“Cuidado de no perderte demasiado en los recuerdos porque la vida sigue y sigue”
La banda alemana de heavy metal, Voice, lanzó su nuevo álbum “Holy Or Damned” el 12 de julio bajo el sello Massacre Records. Después de su exitoso regreso en 2017 con el álbum “The Storm”, ahora vuelven a sus raíces y presentan un nuevo álbum multifacético en el que cada canción fluye sin problemas hacia la siguiente, mientras que el arco de suspenso se mantiene continuamente. Esta es una excelente oportunidad para que Made in Metal hable con el guitarrista y tecladista Thommy Neuhierl para conocer todo lo relacionado con este nuevo álbum.
MiM: “Holy Or Damned” (Massacre Records, 2024) es un álbum con un sonido potente, con riffs de guitarra pegadizos, muy bien elaborados para llegar al corazón de todos los fanáticos del Heavy Metal. ¿Qué me puedes contar sobre este álbum? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción?
TN: ¡Muchas gracias! Las composiciones y el proceso de grabación lamentablemente tomaron mucho tiempo nuevamente. Todos tenemos un trabajo fijo y solo podemos trabajar en las canciones en nuestro tiempo libre. Primero pre produje todas las canciones y luego trabajé un poco más en ellas con los chicos, dándoles los toques finales. En las preproducciones, doy una dirección aproximada para que puedas reconocer el alma de la canción. Luego, Sören y Leo trabajan los detalles de la línea de bajo y la batería y aportan sus ideas. Las voces son similares; yo encajo la línea de la canción en la canción y luego trabajo los detalles con Oli. Hacemos las grabaciones nosotros mismos. A lo largo de los años, hemos creado varias salas para este propósito. Sin embargo, al final todavía necesitamos a alguien capaz de unir todo en la mezcla final. TN: Muchas gracias. Sí, “Tears in the Dust” es una canción excepcional que se desarrolla cada vez más y quizás da un giro inesperado aquí y allá. Se trata de envejecer y los miedos y la tristeza que puede traer consigo. Tienes que tener cuidado de no perderte demasiado en los recuerdos porque la vida sigue y sigue, y no debes perder eso. La canción está dramatúrgicamente estructurada en consecuencia y termina con el último suspiro. Recomiendo escucharla con un vino tinto con cuerpo o un whisky añejo.
MiM: Al escuchar el álbum, siento una conexión entre todas las canciones. ¿Es “Holy Or Damned” un álbum conceptual?
TN: ¡Felicitaciones! Insuperable escucha. De hecho, las canciones parecen estar relacionadas entre sí sin ser similares, más como los capítulos de un libro. No hay una canción que dé título al álbum, “Holy or damned”, pero las letras se pueden resumir en esta afirmación. Las letras cuentan historias sobre personas de diferentes edades y situaciones de la vida que caminan por la cuerda floja. Dependiendo de cómo terminen las historias o de cómo se juzguen las acciones de los personajes, uno pondrá al sujeto o al protagonista en el cajón de “Holy” o el otro en el cajón de “Damned”. Ya sea un álbum conceptual o no, seguramente será juzgado de manera igualmente diferente.
MiM: En este álbum, tienen varios invitados especiales. ¿Cómo surgió la idea? ¿Qué me puedes contar al respecto?
TN: Con Ragnar Zolberg no fue gran cosa. Nos conocemos desde hace muchos años y sé que es un músico excelente. Le pregunté y se sumó de inmediato. Le dio a “Dream on” una linda guinda del pastel con su solo y estamos orgullosos de que haya contribuido a este álbum. Al principio había considerado un violonchelo o un bajo sin trastes para “Tears in the Dust”. Sören conoce a Jäcki Reznicek de Silly desde hace muchos años. Silly es una banda muy conocida en los países de habla alemana, y fue un honor para nosotros que estuviera involucrado en esta canción. Realmente se metió en la canción y la enriqueció mucho. “Petrified Dreams” es una canción con lo que yo llamaría un tempo majestuoso. Crea espacios musicales que necesitan ser llenados hábilmente. TN: Es difícil juzgar por ti mismo porque no te gusta ponerte un espejo frente a ti mismo, y siempre hay muchos factores que pueden influir en el curso de una carrera en una dirección u otra. Quizás rechazaste una oferta que deberías haber aceptado, o no te levantaste a tiempo, o conociste a la gente equivocada. Musicalmente, exprimimos todo lo que pudimos en el tiempo que teníamos disponible. El negocio de la música a veces ha adoptado características que realmente no quiero seguir. Como músico, estás bastante atrás en la cola cuando se trata de cobrar por el trabajo que has hecho, o al menos de poder cubrir los costos.
MiM: Una vez que el álbum esté disponible para todos los fans de la banda, ¿qué planes tenéis para promocionarlo?
