La banda danesa de Extreme Metal, The Arcane Order, compuesta por miembros de bandas como Soilwork, Møl y HateSphere, lanzó su nuevo álbum 'Distortions From Cosmogony' el 9 de junio a través de  Black Lion Records. Excelente oportunidad para que Made in Metal charle con Flemming, el fundador y compositor de la banda, para saber todo sobre este nuevo lanzamiento.

MiM: ¿Cuál es el concepto musical y estético detrás del nombre The Arcane Order y el nombre de este nuevo álbum?

TAO: Bueno, para nuestro nombre, cuando se me ocurrió allá por 2005, queríamos un nombre que fuera un poco diferente, y algo que de alguna manera pudiera hacer un paralelo con nuestra música. Música oscura, extrema y... arcana. De hecho, empezamos como "Scavenger" en 2002, creo que lo fue, pero Metal Blade, nuestra primera compañía discográfica, insistió en que cambiáramos el nombre, ya que había otras bandas en ese momento llamadas Scavenger. No sabíamos nada de eso, pero acordamos cambiar el nombre a The Arcane Order y, como saben, nos hemos quedado con eso desde entonces. En cuanto al nombre del álbum, el álbum es en realidad un álbum conceptual. La compensación temática del álbum se centra en el poder de las historias y cómo el hombre a través de la deificación o la demonización en las narrativas. Hemos buscado consuelo y seguridad en el concepto de padres antiguos, madres divinas, héroes, monarcas y dioses a lo largo de la historia a través de la narración de mitos y leyendas para poner propósito y sentido a nuestra existencia. Pero incluso en una sociedad moderna resplandecientemente secular y diversa, todavía somos presa de la necesidad de hacer dioses o demonios de nuestros semejantes para que se adapten a nuestra propia narrativa o escapen de la carga del pensamiento crítico y la elección. Las canciones desde un punto de vista lírico se inspiran en las clásicas figuras mitológicas griegas que o bien desafían la jerarquía divina, buscan favores entre seres eternos para controlar su destino o, por último, abrazan el caos de la autonomía.

MiM: "Distortions From Cosmogony" (Black Lion Records, 2023) tiene un sonido oscuro, pesado y cortante, con algunos pasajes melódicos y una potente base de bajo y batería. Arreglos y producción bien concebida. ¿Qué me puedes decir de este álbum? ¿De que se trata?

TAO: Desde un punto de vista musical, queríamos continuar con la base de lo que es The Arcane Order. Significa buena producción, buena musicalidad y metal extremo combinado con una melodía oscura para crear drama y una sensación épica en la música. Queríamos crear un álbum que fuera un poco más directo al grano que los álbumes anteriores, y que al mismo tiempo tuviera un poco más de influencias de Black Metal y partes progresivas. Casi me ha encantado trabajar con capas de música. Así que hago las "partes básicas" de la música y sigo agregando capas de armonías de guitarra, y luego, además de eso, capas de cosas orquestales y de sintetizador para agregar atmósfera, melodía, épica y, a veces, una sensación espeluznante a la música.

MiM: ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción? ¿Quién estuvo a cargo de la producción y en qué estudio de grabación se llevó a cabo?

TAO: Grabamos la batería en el estudio de Jacob Hansen, las voces en el estudio de Jacob Bredahl (ex cantante de Hatesphere) y las guitarras se grabaron en mi casa. De hecho, el bajo en esta grabación también lo tocó Jacob Hansen, en su propio estudio, ya que en el momento de la grabación no teníamos un bajista. Jacob es un músico excelente, así que fue un placer que nos ayudara también con las tareas del bajo.

MiM: ¿Cómo fue trabajar con Jacob Hansen ((Aborted, Arch Enemy, Volbeat, Katatonia entre otros)?

