La banda brasileña de Death Metal The Troops of Doom ha revelado los primeros detalles sobre su segundo álbum de estudio. “A Mass To The Grotesque” se lanzará como LP de vinilo de edición limitada y CD Digipak el 31 de mayo a través de Alma Mater Records, el sello portugués dirigido por el cantante de Moonspell, Fernando Ribeiro. El primer sencillo del álbum, un tema brutal titulado “Chapels of the Unholy”, fue lanzado el 12 de abril. Excelente oportunidad para que Made in Metal converse con Jairo “Tormentor” Guedz para saber todo sobre este nuevo álbum.

MiM: “A Mass To The Grotesque” (Alma Mater Records, 2024) es un álbum que continúa el trabajo estético de los álbumes anteriores de la banda. Death metal de la vieja escuela. Crudo, pesado y áspero. Sin medias tintas. ¿Qué puedes decirme sobre este álbum? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción?

Jairo - ¡Diablos, sí! ¡Esa es la manera! Esa fue la primera vez que estuvimos todos juntos en el estudio, así que este proceso de grabación fue esencial y nos divertimos mucho. Desde el primer EP en 2020, hemos estado grabando de forma remota porque vivimos en diferentes ciudades aquí en Brasil. Y probablemente, como saben, Brasil es un país gigante con proporciones continentales, lo que hace que todo sea costoso y logísticamente complejo para nosotros. Pero para este nuevo álbum decidimos que era hora de hacer algo más grande, así que todos viajamos a Porto Alegre, al sur de Brasil, donde grabamos todo en un estudio realmente genial llamado Audio Porto durante 10 días. Después de hacer eso, finalmente tuvimos la oportunidad de trabajar juntos en todo el material, no a través de WhatsApp, como lo habíamos hecho muchas veces. Apesta (risas), y eso hizo que todo evolucionara al siguiente nivel. Todo es más consistente y poderoso en este disco. Además, gracias a las manos del legendario Jim Morris de Morrisound Recording Studio en Florida, quien mezcló y masterizó brillantemente el álbum, sacando a la superficie ese notable sonido de la vieja escuela que amamos. El álbum está vivo; respira. Orgánico y low-fi, pero con un sonido maestro realmente contemporáneo y pulido.

MiM: La mezcla y masterización del álbum fue realizada por Jim Morris en el legendario Morrisound Recording en Tampa, Florida, conocido por producir algunos de los mejores clásicos del death metal de los años 80 y 90. Creen que esto es garantía de calidad, y ¿podría el álbum ser considerado quizás dentro de unos años un clásico del género?

Jairo - Bueno, sinceramente no hablamos de esto, pero espero que sí. Quiero decir, ¡sería increíble! En realidad, contactamos a los chicos de Morrisound porque somos grandes admiradores de esos clásicos que producían en el pasado. Teníamos muchas ganas de acercarnos a ese sonido orgánico y visceral, trayendo de vuelta en este nuevo disco esos increíbles años dorados del Death Metal. Ese era nuestro principal objetivo cuando los contactamos y estamos orgullosos de lo que pudimos hacer juntos. ¡Jim hizo un trabajo increíble! Espero que todos los maníacos del death metal de la vieja escuela puedan disfrutarlo tanto como nosotros.

MiM: El diseño de la portada del álbum fue obra del maestro Dan Seagrave, quien ha creado algunos de los diseños de portadas más icónicos del género. ¿Cuál es el concepto detrás del nombre del álbum y el diseño de la portada?

Jairo- ¡Sí! Una vez más, estábamos buscando a los mejores hombres para cooperar en este disco, y para el arte, no habría mejor artista que el maestro Dan Seagrave, quien hizo una portada fantástica. ¡Simplemente nos encanta! El concepto es una especie de oda a los feos y a los inadaptados, ¿sabes? ¡El metal hoy es demasiado amable, limpio y suave! ¡A la mierda eso! Entonces pensamos… ¡¡¡Hagamos que el metal sea malvado otra vez!!! Ese fue el punto de partida, tanto musical como artísticamente. Somos lo grotesco; somos el inframundo... La portada refleja una forma lúdica y etérea de representar ese rechazo al mundo actual. ¡Es una liturgia de la imperfección!

