"Intentamos hacer de cada concierto de Oceanhoarse un verdadero espectáculo de metal"
La banda finlandesa de heavy metal Oceanhoarse lanzó su álbum 'Dead Reckoning' en el sello discográfico Noble Demon Records el año pasado. Made in Metal habla con el guitarrista Jyri Helko, para conocer algunos detalles de este disco y sus próximos movimientos.
MiM: “Dead Reckoning” (Noble Demon, 2021) es un disco con un sonido explosivo, riffs de guitarra intensos y una base apabullante de bajo y batería. ¿Qué me puedes decir de este álbum?
OH: “Dead Reckoning” tiene varios temas líricos diferentes, principalmente sobre eventos de la vida real que suceden a nuestro alrededor. “The Intruder”, por ejemplo, trata sobre el cáncer y tiene una letra bastante sencilla, pero al mismo tiempo queríamos darle al oyente algunos temas más abstractos y dejar que la música hablara, como la pieza instrumental “Submersed” donde el título sugiere que estás a punto de hundirte o sumergirte bajo la superficie del agua, con la única melodía de guitarra sonando de fondo.
MiM: Excelente diseño de portada de disco. ¿Quién lo diseñó y cuál es el concepto detrás de la portada?
OH: El hermano de nuestro guitarrista Ben Varon, Jonatan, talló la portada en varias capas de madera y su padre, Uzi Varon, tomó la foto que se ve en la portada, ¡así que es una especie de esfuerzo familiar! La escultura de madera es en realidad una caja de medio metro de altura que tiene 4-5 capas diferentes de madera ensambladas para que parezca una cueva oscura bajo el agua donde "The Oceanhoarse", una especie de criatura marina, está al acecho y observándote. Además, el libreto dentro de las versiones en CD y vinilo tiene todas las carátulas de los sencillos que hemos lanzado del álbum y algunas fotos de la gira europea que hicimos con Marko Hietala, el ex bajista y cantante de Nightwish, justo antes de la pandemia, a principios de 2020.
MiM: Este álbum ha sido grabado durante la pandemia y el confinamiento, ¿qué tan diferente ha sido el proceso de composición y grabación en comparación con trabajos anteriores?
OH: Fue diferente seguro, porque nadie sabía cuánto duraría la pandemia y cómo afectaría a toda la escena musical y a la gente. El álbum consta de algunas canciones nuevas que escribimos durante la pandemia y también de algunos favoritos en vivo más antiguos, por ejemplo "The Intruder" y "From Hell to Oblivion" y la canción de apertura instrumental "Headfirst", que hemos estado tocando en nuestros programas antes del lanzamiento del álbum.
El proceso de grabación comenzó con Kari Huikuri en East Sound Studio en Helsinki, pero como las restricciones de confinamiento continuaron, decidimos construir nuestro propio estudio en nuestro lugar de ensayo y continuar las grabaciones allí nosotros mismos. MiM: Recientemente lanzaste el sencillo "Head will Roll". ¿Cómo ha sido la reacción de los fans?
OH: De acuerdo con la reacción de la gente, ¡“Heads Will Roll” parecía ser un número en vivo realmente bueno! La canción trata sobre todos estos líderes locos en este mundo, tanto del pasado como del presente, y cómo eventualmente, cuando las cosas se intensifican, la historia inevitablemente se repite y luego ¡sus cabezas rodarán!
MiM: A nivel musical, al escribir música. ¿Cuáles son sus referencias?

Finnish heavy metal band Oceanhoarse released their album 'Dead Reckoning' on the Noble Demon record label last year. Made in Metal talks with the guitar player Jyri Helko, to find out everything about this album and their next moves.
MiM: “Dead Reckoning” (Noble Demon, 2021) is an album with an explosive sound, intense guitar riffs, and an overwhelming base of bass and drums. What can you tell me about this album?
OH: “Dead Reckoning” has several different lyrical themes, mostly about real-life events happening around us. “The Intruder”, for example, is about cancer and it's pretty straightforward lyric-wise. Still, at the same time, we wanted to give the listener some more abstract themes and let the music do the talking, like the instrumental piece “Submersed” where the title suggests that you're about to sink or dive under the surface of the water – with the sole guitar melody playing in the background.
MiM: Excellent album cover design. Who designed it and what is the concept behind the cover?
