KOEN HERFST AT AO ZIGGODOME ENDSHOT PHOTO BY MARC VAN DER AA 300

MiM – Volvamos a tu nuevo disco, Back to Balance.

¿Me equivoco?

MiM – Mis mejores deseos amigo, tu música me hace feliz. Gracias por la entrevista. Esperamos verte pronto por España.
KH - Gracias Tony, ¡Espero ir a tocar en España pronto!

Drummer of Epica, After Forever, ReVamp, Dew Scented y mas..who recently has release his first solo album

KOEN HERFST AT AO ZIGGODOME ENDSHOT PHOTO BY MARC VAN DER AA 300

One of the biggest compliments so far is the one I got from Mike Mangini (Dream Theater). The moment I gave him my album he said: “Congratulations on achieving this, I know so many musicians, like myself, who have plans to do it, but never actually DO it”.

MiM - Hello Koen, ¿How are you? Some people say you are the best drummer in Netherlands. Do you think so? So, Why do you consider are the causes of this point of view?
KH - Hi Tony! I’m doing fine, thank you. There is no such thing as ‘the best drummer’, but of course It is a big honor if readers from the biggest drummagazine in The Benelux vote for you! They must have noticed I’ve been working very hard for years and years.

MiM - You have an impressive CV: Epica, After Forever, ReVamp, Dew Scented and more, but we wouldn´t think you’ll collaborate with the DJ Armin Van Buuren. Please, tell me details about this collaboration?
KH - He asked my band Bagga Bownz, where his brother and my friend Eller also plays in, to create a track together in our style (crossover, go check it on Spotify). It’s the title track of his previous album ‘Mirage’. Then we were asked to play the piece live at the previous tour, I showed what I could do and that’s how my role got bigger in the last world tour. It was an AMAZING experience! Not many drummers can say they did drum solo’s in massive arena’s like Madison Square Garden…unreal! If you google ‘Koen Herfst – Armin van Buuren’ you’ll find lots of cool fan footage to get an impression.

koena 870071286383590 4740391299612688465 n

MiM - We are a metal webzine, so we would like to know which of the previous metal band made you feel better playing with them and why?
KH - Well, After Forever was the first ‘big’ band I played with, so that was quite an experience; we didn’t have a rehearsal or whatever, so I had to study a 2 hour set and only had the soundcheck with 2 songs to prove that I could do it. A bit crazy when I look back now, but I did it flawlessly! My first experience with real touring was with EPICA and I learned a lot from that, playing wise, performing wise, people wise, etc etc.

MiM - Let’s go to Back to Balance. Man, I’m in love of the music included on the CD. Not only because of the musicians involved in the recording sessions but the written songs. Can we speak about the CD a little? Are you the main composer or somebody helps you in the writing process?
KH - Thanks for the kind words! Yes, I’m the main composer but I also have help from the other artists. For instance, the tracks with Mats Leven were co-written with him (melodies and lyrics) based on basic ideas/jams. But also, some tracks I wrote completely alone (and also played all instruments, like “Never Been So Wrong”). Learned a lot from that process alone, since it’s my first album!

MiM - In our review we compare “The Kramer”, with “Yyz” from Rush. You have a lot of musical influences. It’s Rush one of them?
KH - In the end they are for sure. I must say I only found out about them as a teenager because of the “Working Man” tribute album with members of my favorite band back then; Dream Theater. Also, there’s shattered glass in the track “Now is the Time”, which is a direct hint to Rush as a little tribute ;-)

koena 775608572496529 420948287871651948 o

MiM - The music jump easily from jazz to rap and I’m remembering “Total Hate”. How did you write this song?
KH - Actually the instrumental of this song was written by Remko van der Spek (ex-Orphanage). I’m a big fan of heavy guitars combined with heavy grooving and shuffles, so I really liked this one. Then I started to think that a little choir would be cool with Claudia Soumeru (Bagga Bownz) and I asked my friend Pat Smith (aka Tai Stamph) to do vocals/raps. The intention of the lyrics is about these scary times that it’s almost like ‘I don’t care anymore, bring it on, it’s “Total Hate” already.’

