La banda australiana de Deathgrind, Remains, lanzó su álbum debut 'Grind 'Til Death' el 15 de julio a través de Spikerot Records/Disdain Records. Made in Metal habla con su vocalista Tonebone para que nos de detalles del disco y la formación.

 MiM: Son una banda relativamente nueva en la escena del metal. ¿Cómo fueron esos inicios? ¿Cómo surge la idea de formar la banda?

TB: Remains comenzaron originalmente en 2015, creo. Dave (guitarras), Jay (batería/voces) y otro compañero comenzaron a escribir música en ese entonces, pero quedó en el estante. Luego, a finales de 2018, salí con Dave y Jay y llegamos a la conclusión de que deberíamos comenzar una banda de grind. Así lo hicimos. Mencionaron que tenían algunas canciones escritas hace unos años que nunca despegaron, así que fue cuando pensamos en hacer Remains y escribir más canciones.

MiM: "Grind 'Til Death" (Spikerot Records/Disdain Records, 2022) es un álbum con un riff de guitarra áspero, contundente, de la vieja escuela, rápido y demoledor. ¿Qué me puedes decir de este álbum?

TB: ¡Este álbum es un maldito rompepelotas! Desde el principio escucharás riffs viciosos y blastbeats estruendosos que te harán explotar la cabeza. Cada canción que escuchas, no solo es pegadiza, sino que tiene su propio toque, estilos e influencias para hacer que cada una sea propia. Nadie que escuche este álbum se sentirá decepcionado y si lo estás, eres un farsante y morirás de una muerte brutal ¡jaja!

MiM: Los riffs de guitarra son agudos y rápidos. ¿En qué estudio de grabación tuvo lugar? ¿Quién fue su productor?

TB: El álbum fue grabado en tres estudios diferentes, las guitarras fueron grabadas en los estudios Mountain Top aquí en Melbourne por el mismo Dave, el álbum fue producido por la banda con Joe Haley haciendo la mezcla y masterización en Crawlspace Productions en Hobart, Tasmania. Estamos muy contentos con lo que hemos producido y viene en la escala Richter de 6,66, es fuerte, así que súbelo. 

MiM: Lo normal para las bandas de Grindcore y Deathgrind es sacar discos de 8 o 10 canciones. ¿Cómo surgió la idea de lanzar este álbum con 18 canciones?

TB: Hemos estado en bandas grind en el pasado Blood Duster, The Kill, Fuck I'm Dead y Captain Cleanoff, así que hacer un álbum con 8 o 10 canciones es simplemente estúpido para nosotros. El álbum solo duraría 10 o 15 minutos, ya que nuestra canción más larga dura poco más de 2 minutos. Entonces, al escribir para el álbum, tuvimos que producir algo que durara más de 30 minutos más o menos.

MiM: La voz en este álbum es áspera, fuerte. Contiene ira y rabia. ¡¡Es excelente!! ¿Como lo hace? ¿De dónde viene toda esa ira?

TB: ¡Gracias señor! Ira... de ninguna manera soy un hombre muy feliz, pero cuando tocas este género de música, como debes saber, debe contener el gruñido del monstruo de las galletas. Pero en serio, personalmente creo que estos son las mejores voces que he grabado en cualquier álbum que haya hecho en el pasado.

MiM: Cuéntame sobre la experiencia de tocar en vivo con bandas como Obituary y Cattle Decapitation.

TB: Es una buena manera de hacer llegar tu música a los fanáticos de bandas internacionales que tocan un género similar. Estoy seguro de que hay personas que ni siquiera van a espectáculos locales y solo verían artistas internacionales, para ellos verte actuar y escuchar tu música por primera vez es un honor para nosotros. Pero un par de nosotros hemos tocado con Obituary en el pasado, son grandes muchachos. Preferimos el gran escenario, los lugares más grandes y las multitudes más grandes, siempre es genial.

MiM: Me gustaría saber si desde un principio ya tenían muy claro el sonido que tendría la banda.

TB: Sí, estoy bastante seguro de que el tono y el sonido se crearon desde el principio.

MiM: ¿De qué tratan las letras de las canciones del álbum? ¿Cuál es el mensaje?

