El padre Davide Bruno se tomó un tiempo para responder nuestra entrevista.

MiM – Hola amigos, descubrimos Metatrone con el CD Eucharismetal. ¿Por qué el titulo de Eucharismetal?

D - Hola Tony! Bueno, Eucharismetal es nuestra manera de agradecerle a nuestro señor el regalo de la música. El nos la dio, porque amamos el metal desde el comienzo, y este título resume perfectamente lo que somos, metaleros, músicos metaleros en Cristo. Él permanece en el centro de nuestra identidad y nos da la energía para hacer que nuestra música viva y vibre, como fácilmente puedes ver en la caratula del CD, creada por el talentoso diseñador Nello Dell'Omo (ArtforMusic).

MiM – Leímos que el Padre Davide Bruno de la Archidiocesis de Catania, Italia, fue el creador de la banda. ¿por qué decidió crear una banda de metal?

D -  Bueno, yo fui uno de los miembros fundadores de la banda cuando se llamaba Metafora, en 1996. Entonces decidí entrar en el seminario de Catania para llegar a ser sacerdote en el 2001, cambiamos el nombre de la banda a Metatrone, y seguimos tocando power progresivo con una inspiración completamente nueva, por supuesto. Comencé a tocar música en los teclados cuando era muy joven, pero fue cuando descubrir el metal que decidí tener una banda de metal tocando composiciones originales.  Así que comencé a componer mis primeras canciones, encontré a algunos amigos con quien tocar y así fue creciendo todo. Con los años la banda creció, definiendo su estilo y las composiciones.

MiM – Estamos seguros que básicamente el heavy metal no está en contradicción con la fe cristiana, pero ¿ha recibido usted alguna mala opinión por parte de vuestra congregación en Catania, algún obispo o alguien bajo o sobre su jerarquía por tocar en una banda de metal?  ¿Qué sucedería si ocurriera un caso así?

D -  La historia de Metatrone está marcada por eventos extraordinarios y poco convencionales que pueden dar la mejor respuesta posible a esta pregunta. Algunos meses después de entrar al Seminario, en Catania, el sacerdote que estaba al mando supo que yo tocaba en una banda de metal y que era casi famoso en el pueblo por algunos conciertos y nuestras primeras grabaciones. Me pidió que le dejara saber qué tipo de música estaba tocando. Yo le hablé del metal y del hecho de que había comenzado a tocar metal tomando la inspiración del Gospel y las palabras de Jesús. El quedó tan encantado por estas palabras que me alentó a seguir tocando y escribiendo música y hasta decidió producir nuestro primer álbum italiano, La Mano Potente, y la versión inglesa, The Powerful Hand.  

MiM – Para este  CD la banda ha reclutado al bajista Dino Fiorenza, un músico muy importante. El otro miembro que se incorpora es el baterista Salvo Grasso. Nos gustaría que nos hablaras de ambos músicos pero un poco más sobre Dino, quien es más famoso por haber tocado con Billy Sheehan y Steve Vai. 

D) Dino es un viejo amigo mío, mi primer bajista en una banda de metal. La amistad ha continuado a través de los años y estoy feliz porque ahora estamos en la misma banda. Dino es un músico a tiempo completo. Usualmente hace clinics de bajo por todo el mundo, tocando con artistas increíbles de la talla de Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, Yngwie Malmsteen, Billy Sheean, John Macaluso y Edu Falaschi, pare mencionar algunos. También graba las pistas de bajo en muchos Cds. Además es profesor de bajo para algunos de los institutos de música de Italia. Es un tío estupendo. Salvo, quien es también el baterista en la banda italiana de power metal sinfónico Hypersonic, es otro músico talentoso, un magnifico arreglista y compositor, y también canta. Tanto Dino como Salvo eran los miembros apropiados que estábamos buscando para Metatrone y ahora la banda está en su mejor forma.

