Como siempre, me encargué personalmente de todas las grabaciones vocales y corales y de los instrumentos solistas. Alex Staropoli: Narramos cuentos de fantasía que tienen algunos significados, y depende del oyente considerarlos o no. El personaje principal tiene que enfrentarse repetidamente a dualidades y tomar decisiones épicas para continuar su camino hacia la autorrealización y la gloria. En primer lugar, nos gusta ofrecer a los oyentes la oportunidad de disfrutar y sumergirse en nuestro ámbito musical de todos modos.

MiM: “Vanquished by Shadows” es la canción más larga del álbum, con poco más de 16 minutos. Consta de tres partes, que destacan por los cambios de ritmos y melodías. Alex Staropoli: En cada álbum, solo Giacomo es responsable de todas las voces, incluidos los gritos, por supuesto. No estaba planeado una canción larga, pero a veces pasa algo durante el proceso de composición que me hace decidir extender una canción, como en este caso. El objetivo final es hacer una canción que no te haga creer que en realidad es tan larga y que resulte atractiva en todo momento.

MiM: Los arreglos orquestales son espectaculares y hacen que el disco suene con un cuerpo melódico impresionante. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de composición, grabación y producción?

Alex Staropoli: Normalmente, cuando la versión básica de la canción está terminada, inmediatamente sigo creando todos los arreglos, melodías vocales, armonías vocales, coros, etc. Así termino teniendo una versión muy completa de cada canción en una etapa temprana. . Todo el proceso de grabación se produce de forma natural y, paso a paso, todo es muy sencillo. Incluso cuando no asisto a grabaciones de batería, bajo o guitarra, tengo absoluta confianza en todos. En cualquier caso, hay innumerables intercambios de archivos de un lado a otro hasta que todos están contentos y todo funciona.

MiM: ¿Quién fue el responsable de los coros que acompañan a casi todas las canciones del disco?

Alex Staropoli: En términos de producirlos y grabarlos, lo soy. Con Giacomo seleccionamos muy buenos cantantes, normalmente siempre son los mismos coristas, más o menos, así que ya nos conocemos y nos llevamos bien. Es un trabajo muy duro para ellos cantar todo el día: muchas pistas para todas las numerosas armonías y partes de octava. Tiene cientos de pistas para cada canción.

MiM: ¿Será “Challenge the Wind” el final de la saga o continuará en futuros lanzamientos de la banda?

Alex Staropoli: Habrá 1 o 2 álbumes más para la saga de alquiler. Inicialmente, pensamos que sería una trilogía, pero siento que podemos explorar y desarrollar más aspectos diferentes.

Symphonic Power Metal legends Rhapsody Of Fire return with "Challenge The Wind", the third part of their Nephilim saga, which will be released on May 31 via the prestigious record label AFM Records.

For over thirty years, fans of the band have been able to rely on one thing: There is nothing half-hearted about this band. Rhapsody Of Fire mastermind and founder Alex Staropoli looks back on an impressive recording career of 14 studio albums, three EPs, and two live recordings to date. All marked with a lot of heart and soul, passion, and a wealth of ideas practically inexhaustible.

Since 1993, the Italian keyboardist has been hailed as the creator of the metal genre soundtrack and his band as one of the most charismatic acts worldwide. Excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to talk to Alex.

MiM: “Challenge the Wind” (AFM Records, 2024) is undoubtedly a musical statement from the band. Epic Power Metal, full of great melodies, fast guitars, and an impressive orchestral background. Spectacular guitar solos!! This album is a masterpiece!! What can you tell me is this album? What was it like to return to the studio after three years?

Alex Staropoli: In reality, after finishing the previous studio album “Glory for Salvation,” I immediately started working on new songs, knowing that the composition process would be spread over a few years due to various aspects, including an increased live activity. Also, for this new album, the first steps were made by myself and Roby De Micheli, working on guitar riffs and guitar parts. Thank you for your feedback, and yes, I believe as well that this new album features countless exciting elements; moreover, the perfect sounding mix brings our music to a whole new level.

MiM: What was the recording and production process like? What was it like working with Seeb Levermann (Orden Ogan)?

Alex Staropoli: The work with Seeb started recording the drums in Germany. Everything else was done in Italy by us. As always, I took personal care of all the vocal and choir recordings and solo instruments. The recording process at this time of our career is always smooth, with everything well-planned and under control. Seeb’s mix is also accurate, full of power and energy, and yet very clear and defined. We surely raised the bar with more time.

