El próximo 22 de abril Märvel lanzará el que en mi opinión será el disco de Glam Rock más potente y enérgico de los últimos años. Esta es la razón por la que Made in Metal, habla con la banda, quienes están celebrando además sus veinte años de carrera.

MiM: ¡Hola chicos! ¿Cómo estás? Mi nombre es Raúl Cardona. Gracias por su tiempo para hablar y aprender sobre todo lo relacionado con este nuevo lanzamiento.

M: ¡Hola Raúl! Mi nombre es el Rey de Märvel y estoy feliz de hablarles sobre nuestro nuevo álbum. ¡España es un gran país para el rock!

MiM: ¡Veinte años de carrera! Es genial poder tener tanta energía a pesar de estos veinte. Cuéntame, ¿cómo lo ves?

M: ¡Es increíble que hayan pasado veinte años desde que empezamos la banda! Todavía nos divertimos creando y tocando música juntos y es una gran fuente de energía. Todavía nos vemos como perdedores en la escena y tenemos algo que demostrar, ¿¡tal vez eso es lo que nos da la energía!?

MiM: ¿Cómo fueron esos inicios? ¿Qué tan difícil ha sido para la banda ingresar al mundo de la industria musical?

M: Fue muy divertido al principio y no nos tomamos las cosas demasiado en serio. Con Märvel, un paso siempre ha llevado al siguiente y las cosas han crecido y progresado de forma muy dinámica. Aprendimos pronto a hacer todo por nosotros mismos, lo cual fue muy educativo y nos hizo fuertes e independientes.

MiM: El nuevo álbum “Graces Came With Malice” (The Sign Records, 2022) saldrá el 22 de abril. Tiene una fuerza increíble. Al escucharlo siento una mezcla de David Bowie y Kiss. ¿Qué me puedes decir al respecto?

M: ¡Muchas gracias! Kiss y David Bowie suenan como una combinación muy poderosa. Creo que es la primera vez que alguien menciona a Bowie como referencia a nuestra música. Sentimos que con este álbum hemos crecido tanto en términos de composición como de producción. Desde el principio decidimos que deberíamos permitir que cada canción alcanzara su máximo potencial. Creo que tiene nuestro sonido distintivo de Märvel, pero también es el álbum más diverso y poderoso que hemos hecho hasta ahora.

MiM: ¿Cuáles son tus principales influencias a la hora de componer nuevo material?

M: No se me ocurre nada especial, pero tiendo a mezclar y combinar todas mis referencias cuando escribo canciones. No trato de controlar qué tipo de canción debo escribir, sino que trato de soltarme y ver qué sale. En términos de producción, apuntamos a una producción brillante de finales de los 70, pero eso es solo la guinda del pastel, ya que sigue siendo el Märvel clásico en el centro del trabajo.

 MiM: El trabajo de producción, mezcla y masterización es impecable. ¿En qué estudio de grabación se realizó la grabación del disco?

M: ¡Muchas gracias! El álbum fue producido, diseñado y grabado por Märvel en nuestro propio estudio, Sunshine Factory (Solskensfabriken) en las llanuras de Östergötland en Suecia. Robert "Humbucker" Pehrsson mezcló el álbum en su estudio y luego fue masterizado por Magnus Lindberg.

MiM: Con nueve álbumes y una impresionante carrera de veinte años, ¿dónde te ves en cinco años?

M: En 2027, Märvel acaba de estrenar un musical en Broadway, inspirado en la película "Nudist Colony of the Dead". Hemos actuado en la Ceremonia del Premio Nobel frente al Rey y la Reina de Suecia. Probablemente hemos agregado algunos bajistas y bateristas más a la banda.

MiM: La canción que da título al álbum, a pesar de ser una balada, tiene una carga emocional inmensa. ¿Qué me puedes decir sobre este tema?

M: La expresión "Graces Came with Malice" me vino a la cabeza cuando escribía la canción principal. Sin revelar demasiado, significa que algo que se suponía que era hermoso y fantástico se convirtió en un pozo de oscuridad sin fondo. Si este álbum tiene un hilo rojo, se trata de conquistar esa oscuridad y salir de ese pozo con una sonrisa en la cara. 

MiM: “One Common Enemy” es un track rápido, con tintes de blues y rock and roll. ¡Excitante! ¿De qué trata el tema?

M: “One Common Enemy” es nuestra versión de envejecer, perder el contacto con tus amigos, tus pasiones y lo que solía hacerte feliz. Es un grito de guerra destinado a despertarnos a nosotros mismos y a los demás del cómodo sueño dorado que disfrutamos como empleados todos los días. Probablemente será un despertar doloroso, ¡pero valdrá la pena!

MiM: Musicalmente, ¿cuáles dirías que son las diferencias y similitudes entre este álbum y el anterior?

M: Ambos están escritos e interpretados por las mismas tres personas. Tenemos nuestra forma de escribir y tocar, por lo que probablemente pueda haber una similitud entre "Graces..." y nuestros álbumes anteriores. Sónicamente, creo que hemos perfeccionado nuestro oficio para que suene más grande, mejor y nuestra relación de trabajo con Robert se ha profundizado. La composición de la canción en el nuevo álbum proviene de un lugar totalmente diferente al del anterior álbum de larga duración y es muy personal en lo que respecta a las letras.

