Rick Altzi es un cantante muy conocido desde que trabajaba en Masterplan, pero tiene una vida ocupada también cantando con Herman Frank, Gathering of King y como invitado con Magnus Karlsson, Circus of Rock, Boguslaw Balceraks Crylord, Aldaria, Hollow Haze y muchos más...

MiM: Rick, ¿me gustaría que me hablaras de tu infancia? ¿Había músicos en la familia? Pregunto para comprender tu talento.

RA: En realidad no, tengo parientes tanto por parte de mi padre como de mi madre que hacen música, así que está absolutamente allí, pero no directamente a mi alrededor cuando era niño.

MiM: Empezaste a tocar el bajo a los catorce años en varias bandas. ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de aquellos tiempos? ¿Qué te motivó a dejar el bajo como instrumento y decidirte por el micrófono o ser cantante?

RA: Toqué algo de guitarra antes de eso y mis padres siempre me apoyaron y me ayudaron a conseguir instrumentos para que pudiera tocar música y practicar. Toqué el bajo en un par de bandas durante mi adolescencia y me dio la oportunidad de desarrollar mi musicalidad, eso me ha ayudado mucho como cantante a veces para entender o ayudar en el proceso de composición de canciones.

Comenzar a cantar no fue una decisión que tomé, fue algo que sucedió cuando la banda en la que tocaba tuvo dificultades para encontrar un cantante. Había estado haciendo coros en la banda y cuando necesitámos un nuevo cantante, la banda quiso que probara como cantante principal y eso es todo.

MiM: ¿Cuéntame sobre la experiencia de trabajar con At Vance?

RA: Fue un sueño hecho realidad, me puse en contacto con Olaf para ver si tenía una canción que no se hubiera usado en un álbum y que de alguna manera pudiera tener en mis manos para poder grabar voces y promocionarme como cantante. Le envié una pequeña muestra de mi voz y me dijo que no le quedaban canciones, ¡pero que le gustaría que probara como cantante de At Vance!

Quiero decir, no tenía ninguna experiencia grabando voces, así que me estaba inclinando mucho en ese corto período de tiempo, pero me lo pasé muy bien tanto grabando álbumes como siendo capaz de crecer como líder en el escenario.

MiM: ¿Crees que la experiencia laboral acumulada con las bandas Helloween, King Diamond, Accept y Pain of Salvation te ha ayudado como profesional?

RA: He trabajado con gente de muchas bandas y siento que toda colaboración me da más entendimiento y herramientas para evolucionar como cantante y músico, así que definitivamente me ha ayudado en mi camino a ser un mejor cantante y músico.

MiM: Con Masterplan llevas diez años. ¿Cómo evaluarías todos estos años de trabajo con Roland Grapow?

RA: Siempre es divertido trabajar con Roland, es un buen tipo y es fácil trabajar con él tanto para grabar como para tocar en vivo. Hasta ahora hemos lanzado tres álbumes y tocado cientos de shows en vivo y aún es divertido encontrarnos en la banda, ¡nos divertimos mucho tocando en vivo! Hay un nuevo álbum de Masterplan en preparación y no puedo esperar para comenzar a grabar las voces.

MiM: ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de la grabación del álbum "PumpKings" (AFM Records, 2017)?

RA: Para mí es como hacer un álbum de versiones y lo estaba tratando en consecuencia, pero para Roland fue una oportunidad de poder volver a grabar esas grandes canciones con el sonido y el toque que no pudo cuando las grabó con Helloween. No hay forma de copiar vocalmente a esos grandes cantantes originales, así que decidí acercarme a los originales y solo ponerle un poco de amor.

MiM: ”All Eyes On Me” (RA Music, 2022) es un título muy sugerente para un álbum. Este disco es una joya del Hard Rock. Sonido espectacular y sorprendente. Las letras pegadizas y el riff y tu voz rasposa hacen que este álbum tenga todos los ojos puestos en él. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción musical?

RA: Sí, ”All Eyes on Me” proviene del arte que usé para la portada, está hecho por una chica local y el nombre del arte es todos los ojos puestos en mí, eso refleja el hecho de que cuando estás haciendo un solo álbum estás en el centro de atención y si algo sale mal es todo culpa tuya. Diseñé el folleto y la portada, todas las imágenes que usé fueron hechas por Victoria Nielsen en ”Art & Design” y el logo fue hecho por mí

MiM: ¿En qué estudio de grabación se hizo la voz? ¿Grabasteis los coros o colaboraron otros músicos?

