'Spell Of The Crimson Eye' es el segundo álbum de los fuzzers alemanes Wolf Prayer. Lenta pero laboriosamente llega a los oídos y corazones de sus oyentes. Cualquiera que, en medio del estrés de la vida cotidiana, se tome el tiempo de escuchar el álbum en paz y tranquilidad, idealmente varias veces, notará cómo las canciones crecen y florecen. Este álbum será lanzado el 6 de octubre bajo el sello Barhill Records. Excelente oportunidad para que Made in Metal converse con Jan Sprengard, guitarrista y vocalista de la banda.
MiM: “Spell of the Crimson Eye” (Barhill Records, 2023) es un álbum con un sonido lento, tranquilo, pero pesado y áspero. ¿Es eso así? ¿Cuéntame sobre este álbum?
WP: Estamos convencidos de que con “Spell of the Crimson Eye” hemos desarrollado nuestro sonido, pero nos hemos mantenido fieles a nuestro estilo musical. El álbum es más directo y confuso que su predecesor. La atención se centró en expandir y manifestar nuestro sonido. También era importante que transfiriéramos la pesadez que tenemos en los shows en vivo a la grabación del segundo álbum. En este sentido, nos dedicamos más tiempo a las grabaciones y experimentamos con diferentes efectos, como distorsión analógica o efectos estéreo. O darle más libertad y alcance al sintetizador y al órgano. Todas las canciones fueron creadas de forma privada en casa, trabajadas en la sala de ensayo y finalizadas en el estudio. Somos felices si calma, lento significa más fuerte o más intenso. Al grabar “Spell of the Crimson Eye”, que volvimos a grabar en los Love Station Studios en Alemania, también experimentamos con diferentes micrófonos y distancias de los amplificadores individuales, grabación estéreo o grabación mono. Se utilizaron amplificadores Hiwatt, Orange o Marshall tanto para la guitarra como para el bajo para lograr el sonido deseado, que buscábamos de nuevo en cada canción. Con este punto de partida sonoro perfecto para nosotros, Christian Schmid perfeccionó la mezcla terminada con mucho amor y paciencia desde Viena, en colaboración con Jan (guitarra, voz y visuales). Christian Schmid también experimentó mucho con la mezcla, los efectos digitales o la espacialidad de la grabación para hacer justicia al sonido deseado por cada miembro, el ingeniero de grabación y las propias necesidades de Christian Schmid. WP: Creo que te refieres a "Luna", que es nuestro primer sencillo de "Spell of the Crimson Eye". La canción es un homenaje al programa Apollo de la NASA (1969-1972), los alunizajes asociados, pero, sobre todo, como dice el título. sugiere, a la compañera mística de la Tierra: la Luna. WP: La canción trata sobre el olvido, más precisamente sobre el olvido relacionado con la enfermedad de la demencia de Alzheimer, un trastorno incurable del cerebro. Debido a la muerte de las células nerviosas del cerebro, las personas afectadas se vuelven cada vez más olvidadizas, confusas y desorientadas. Ya no se pueden realizar actividades habituales y sencillas como beber o comer. Ya no se comprenden las impresiones visuales ni las relaciones espaciales. Se produce un cambio en el estado de ánimo y la personalidad de las personas afectadas. Se molestan fácilmente cuando están fuera de su entorno familiar. Si se interrumpen rutinas o procesos rígidos desarrollados, se produce inquietud, ansiedad o confusión. La realidad se transforma en una extraña ilusión en la que ya no se cree ni se confía.
Debido a la degradación de las capacidades cognitivas, la pérdida de la personalidad y la degradación de la condición física y corporal, uno sólo puede observar con impotencia la decadencia y la consiguiente disminución de las fuerzas vitales del ser amado. Seguramente todos nos hemos enfrentado alguna vez a esta terrible enfermedad, incluidos nosotros.
Por supuesto, conocemos muy bien a Pink Floyd y a todos los miembros de la banda les gusta escuchar uno o dos discos de Floyd. Las influencias para nosotros son, por supuesto, las bandas y la música que nos gustan, pero sobre todo las historias cotidianas, las situaciones o los acontecimientos que nos conciernen son más importantes para crear nuevas canciones. No pretendía parecerse a Pink Floyd, pero si este es el caso, no es un problema para nosotros. Y nos lo tomamos con humor.
MiM: La banda lanzó "Echoes of the Second Sun" en 2019 con excelentes críticas. ¿Cuéntame cómo ha sido recibido por el público?
WP: Nuestro álbum debut "Echoes of the Second Sun" de 2019 fue bien recibido en la escena fumeta y, en general, tuvo buenas críticas en los medios y en la escena. Hicimos una gira por Alemania con algunos espectáculos, tocamos conciertos con bandas del mismo género y apoyamos a grupos como Witch, Motorowl o Godsleep. También tocamos en algunos espectáculos en festivales. La primera edición de nuestro álbum debut “Echoes of the Second Sun” está agotada, tuvimos que hacer una segunda edición. Y de alguna manera terminamos en el primer volumen del libro “The Stoner Freaks Anthology” con nuestro álbum debut.