MiM – Jo Lombardo es un vocalista espectacular. ¿Cuán fácil es encontrar un vocalista como él? Pregunto de esta manera porque siempre estoy escuchando a maravillosos vocalistas italianos, y tal vez es un detalle genético.

D) La voz de Jo es despampanante. Es una de las mejores voces que he escuchado, como la de otros cantantes italianos bien conocidos. No es fácil encontrar esa clase de voz que es perfecta para el estilo de Metatrone. Parece que en Italia tenemos algo en el AND que crea excelentes vocalistas. ¿Genética? Tal vez, jaja.

 MiM – Hablemos del nuevo CD. Es maravilloso, Padre. Para mí fue muy importante escuchar “Alef Dalet Mem” como primer tema, una letra contra el abuso infantil.  Por favor, ¿Cuéntanos más sobre esta canción?

D) Gracias Tony. Si, “Alef Dalet Mem” proviene del la palabra que en antiguo hebreo era AD(A)M ("Hombre"),  es una canción que habla sobre el abuso infantil. Es una canción fuerte y cruda, seguro. Habla acerca de un hombre que lucha para mantener el amor y la vida aun cuando es incapaz de olvidar el trágico pasado por el que pasó.

MiM – Hay algo que no comprendo acerca de “Molokai”. ¿La letra está hablando acerca del fanatismo religioso en general? ¿Están ustedes hablando contra el yihadismo?

D) Molokai es tal vez una de las canciones más fuertes de todo el álbum, y fue escrita para luchar contra cualquier tipo de fanatismo religioso, pero especialmente aquel que se encuentra dentro del mundo cristiano y católico. Luchamos contra esa lepra espiritual como mismo hizo San Damian, muy lejos en la isla de Molokai, donde vivió y murió cuidando de la población local que sufría de lepra y que fue abandonada a su trágico destino por el gobierno colonial inglés.

MiM – Siendo una banda de “White metal” aun cuando esta etiqueta no les queda bien a ustedes, es lógico que escriban letras sobre aspectos religiosos pero… ¿Que hay con “Beware The Sailor” y otras letras que no son “cristianas” en esencia?

D) Algunas canciones son más explicitas y algunas otras son más cripticas, pero todas nuestras canciones están escritas con un espíritu y punto de vista cristiano y católico. “Beware the Sailor”, por ejemplo, es una canción que quiere delatar a la política y los políticos que engañan a la gente con sus falsas promesas. Como metalero y cristiano sentimos que tenemos que hablar sobre la vida real, que está hecha de diversión, lagrimas, rabia, esperanza, piedad y humanidad en un final.

MiM – Entendemos que la banda canta comúnmente en ingles, pero déjame decirte que las versiones en italiano de “Alef Dalet Mem” y “Lascia Che Sia” suenan más fuertes que las versiones en inglés. Y la épica “Regina Coeli” cantada en italiano suena realmente ponderosa. Cuando van de gira ¿cantan en italiano o en inglés?

D) Nuestro setlist en directo incluye canciones en italiano e inglés. No es un problema para nosotros. Conocemos el poder de ambos idiomas. Es una de nuestra características como banda y nos gusta asi. 

MiM – ¿Por qué escogieron “Latest News From Light” como primer single?  Más del 50 por ciento del CD pudieran ser singles potenciales.

D) ¡Sí! Estamos orgullosos e todas las canciones en Eucharismetal. "Latest news from light" fue el primer single y video clip, porque fue la primera canción de la nueva formación de la banda después que Tony y Virgilio se fueran de Metatrone. Esta canción está inspirada en la parábola del padre misericordioso y fue escogida y lanzada como single unos días antes de que el Papa Francisco anunciara al mundo católico el nacimiento del jubiloso año de la misericordia. Una coincidencia fantástica, ¿no crees? 

MiM – Cuando terminamos de escuchar el CD, nos damos cuenta que en el mismo encontramos melodic metal, power metal, metal prog, hard rock e incluso AOR. ¿Es la banda tan diversa a propósito? 

