"Estos diez años han sido muy intensos; lleno de grandes cosas"
La banda italiana Diplomatics, lanzará su tercer álbum titulado 'Is It Time To Fly?' el 16 de diciembre vía Go Down Records. Un disco ecléctico donde el Funk, el Punk y el Garage Rock se unen en una mezcla muy interesante. Made in Metal habla con el guitarrista y miembro fundador Seth, para conocer todo sobre este álbum y la historia de la banda.
MiM: Son una banda formada en el 2013. ¿Cómo surge la idea de formar la banda? ¿Cómo han sido estos 10 años de carrera? ¿Cómo valoraría el trabajo realizado en todo este tiempo?
TD: La idea fue mía. Tenía muchas ganas de tocar rock'n'roll y punk rock de los 70, aportando un impulso de energía a la escena musical underground italiana. Estos diez años han sido muy intensos; lleno de grandes cosas y con algunos momentos difíciles, como algunos cambios de alineación y por supuesto la pandemia. Por suerte, la pasión por jugar juntos siempre está encendida y nos permitió seguir adelante. Hemos realizado giras por Italia y Europa, así que podemos decir que ha sido una buena década y realmente apreciamos el trabajo realizado hasta ahora. Mirando hacia atrás, haríamos algunas cosas de manera diferente, como viajar aún más, porque cuanto más tiempo pasa, más difícil es viajar, dejando niños y responsabilidades por muchos días.
MiM: “Is it time to fly?” (Go Down Records, 2022) es un excelente disco. Un auténtico homenaje a las grandes bandas americanas de Funk y Rock and Roll. Se aprecian influencias muy marcadas de sonidos latinos y caribeños. ¿Qué me puedes decir de este disco?
TD: Las canciones de este nuevo álbum se desarrollaron de diferentes maneras. Empezamos a componer 'Jungle' y 'Dancing All Alone' en 2017, pero las completamos entre finales de 2021 y principios de 2022. 'Nevah' y 'Irish Whiskey' se escribieron en 2019. Las demás se formaron justo antes de las sesiones de grabación, entre finales de 2021 y la primavera de 2022. Supongo que empezamos a trabajar justo después del lanzamiento de nuestro disco anterior. Necesitábamos cinco años para darle al álbum la dirección deseada, eso es mucho tiempo, pero también considera el parón por la pandemia y las muchas giras que hicimos mientras tanto, ¡jajaja! Este álbum suena más moderno, en comparación con los anteriores, porque está contaminado por varias influencias musicales: New Wave, Post-Punk, Funk y muchas bandas contemporáneas como Parquet Courts, Idles, Fontaines DC y Yard Act. El ambiente brasileño de la canción “Jungle”, por otro lado, está inspirado en Tim Maia, Joge Ben Jor y la samba.
MiM: "Dancing All Alone" es una canción donde las influencias de bandas como Rolling Stone son muy evidentes. ¿Estás de acuerdo?
TD: ¡Sí, así es! Los Rolling Stones siempre han sido nuestra máxima referencia y siguen siendo fundamentales para nosotros. ¡Queríamos una canción con un sonido clásico que hiciera bailar a la gente!
MiM: ¡El solo de saxofón de Edoardo Brunello en "Dancing All Alone" es espectacular! ¿Edoardo es empírico o tiene estudios académicos?
TD: Edoardo es un músico profesional, que estudió música académicamente. Toca con muchas bandas de jazz de primer nivel. Es un músico increíble.
MiM: ¿Cómo surge la idea del sonido tan peculiar y qué lo distingue creando un sello único en la banda?
TD: El objetivo era tener un sonido enérgico y potente, pero también original y moderno en comparación con nuestros discos anteriores. Esto lo logramos gracias al trabajo de los profesionales Elia Guglielmi de Il Baito Recording Studio y Maurizio Baggio de La Distilleria Produzioni Musicali. Ambos fueron capaces de hacer que nuestro clásico sonido analógico sea moderno y genial.
MiM: Me gustaría saber si desde un principio ya tenían muy claro el sonido que tendría la banda.
TD: Teníamos algunas ideas claras desde el principio, pero el sonido tomó forma definitiva en el último período de producción del álbum.
MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo al componer nuevo material? ¿Es un proceso colaborativo entre todos o recae en una o dos personas?
TD: A diferencia de los álbumes anteriores, este vio mucha más colaboración entre todos. Cada músico aportó sus propias ideas y sonidos.
MiM: El trabajo de producción, mezcla y masterización es impecable. A. ¿De quién era el cargo? ¿En qué estudio de grabación se realizó la grabación del disco?