MiM: “A Mass To The Grotesque” reúne todas las cualidades, tanto a nivel musical como estético, para posicionarse como uno de los mejores discos de Death Metal de este año. ¿Cómo lo ves? ¿Cuál ha sido la respuesta de la prensa y el público respecto al disco?

Jairo- ¡Guau! ¡Es increíble escuchar eso! ¡Gracias hermano! Estamos muy emocionados porque fue un álbum por el que dimos sangre. Esto es parte de un panorama general cuando empezamos a esbozarlo hace algún tiempo. La producción no sigue los estándares de sonido actuales; todo lo contrario, se hizo así para rescatar algo que ya había sido olvidado. Hoy en día la producción sigue fórmulas plásticas y las bandas acaban pareciéndose todas a la misma. ¡Apesta! No queríamos eso para este nuevo álbum. Queríamos desafiar esta dictadura del mercado musical, aunque estábamos seguros de que mucha gente no entendería tan bien nuestro propósito. ¡Pero todo es parte del juego! Estamos contentos con eso y estoy seguro de que a la gente de la vieja escuela también le encantará.

MiM: La voz de Alex Kafer en este álbum es áspera y fuerte. Contiene ira y rabia. ¡¡Es excelente!! ¿Cómo lo hace? ¿De dónde viene toda esta ira?

Jairo - No podría estar más de acuerdo. Y tengo que decir que la voz de Alex ha estado en mejor forma desde nuestro primer EP. el está aprendiendo perfectamente cómo trabajar su voz y conducir cada vez más. Como fue la primera vez que pudimos estar juntos grabando en un estudio, creo que también es algo que lo hizo evolucionar mucho, haciéndolo más cómodo con una interpretación más enojada y más natural.¡Y finalmente, Jim logró mezclar la voz de Alex de una manera realmente extraordinaria!

MiM: El 28 de abril, The Troops of Doom estuvieron en Summer Breeze, Brasil. ¿Cómo le fue? Cuando la banda toca, ¿qué ofrecen al público? ¿Cómo es un concierto?

Jairo - ¡Summer Breeze Brasil fue una locura! Aquí es un festival al aire libre realmente grande, y esa fue la segunda edición. Estamos felices de ser parte de esta alineación de 2024 junto con otras grandes bandas como Mercyful Fate, Anthrax, Amorphis y Carcass, por mencionar algunas. Nuestro show está lleno de ira e intensidad, directo al grano, como debería ser un show de Metal. El público fue increíble y loco, y además de recorrer toda nuestra discografía, también tocamos canciones de Sepultura de cuando yo formaba parte de la banda, en los años 80, como “Bestial Devastation”, “Morbid Visions”, “Antichrist” y, por supuesto, “Troops of Doom”.

MiM: ¿Cuáles son tus principales influencias? ¿Cómo intentas incluir elementos personales al crear música?

Jairo: Slayer, Celtic Frost, Possessed, Kreator y obviamente Sepultura. No pensamos mucho en eso porque todo surge de forma muy natural y es básicamente inconsciente cuando componemos riffs. Está en nuestras venas, ¿sabes? Pero nos centramos en la mayor parte de esa vibra de la vieja escuela de los 80 y principios de los 90. El ser humano es nostálgico por naturaleza, y ese sentimiento era algo que queríamos explorar más a fondo con The Troops of Doom, ofreciendo una experiencia completa, casi como en una máquina del tiempo.

MiM: ¿Cuál es la relación actual de Jairo “Tormentor” Guedz con los hermanos Cavalera y Andreas Kisser?

Jairo - ¡Lo mejor posible! Por cierto, estuve con Andreas recientemente en Summer Breeze. Siempre fuimos amigos, incluso después de la ruptura de Sepultura, yo he sido amigo de ambos lados, por supuesto. Tanto Sepultura como los hermanos Cavalera, cuando tocaban aquí en Brasil, siempre me invitaban a tocar y cosas así. Desafortunadamente, aún no hemos compartido escenario con Sepultura, pero ya hemos compartido escenario con Max e Igor. ¡Fue muy divertido!