TAO: Hemos estado trabajando con Jacob desde nuestro primer álbum en 2005. De hecho, también en nuestra promoción de 2003, cuando nos llamaban Scavenger. Así que nosotros, y especialmente yo, lo conocemos desde hace muchos años y somos buenos amigos. También estuve tocando con él en "Invocator" durante 10 años. Ya que hemos trabajado con él tantas veces, siempre es un placer trabajar con él. Sabe exactamente lo que queremos, conoce nuestras capacidades y límites, y es un tipo muy divertido y agradable con quien estar, por lo que siempre es un gran placer. Aparte de eso, obviamente hace muy buenas producciones.

MiM: "Distortions From Cosmogony", a pesar de tener un sonido Extreme Metal, es un disco muy técnico en cuanto al trabajo de los músicos y además tiene unos arreglos orquestales y melódicos espectaculares. Me gustaria saber si desde un principio ya tuvieron muy claro el sonido que tendria la banda?

MiM: Bueno, más o menos. He estado escribiendo toda la música para TAO desde el principio y mi compensación siempre ha sido crear metal extremo, pero combinado con elementos paisajísticos épicos con partes melódicas y orquestales también, como habrás notado. Así que definitivamente es el sonido de la banda y algo que continuaremos persiguiendo también en los próximos álbumes. Está en el ADN de la banda. Además, creo que hace que nuestro metal bastante extremo sea más fácil de escuchar, ya que el material extremo es abrupto por algunas partes donde puedes respirar y dejar que las cosas más melódicas se asienten.

MiM: El trabajo vocal de Kim Song Sternkopf es excelente. Se nota el dominio de varios registros vocales. ¿Tiene formación académica o es empírica?

MiM: ¡Gracias! Estamos muy contentos con lo que aporta a la banda, y todavía recuerdo la primera vez que escuchamos sus demos de las canciones y quedamos completamente impresionados. Kim ha tenido un poco de formación, pero es principalmente autodidacta. Creo que una de las cosas que le gustan de The Arcane Order es que puede usarlo como un patio de recreo para su voz. En su otra banda, Møl, está algo limitado a cierto estilo, pero en TAO puede hacer muchas picaduras diferentes y realmente mostrar su excelente voz. Nos da más posibilidades como banda tener un tipo con ese registro vocal seguro.

MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum? ¿Conciertos o giras programadas en este nuevo año?

TAO: De hecho, tenemos tres agencias de relaciones públicas diferentes trabajando para nosotros y el álbum, por lo que estamos tratando de obtener la mayor cantidad de información posible. Además, nuestro plan es tocar mucho más en vivo que en el pasado, lo que también significa trabajos y giras internacionales. Sin embargo, es un poco confuso, ya que los otros chicos están ocupados con Soilwork, Møl y Hatesphere, y yo también tengo mis propias bandas, pero trataremos de sacarles el máximo provecho posible. Por ahora no hay ninguna gira programada, pero empezaremos a trabajar en planes en breve.

Danish Extreme Metal band The Arcane Order, made up of members from bands like Soilwork, Møl and HateSphere, released their new album "Distortions From Cosmogony" on June 9th under Black Lion Records. Excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to chat with Flemming, the founder and songwriter of the band, to find out everything about this new release.

MiM: What is the musical and aesthetic concept behind the name The Arcane Order and the name of this new album?

TAO: Well for our name, when I came up with it back around 2005, we wanted a name that was a bit different and something that somehow could draw a parallel to our music. Music that is dark, extreme, and… arcane. We actually started out as “Scavenger” back in 2002, I think it was, but Metal Blade, our first record company, insisted we change the name, since there were other bands at the time called Scavenger. We didn’t know about that but agreed to change the name to The Arcane Order, and as you know we have stuck with that ever since. As for the name of the album, the album is actually a concept album. The thematic offset of the album is centered around the power of stories and how man through either deification or demonization in narratives. We have sought comfort and security in the concept of ancient fathers, divine mothers, heroes, monarchs, and Gods throughout history through retelling myths and legends to put purpose and meaning behind our existence. But even in a glowingly secular and diverse modern society, we still fall prey to the need of making Gods or Demons of our fellow men to either suit our own narrative or escape the burden of critical thinking and choice. The songs from a lyrical standpoint take inspiration from the classic Greek mythological figures that either challenge the divine hierarchy, seek favors among eternal beings to control their destiny or, lastly embrace the chaos of autonomy.