MiM: “Challenge the Wind” is the third part of the saga “The Nephilim's Empire Saga”, preceded by “The Eight Mountain” (2019) and “Glory for Salvation” (2021). In this third part, what would be the story that would be counting, or what would be the concept?

Alex Staropoli: We narrate fantasy tales that have some meanings, and it’s up to the listener if to consider them or not. The main character has to repeatedly face dualities and make epic decisions to continue his path to self-realization and glory. Firstly, we like to offer the listeners the chance to enjoy and dive in our musical realm anyway.

MiM: “Vanquished by Shadows” is the longest track on the album, at just over 16 minutes. It has three parts, which are notable for the changes in rhythms and melodies. The beginning of the song begins with a cracked, guttural voice. Is the guttural voice with which the song begins Giacomo Voli or a guest? What can you tell me about this topic? How did the idea come about?

Alex Staropoli: In every album, only Giacomo is responsible for all the vocals, including the screams, of course. A long song was not planned, but sometimes something happens during the composition process that makes me decide to extend a song, as in this case. The final goal is to make a song that doesn’t make you believe it’s actually that long and is engaging at all times.

MiM: The orchestral arrangements are spectacular and make the album sound with an impressive melodic body. What was the composition, recording, and production process like?

Alex Staropoli: Normally, when the basic version of the song is done, I immediately go on creating all the arrangements, vocal melodies, vocal harmonies, choirs, etc. So I end up having a very complete version of each song at an early stage. The entire recording process happens naturally, and step by step, it’s all very smooth. Even when I do not attend drum, bass, or guitar recordings, I have absolute trust in everyone. In any case, there are countless file exchanges back and forth until everyone is happy and everything works.

MiM: Who was responsible for the choirs that accompany almost all the songs on the album?

Alex Staropoli: In terms of producing and recording them, I am. With Giacomo we select some very good singers, normally it’s about the same chorists every time, more or less, so we know each other already and get along well. It's very hard work for them to sing all day—many tracks for all the numerous harmonies and octave parts. It has hundreds of tracks for each song.

MiM: Would “Challenge the Wind” be the end of the saga, or will it still continue in future releases by the band?

Alex Staropoli: There will be 1 or 2 more albums for the current saga. Initially, we thought it would be a trilogy, but I feel we can explore and develop more different aspects.

MiM: The lyrics of Rhapsody of Fire have always been fantastical and epic stories told in impressive ways. How, after more than 30 years of careers, are you still composing such great stories? Where does so much inspiration come from?

Alex Staropoli: This is what we do, so it comes naturally. We always loved epic movies, classical music, film music, and, moreover, natural landscapes such as forests and mountains. If you combine all these elements together, you can realize that the inspirations derived from them are infinite.

MiM: How do you think the band's goals and vision have changed in the more than three decades since the band's inception?

Alex Staropoli: The goals never changed. We love the music we do, and of course, we do it for ourselves to start with and, secondly, to make our fans happy and make them part of the big Rhapsody of Fire family.

MiM: It's more than three decades of career. How do you feel? Did you believe when you started that you would get this far? What were those beginnings like? How difficult was it for the band to enter the complicated world of the music industry?

Alex Staropoli: When we started, we never thought too much about anything but the music and wanted to become a band that could be competitive in the metal world. The main goal was to create music that we would have personally loved to find in a record store, buy, and enjoy. The beginnings were exciting; we were always focused and very proud of what we were doing, young but already with an adult mindset. We were ready to leave our hometown and country to go abroad—to Germany in this case—to record our albums, not being afraid of stepping out of the comfort zone of our homes. At that time, it was easy for us; we just sent a few demos around, and we got our first record deal in a matter of days. Today, I don’t know how easy this process would be. I think it all depends on the music and the cohesion of the musicians within the band.

MiM: They are a band that has been formed for several years, with albums and many concerts in their career. Looking back, how would you rate the band's work all these years?

Alex Staropoli: The band’s work was always hard, portrayed with passion and motivation.

MiM: What plans do you have to promote this anniversary album? Are concerts or tours scheduled for this new year?

Alex Staropoli: We are planning more live shows, of course, and have a few great surprises coming very soon.
