La banda de metal moderno A Life Divided, con sede en Munich, Alemania, lanzará su nuevo álbum 'Down The Spiral Of A Soul' el 7 de julio a través de AFM Records. Made in Metal habla con el vocalista Jurgen Plangger para conocer detalles de este disco y la historia de la banda.
MiM: Veinte años de carrera sostenida, donde seguramente han ganado experiencia en este duro camino de la música. ¿Cómo fueron esos inicios? ¿Cómo surge la idea de formar la banda? ¿Alguna anécdota que recuerdes de aquellos primeros años?
ALD: Bueno, nos reunimos por primera vez en 2003. Nuestro productor Erik me preguntó si quería unirme a la banda. Lo conozco desde que teníamos un año. Éramos vecinos y amigos en nuestra infancia. Más de 40 años después, seguimos haciendo música juntos. ¡Loco! Intentamos encontrar un sello en ese entonces y tocamos en vivo donde pudimos. En 2011 firmamos nuestro primer contrato con AFM Records y giramos por Europa con Apocalyptica. ¡Tengo grandes recuerdos de esos primeros días!
MiM: "Down The Spiral Of A Soul" (AFM Records, 2023) es un excelente álbum. Sonido compacto, con una energía increíble. ¿Qué me puedes decir de este disco? ¿Cuál es el mensaje?
ALD: El álbum es, entre otras cosas, esta vez mucho sobre la depresión y la salud mental y todo lo que conlleva. Miedo, soledad, sentirse incomprendido, no entenderse más a uno mismo. Esa es una gran parte del álbum porque ha ocupado mucho espacio en mi entorno en los últimos años. Grabado y producido por nosotros mismos. Para mezclar y masterizar, fuimos a Sawdust Studios a Christoph Wieczorek (Annisokay), quien hizo un gran trabajo. Nunca he estado tan contento con el sonido como con "Down The Spiral Of a Soul".
MiM: En "Last Man Standing" se escucha una segunda voz en ocasiones melódicas y otras guturales que encajan y enriquecen el tema. ¿Algún vocalista invitado o son todas las voces de Jürgen Plangger?
ALD: Esto es todo mío. O mis diferentes personalidades, por así decirlo. Me gusta esta mezcla de voces y esta canción las necesitaba todas.
MiM: "True Religion" es mi canción favorita. Es un tema con un mensaje directo y claro. ¿Qué me puedes decir sobre este tema y el mensaje que quieres transmitir?
ALD: En ese momento estaba bastante molesto por todos los autoproclamados profetas y sabelotodos que creen que conocen la única verdad. El exceso de confianza es una enfermedad desagradable. Y luego llevar a todo el misionero delante de él me enoja mucho. Afortunadamente, tengo la música en la que puedo dejar salir esta ira.
MiM: Tienes un rango vocal que a veces me recuerda a Chester Bennington (Linkin' Park). ¿Cómo lo ves?
ALD: Lo tomo como un gran cumplido. Creo que era un muy buen cantante con un increíble sentido de la melodía. Hybrid Theory fue una gran inspiración para nosotros en ese momento. Lamentablemente se fue demasiado pronto.
MiM: En "Down The Spiral Of A Soul" al escuchar con atención siento una marcada influencia de bandas como Defstone, Depeche Mode, Can, New Order y Linkin' Park. ¿Es tan? ¿Cuáles son vuestras influencias más directas a la hora de componer nuevo material?
ALD: No te equivocas ahí. Deftones, Depeche Mode y Linkin Park son definitivamente mis influencias personales. Pero también pertenecen bandas como Devin Townsend, o Anathema. Pero muchas veces no son otras bandas las que nos influyen a la hora de componer, sino una frase, un sentimiento o una imagen. Puede ser cualquier cosa que desencadene una emoción profunda.
MiM: Sois una banda con varios años de formación. Mirando hacia atrás, ¿cómo calificarías el trabajo de la banda todos estos años?