MiM: "Distortions From Cosmogony" (Black Lion Records, 2023) has a dark, heavy and cutting sound, with some melodic passages and a powerful bass and drum base. Arrangements and production well conceived. What can you tell me about this album? What's it about?

TAO: From a musical point of view, we wanted to continue the base of what is The Arcane Order. Meaning good production, good musicianship and extreme metal paired with dark melody to create drama and an epic feel in the music. We wanted to create an album that was a bit more straight to the point than the previous albums, while at the same time having a bit more Black Metal influences as well as progressive parts. I have almost loved working with layers of music. So I make the “ground parts” of the music and I continue to add layers of guitar harmonies, and

then on top of that layers of orchestral and synth stuff to add atmosphere, melody, epicness, and sometimes an eerie feel to the music.

MiM: How was the recording and production process? Who was in charge of the production and in which recording studio did it take place?

TAO: We recorded the drums in Jacob Hansen studio, the vocals in Jacob Bredahl (ex-Hatesphere singer)’s studio, and the guitars were all recorded back at my place. Actually, the bass on this recording was played by Jacob Hansen as well, in his own studio, since we at the time of the recording did not have a bass player. Jacob is an excellent musician, so it was our pleasure to have him help us out in bass duties as well.

MiM: How was working with Jacob Hansen ((Aborted, Arch Enemy, Volbeat, Katatonia among others)?

TAO: We’ve been working with Jacob ever since our first album in 2005. Actually, also on our promo from 2003, when we were called Scavenger. So we, and especially I, have known him for many years and are good friends. I was playing with him in "Invocator" too for 10-ish years. Since we have worked with him so many times, it’s always a pleasure to work with him. He knows exactly what we want, he knows our capabilities and limits, and he’s an all-round fun and pleasant guy to be around, so it’s always a huge pleasure. Other than that, he obviously makes really good productions.

MiM: "Distortions From Cosmogony", despite having an Extreme Metal sound, is a very technical album in terms of the work of the musicians and also has spectacular orchestral and melodic arrangements. I would like to know if from the beginning they were already very clear about the sound that the band would have?

MiM: Well, more or less. I have been writing all the music for TAO since the beginning and my offset has always been to create extreme metal, but combined with epic landscaping stuff with melodic and orchestra parts as well, as you have noticed. So it’s definitely the sound of the band and something we will continue to pursue on coming albums as well. It’s just in the DNA of the band. Plus, I think it makes our quite extreme metal more listenable since the extreme stuff is abrupted by some parts where you can breathe and let the more melodic stuff set in.

MiM: Kim Song Sternkopf's vocal work is excellent. The mastery of various vocal registers is noted. Does he have academic training or is it empirical?

MiM: Thanks! We are extremely happy about what he brings to the band, and I still remember the first time we heard his demos for the songs and were completely blown away. Kim has had a bit of training but is mainly self-taught. I think one of the things he likes about The Arcane Order is he can use it as a playground for his voice. In his other band Møl he is somewhat limited to a certain style, but in TAO he can do a lot of different stings and really showcase his excellent vocals. It gives us more possibilities as a band to have a guy with that vocal register for sure.

MiM: What plans do you have to promote this album? Are concerts or tours scheduled in this new year?

TAO: We actually have three different PR agencies working for us and the album, so we are trying to get as much as possible out there. Also, our plan is to play a lot more lives than we have done in the past, also meaning international jobs and tours. It’s a bit of a puzzle though, since the other guys are busy with Soilwork, Møl, and Hatesphere, and I have my own bands as well, but we will try to get the most out of it that we can. For now, no tour is scheduled, but we will start working on the plans shortly.