D) ¡Exactamente! Todos los estilos que mencionas conviven a la perfección en la música de Metatrone, y es así porque hay una pequeña parte de la contribución de cada músico en el.

MiM – ¿Fue “Mozart's Nightmare” escrito para este CD? Me recuerda a la  Trans-Siberian Orchestra. 

D) No, fue una de las primeras canciones que compuse. Pensamos que era el momento adecuado para grabarla y así lo hicimos. De verdad que me gusta mucho y espero que a ustedes también. Siempre es una agradable sorpresa encontrar una canción instrumental como esa.

MiM – Ahora que tienen un nuevo Cd. ¿Cuáles son los planes futuros?

D) Nuestra compañía de contratación y sello discográfico, Rockshots Music, está trabajando muy duro en el plan de promoción de Eucharismetal, y también en la re-edición de nuestros dos discos anteriores, The Powerful Hand y Paradigma, en Italia y Europa. Comenzamos a girar por Busto Arsizio (Milan) el 22 de abril y el festival  Rock for Eternity (Holanda) el 23. Habrá más fechas, seguro. As metal musicians and Christians we feel we have to talk about real life, which is made of joys, tears, rage, hope, mercy and humanity in the end.  

The Father Davide Bruno took a time to answer our questions.

MiM – We discover Metatrone with Eucharismetal.  ¿Why Eucharismetal?

D) Hi Tony! Well, "Eucharismetal" is our way to thank our Lord for the gift of music He gave us, because we love metal music since the beginning, and this title summarize perfectly what we are, metallers, metal musicians in Christ. He stands at the center of our identity and gives us the energy that make our music living and pulsing, as you can easily see in Cd artwork form talented graphic designer, Nello Dell'Omo (ArtforMusic).

MiM – We read that was the Father Davide Bruno, Archdiocese of Catania – Italy who creates the band. Why did you decide to create a metal band?

D) Well, I was one of the former members of the band when it was called "Metafora" back in 1996. Then, as I decided to enter the seminary of Catania to become a priest, in 2001, we all changed the name into Metatrone, just keep playing power progressive music with a brand new inspiration, of course. I started playing music with my keyboards when I was very young, but it was when I discovered metal music that I pointed to have a metal band with original compositions. So I started to write my first songs, found some friends to play with and so on, long the years the band grew up, defining its style and songwriting. 

MiM – We are sure than basically heavy metal music is not in contradiction with Christian faith but, have you received a bad opinion from part of your congregation in Catania, some Bishop or somebody over or under your hierarchy because you play in a metal band? What would happen if so?

D) Metatrone history has been signed by an extraordinary and very unconventional event, that can give you the best answer possible to this question. Few months after my entering the Seminary, in Catania, the priest who was in chief at that time was noticed I played music in a metal band and that I was already almost famous in town for some early recordings and live gigs. He asked me to let him know what kind of music I was playing about. I talked to him about metal music and about the fact I was starting to play metal music taking inspiration from the Gospel and Jesus Christ's word. He was so delighted by these words that he promoted me to keep playing and writing my music until he decided to produce our first Italian album, La Mano Potente, and English version, The Powerful Hand.

MiM – From this CD the band has recruited the bass player Dino Fiorenza, a very important musician. The other new member is the drummer Salvo Grasso. We would like that you will speak to me about both musicians but more about Dino who is more famous for playing with Billy Sheehan and Steve Vai. 

D) Dino is an old friend of mine, my first bass player in a metal band. This friendship goes through the years and I'm so happy we are now back in the same band. Dino works as a musician full time. He uses to have a lot of bass clinics all over the world, played with incredible artists such as Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, Malmsteen, Billy Sheehan, John Macaluso and Edu Falaschi, just to mention. He also recorded bass tracks into tons of Cds. Furthermore he teaches bass for some of the magi music institute in Italy. He's a great guy. Salvo, which is already the drummer of Italian symphonic power metal band Hypersonic, is another very talented musician, a great arranger and writer, and singer as well. Both Dino and Salvo are the two right members that we were looking for. Metatrone is now at its best form.
Jo Lombardo is a spectacular singer. How easy is finding a singer like him? I ask you because I’m always listening amazing Italian singers, and maybe is a genetic situation? D) Jo's voice is stunning. He's one of the best voices we've ever heard, together with some other well known Italian singers. It's not so easy to find such a kind of voice, which is perfect for Metatrone style. It seems in Italy we have something in our DNA that creates great singers. Genetics?  Maybe. Eh eh!