MiM - After listening “Total Hate”, we listened to the title song, and even “Begone”, and we were thinking: How deep are the black music rhythms into your DNA? Have you a black grandgrandgrandparent or something? Man, you like funky music!
KH - Haha, well I really like funky music yes. Like I like all kinds of styles. But that’s almost essential for music to me; music HAS to groove, drums were designed to make you dance in the end, or at least bang your head ;-)

MiM - However, we didn´t discover a strong influence of Latin rhythms on the CD, and taking account Latin jazz has deliver most of the important drummers worldwide, maybe you study them or have influences. Tell us, please?
KH - Sometimes I study these rhythms and of course I’m influenced but there was no intention to put those on this album. But if you listen closely to “Ghetto Cornetto” there are some subtle Latin patterns actually.

MiM - In “1916” you come back to jazz rhythms. Who is the astonishing bass player in the song? How did you choose him?
KH - I’m not sure I would call them Jazz Rhythms. More ‘over the top progrock freakshow’ rhythms, haha! The bass player is the amazing Robin Zielhorst (ex- Cynic), he did a cool job huh?

MiM - “Ghetto Cornetto”, is like a mix of jazz, heavy and prog music. How did you conceive it?
KH - Actually the idea was programmed on my computer more than ten years ago! I was studying and for a while ate a lot of cheap cornetto’s as a student, hence the name of the track! Later, when creating the album, I took this basic idea and worked out the other half with the amazingly talented Leif de Leeuw!

MiM - In the last part of the CD, it concentrates some of the heaviest songs: “Siamese Support”, “Never Been So Wrong”, and “Attitude of an Astronaut”. Did you do it on purpose?
KH - Well, “Here I am”, is also pretty heavy if you ask me, especially the last riff, which was almost scary to put that track as the opener. Attutude of an Astronaut” is the last track with a fade-out for a reason, but you’ll find out next year why that is ;-)

koena 809460865777966 968136399757764762 o

MiM - Sometimes is ugly to speak about money but I would like to know. How much money does it cost you this project? You get part of the most important musicians in Europe included in the CD. Do you think to earn money enough with the sales of the CD to recover at least the investment?
KH - Well in these times I will certainly not earn back the investment I did in terms of money, but that was never the idea behind it. I just had to do it for myself, and I learned a lot from the whole process, the writing, working together with all these great musicians. I am really proud of the end result and that I managed to do it. One of the biggest compliments so far is the one I got from Mike Mangini (Dream Theater). The moment I gave him my album he said: “Congratulations on achieving this, I know so many musicians, like myself, who have plans to do it, but never actually DO it”. And that is really the case, it means a lot of hard work and determination. And also, I could not have done it without all the great guests’ musicians and the help of hero Michiel Eilbracht, who co-produced and mixed and edited the album with me.

MiM - Our review catalogue the CD as the most ambitious CD of the year. You agree?
KH - Well that is a big honor! But I must say I don’t know of many albums with so many tracks, in different styles and with so many guest musicians, so I will agree ;-)

koena 818625538194832 2861994781565954199 n

MiM - You were mainly recognized as a metal drummer but, after listening to this CD, we consider that drummers like Scott Travis or Mike Terrana don´t makes you feel crazy.  Maybe you are more into, Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez, Dave Weckl or even John Bonham, Ginger Baker or Steve Smith. Am I wrong?
KH - I never wanted to be known as ‘just’ a metal drummer. I play all kinds of styles, but of course I like to play loud and loud music. When I was a kid I always had in mind that I wanted to be a combination of Dave Weckl, Terry Bozzio, Mike Portnoy and Adrian Young (No Doubt). And now I listen to so many drummers who all influence me…like every drummer should I think!

MiM - You have a new CD now. What’s going to happen from now on? Do you think to tour around the world promoting your own music? If so, how are you going to proceed?
KH - I will go on a well deserved holiday and think what the next plans will be! I don’t have the ambition to go live with the album, but doing clinics around the world would be an option! Stay updated through www.koenherfst.com or www.facebook.com/koenherfst to find out!

MiM - Best wishes man, your music makes me happy. Thank you for the interview. Hope to see you in Spain soon.
KH - Thanks Tony, I hope to play Spain soon again!
