El pasado 26 de abril, la banda de Thrash Metal Darkness, con sede en Essen, Alemania, lanzó su álbum más feroz hasta la fecha, “Blood On Canvas”, a través de Massacre Records. Made in Metal habla con su vocalista, Lee, para conocer más detalles de este nuevo trabajo.

MiM: “Blood On Canvas” (Massacre Records, 2024) es un álbum con un sonido agresivo, rápido y pesado. ¡Puro Thrash Metal! ¿Qué puedes decirme sobre este álbum? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción?

D: ¡Esta vez el proceso de producción llevó mucho tiempo! ¡Teníamos 3 canciones listas antes de los cierres y de hecho queríamos entrar al estudio en 2022! Pero ya sabes lo que pasó durante ese tiempo. Los constantes altibajos nos sacaron completamente de ritmo, por lo que no empezamos a componer en serio hasta finales de 2022 y principios de 2023. Pero luego dejamos salir toda la ira.

MiM: “Wake Up In Rage” es una canción que comienza con una intro de un despertador y de ahí comienza con unos riffs de guitarra cortantes y rápidos, letras oscuras que seguramente cautivarán a todos los fanáticos del Thrash Metal. ¿Qué me puedes decir sobre este tema? ¿De qué se trata?

D: Se trata de esa ira y desesperación que todos conocemos. Cada mañana te despiertas y tu ira es incluso mayor que el día anterior. No se trata de que se agote el nuevo teléfono inteligente, sino de la guerra, la crueldad y la injusticia en este, nuestro mundo.

MiM: En este disco hay complicidad y entendimiento entre el sonido de ambas guitarras. En muchas ocasiones suenan al unísono, realizando exquisitos pasajes melódicos. ¿Cómo lo ves?

D: ¡Hemos escuchado esto mucho ahora! Sin embargo, no pensamos en ello en absoluto al escribir la canción. ¡Pero tienes razón! ¡Es genial si escuchas las canciones desde cierta distancia!

MiM: El trabajo vocal realizado en este álbum es excelente. Esa perfecta armonía entre la voz rasposa y gutural, con la base rítmica y los riffs de guitarra y las melodías es espectacular. ¿Cuéntame sobre eso?

D: Me alegra que lo veas así. Por supuesto, trato constantemente de desarrollarme más. No sé si lo sabes, ¡pero “cantaba” en una banda de grindcore durante años! ¡No soy un cantante clásico de thrash metal! Pero la banda estaba abierta a cosas nuevas y quedó impresionada, por ejemplo, con el gruñido de “La verdad es una puta”. Ideas como estas las desarrollamos en la sala de ensayo y en el estudio. Trabajé muy de cerca con Arnd y Lacky en el estudio. Creo que nuestra creatividad compartida dio sus frutos.

MiM: El guitarrista Meik se separó de la banda en medio del proceso de grabación y producción de este álbum. ¿Es eso así? ¿Te importaría contarme sobre esto? ¿Esto retrasó la producción del álbum de alguna manera? ¿Meik dejó la banda por diferencias musicales?

D: Meik y nosotros hemos tenido opiniones diferentes durante mucho tiempo sobre nuestra forma de trabajar. ¡Así que fue insinuado! Lacky ya estaba tocando la batería en el estudio y las guitarras habrían sido las siguientes. ¡¡Aquí fue cuando sucedió!! Un momento muy desafortunado. Pero Arnd es un profesional e inmediatamente dijo: “¡Entonces lo haré yo mismo!”. No tengo idea de cuántas noches estuvo sentado allí tratando de manejarlo todo… ¡¡pero fue muy difícil!! Pero sacó toda su creatividad y entregó un resultado brillante, en mi opinión, su mejor trabajo de guitarra en un álbum de oscuridad. ¡De vez en cuando, necesitas un poco de presión!

MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo de componer música? ¿Es un proceso colectivo o son solo uno o quizás dos los que componen en la banda?

D: ¡El compositor principal es Arnd! Constantemente aporta buenas ideas, que luego plasmamos en canciones oscuras en la sala de ensayo. Ensayamos todas las semanas y somos muy clásicos a la hora de escribir canciones. No hay un plan fijo. Por ejemplo, en el nuevo álbum hay una canción que escribió Lacky, nuestro baterista, Defcon 4. Nos ha estado contando sobre ella durante años, y luego se la canta a Arnd y ¡Arnd inmediatamente tiene un riff en la guitarra! ¡Cómo hace 40 años! :-)

MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum? ¿Conciertos o giras programadas para este nuevo año?