MiM – Let’s talk about the new CD. It’s amazing, father. To me was very important listening “Alef Dalet Mem” as a first track, a lyric against child abuse. Please, tell us more about this song?

D) Thanks Tony. Yes Alef Dalet Mem, that stands for the ancient Hebrew word AD(A)M ("man"), is a song who speaks about child abuses. It's a strong and raw song, for sure. It' speaks about a man who fights to keep living and loving life even though he cannot forget the tragic past he went through.

MiM – Is there something I didn´t really understand about “Molokai”. Are you speaking about religious fanatism in general? Are you speaking against jihadism?

D) Molokai is maybe one of the heaviest songs of the whole album, and it was written to fight against any religious fanatics, but especially those who lie inside Christian and Catholic world. We fight this spiritual leprosy as Saint Damien did, far away in Molokai island, where he lived and died taking care of local people who suffered from leprosy and who were abandoned to their tragic destiny by English colonial government.

MiM – Being a “White metal band” even when this sticker doesn´t totally fit you, is logic that you write lyrics about religious aspects but. What about “Beware the Sailor” and other lyrics that are not so “Christian” in its sense?

D) Some song are more explicit some others they keep themselves just more cryptic, but all our songs are written with a Christian and catholic spirit and point of view. “Beware the Sailor”, for example, is a song that wants to betray politics and politicians who deceive people with their false promises. As metal musicians and Christians we feel we have to talk about real life, which is made of joys, tears, rage, hope, mercy and humanity in the end.   

MiM – We understand that the band usually sings in English but let me tell you that the Italian versions of “Alef Dalet Mem”, “Lascia Che Sia” sound really stronger than the English versions. And the epic “Regina Coeli” sung in Italian is really powerful. When you are on tour, do you sing in English or Italian?

D) Our set list live contains both Italian and English songs. It's not a problem for us. We know the power of both languages. It's one of our typical feature and we like it.

MiM – Why did you choose “Latest News From Light” as a first single?  More than 50 per cent of the CD could be potential singles. 

D) Yeah! We are proud of all the songs in Eucharismetal. "Latest news from light" was the first single and video clip, because it was the very first song of band's new way, after Tony and Virgilio's departing from Metatrone. This song is inspired on the parabola of the merciful father and it has been released as the first single track from the new album, right few weeks before Pope Francis announced to the Catholic world the beginning of the Jubilee Year of Mercy. A fantastic coincidence, don't you think? 

MiM – Once we finish listening to the CD, we can find in there melodic metal, power metal, metal prog, hard rock and even AOR. Are you so diverse on purpose? 

D) Exactly! All these styles you mentioned are perfectly filled together in Metatrone music, right because there's a small part of each musician's contribution on it.

MiM – Was “Mozart's Nightmare” written for this CD? It reminds me the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. 

D) Not really. This is one of first songs that I wrote. We thought it would be the right time to record it and we did it. Love this instrumental song, really! We hope you liked it too. It's always a good surprise to find an instrumental song like this one.

MiM – Now that you have a new Cd. What are the future plans? Italian tours? European Tours? Spanish tour?

D) Our management company and label, Rockshots Music, is working hard to plan some live date to promote Eucharismetal, as well as the reissues of our past two albums, The Powerful Hand and Paradigma, in Italy and Europe. We start from Busto Arsizio (Milan) on April 22nd and Rock for Eternity (Netherlands) on April 23rd. More live dates to follow, of course.