TD: ¡Muchas gracias! El álbum fue grabado por Elia Guglielmi en Il Baito, un hermoso estudio de grabación ubicado en las montañas cercanas a nuestra patria. Luego fue mezclado y masterizado por Maurizio Baggio en La Distilleria Produzioni Musicali en Bassano del Grappa. Maurizio ya ha colaborado con muchas bandas importantes como Soft Moon y Boy Harsher. Las dos canciones "Nevah" y "Irish Whiskey" fueron grabadas por Bruno Barcella en T.U.P. Estudio.
MiM: Normalmente, cuando sacas un disco nuevo, lo normal después es darle vueltas. ¿Qué planes tenéis para promocionar este disco?
TD: Nuestro plan es reproducir este álbum en todas partes, comenzando en Italia y luego en toda Europa. La gira promocional está en planificación, pero los primeros conciertos ya están programados para principios de 2023. The Italian band Diplomatics, will be releasing their third album titled 'Is It Time To Fly?' on December 16 under the Go Down Records label. An eclectic album where Funk, Punk, and Garage Rock come together in a very interesting mix. Made in Metal talks with the guitar player and founding member Seth, to find out everything about this album and the history of the band.
MiM: They are a band formed in 2013. How did the idea of forming the band come about? How have these 10 years of career been? How would you value the work done in all this time?
TD: The idea was mine. I really wanted to play 70s rock'n'roll and punk rock, bringing a boost of energy to the Italian underground music scene. These ten years have been very intense; full of great things and with some difficult moments, such as some lineup changes and of course the pandemic. Luckily, the passion for playing together is always burning and it allowed us to go ahead. We have toured across Italy and Europe, so we can say it's been a good decade and we really appreciate the work done so far. Looking back, we would do some things differently, such as touring even more, because the more time passes, the harder it is to travel, leaving children and responsibilities for many days.
MiM: “Is It Time To Fly?” (Go Down Records, 2022) is an excellent album. A true tribute to the great American Funk and Rock and Roll bands. Very marked influences of Latin and Caribbean sounds are appreciated. What can you tell me about this record?
TD: The songs on this new album were developed in different ways. We started composing ‘Jungle’ and ‘Dancing All Alone’ in 2017, but completed them between late 2021 and early 2022. ‘Nevah’ and ‘Irish Whiskey’ were written in 2019. The others were made up just before the recording sessions, between the end of 2021 and the spring of 2022. I guess we started to work right after the release of our previous record. We needed five years to give the album the desired direction, that is a long time, but also consider the break due to the pandemic and the many tours we did in the meantime, hahaha! This album sounds more modern, compared to the previous ones, because it is contaminated by various musical influences: New Wave, Post-Punk, Funk, and many contemporary bands such as Parquet Courts, Idles, Fontaines DC, and Yard Act. The Brazilian mood of the song “Jungle”, on the other hand, is inspired by Tim Maia, Jorge Ben Jor, and samba.
MiM: "Dancing All Alone" is a song where the influences of bands like Rolling Stone are very evident. Do you agree?
TD: Yeah, that’s right! The Rolling Stones have always been our top reference and remain fundamental to us. We wanted a classic-sounding song that makes people dancing!
MiM: Edoardo Brunello's saxophone solo in "Dancing All Alone" is spectacular! Is Edoardo empirical or does he have academic studies?
TD: Edoardo is a professional musician, who studied music academically. He plays with many top-level jazz bands. He is an amazing musician.
MiM: How did the idea of the sound so peculiar and what distinguishes it from creating a unique stamp in the band come about?
TD: The goal was to have an energetic, powerful sound, but also original and modern compared to our previous records. We achieved this thanks to the work of professionals Elia Guglielmi of Il Baito Recording Studio and Maurizio Baggio of La Distilleria Produzioni Musicali. Both were able to make our classic analog sound modern and cool.
MiM: I would like to know if from the beginning they were already very clear about the sound that the band would have.
TD: We had some clear ideas since the beginning, but the sound took final shape in the last period of album production.
MiM: How is the creative process when composing new material? Is it a collaborative process between everyone or does it fall on one or two people?
TD: Unlike previous albums, this one saw a lot more collaboration between everyone. Each musician brought his own ideas and sounds.
MiM: The production, mixing, and mastering work is impeccable. A. Whose position was it? In which recording studio did the recording of the album take place?
TD: Thank you so much! The album was recorded by Elia Guglielmi at Il Baito, a beautiful recording studio placed in the mountains nearby our homeland. Then it was mixed and mastered by Maurizio Baggio at La Distilleria Produzioni Musicali in Bassano del Grappa. Maurizio has already collaborated with many important bands such as Soft Moon and Boy Harsher. The two songs "Nevah" and "Irish Whiskey" were recorded by Bruno Barcella at T.U.P. Studio.
MiM: Normally when you put out a new record, the normal thing to do afterward is to spin it. What plans do you have to promote this record?
TD: Our plan is to play this album everywhere, starting in Italy and then across Europe. The promotional tour is in planning, but the first gigs are already scheduled in early 2023.