RA: Grabé todas las voces en mi propio estudio y tuve ayuda de un par de personas para hacer los coros. Creo que sería aburrido si solo mi voz hiciera los coros, hay un par de chicos y dos chicas haciendo los coros también.

MiM: Este disco tiene varios invitados de lujo. Cuéntame, ¿cómo lograste juntar tanto talento?

RA: Se suponía que solo tenía personas con las que había estado trabajando, conocía o conocí en diferentes colaboraciones, pero terminó con algunas excepciones. Uno de los chicos con los que escribí la mayoría de las canciones había trabajado con Joel Hoekstra y era fanático de su obra. Fue un honor tenerlo tocando un solo en mi álbum.

MiM: Rick, en este momento, cuantas bandas cuentan contigo para cantar

RA: En este momento estoy haciendo álbumes y shows en vivo con Masterplan, Gathering of Kings y Herman Frank.

MiM: Estuvimos hablando con Herman Frank el año pasado cuando lanzó “Two for a Lie” y nos dijo que prefieres grabar las voces en tu propio estudio. ¿Por qué?

RA: Para mí es más relajado, puedo grabar a mi propio ritmo por la noche o en medio del día y eso hace que sea más fácil grabar cuando tienes ganas. Cuando tienes una cierta cantidad de días en el estudio puede ser realmente estresante y todo tiene que estar al 100% esos días, tu voz, estado de ánimo, inspiración son cosas que pueden hacer que una sesión de grabación sea más o menos exitosa. Me gusta comenzar la grabación de voces ya en las etapas de demostración cuando también estoy escribiendo letras y me da mucho tiempo para pensar y repensar melodías y arreglos vocales.

MiM: En ese CD hay una canción llamada “Stand Up and Fight” y tal vez porque el título de la canción es similar a una canción de Dio, imaginamos que cantaste como Ronnie, pero solo en esta canción. ¿Fue Ronnie James Dio una influencia en tu estilo de canto?

RA: Ronnie James Dio ha tenido un gran impacto en mí como músico y cantante, crecí escuchando a Dio, Whitesnake, Thunder, Bad Company y muchas otras bandas y géneros y esto sin duda ha tenido un impacto en mi estilo de canto.

MiM: ¿Crees que las canciones que escribes son muy diferentes para ser tocadas, por ejemplo, en Herman Frank u otra banda? ¿Por qué decidiste lanzarlas como solista?

RA: Las canciones que terminaron en mi álbum en solitario fueron escritas para que las usaran otros artistas, yo Ulrick y Pete, que hemos estado trabajando en la mayoría de las canciones del álbum, hicimos que estas canciones fueran grabadas por bandas que necesitaban canciones en sus álbumes. Cuando llegó Corona, teníamos alrededor de veinte canciones que estaban más o menos listas, pero debido a la falta de shows en vivo, las bandas tenían mucho tiempo libre para escribir sus propias canciones, así que decidimos usarlas para hacer un álbum en solitario. Ulrick está haciendo algunos coros y toca la guitarra acústica y Pete ha grabado todas las guitarras del álbum.

MiM: Usualmente trabajas con Magnus Karlsson, Hollow Haze y Gathering of Kings. ¿Hay solo colaboraciones o eres un miembro regular en estas bandas?

RA: Con Magnus y Hollow Haze solo me pidieron que hiciera una o dos canciones como invitado, pero en Gathering of Kings soy un miembro permanente y original.

MiM: ¿Estás abierto a trabajar con cualquier otra banda además de las anteriores que mencionamos?

RA: Si es una buena canción y todo se siente bien, siempre lo veo como una oportunidad para desafiarme a mí mismo y convertirme en un mejor cantante.

MiM: Me alegró ver que invitaste a Oliver Hartmann en una de tus canciones. Considero que Oliver debería tener más fama y fortuna. (Yo considero lo mismo cuando pienso en ti). Dime, ¿cómo surge la idea?

RA: Conocí a Oliver a lo largo de los años en festivales y otros espectáculos, es un tipo muy agradable y un gran guitarrista, lo más obvio quizás hubiera sido pedirle que cantara, pero quería presentarlo como guitarrista y ¡realmente hizo un gran solo en el álbum!

