La banda alemana de Power Metal melódico Freedom Call lanzará su nuevo álbum “Silver Romance” el 10 de mayo bajo el prestigioso sello discográfico Steamhammer/SPV. Excelente oportunidad para que Made in Metal hable con Chris Bay para enterarse de todo lo relacionado con este álbum.

MiM: “Silver Romance” (Steamhammer/SPV, 2024) es un álbum con un sonido excepcional. Con riffs pegadizos y solos de guitarra, melodías de teclado que te hacen adentrarte en la historia que nos cuentan. ¿Qué puedes decirme sobre este álbum? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción?

FC: Gracias por los elogios sobre nuestro nuevo álbum. En 2020, tuvimos que interrumpir inesperadamente nuestra gira del álbum anterior… venía un momento duro y difícil para todos. Empecé a escribir canciones una y otra vez, una y otra vez, pero el resultado, debido a mi estado de ánimo, no pudo igualar nuestra actitud principal, el Happy Metal. Pero, de todos modos, después de tocar varios conciertos bajo las “restricciones actuales”, transmisiones en vivo, etc., en 2022 pudimos volver a nuestra forma habitual y comenzamos la producción de “Silver Romance”. Trabajamos simultáneamente en muchos estudios de grabación y finalmente a finales de 2023 pudimos terminar las grabaciones, nació un nuevo bebé. Al mismo tiempo, creamos el arte del álbum, lo que me inspiró increíblemente. Fue como sumergirme en otro mundo de fantasía, lo que me permitió evocar numerosas ideas en materia musical y lírica.

MiM: Son 25 años de carrera. ¿Cómo te sientes? ¿Pensaste cuando empezaste que llegarías a los 25 años? ¿Cómo fueron esos inicios? ¿Qué tan difícil fue para la banda ingresar al complicado mundo de la industria musical?

FC: Sí, 25 años parece mucho, mucho tiempo, pero no lo parece. El tiempo vuela, más rápido de lo esperado. Cuando empezamos, no había planes ni expectativas para el futuro. Simplemente lo hicimos. Los primeros años fueron increíblemente emocionantes y cada espectáculo fue un desafío. Lo bueno es, además, después de 25 años, sigue casi igual. Todavía estamos nerviosos antes del show o las presentaciones en el estudio, nos encanta viajar y estamos más que agradecidos y felices de tener el mejor trabajo del mundo. Por supuesto, para sobrevivir más de 25 años en el negocio de la música se necesita mucho esfuerzo, tiempo, paciencia y pasión. Empezar un trabajo solo para ganar dinero es un error en la industria de la música. ;)

MiM: Siento que canciones como “Out Of Space” y “Supernova” tienen una influencia Hard Rock muy marcada. El uso del teclado es más incisivo que en otros temas. ¿Cómo lo ves?

FC: Ja, ja, acabas de enumerar mis canciones favoritas del nuevo álbum. Soy alguien de los 80/90. Nunca me sentí limitado al escribir canciones. En mi música puedes encontrar todas las influencias que tuve desde mi infancia. Me encanta usar melodías de teclado fuertes y pegadizas cuando encajan perfectamente con el arreglo de la canción. De esta forma, podrás incluso sustituir algunas líneas vocales.

MiM: “In Quest Of Love” es una canción donde la banda presenta su verdadera esencia. Puro power metal melódico. Es sin duda uno de mis favoritos. ¿Qué me puedes decir sobre este tema?

FC: Estoy realmente de acuerdo. Especialmente, “In Quest of Love” es una canción típica de Freedom Call. También podría ser una canción del primer álbum “Stairway to Fairyland”. No creamos este tema deliberadamente, solo muestra dónde están las raíces de Freedom Call.

MiM: ¿Cuál es el concepto o historia detrás del nombre del álbum?

FC: Freedom Call está celebrando su 25 aniversario, las bodas de plata. Tengo cierta conexión con el metal plateado. Tiene varios significados. Llama la libertad, la claridad y fortalece la confianza en uno mismo, la fantasía y la imaginación. Solo por nombrar algunos de ellos. Realmente creo en cosas como esta. “Silver Romance” es nuestro mundo, muy lejano y más allá, más allá ;) eres bienvenido a visitarnos.

MiM: Al escuchar el álbum, siento una conexión entre todas las canciones. ¿“Silver Romance” es un álbum conceptual? ¿De qué tratan las canciones, líricamente hablando?

FC: Generalmente, no soy un gran admirador de los álbumes conceptuales. Parece que el valor del concepto y la letra es más fuerte que la música. El tema de “Silver Romance” es una oportunidad para escapar a otro mundo mientras escuchas música y observas las hermosas obras de arte. Ambos están entrelazados. Este es el concepto. El estado del mundo real en este momento es alarmante y con canciones como “High Above”, “In Quest of Love” y más, simplemente ofrecemos un mejor lugar para estar.

MiM: Si tuvieras que juzgar críticamente la carrera de la banda, ¿qué les dirías a nuestros lectores?

FC: Claro, en retroceso hubo situaciones, momentos o decisiones, ahora actuaría diferente. Pero de todos modos, ya está hecho, no se puede cambiar el pasado. Esa no es la cuestión. La parte más importante de todo es que vivas con autenticidad como persona. No solo el éxito en tu carrera o el dinero te hacen feliz, es la pasión la que te mantiene adelante.

MiM: ¿Podríamos definir el sonido de la banda o, por el contrario, son una banda inquieta a la que le gusta innovar y abrir nuevas propuestas?

