. Please keep your positive power alive, that helps all of us to make it through these difficult times.