MiM: Rick, ¿te concentrarás solo en tu carrera en solitario o seguirás trabajando con otras bandas?

RA: Me considero un jugador de equipo y continuaré trabajando con la banda con la que trabajo, no diría que fue un álbum en solitario de una sola vez, pero se hizo durante un período en el que tenía mucho tiempo en mi manos y veamos si puedo encontrar el tiempo para hacer otro en el futuro.

MiM: ”Where Dreams Never Die”, es una canción con una letra muy emotiva, con mucho sentimiento. Una balada excelente. ¿Podrías hablarme de ello?

RA: La mayoría de las canciones del álbum son sobre el amor y las relaciones, y esta canción en particular es sobre nunca rendirse, podría ser sobre el amor, la vida o cualquier otra cosa que tengas frente a ti.

MiM: Voy a nombrar tres cantantes y en una palabra me gustaría que los definas. Jeff Scott Soto, Dino Jelusic y Myles Kennedy.

RA: Si tuviera que describir a estos tres fantásticos cantantes que menciono, ¿qué dirías?

MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar el álbum? ¿Conciertos o giras?

RA: No hay planes en este momento, tengo muchos shows por venir y no hay tiempo ahora para tocar en vivo con ALTZI, pero veamos en el futuro.

MiM: Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y los nuestros.

Rick Altzi is a very well-known singer since he was working in Masterplan, but he has a busy life also singing with Herman Frank, Gathering of King, and as a guest with Magnus Karlsson, Circus of Rock, Boguslaw Balceraks Crylord, Aldaria, Hollow Haze and many more...

MiM: Rick, I would like you to tell me about your childhood? Were there musicians in the family? I ask you to understand your talent.

RA: Not really, I have relatives on both my father's and my mother's side that do music so it’s absolutely there but not directly around me when I was a child.

MiM: You started playing bass at the age of fourteen in various bands. What memories do you have of those times? What motivated you to leave the bass as an instrument and decide on the microphone or to be a singer?

RA: I played some guitar before that and my parents have always been supportive and helped me out getting instruments so I could play music and practice. I played bass in a couple of bands during my teens and it gave me the opportunity to develop my musicality, which has helped me a lot as a singer sometimes to understand or help out in the songwriting process.

To start singing wasn’t a decision I made it was something that happened when the band i was playing in had a hard time finding a singer. I had been doing backing vocals in the band and when we needed a new singer the band wanted me to try out as the lead singer and that was it.

MiM: Tell me about the experience of working with At Vance?

RA: It was a dream come true, I had contacted Olaf to see if he had a song that hadn´t been used on an album that I could somehow get my hands on so I could record vocals and promote myself as a singer.

So I sent him a small sample of my vocals and he said that he didn’t have any leftover songs but he would like me to try out as a singer for At Vance!

I mean I had no experience at all recording vocals so I was learning a lot in that short period of time, but I had a great time both recording albums and being able to grow as a frontman on stage.

MiM: Do you think that the accumulated work experience with bands Helloween, King Diamond, Accept and Pain of Salvation has helped you as a professional?

RA: I have worked with people from many bands and I feel that all collaboration gives me more understanding and tools to evolve as a singer and musician, so yes it has definitely helped me on my way to be a better singer and musician.

MiM: With Masterplan you have been ten years. How would you assess all these years of working with Roland Grapow?

RA: It’s always fun to work with Roland, he’s a nice guy and easy to work with both when recording and playing live. So far we have released three albums and played hundreds of live shows it’s still fun to meet the band and we have so much fun playing live! There’s a new Masterplan album in the making and I can’t wait to start to record the vocals. 

MiM: What memories do you have of the recording of the "PumpKings Album" (AFM Records, 2017)?

RA: For me, it’s like doing a cover album and I was treating it accordingly, but for Roland it was an opportunity to be able to re-record those great songs again with the sound and touch that he wasn’t able to when recording them with Helloween. There's no way of vocally copying those great original singers so I decided to make it close to the original songs and just put a little bit of love on it.

MiM: "All Eyes On Me" (RA Music, 2022) is a very suggestive title for an album. This album is a jewel of Hard Rock. Spectacular and surprising sound. Catchy lyrics and riff and your gritty voice, make this album have all eyes on it. How was the process of recording and music production?