FC: Yo diría que Freedom Call es Freedom Call;). Ya hemos mostrado muchas facetas musicales en nuestros álbumes anteriores y “Silver Romance” es, en mi opinión, el más colorido. A lo largo de los años hemos ido construyendo nuestra marca registrada “Happy Metal”. Innovación o no. A nadie le gustaría escuchar que Freedom Call hace Death Metal ;))

MiM: ¿Giras o conciertos en los próximos meses?

FC: Simultáneamente, al día del lanzamiento de “Silver Romance” en mayo, nuestra gira “Silver Romantic Metal Nights” comenzará en Alemania, donde tocará la primera parte de este viaje.

Luego apareceremos en muchos festivales de verano en toda Europa antes de reiniciar nuestra gira por Europa hasta finales de 2024.

MiM: Finalmente, quería que te sintieras libre de compartir algunas palabras con tus fans y nuestros lectores.

The German Melodic Power Metal band Freedom Call will release their new album “Silver Romance” on May 10 under the prestigious Steamhammer/SPV record label. Excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to talk to Chris Bay to find out everything related to this album.

MiM: “Silver Romance” (Steamhammer/SPV, 2024) is an album with an exceptional sound! With catchy riffs and guitar solos, keyboard melodies that make you delve into the story they tell us. What can you tell me about this album? What was the recording and production process like?

FC: Thank you for the compliments concerning our new album. In 2020, we had unexpected to interrupt our tour of the previous album…a hard and difficult time for everyone was following. I started the songwriting on and on, again and again, but the result, due to my state of mood, could not match our main attitude, the Happy Metal. But, anyway, after playing several concerts under the “present restrictions”, live streamings etc. 2022 we could return to our regular shape, and we started the production of “Silver Romance”.  We worked simultaneous in many recording studios and finally end of 2023 we could finish the recordings…a new baby was born. At the same time, we created the artwork for the album, which inspired me amazingly. It was like diving into another world of fantasy, that made me able to call up numerous ideas in musical and lyrical concerning.

MiM: It's 25 years of career. How do you feel? Did you think when you started that you would reach 25 years? What were those beginnings like? How difficult was it for the band to enter the complicated world of the music industry?

FC: Ya, 25 years sounds like a long, long time…but it doesn't feel like. Time is flying, faster than expected. When we started, there were no plannings or expectations for the future. We just did it. The first years were incredibly exciting, and every show was a challenge. The good thing is...also after 25 years, it's almost still the same. We are still nervous before the show or studio performances, we love to travel around, and we are more than thankful and happy to have the best job in the world. Of course, to survive over 25 years in the music business needs plenty of effort, time, patience, and passion. To start a job just to make money, you are mistaken in the music industry. ;)

MiM: I feel songs like “Out Of Space” and “Supernova” have a well-marked Hard Rock influence. The use of the keyboard is more incisive than in other themes. How do you see it?

FC: Ha, ha, you just listed my favorite songs from the new album. I'm someone from the 80s/90s. I never felt limited in my songwriting. In my music, you can find all the influences I got from my childhood on. I love to use strong and catchy keyboard melodies when it's fitting perfectly to the song arrangement. In this way, you can even replace some vocal lines.

MiM: “In Quest Of Love” is a song where the band presents its true essence. Pure Melodic Power Metal. It is undoubtedly one of my favorites. What can you tell me about this topic?

FC: I'm truly agreed. Specially, “In Quest of Love” is a typical Freedom Call Song. It also could be a song from the first album “Stairway to Fairyland”. We didn't create this theme deliberately, it's just showing where the roots of Freedom Call are.

MiM: What is the concept or story behind the name of the album?

FC: Freedom Call is celebrating their 25-year anniversary, the silver wedding. I have a certain connection to the metal silver. It has several meanings. Freedom Call, clarity and it strengthens the self-confidence, your fantasy, and imagination. Just to name a few of it. I'm really believing in things like this. “Silver Romance" is our world, far away and beyond, beyond ;) you're welcome to visit us.

MiM: Listening to the album, I feel a connection between all the songs. “Silver Romance” is a concept album? What are the songs about, lyrically speaking?

FC: I'm generally not a big fan of concept albums. It appears that the worth of the concept and lyrics is stronger than the music. The topic of “Silver Romance” is an opportunity to escape into another world while listening to the music and watching the beautiful artwork. Both are intertwined. This is the concept. The state of the real world at this time is alarming and with songs like “High Above”, “In Quest of Love” and more, we're just offering a better place to be.

MiM: If you were to critically judge the band's career, what would you say to our readers?

FC: Of course, in throwback there were situations, moments or decisions, now I would act differently. But anyway, it's done, you can't change the past. That's not the question. The most important part of all is, that you are living in authenticity as a person. Not only success in your career or money makes you happy...it's the passion that keeps you going on.

MiM: Could we define the sound of the band or, on the contrary, are they a restless band that likes to innovate and open new proposals?

FC: I would say, Freedom Call is Freedom Call ;). We have already shown many musical facets on our previous albums and “Silver Romance” is in my opinion, the most colorful one. Over the many years, we built up our trademark „Happy Metal”. Innovation or not. Nobody would like to hear Freedom Call makes Death Metal ;))

MiM: Tours or concerts in the coming months?

FC: Simultaneous to “Silver Romance's” release day in May, our “Silver Romantic Metal Nights” Tour is gonna start in Germany where it will play the first part of this journey. Then we will appear at many summer festivals around Europe before we will re-start our tour in Europe until the end of 2024.

MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers?

FC: We would like to thank you all for your incredible support over the many years. We always enjoyed our time in your country, and of course, we will bring the “Silver Romance” to Spain as well.