ALD: Hubo altibajos, como en la vida real. Tuve las mejores experiencias con la banda. Y también algunas horas difíciles. Considerándolo todo, me alegro de que la banda aún exista después de todos estos años y que todavía encontremos diversión y satisfacción en nuestra música. Estoy muy orgulloso de "Down The Spiral Of A Soul" y ¡nos deseo un largo camino!
MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum? ¿Conciertos o giras programadas?
ALD: Tocaremos en algunos festivales este verano y nos iremos de gira por Alemania en otoño. ¡Realmente esperamos hacer una gira en el extranjero también!

Modern Metal band A Life Divided, based in Munich, Germany will release their new album 'Down The Spiral Of A Soul' on July 7th under the prestigious AFM Records label. Made in Metal talks with Jurgen to find out everything about this album and the history of the band.
MiM: Twenty years of sustained career, where surely they have gained experience in this hard path of music. How were those beginnings? How did the idea of forming the band come about? Any anecdote you remember from those early years?
ALD: Well, we came together for the first time in 2003. Our producer Erik asked me if I wanted to join the band. I've known him since we were one year old. We were neighbors and friends in our childhood. Over 40 years later, we're still making music together. Crazy! We tried to find a label back then and played live wherever we could. In 2011 we signed our first contract with AFM Records and toured Europe with Apocalyptica. I have great memories of those early days!
MiM: "Down The Spiral Of A Soul" (AFM Records, 2023) is an excellent album. Compact sound, with incredible energy. What can you tell me about this record? Which is the message?
ALD: The album is, among other things, this time much about depression and mental health and everything that goes with it. Fear, loneliness, feeling misunderstood, not understanding yourself anymore. That's a big part of the album because that's taken up a lot of space in my environment over the last few years. Recorded and produced by ourselves. For mixing and mastering we went to Sawdust Studios to Christoph Wieczorek (Annisokay), who did a really great job. I've never been so happy with the sound as with "Down The Spiral Of a Soul".
MiM: In "Last Man Standing" a second voice is heard on melodic occasions and other guttural ones that fit and enrich the theme. Any guest vocalist or are all the voices by Jürgen Plangger?
ALD: This is all me. Or my different personalities, if you will. I like this mix of voices and this song needed all f them.
MiM: "True Religion" is my favorite track. It is a topic with a direct and clear message. What can you tell me about this topic and the message you want to convey?
ALD: At that time I was quite annoyed by all the self-proclaimed prophets and smart alecks who believe that they know the only truth. Overconfidence is a nasty disease. And then to carry the whole missionary before him makes me really angry. Fortunately, I have the music in which I can let out this anger.
MiM: You have a vocal range that sometimes reminds me of Chester Bennington (Linkin' Park). How do you see it?
ALD: I take that as a great compliment. I think he was a very good singer with an incredible sense of melody. Hybrid Theory was a great inspiration for us at that time. Unfortunately, he left way too early.
MiM: In "Down The Spiral Of A Soul" when listening carefully I feel a marked influence from bands like Defstone, Depeche Mode, Can, New Order and Linkin' Park. Is it so? What are your most direct influences when composing new material?
ALD: You are not wrong there. Deftones, Depeche Mode and Linkin Park are definitely my personal influences. But also bands like Devin Townsend, or Anathema belong to it. But often it's not other bands that influence us in songwriting, but a sentence, a feeling or an image. It can be anything that triggers a deep emotion.
MiM: You are a band with several years of formation. Looking back, how would you rate the work of the band all these years?
ALD: There were ups and downs, just like in real life. I had the best experiences with the band. And also some difficult hours. All in all, I'm glad that the band still exists after all these years and that we still find fun and fulfillment in our music. I'm really proud of "Down The Spiral Of A Soul" and wish us still a long way!
MiM: What plans do you have to promote this Album? Concerts or scheduled tours?
ALD: We're playing a few festivals this summer and going on tour in Germany in the fall. We really hope to tour abroad as well!