RA: Yes ”All Eyes on Me” comes from the artwork I used for the cover, it’s made by a local girl and the name of the art is all eyes on me, that reflects the fact that when you are doing a solo album you’re in the spotlight and if anything goes wrong it’s all on you. I designed the booklet and cover art, the pictures I used are all made by Victoria Nielsen at ”Art & Design” and the logo is made by me.

MiM: In which recording studio did the voice recording take place? Did you record the choirs or did other musicians collaborate?

RA: I recorded all vocals in my own studio and I have some help from a couple of people to do backing vocals. I think it would be boring if it was only my voice doing backing vocals, so there are a couple of guys and two girls doing backing vocals as well.

MiM: This album has several luxury guests. Tell me how you managed to gather so much talent?

RA: I was supposed to just have people I’ve been working with, know, or met in different collaborations, but it ended up with some exceptions.

One of the guys that I wrote most of the songs with had worked with Joel Hoekstra and being a fan of his playing it was an honor to have him play solo on my album.

MiM: Rick, at this moment, how many bands count on you to sing.

RA: Right now I’m doing albums and live shows with Masterplan, Gathering of Kings and Herman Frank.

MiM: We were talking to Herman Frank last year when he released “Two for a Lie” and he told us that you prefer to record the voices in your own studio. Why?

RA: For me, it’s more relaxed, I can record at my own pace at night or in the middle of the day and that makes it easier to record when you have a feeling for it.

When you have a certain amount of days in the studio it can be really stressful and everything has to be 100% those days, your voice, mood, and inspiration are things that can make a recording session more or less successful. I like to start the recording of vocals already in the demo stages when I’m also writing lyrics and it gives me plenty of time to think and rethink melodies and vocal arrangements. 

MiM: In that CD there is a song called “Stand Up and Fight” and maybe because the song title is similar to a Dio song, we imagine you sang like Ronnie, but only in this song. Was Ronnie James Dio an influence on your singing style?

RA: Of course, Ronnie James Dio has had a big impact on me as a musician and a singer, I was growing up listening to Dio, Whitesnake, Thunder, Bad Company, and many other band and genres and this has certainly made an impact on my style of singing. 

MiM: Do you think that the songs you write are very different to be played in, for example, Herman Frank or another band? Why did you decide to release them as a solo artist?

RA: The songs that ended up on my solo album were written to be used by other artists, I, Ulrick, and Pete that has been working on most of the songs on the album made these songs to be recorded by bands that needed songs on their albums. When Corona came we had about 20 songs that were more or less ready but due to the lack of live shows, bands really got a lot of spare time to write their own songs so we decided to use them to do a solo album. Ulrick is doing some backing vocals and plays acoustic guitar and Pete has recorded all the guitars on the album.

MiM: You usually work with Magnus Karlsson, Hollow Haze, and Gathering of Kings. Are there just collaborations or you are a regular member of these bands? 

RA: With Magnus and Hollow Haze I was just asked to do one or two songs as a guest, but in Gathering of Kings I’m a permanent and original member.

MiM: Are you open to work with any other band apart from the previous one we mention?

RA: If it’s a good song and everything feels ok I always see it as a chance to challenge myself and become a better singer.

MiM: It was glad to see that you invite Oliver Hartmann to one of your songs. I consider Oliver should be more fame and fortune. (I consider the same when I think about you). Tell me, how the idea comes from?

RA: I’ve met Oliver over the years on festivals and other shows and he’s a really nice guy and a great guitar player, the most obvious would maybe have been to ask him to sing but I wanted to feature him as a guitar player and he really did a great solo on the album! 

MiM: Rick, will you concentrate only on your solo career or will you continue working with other bands?

RA: I consider myself a team player and I will continue to work with the band I work with, I wouldn’t say it was a one-time solo album but it was made during a period when I had a lot of time on my hands and let’s see if I can find the time to do another one in the future. 

MiM: "Where Dreams Never Die", is a song with very emotional lyrics, with a lot of feeling. An excellent ballad. Could you tell me about it?

RA: I mean most of the songs on the album are about love and relationships and this particular song is about never giving up, it could be about love, life, or anything else you have in front of you. 

MiM: I will name 3 singers and in a word, I would like you to define them. Jeff Scott Soto, Dino Jelusic, and Myles Kennedy.

RA: If you should describe the three fantastic singers I mention, what would you say?

MiM: What plans do you have to promote the album? Concerts or tours?

RA: No plans right now, I have a lot of shows coming up and there’s no time right now to play live with ALTZI, but let’s see in the future.