TB: Las letras del álbum comenzaron siendo tontas historias inventadas, luego pensé que era más fácil escribir sobre cosas que ya se conocían por las  columnas de noticias sobre asesinatos brutales en Australia e internacionalmente. Estos son los temas que elegí, no realmente sobre asesinos en serie. o cualquier cosa, solo asesinatos salvajes que han tenido lugar por lunáticos en toda regla. No hay mensaje, solo pura rigurosidad, ¡¡es una locura!!

MiM: Cuando se trata de componer material nuevo, ¿cuáles son tus principales influencias?

TB: Todos escuchamos cosas similares pero también escuchamos estilos diferentes. El metal escandinavo ha sido una gran influencia para Dave y para mí, pero todos disfrutamos de todos los tipos de heavy metal. Eso es lo que somos, somos headbangers. Hay demasiadas bandas para mencionar que nos habrían influenciado para hacer lo que hacemos.

MiM: ¿Cómo te ha afectado la situación de la pandemia y el confinamiento en los últimos dos años?

TB: Afectó a la banda de alguna manera. Solo hicimos algunos shows antes de la pandemia y estábamos listos para comenzar a grabar, aunque durante el confinamiento esto no iba a suceder. Así que terminamos escribiendo más canciones para el álbum, lo que tenía que suceder en algún momento. Así que básicamente hubo mucha preparación para el álbum, encontrar una etiqueta para publicarlo, organizar el arte, buscar un fotógrafo, que lo haría, la mezcla y masterización, etc... así que fue bueno en cierto modo también en el que no tuvimos que apresurar las cosas como lo hemos hecho en el pasado con bandas anteriores.

MiM: ¿Qué bandas de la escena metalera australiana me recomiendan escuchar?

TB: Hay tantas bandas geniales en Australia en este momento que también tenemos amigos en muchas de ellas. Pero por nombrar algunos, diría Ploughshare, Faceless Burial, Internal Rot, The Plague, Carcinoid, Sithlord, Ruins, Choof, Sanctioned y Pizza Death, todos son grandes bandas en vivo, pero como dije, hay demasiados para mencionar.

MiM: Excelente diseño de portada de disco. ¿Quién estaba a cargo y qué representa?

TB: El artista que elegimos es un caballero llamado Mitchell Nolte, ha hecho portadas para muchas bandas y nos gusta lo que crea. Supongo que su estilo puede transmitirse de diferentes maneras, puedes presentarle ideas o revisar algunos de sus trabajos... tiene mucho talento. La pieza que elegimos fue algo que nos llamó la atención a primera vista. Tenía un borrador y luego lo convirtió en una obra maestra para nosotros.

MiM: ¿Gira del proyecto o conciertos en los próximos meses?

TB: Anunciamos una gira por la costa este aquí en Australia llamada "Las 6 fechas de la muerte" tocando en algunos festivales increíbles y nuestros propios espectáculos principales como parte de la gira promocional. Estas fechas las puedes ver en nuestras redes sociales. Ojalá podamos viajar a Europa, Japón o los EE. UU. en 2023, estos son los lugares en los que estamos trabajando. Pero por ahora, mientras tanto, realmente disfrutamos tocar en vivo en nuestro país de origen porque amamos hacer lo que hacemos y eso es actuar para los fanáticos de la música heavy metal, ¡la legión Remainiac!

Australian Deathgrind band Remains will be releasing their debut album "Grind 'Til Death" on July 15 via Spikerot Records/Disdain Records. Made in Metal talks with the band to find out everything about this album and the history of the band.

 MiM: They are a relatively new band on the metal scene. How were those beginnings? How did the idea of forming the band come about?

TB: Remains started originally back in 2015 I think. Dave (guitars),  Jay (Drums/Vokills), and another mate began writing music back then but it sort of got put on the shelf. Then late 2018 I was out with Dave and Jay and we came to the conclusion that we should start a grind band. So we did. They mentioned they had some songs written from a few years back from this band that never really took off, so that's when we thought to do Remains and write more songs.

MiM: "Grind 'Til Death" (Spikerot Records/Disdain Records, 2022) is an album with a rough, forceful, old-school, fast, and crushing guitar riff. What can you tell me about this album?

TB: This album is a fucking ball tearer! From the get-go, you will hear vicious riffs, and thundering blast beats that will make your head explode. Every song you hear, not only is catchy but has its own twist and styles of influences thrown in to make every song its own. No one who hears this album will be disappointed and if you are, you are a poser and you will die a brutal death haha!