TN: Como ya hemos mencionado en la pregunta anterior, lamentablemente no estamos en condiciones de financiar una gira además de los discos. También estamos bastante ocupados con nuestros trabajos y no podemos pasar semanas viajando. Nos encantaría hacer eso por nuestros fans. Además, hemos tocado algunos conciertos en verano, donde también tocamos algunas canciones nuevas. Habrá algo a finales de año también, y luego encontraremos un lugar en uno o dos festivales el año que viene. The German heavy metal band, Voice, released their new album “Holy Or Damned” on July 12 under the Massacre Records label. After their successful comeback in 2017 with the album “The Storm”, they now return to their roots and present a new multifaceted album in which each song flows seamlessly into the next, while the suspenseful arc is continuously maintained. This is an excellent opportunity for Made in Metal to talk to guitarist and keyboard player Thommy Neuhierl to find out everything related to this new album.
MiM: “Holy Or Damned” (Massacre Records, 2024) is an album with a powerful sound, with catchy guitar riffs very well crafted to hit the heart of all Heavy Metal fans. What can you tell me about this album? What was the recording and production process like?
TN: Thank you very much! The compositions and the recording process unfortunately took a long time again. We all have permanent jobs and can only work on the songs in our leisure time. I first pre-produced all the songs and then worked on them a bit more with the guys, putting the finishing touches to the songs. In the pre-productions, I give a rough direction so that you can recognize the soul of the song. Sören and Leo then work out the details of the bass line and drums and contribute their ideas. Vocals are similar; I fit the song line into the song and then work out the details with Oli. We do the recordings ourselves. Over the years, we have created several rooms for this purpose. In the end, however, we still need a capable man to marry it all together in the final mix. With Mirko Hoffman, we have a very professional fellow at the start who can give one or two songs an entirely new look. This results in very interesting things. As you can hear on the new album.
MiM: “Tears in the Dust” is a beautiful ballad. Power, drive, and strength make this song reach the soul, and you can also see the excellent condition in which Oliver Glas is. What can you tell me about this song?
TN: Thank you very much. Yes, “Tears in the Dust” is an exceptional song that develops more and more and perhaps takes an unexpected turn here and there. It's about getting older and the fears and sorrow that can come with it. You have to be careful not to lose yourself too much in the memories because life goes on and on, and you shouldn't miss that. The song is dramaturgically structured accordingly and ends with the last breath. I recommend listening to it with a full-bodied red wine or a mature whiskey.
MiM: Listening to the album, I feel a connection between all the songs. Is “Holy Or Damned” a concept album?
TN: Congratulations! Excellent listening. In fact, the songs seem to be related to each other without being similar, more like the chapters of a book. There is no title song, “Holy or damned,” but the lyrics can all be broken down to this statement. The lyrics tell stories about people from different ages and life situations who are all walking a tightrope. Depending on how the stories end or how the actions of the characters are judged, one will put the subject or the protagonist in the “Holy” drawer or the other in the “Damned” drawer. Whether it is a concept album or not, it will certainly be judged just as differently.
MiM: On this album, they have several special guests. How did the idea come about? What can you tell me about it?
TN: With Ragnar Zolberg it wasn't a big thing. We've known each other for many years, and I know he's an excellent musician. I asked him, and he was immediately on board. He gave “Dream on” a nice icing on the cake with his solo, and we're proud that he contributed to this album. I had initially considered a cello or a fretless bass for “Tears in the Dust”. Sören has known Jäcki Reznicek from Silly for many years. Silly is a very well-known band in German-speaking countries, and it was an honor for us that he was involved in this song. He really got into the song and enriched it a lot. “Petrified Dreams” is a song with what I would call a majestic tempo. It creates musical spaces that need to be skillfully filled. Some of us have made music with Fredy Adler in the past, and we are grateful that he supported us with his magnificent piano part on this song.
MiM: If you were to critically judge the band's career, what would you say to our readers?
TN: It's difficult to judge for yourself because you don't like to hold up a mirror to yourself, and there are always plenty of factors that can influence the course of a career in one direction or another. Maybe you turned down an offer that you should have accepted, or you didn't get off your ass in time, or you met the wrong people. Musically, we squeezed what we could out of ourselves in the time we had available. The music business has sometimes taken on traits that I don't really want to follow. As a musician, you're pretty far back in the queue when it comes to getting paid for the work you've done, or at least being able to cover the costs. You put up with it because you enjoy it with heart and soul and because the feedback from the fans always spurs you on to keep going.
MiM: Once the album is available to all the band's fans, what plans do you have to promote it?
TN: As already mentioned in the previous question, we are unfortunately not in a position to finance a tour in addition to the records. We are also pretty busy with our jobs that we can't spend weeks traveling around. We would love to do that for our fans. Furthermore, we played a few shows in the summer, where we also played some new songs. There will be something at the end of the year as well, and then we'll find a place at one or two festivals next year. There are also a few ideas for some special shows in the pipeline, but that's not ready yet. We'll announce them on our website and Facebook in time.