MiM ¿Qué aporta a una banda como la vuestra formar parte del catálogo de Alma Mater Records?

Jairo - Alma Mater Records es un sello fantástico, propiedad de Fernando Ribeiro de Moonspell. Fernando me dijo que siempre tuvo una conexión contundente con los primeros discos de Sepultura en los que participé, y eso despertó su interés por The Troops of Doom. Fernando también es un gran admirador de la escena brasileña, y con todo esto terminó haciéndonos una excelente propuesta. Están haciendo un trabajo excepcional y estamos felices de estar a bordo.

MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum?

Jairo- ¡Claro! El foco principal son, sin duda, los conciertos y las giras. Como saben, recientemente hicimos Summer Breeze Brasil, y a lo largo de este año también tenemos algunos otros conciertos en el territorio brasileño y posiblemente en Sudamérica, y estoy seguro de que vendrán muchas fechas más. En agosto finalmente haremos nuestra primera gira europea y estamos muy entusiasmados con eso. Espero verlos a todos en el camino. ¡Va a ser fabuloso!

Jairo- ¡Genial! Brazilian Death Metal band The Troops of Doom have revealed the first details about their second studio album. "A Mass To The Grotesque" will be released as a limited edition vinyl LP and CD Digipak on May 31 via Alma Mater Records, the Portuguese label run by Moonspell singer Fernando Ribeiro. The first single from the album, a brutal track titled “Chapels of the Unholy,” was released on April 12. Excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to talk to Jairo "Tormentor" Guedz to find out everything about this new album.

MiM: “A Mass To The Grotesque” (Alma Mater Records, 2024) is an album that continues the aesthetic work of the band's previous albums. Old-school death metal. Raw, heavy, and rough. No half measures. What can you tell me about this album? What was the recording and production process like?

Jairo - Hell yeah! That’s the way! That was the first time we got to be all together in the studio, so this recording process was essential, and we had a lot of fun. Since the first EP in 2020, we have been recording remotely since we live in different cities here in Brazil. And probably, as you know, Brazil is a giant country with continental proportions, which makes everything expensive and logistically complex for us. But for this new album, we decided that it was time to do something bigger, so we all traveled to Porto Alegre, southern Brazil, where we recorded everything in a really great studio called Audio Porto for 10 days. After doing that, we finally had the chance to work on the whole material together, not via WhatsApp, as we had many times. It sucks (lol), and that made everything evolve to a serious next level. Everything is more consistent and powerful on this record. Furthermore, thanks to the hands of the legendary Jim Morris from Morrisound Recording Studio in Florida, who brilliantly mixed and mastered the album, bringing to the surface that remarkable old-school sound we love. The album is alive; it breathes. Organic and low-fi, but with a really contemporary and polished master sound.

MiM: The mixing and mastering of the album was done by Jim Morris at the legendary Morrisound Recording in Tampa, Florida, known for producing some of the best death metal classics of the 80s and 90s. They believe this is a guarantee of quality, and could the album perhaps be considered a classic of the genre in a few years?

Jairo - Well, honestly we didn’t talk about this, but I really hope so. I mean, it would be incredible!!! Actually, we reached Morrisound guys because we’re big fans of those classics they produced back in the days. We really wanted to approach that organic and visceral sound, bringing back to this new record that amazing golden years of Death Metal. That was our main goal when we contacted them and we’re proud of what we were able to do together. Jim did a killer job! I hope all old-school death metal maniacs can enjoy it as much as we do.

MiM: The album cover design was by master Dan Seagrave, who has created some of the most iconic cover designs in the genre. What is the concept behind the album name and cover design?

Jairo - Yeah! Again, we were looking for the best men to cooperate on this record, and for the artwork, there wouldn’t be a better artist than the master Dan Seagrave, who did a fantastic cover art. We simply love it! The concept is a kind ode to the ugly and misfits, you know. Metal today is too kind, clean, and soft! Fuck that! Then we thought…Let’s fucking make metal evil again!!! That was the starting point, both musically and artistically. We’re the grotesque; we’re the underworld... The cover art reflects a ludic and ethereal way to represent that rejection to the world today. It's a liturgy of imperfection!

