Satan's Fall definitivamente no es la primera banda de Helsinki que emprende una marcha triunfal por el mundo metalero. Durante muchos años, la capital finlandesa en el extremo sur del país ha sido considerada un crisol de bandas y músicos talentosos que tienen la capacidad de sobrevivir incluso en tiempos difíciles.

Satan's Fall ha superado una fase tan difícil, cuando tras el lanzamiento de su álbum debut 'Final Day' en diciembre de 2020, la pandemia hizo innecesarios los planes de gira. Pero el quinteto formado por la vocalista Miika Kokko, el guitarrista Tomi Mäenpää y el bajista Joni Petander no ha perdido su idealismo, sino todo lo contrario: tras un cambio de formación en el que Ville Koskinen entró como nuevo guitarrista principal y Arttu Hankosaari tomó el puesto de baterista, El quinteto nórdico suena más impresionante que nunca. MiM: Satan's Fall es una banda joven que ha sabido superarlo todo para construir una sólida carrera en el complicado mundo de la música. Comenta cómo fueron los inicios y qué te llevó a crear la banda.

Tomi: Nada realmente me impulsó a formar la banda. Satan's Fall nació accidentalmente; en otras palabras, somos una banda que nunca se suponía que fuera una banda.

Satan's Fall comenzó cuando nuestro ex-guitarrista, uno de los miembros fundadores, y mi buen amigo Kride Lahti estaban ensayando con su otra banda cerca donde yo vivía, y a veces me pedía que pasara el rato en su lugar de ensayo. Una vez tomamos un par de cervezas y toqué la melodía de apertura de la canción “Steel Highway” del demo de “Seven Nights”, que a Kride le entusiasmó e hizo una armonía de guitarra. Fue entonces cuando empezamos a acumular riffs y, finalmente, les pedimos a otros miembros que se unieran. El único propósito era divertirse y beber cerveza. Nuestro primer cantante, Markus, sugirió entonces que fuéramos a su estudio para grabar las tres canciones de demostración, y eso fue lo que hicimos, y aquí estamos.

MiM: “Destination Destruction” (Steamhammer/SPV, 2023) es un álbum con un sonido sólido, fuerte y una energía increíble!! Excelente producción. Riff de guitarras gemelas, cortantes y melódicas que me transportan a la escena del heavy metal de los años 80. ¿Qué puedes contarme sobre este álbum?

Tomi: Diré desde el principio que este es sin lugar a dudas nuestro lanzamiento más sólido hasta la fecha.

El álbum está lleno de riffs rockeros y jugosos solos y solistas de guitarra. Nos esforzamos por lograr lo mismo que con el álbum debut, para que las canciones no se repitan y cada una se mantenga orgullosa de sí misma. Lo logramos una vez más, tal vez incluso mejor que con el álbum debut. Además, también obtuvimos un final épico en forma de “Dark Star”, así como “Final Day” en el álbum debut.

MiM: ¿Cómo ha sido el proceso de grabación y producción musical de este nuevo álbum? ¿Crees que es superior al álbum anterior? ¿Me contaste sobre eso?

Tomi: En realidad, el álbum surgió de manera un poco atípica porque nunca ensayamos ni arreglamos las canciones juntos. Ni siquiera nos vimos durante el proceso de composición. Ville y yo hicimos las canciones a través de Internet, es decir, grabamos riffs e intercambiamos ideas, de las cuales nacieron todas las canciones. Luego Miika arregla sus propias melodías vocales y siguen otras cosas.

Además de esta forma de trabajar, también teníamos mucha prisa porque nos quedaban unos seis meses para componer las canciones del álbum, grabarlas, mezclarlas y masterizarlas.

Considero que lo hemos conseguido bastante bien teniendo en cuenta la situación, por lo que en cierto modo tenemos que estar satisfechos con esto. En el futuro, definitivamente intentaremos volver al hecho de que podemos componer y arreglar juntos.

MiM: “Destination Destruction” es un excelente álbum de heavy metal, pero al escucharlo con atención siento una marcada influencia de power metal. ¿Es eso así? ¿Cómo lo ves? 

Tomi: Por supuesto, hay influencias del power metal. Hay influencias de todas partes. Nunca puedo considerar que nuestra música sea solo heavy metal. Lo encuentro poco imaginativo y aburrido. Del mismo modo, sé que los oyentes tienen una necesidad compulsiva de compartimentar siempre las cosas, pero apenas conozco a ningún músico que haga eso. Ese tipo de ajetreo mata rápidamente la creatividad si te pones en una caja y operas desde allí. Yo diría que somos ante todo una banda de metal, pero sin límites. Los límites son para quienes los necesitan. Otros hacen lo que saben y nosotros hacemos lo que queremos.

MiM: ¿Podríamos definir el sonido de la banda o, por el contrario, son una banda inquieta a la que le gusta innovar y abrir nuevas propuestas?

Tomi: Sí. Como acabo de decir, solo hacemos lo que queremos; somos no intentar complacer a nadie más que a nosotros mismos; otros están invitados a la fiesta. Estamos muy abiertos a todas las cosas nuevas y quiero seguir intentando combinar diferentes cosas siempre que hagamos que suenen bien.

En términos de producción, hemos combinado la vieja escuela y la modernidad, y creo que ha funcionado muy bien.

MiM: Satan's Fall es claramente una banda con un futuro por delante. El profesionalismo y el enfoque de la banda están más que latentes. ¿Dónde te ves dentro de 5 años?