MiM: Normalmente, cuando lanzas un nuevo álbum, lo normal después es una gira. En las circunstancias actuales es difícil pensar en eso. ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum?

M: Tendremos la fiesta de lanzamiento en el jardín zoológico de Kolmårdens y tocaremos rock para todos los animales porque creemos que incluso las bestias enjauladas deben escuchar algo de rock 'n' roll. También estamos haciendo toneladas de entrevistas.

MiM: ¿Cómo has vivido el confinamiento y la pandemia hasta ahora?

M: Hemos tenido suerte ya que hemos podido trabajar desde casa. Además, ninguno de nosotros se vio tan afectado por el virus. Por supuesto que fue aburrido y una mierda no poder hacer giras y tocar, pero eso también es un pequeño precio a pagar por mantener a la gente a salvo.

"We have performed at the Nobel Prize Ceremony in front of the King and Queen of Sweden".

Next April 22nd Märvel will be releasing what in my opinion will be the most powerful and energetic Glam Rock album in recent years. This is the reason why Made in Metal, talks with the band, who are also celebrating it's twenty years on the road.

MiM: Hi guys! How are you? My name is Raúl Cardona. Thank you for your time to talk and learn about everything related to this new release.

M: Hey Raúl! My name is the King of Märvel and I'm happy to talk to you about our new album. Spain is a great country for rock!

MiM: Twenty years of career! It's great to be able to have so much energy despite these twenty. Tell me about it, how do you see it?

M: It's incredible that twenty years have passed since we started the band! We are still having a ball creating and playing music together and it's a great outlet for energy. We still see ourselves as underdogs in the scene and that we have something to prove, maybe that's what gives us the energy?!

MiM: How were those beginnings? How difficult has it been for the band to enter the world of the music industry?

M: It was very playful in the beginning and we didn't take things too seriously. With Märvel, one step has always led to the next and things have grown and progressed very dynamically. We learned early on to do everything by ourselves, which was very educational and made us strong and independent. 

MiM: The new album “Graces Came With Malice” (The Sign Records, 2022) will be out on April 22. It has incredible strength. Listening to it I feel a mixture of David Bowie and Kiss. What can you tell me about it?

M: Thanks a lot! Kiss and David Bowie sounds like a very powerful combination. I believe it's the first time that someone mentions Bowie as a reference to our music. We feel that with this album we have grown both in terms of songwriting and production. Early on we decided that each song should be allowed to reach its full potential. I think that it has our distinct Märvel sound but it's also the most diverse and powerful album we have done so far.

MiM: What are your main influences when composing new material?

M: Nothing special comes to mind but I tend to mix and combine all my references when writing songs. I don't try to control what type of song I should write but instead try to let loose and see what comes out. In terms of production, we aimed for a glossy late 70s production, but that's just the icing on the cake since it's still classic Märvel at the core.

 MiM: The production, mixing, and mastering work is impeccable. In which recording studio did the recording of the album take place?

M: Thanks so much! The album was produced, engineered, and recorded by Märvel at our own studio, the Sunshine Factory (Solskensfabriken) on the plains of Östergötland in Sweden. Robert "Humbucker" Pehrsson mixed the album in his studio and it was then mastered by Magnus Lindberg.

MiM: With nine albums and an impressive 20-year career, where do you see yourself in five years?

M: In 2027 Märvel has just released a musical on Broadway, inspired by the movie "Nudist Colony of the Dead". We have performed at the Nobel Prize Ceremony in front of the King and Queen of Sweden. We have probably added a few more bassists and drummers to the band.

MiM: The album's title track, despite being a ballad, has an immense emotional charge. What can you tell me about this topic?

M: The expression "Graces came with Malice" came into my head when writing the title track. Without revealing too much it means something that was supposed to be beautiful and fantastic turned into a bottomless pit of darkness. If this album has a red thread it's about conquering that darkness and climbing back out of that pit with a smile on your face. 

MiM: “One Common Enemy” is a fast track, with shades of blues and rock and roll. Exciting! What is the topic about?

M: “One Common Enemy” is our take on getting older, losing touch with your friends, your passions, and whatever used to make you happy. It’s a rallying cry meant to wake ourselves and others up from the comfortable golden slumber we enjoy as everyday clerks. It will probably be a painful awakening but it will be worth it!

MiM: Musically, what would you say are the differences and similarities between this album and the previous one?

M: They are both written and performed by the same three people. We've got our way of writing and playing so that probably can be a similarity between “Graces...” and our previous albums. Sonically I think we have honed our craft so that it sounds bigger and better and our working relationship with Robert has deepened. The songwriting on the new album comes from a totally different place than the previous full-length album and it's very personal when it comes to the lyrics.

MiM: Normally when you release a new album, the normal thing afterward is touring. In the current circumstances, it is difficult to think about that. What plans do you have to promote this album?

M: We will have the release party in Kolmårdens Zoological Garden and play rock to all the animals because we believe that even caged beasts must get some rock 'n' roll. We are also doing tons of interviews.

MiM: How have you experienced confinement and the pandemic so far?

M: We have been lucky since we've been able to work from home. Also, none of us were affected that heavily by the virus. Of course, it was boring and shitty not to be able to tour and play but that's also a small price to pay for keeping people safe.