MiM: "A Mass To The Grotesque" brings together all the qualities, both musically and aesthetically, to position itself as one of the best Death Metal albums this year. How do you see it? What has been the response from the press and the public regarding the album?

Jairo - Wow! Awesome to hear that! Thanks, brother! We’re very excited because it was an album that we gave blood to do. This is part of a big picture when we started to sketch it some time ago. The production doesn’t follow current sound standards; quite the contrary, it was done this way to rescue something that had already been forgotten. Nowadays, production follows plastic formulas, and bands all end up looking like the same thing. It sucks! We didn't want that for this new album. We wanted to challenge this dictatorship of the music market, even though we were sure that many people wouldn’t understand our purpose so well. But it's all part of the game! We’re pleased with that, and I’m sure old-school people will love it too.

MiM: Alex Kafer's voice on this album is rough and strong. It contains anger and rage. It's excellent!! As it does? Where does all this anger come from?

Jairo - I couldn’t agree more. And I have to say that Alex's voice has been in better shape since our first EP. He’s learning perfectly how to work his voice and drive more and more. Since this was the first time we were able to be together recording in a studio, I believe it’s also something that made him evolve a lot, making him more comfortable with an angrier and more natural interpretation. And finally, Jim got to mix Alex's voice in a really remarkable way!

MiM: On April 28, The Troops of Doom were at Summer Breeze, Brazil. How did it go? When the band is playing, what do they offer to the public? What is a concert like?

Jairo - Summer Breeze Brasil was insane! It’s a really big open-air festival here, and that was the second edition. We’re happy for being part of this 2024 line-up along side with great other bands like Mercyful Fate, Anthrax, Amorphis, and Carcass, to mention a few. Our show is full of anger and intense, straight to the point, like a Metal show should be. The audience was amazing and crazy, and in addition to browsing through our entire discography, we also play Sepultura songs from when I was part of the band, in the 80s, such as "Bestial Devastation", "Morbid Visions", "Antichrist," and of course, "Troops of Doom."

MiM: What are your main influences? How do you try to include personal elements when creating music?

Jairo - Slayer, Celtic Frost, Possessed, Kreator and obviously Sepultura. We don’t think much about that because everything comes very naturally and is basically unconscious when we’re composing riffs. It's in our veins, you know. But we target most of that 80s and early 90s old-school vibe. The human being is naturally nostalgic, and that feeling was something we wanted to explore further with The Troops of Doom, offering a full experience, almost like in a time machine.

MiM: What is the current relationship of Jairo “Tormentor” Guedz with the Cavalera brothers and Andreas Kisser?

Jairo - The best possible! I’ve been with Andreas recently at Summer Breeze, bytheway. We were always friends, even after Sepultura rupture, I’ve been a friend of both sides, of course. Both Sepultura and the Cavalera brothers, when they were playing here in Brazil, always invited me to jam and things like that. We haven't shared a stage with Sepultura yet, unfortunately, but we have already shared a stage with Max and Iggor. It was very fun!

MiM: What does being part of the Alma Mater Records catalog bring to a band like yours?

Jairo - Alma Mater Records is a fantastic label, owned by Fernando Ribeiro from Moonspell. Fernando told me that he always had a forceful connection with the first Sepultura albums that I participated in, and this sparked his interest in The Troops of Doom. Fernando is also a big fan of the Brazilian scene, and with all this, he ended up making us an excellent proposal. They’re doing an exceptional job, and we’re happy to be aboard.

MiM: What plans do you have to promote this album?

Jairo - Sure! The main focus is definitely concerts and tours. As you know, we recently did Summer Breeze Brasil, and along this year we also have some other concerts in the Brazilian territory and possibly South America, and I’m sure many more dates will come. In August we’ll finally do our very first European Tour and we’re so excited about that. Looking forward to see you all on the road. It’s gonna be amazing!