Tomi: Pude ver que en cinco años habremos hecho cuatro álbumes y habremos podido hacer giras por el mundo, como pretendemos hacer actualmente. Cosas como esta toman tiempo, pero cinco años parece una estimación realista para nuestro plan.

MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum?

Tomi: Por supuesto, intentamos dar tantos conciertos como podamos. Sin embargo, es la mejor manera de promocionar la banda y el nuevo álbum. Tenemos una gira europea en proceso para marzo del próximo año. Si quieres vernos en tu ciudad natal, díselo a los promotores locales o lugares de conciertos. Realmente no podemos hacer nada al respecto porque la gente tiene que crear la demanda para que nos inviten a tocar.

Satan's Fall is definitely not the first band from Helsinki to undertake a triumphant march halfway around the metalhead world. For many years, the Finnish capital in the far south of the country has been considered a melting pot of talented bands and musicians who have the resilience to survive even in difficult times.

Satan's Fall has overcome such a difficult phase, when after the release of their debut album 'Final Day' in December 2020, the pandemic made touring plans unnecessary. But the quintet surrounding vocalist Miika Kokko, guitarist Tomi Mäenpää and bassist Joni Petander has not lost its idealism—quite the opposite: after a line-up change in which Ville Koskinen entered as the new lead guitarist and Arttu Hankosaari took over the drummer's seat, the Nordic quintet sounds more impressive than ever. They are ready to present an even stronger second album titled 'Destination Destruction', which features a total of eight powerful metal songs and two bonus tracks, performed brilliantly with speed and virtuosity.

The album will be available through the prestigious Steamhammer/SPV record label on October 27 on CD, LP, and digital download. Excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to talk to the band to learn everything about this release and the history of the band.

MiM: Satan's Fall is a young band that has known how to overcome everything to build a solid career in the very complicated world of music. Comment on what the beginnings were like and what led you to create the band.

Tomi: Nothing really drove me to create the band. Satan's Fall was born accidentally; in other words, we are a band that was never supposed to be a band.

Satan's Fall started when our former guitarist, one of the founding members, and my good friend Kride Lahti were rehearsing with his other band near where I lived, and he sometimes asked me to hang out at their rehearsal place. Once, we had a couple of beers, and I played the opening melody of the song “Steel Highway” from the “Seven Nights” demo, which Kride got excited about and made a guitar harmony for. That's when we started piling riffs together, and finally, we asked other members to join. The only purpose was to have fun and drink beer. Our first singer, Markus, then suggested that we go to his studio to record the three demo songs, and that's what we did, and here we are.

MiM: “Destination Destruction” (Steamhammer/SPV, 2023) is an album with a solid, strong sound and incredible energy!! Excellent production. Riff of cutting and melodic twin guitars that transport me to the heavy metal scene of the 80s. What can you tell me about this album? 

Tomi: I'll say right from the start that this is undeniably our strongest release to date. The album is full of rocking riffs and juicy guitar solos and leads. We strive for the same as with the debut album, so that the songs don't repeat themselves and each one stands proudly on its own. We succeeded once again, maybe even better than with the debut album. Furthermore, we also got an epic ending in the form of “Dark Star”, as well as “Final Day” on the debut album.

MiM: How has the recording and musical production process for this new album been? Do you think it is superior to the previous album? Did you tell me about it?

Tomi: The album actually came about a little atypically because we never rehearsed or arranged the songs together. We didn't even see each other during the composition process. Ville and I made the songs via the internet, i.e., we recorded riffs and exchanged ideas, based on which the whole songs were then born. Then Miika arranges his own vocal melodies, and other things follow.

In addition to this way of working, we were also in a giant hurry because we had about six months left to compose the songs for the album, record, mix, and master them.

I think we succeeded quite well considering the situation, so we have to be satisfied with this in a certain way. In the future, we will definitely try to return to the fact that we get to compose and arrange together.

MiM: “Destination Destruction” is an excellent heavy metal album, but upon listening to it carefully, I feel a marked power metal influence. Is that so? How do you see it?

Tomi: Of course, there are influences from power metal. There are influences from everywhere. I can never consider our music to be just heavy metal. I find it unimaginative and boring. Likewise, I know that listeners have a compulsive need to always compartmentalize things, but I hardly know any musicians who do that. That kind of hustle kills creativity quickly if you put yourself in a box and operate from there. I would say that we are first and foremost a metal band, but without any boundaries. Boundaries are for those who need them. Others do what they know, and we do what we want.

MiM: Could we define the band's sound or, on the contrary, are they a restless band that likes to innovate and open new proposals?

Tomi: Yes. As I just said, we only do what we want; we are not trying to please anyone but ourselves; others are invited to the party. We are very open to all new things, and I want to keep trying to combine different things as long as we make them sound good.

In terms of production, we have combined old-school and modern, and I think it has worked really well.

MiM: Satan's Fall is clearly a band with a future ahead of them. The band's professionalism and focus are more than latent. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Tomi: I could see that in five years we will have made four albums and have been able to tour the world, as we currently aim to do. Things like this take time, but five years sounds like a realistic estimate for our plan.

MiM: What plans do you have to promote this album? 

Tomi: Of course, we try to play as many gigs as we can. However, it is the best way to promote the band and the new album. We have a European tour in the works for March next year. If you want to see us in your hometown, tell local promoters or gig venues. We can't really do anything about it because people have to create the demand for us to be invited to play.

MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers.