'Spell Of The Crimson Eye' is the second album by German fuzzers Wolf Prayer. Slowly but painstakingly it makes its way to the ears and hearts of its listeners. MiM: 'Spell of the Crimson Eye' (Barhill Records, 2023) is an album with a slow, calm, but heavy and harsh sound. Is that so?
WP: We are convinced that with “Spell of the Crimson Eye” we have developed our sound but remained true to our musical style. The album is more direct and fuzzier than its predecessor. The focus was on expanding and manifesting our sound. It was also important that we transfer the heaviness we have at live shows to the recording for the second album. In this regard, we took more time with the recordings and experimented with different effects, such as analog distortion or stereo effects. Or giving the synthesizer and the organ more freedom and scope. All songs were created privately at home, worked out in the rehearsal room, and finalized in the studio. We're happy if calm, slow means stronger or more intense. When recording “Spell of the Crimson Eye”, which we recorded again in the Love Station Studios in Germany, we also experimented with different microphones and distances to the individual amplifiers, stereo recording or mono recording. Hiwatt, Orange, or Marshall Amps were used for both guitar and bass to achieve our desired sound, which we were looking for anew with every song. With this, for us, the perfect sound starting point, Christian Schmid refined the finished mix with a lot of love and patience from Vienna, in cooperation with Jan (Guitar & Vocals & Visuals). Christian Schmid also experimented a lot with the mix, digital effects or the spatiality of the recording in order to do justice to the desired sound of the individual members, the recording engineer, and Christian Schmid's own requirements. The combination of everything made the final mix. The whole thing was finalized in the renowned Emil Berliner Studios in Berlin (EBS), with whom we also worked together on the first album. Mastering and vinyl editing was outsourced and taken over by EBS.
MiM: The song "Moon" is a tribute to the NASA mission called Apollo, which lasted from 1969-1972. How did the idea come about? Tell me about this song.
WP: I think you mean "Luna” which is our first single of “Spell of the Crimson Eye”. The song is a tribute to NASA’s Apollo program (1969-1972), the associated moon landings, but above all, as the title suggests, to Earth’s mystical partner: the Moon. This song describes mankind's journey and mystical attraction to our satellite and invites us to close our eyes and surrender to our own musical journey to the Moon. Jan has been interested in space travel, especially the Apollo program, since his youth. The song's theme fits well with the timing, as various spacefaring nations are once again focusing on the moon and want to use the satellite as a stopover for further Mars missions. This is also the case, for example, with NASA's Artemis program.
MiM: In "Oblivion" I feel a marked influence from bands like Pink Floyd. Is that so? What can you tell me about this topic? What are the band's most direct influences when composing new material?
WP: The song is about forgetfulness, more precisely the disease-related forgetfulness of Alzheimer’s dementia, an incurable brain disorder. Due to the death of nerve cells in the brain, affected people become increasingly forgetful, confused, and disoriented. Familiar, simple activities such as drinking or eating can no longer be carried out. Visual impressions and spatial relationships are no longer understood. There is a change in the mood and personality of the affected persons. They easily become upset when they are outside their familiar environment. If routines or developed rigid processes are interrupted, there is restlessness, anxiety, or confusion. Reality changes into a strange illusion that is no longer believed or trusted.
Due to the degradation of cognitive abilities, the loss of personality, and the degradation of the physical, and bodily condition, one can only watch helplessly the decay and the associated dwindling of the life forces of the loved one. Surely everyone has been confronted with this terrible disease at some point, including us.
Of course, we know Pink Floyd very well and all band members like to listen to one or two Floyd records. Influences for us are of course bands and music that we like, but above all everyday stories or situations or events that concern us are more important to create new songs. It wasn't intended to resemble Pink Floyd, but if this is the case, it's not a problem for us and we take it with humor.
MiM: The band released "Echoes of the Second Sun" in 2019 to rave reviews. Tell me how it has been received by the public.
WP: Our debut album "Echoes of the Second Sun" from 2019 was well received in the stoner scene and was generally well reviewed in the media and in the scene. We toured Germany with a few shows, played concerts with bands from the same genre, and supported acts like Witch, Motorowl or Godsleep. We also played a few festival shows. The first pressing of our debut album “Echoes of the Second Sun” is out of print, we had to have a second pressing made. And we somehow ended up in the first volume of “The Stoner Freaks Anthology” book with our debut album.
MiM: Once the album is available to all fans of the band, what plans do you have to promote it?
WP: Yes, we will promote the album with a few more shows this year. Unfortunately we have no booking contact in Spain so we won't be playing there or in southern Europe. A few shows in Germany and France are on the agenda:
For 2024 we plan to continue promoting the album with club concerts or festival shows.