D: ¡Ya no nos gusta hacer una gira! Los espectáculos individuales y los festivales suelen ser más eficaces para nosotros. ¡Excepto con Sodoma! Hicimos una pequeña gira juntos el año pasado. La banda encaja mejor con la oscuridad y somos amigos. ¡Es mejor no preguntar qué pasa en el autobús turístico! :-) Tocaremos en algunos festivales y espectáculos más este año... también con Sodom. ¡Pero también volamos a Estados Unidos y Polonia! Muchos espectáculos geniales, lo estamos esperando.

MiM: Finalmente, quería que te sintieras libre de compartir algunas palabras con tus fans y nuestros lectores.

D: No sé si lo sabes, pero vivo en Alemania y España. Entonces, últimas palabras en español. Gracias por vuestro apoyo a todos los fans del metal en España. Amamos a España y su gente y esperamos volver a subirnos a un escenario en España pronto ¡Stay thrash!

On April 26, the Thrash Metal band Darkness, based in Essen, Germany, will release their fiercest album to date, “Blood On Canvas”, which will be released under the prestigious record label Massacre Records. Made in Metal talks to Lee, singer of the band, to find out everything about this new work.

MiM: “Blood On Canvas” (Massacre Records, 2024) is an album with an aggressive, fast and heavy sound. Pure Thrash Metal!! What can you tell me about this album? What was the recording and production process like?

D: The production process took a very long time this time! We had 3 songs ready before the lockdowns and actually wanted to go into the studio in 2022! But you know what happened during that time. The constant ups and downs took us completely out of rhythm, and so we didn't start composing seriously again until the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023. But then we let all the anger out.

MiM: “Wake Up In Rage” is a song that begins with an intro of an alarm clock and from there it starts with some cutting and fast guitar riffs, dark lyrics that will surely captivate all Thrash Metal fans. What can you tell me about this topic? What is it about?

D: It's about that anger and despair that we all know. Every morning, you wake up, and your anger is even greater than the day before. It's not about the new smartphone being sold out, but about war, cruelty, and injustice in this, our world.

MiM: On this album, there is a complicity and understanding between the sound of both guitars. On many occasions, they sound in unison, making exquisite melodic passages. How do you see it?

D: We've heard this a lot now! However, we didn't think about it at all when writing the song. But you are right! It's pretty cool if you listen to the songs from a certain distance!

MiM: The vocal work done on this album is excellent. That perfect harmony between the scratchy, guttural voice, with the rhythmic base and the guitar riffs and the melodies is spectacular. Tell me about it?

D: I'm delighted that you see it that way. Of course, I constantly try to develop myself further. I don't know if you know, but I “sung” in a grindcore band for years! I'm not a classic thrash metal singer! But the band was open to new things and was impressed by, for example, the growl on “Truth is a whore”. We develop ideas like these in the rehearsal room and in the studio. I worked very closely with Arnd and Lacky in the studio. I think our shared creativity paid off.

MiM: Guitarist Meik separated from the band in the middle of the recording and production process of this album. Is that so? Would you mind telling me about this, did this delay the production of the album in any way? Was Meik leaving the band due to musical differences?

D: Meik and we have had different opinions about the way we work for a long time. So it was hinted at! Lacky was already drumming in the studio and the guitars would have been next. This is when it happened!! Very unfortunate timing. But Arnd is a professional and immediately said, "then I'll do it myself”! I have no idea how many nights he sat there trying to manage it all… but it was really hard!! But he brought out all his creativity and delivered a brilliant result, in my opinion. For me, his best guitar work on a darkness album! No delay! Occasionally, you need a little pressure! :-D

MiM: What is the creative process of composing music like, is it a collective process, or is it just one or maybe two who compose in the band?

D: The main composer is Arnd! He constantly provides good ideas, which we then form into darkness songs in the rehearsal room. We rehearse every week and are very classic when it comes to songwriting. There is no fixed plan. For example, on the new album there is a song that Lacky, our drummer, wrote, Defcon 4. He's been telling us about it for years, and then he sings it to Arnd and Arnd immediately has a riff for it on the guitar! Like 40 years ago! :-)

MiM: What plans do you have to promote this album? Concerts or tours scheduled for this new year?

D: We don't like playing a tour anymore! Individual shows and festivals are usually more effective for us. Except with Sodom! We had a little tour together last year. The band fits best with darkness and we are friends. It's better not to ask what's going on the tour bus! :-) We're playing a few more festivals and shows this year...also with Sodom. But we also fly to the USA and Poland! Many great shows, we’re looking forward to it.

MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers?