OH: Our guitar player Ben Varon's brother Jonatan carved the cover out of several layers of wood and their father Uzi Varon took the photo seen on the cover, so it's kind of a family effort! The wooden sculpture is actually a half-a-meter tall box that has 4-5 different layers of wood assembled to make it look like a dark, underwater cave where “The Oceanhoarse”, some sea creature, is lurking and watching you. Also, the booklet inside the CD and vinyl versions have all the cover art of the singles we've released from the album and some pictures from the European tour we did with Marko Hietala, the former Nightwish bass player and singer, just before the pandemic in early 2020.
MiM: This album has been recorded during the pandemic and lockdowns, how different has the composition and recording process been compared to previous works?
OH: It was different for sure because nobody knew how long the pandemic will last and how it will affect to the whole music scene and to the people. The album consists of both some brand new songs we made wrote during the pandemic and also some older live favorites, e.g. “The Intruder” and “From Hell to Oblivion” and the instrumental opening song “Headfirst”, that we've been playing on our shows already prior the album release.
The recording process started with Kari Huikuri at the East Sound Studio in Helsinki, but as the lockdown restrictions kept continuing, we decided to build our own studio at our rehearsal place and continue the recordings there ourselves. We usually tend to record the whole band playing together live in the studio, but eventually, it turned out to be impossible to do the whole album that way because of the constant rescheduling and quarantines, so we had to figure out alternative ways to get the same atmosphere also to the latter half of the songs. This time, we also experimented with additional vocal harmonies and some more layering on the guitar tracks than on the 2019 EP “Voluntary Bends”, which was pretty straightforward and filled with raw power.
MiM: You recently released the single "Head will roll". How has the reaction of the fans been?
OH: According to the reaction of the people, “Heads Will Roll” seemed to be a really good live number! The song is about all these crazy leaders in this world, both past and present, and how eventually when things escalate, history inevitably repeats itself and then their heads will roll!
MiM: On a musical level, when writing music. What are your references?
OH: Rather than following the latest trends, we try to keep in mind all the bands and the songs that inspired us in the very beginning. That's why we decorated our whole rehearsal place with old-school posters and flags to ensure that everywhere you look there's either Dimebag Darrel, Chris Cornell or some other true legends staring at you! We also like to try to all the ideas together with the whole band as soon as possible and jam a little to keep the workflow as organic as possible, instead of just sending some demos back and forth online. MiM: What can a record label like Noble Demon Records offer an Oceanhoarse band to establish themselves in the scene?
OH: I hope the next album is going to get even more recognition abroad than the first one and we'll get to play as many shows as possible, also on festivals. Although “Noble Demon” is a rather new player in the field, the people working at the label have gained quite a lot of experience in the industry beforehand; therefore, I believe we are in good hands.
MiM: How is an Oceanhoarse concert? As a band when you are alive, what do you offer to the fans and the general audience?
OH: We try to make each Oceanhoarse gig a true metal show! No matter how big or small the stage is we'll promise to provide some extra to the regular metal concert: a classic cover, an occasional bass solo, some smoke machines, and all the classic theatrics to make sure everybody's having a good time – all the time!
MiM: How was the tour with SOEN going? Any story you want to tell us?
OH: The tour was absolutely awesome! First of all, there were so many new places to visit. Next: Soen and their crew were really top-notch people and most importantly: the audience was really supportive every night when we played our show. Hopefully, we'll get a chance to do it all again sometime soon!
MiM: Heavy Metal seems to be going through a very good stage in terms of the quality and quantity of bands and releases. What do you think this happens?
OH: I guess it goes in waves – for example here in Finland the mainstream music media wasn't that interested in new metal acts for some years, but now they've got the memo that there are actually many up-and-coming new metal bands, like Dirt or Luna Kills, who are really kicking in the doors! My favorite international releases are probably the new Lamb of God and Mastodon albums – those two have been the definitive highlights for me in a long time. I'm also looking forward to hearing the new Gojira songs!
MiM: What plans do you have for concerts or scheduled tours this year?
OH: We are having our own indoor festival in Helsinki: December 30th, Hoarsefest at On the Rocks. Tickets are on sale now, so if you happen to be in Helsinki celebrating New Year's, make sure not to miss this special event! Hoarsefest tickets.