MiM: The guitar riffs are sharp and fast. In which recording studio did it take place? Who was its producer?

TB: The album was recorded at three different studios, guitars were recorded at Mountain Top studios here in Melbourne by Dave himself, and the album was produced by the band with Joe Haley doing the mix and mastering at Crawlspace Productions in Hobart, Tasmania. We are very happy with what we have produced and come in on the Richter scale at 6.66, it's loud so turn it up. 

MiM: The normal thing for Grindcore and Deathgrind bands is to release albums with 8 or 10 songs. How did the idea of releasing this album with 18 songs come about?

TB: We have been in grind bands in the past Blood Duster, The Kill, Fuck I’m Dead and Captain Cleanoff so doing an album with 8 or 10 songs is just stupid to us. The album would only be 10 or 15 minutes only as our longest song goes for just over 2 minutes. So, writing for the album we had to produce something that would clock in over 30 minutes or so. 

MiM: The voice on this album is rough, and strong. It contains anger and rage. It's excellent!! As it does? Where does all that anger come from?

TB: Thank you, sir! Anger…no way I am a very happy man, but when you play this genre of music as you must know it must contain the grunt from the cookie monster. But seriously I think personally these are the best vokills I have recorded on any album I have done in the past.  

MiM: Tell me about the experience of playing live with bands like Obituary and Cattle Decapitation?

TB: It’s a good way to get your music out to fans of international bands that play a similar genre. I’m sure there are people out there who don’t even go to local shows and would only see international artists, for them to see you perform and hear your music for the first time is an honor to us. But a couple of us have played with Obituary in the past, they are great guys. We prefer the big stage, bigger venues, and bigger crowds, it's always killer. 

MiM: I would like to know if from the beginning they were already very clear about the sound that the band would have.

TB: Yes, I’m pretty sure that the tone and sound were created from the get-go.

MiM: What are the lyrics of the songs on the album about? Which is the message?

TB: The lyrics for the album started off from being dumb made-up stories then I thought it easier to write about stuff that is already written in news columns about brutal murders from around Australia/internationally these are the topics I chose, not really about serial killers or anything just savage murders that have taken place by full-blown lunatics. There’s no message, just pure strictness, it's crazy!!

MiM: When it comes to composing new material, what are your main influences?

TB: We all listen to similar stuff but also listen to different styles as well. Scandinavian metal has been a big influence for Dave and I, but we all do enjoy all types of heavy metal. That is who we are, we are headbangers. There are too many bands to mention that would have influenced us to do what we do. 

MiM: How has the situation of the pandemic and confinement affected you in the last two years?

TB:  It did affect the band in some way. We only did a few shows before the pandemic and were ready to start recording the album, although during lockdowns this was not going to happen. So we just ended up writing more songs for the album which had to happen at some point. So basically a lot of preparation was happening behind the scenes for the album, finding a label to put it out, getting artwork organized, hunting down a photographer, who’s going to do the mix and master, etc… so it was good in a way also where we didn't have to rush things like we have done in the past with previous bands. 

MiM: What bands from the Australian metal scene do you recommend I listen to?

TB: There are so many killer bands in Australia at the moment we have friends in a lot of them also. But to name a few I’d say Ploughshare, Faceless Burial, Internal Rot, The Plague, Carcinoid, Sithlord, Ruins, Choof, Sanctioned and Pizza Death, they’re all great live bands but like I said there are too many to mention. 

MiM: Excellent album cover design. Who was in charge and what does he represent?

TB: The artist we chose is a gentleman called Mitchell Nolte, he has done cover art for many bands and we like what he creates. His style can come across in different ways I guess, you can pitch ideas to him or go through some of his works…he is very talented. The piece we chose was something that stood out for us at first glance. He had a rough sketch and then turned it into a masterpiece for us.

MiM: Project tour or concerts in the coming months?

TB: We announced an east coast tour here in Australia called “The 6 Dates Of Death” playing a few awesome festivals and our own headlining shows as part of the promotional tour. These dates you can see on our socials. Hopefully, we can head to Europe, Japan, or the U.S in 2023, these are the places we are working on. But for now, in the meantime, we're really enjoying playing live in our home country because we love doing what we do and that's performing for fans of heavy metal music, the Remainiac legion!
